It is an non-governmental and non-profit-making international organisation, IOC ‒ recognised, with the basic aim of furthering aeronautical and astronautical activities worldwide, ratifying international records and coordinating the organisation of international competitions. After over a century of steady growth, FAI is now an organisation of more than 100 member countries, forming a strong network linking all those who participate in air sports worldwide.

President’s Foreword

Greetings from Lausanne, Switzerland, the Olympic Capital, and home of FAI, the World Air Sports Federation. The year 2017 was a busy and exciting one for the FAI, with a total of 63 FAI World and Continental Championships and an incredible 613 FAI-sanctioned events taking place around the world. Numerous FAI athletes also pushed the boundaries of their chosen sports to set new records, while a number of outstanding pilots and competitors were honoured with FAI awards.

It was also an eventful year for one of the FAI’s youngest disciplines: drone racing. With its history of promoting innovation, and its decades of competitive air sport and regulatory experience, the FAI is perfectly placed to lead the way in the development of drone sports. The success of the 1st FAI International Drones Conference and Expo in September 2017, which attracted attendees from five continents, cemented our position as the foremost global authority on all things drone.

We have also been busy supervising drone sports competitions such as the FAI Drone Racing World Cup, which has been running since 2016, and the forthcoming first edition of the FAI World Drone Racing Championships. The Championships will be held in Shenzhen in China from 1 to 4 November 2018, and will be a fantastic opportunity for the stars of this booming new sport to demonstrate their talents to the world. It is great to see up-and-coming air sports such as drone racing and indoor skydiving, another new sport for which the 2nd FAI World Championships was held in 2017, attracting attention from a new generation of fans, including many young women – a group the FAI is particularly keen to help both enjoy and excel in air sports.

Other highlights of 2017 included The World Games, which took place in July in Wroclaw, Poland. This 10-day sporting extravaganza was a great opportunity to showcase the skills of our athletes in three disciplines – canopy piloting, paramotoring and glider acrobatics – included for the first time last year.

The decision by the International World Games Association to include these disciplines in The World Games was a result of our commitment to further the appeal of air sports by introducing them to more multi-sport events, a commitment that also shone through during our successful campaign to add paragliding to the programme for the 2018 Asian Games.

FAI’s own multi-sports event, the FAI World Air Games, is the jewel in the Federation’s crown. Building upon the success of the 2015 edition in Dubai, the bidding process for the next Games attracted several high quality candidates. Following a strict selection process, our Turkish Member Türk Hava Kurumu (THK) was awarded the organisation of the FAI World Air Games 2020 in early 2018.

In 2017, FAI was also proud to run more than 60 single-sport competitions around the world. Ranging from longstanding, strategic competitions such as the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett to the adrenaline-filled Red Bull Air Race World Championships, these events allowed our athletes to demonstrate their prowess and display the beauty of air sports in a wide variety of locations.

And we were there to applaud the many pilots and skydivers who reached new highs during the course of the year. Record breakers in 2017 included UAE skydiver Cornelia Mihai and Russians Ivan Menyaylo and Fedor Konyukhov, while the UK’s Ben Philpott was among those decorated with FAI awards – in his case for assisting a fellow pilot in critical circumstances, despite having suffered a traumatic experience.

Air sports competitions and records have always been our focus. But in this modern age, another of the FAI’s roles is to ensure our sports are promoted in the best possible way; using new technology and new mediums such as social media to share the splendour and excitement of competitive aviation with a wider audience and develop an even stronger air sports community as a result.


This is one of the main reasons behind our recent partnership with the Olympic Channel, which began working with the Federation in 2017 – broadcasting live footage of the spectacular action from the FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships in Canada and the FAI Swoop Freestyle World Championships in Denmark.

Effective partnerships are essential to the successful running of the Federation and its numerous events. Throughout 2017, the FAI maintained rewarding commercial relationships with our Official Logistics Partner DHL and our Global Technical Partner Noosphere, which developed a hi-tech event management system that we used with great success for the first time at The World Games. We also continued to develop our partnership with cloud hosting company Leaseweb, which is the host for the new FAI website.

On an internal level, meanwhile, the FAI is evolving to ensure the Federation is primed to face the challenges and take full advantage of the opportunities arising as air sports change and grow. That is why I was delighted to play an instrumental role in the first FAI Air Sports in Asia Summit in Hong Kong. It was an important event aimed at ensuring the effective and sustainable development of air sports in that part of the world, where Members such as the Aero Sports Federation of China (ASFC) are doing a wonderful job of promoting air sports and attracting lots of young participants via events including the FAI ‒ AFSC World Fly-in Expo in Wuhan. Again, I was lucky enough to attend this epic event – hopefully the first of many organised by our dynamic Chinese Member.

The FAI General Conference, which took place in Lausanne, was another opportunity to strengthen the bonds within our community. On this occasion the Delegates admitted the following three Members: the Libyan Airsports Federation and the Fédération Tunisienne des Sports Aéronautiques et Activités Associées (Active Members); the Asociación Uruguaya de Parapente (Associate Member). To them, welcome to FAI.

The admission of these three new Members brings the global FAI family to a total of 115, giving us a great basis for increasing activity levels across all air sports disciplines, all around the world.

It should also be noted that the Conference started with our prestigious FAI Awards Ceremony, which celebrates outstanding pilots and pioneers from across the global air sports arena. I was honoured to see it graced with the presence of several high profile guests, including Dr Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

To conclude, I would like to express my thanks to all of you: FAI Event Organisers, Commissions, Members, Officials, volunteers, partners and Head Office staff. Our Federation is going from strength to strength and that is down to you.

The FAI is keen to strengthen its links with the extended global sports community through participation in both international and regional multi-sports events. Having air sports competitions at these large-scale sporting events allows them to benefit from vast media attention, and is an excellent opportunity to show off our athletes’ skills.

So the Federation was delighted that three of its sports – glider aerobatics, parachuting canopy piloting (swooping) and paramotoring – were selected by the International World Games Association to be on the programme of The World Games 2017. Held under the patronage of the IOC, The World Games take place every four years, and are for sports or disciplines not included in the Olympic Games.

Some 35,000 people attended the opening ceremony of this 10th edition, held in Wroclaw, Poland between 20 and 30 July 2017. And many more came to cheer on the over 3,000 competitors from 100 nations who descended on Wroclaw to perform in events across 60 different sports and disciplines.

Among them were 66 pilots and skydivers with one aim: to take a prestigious World Games medal home. Their competitions took place from 20 to 23 July 2017 at Szymanow Airfield.

Spectators lucky enough to get a ticket for the sold-out events were wowed by the manoeuvres pulled off by the glider aerobatics pilots, who had a 1,000m aerial “box” to complete their routines, amazed by the seemingly death-defying stunts performed by the skydivers as they passed across the “swooping pond”, and impressed by the precision and control displayed by the paramotor pilots over the course of their five tasks.

Other highlights of The World Games 2017 for the FAI included that it was the venue for the Federation’s mid-year FAI Air Sport Commissions Presidents and FAI Active Members Presidents meetings, and a chance to try the new event management system eNavigator, developed by FAI Global Technical Partner Noosphere. Used to create the event website, and to process and display results in the paramotoring and glider aerobatics competitions, the cutting-edge system also sent out official scores for all the air sports events. It was declared a success, especially as it allowed fans to follow the realtime evolution of the athletes’ scores and rankings live online.

Overall, the air sports competitions proved hugely popular with spectators both at the venue and watching from afar. They also benefited from extensive media attention from a wide range of outlets: proof that including air sports in multi-sport events helps to raise their profile and widen their appeal.

HIGHLIGHT EVENTS 1st FAI International Drones Conference and Expo

The FAI International Drones Conference and Expo offers a unique platform for organisations, businesses and individuals from around the world to discuss how drones are used today, and create a framework for how they will be used in the future.

Combining a conference and expo with a world-class drone race, it is a unique event that we definitely plan to run again given how well the first edition went.

Part of EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) Drone Days 2017, the 1st FAI International Drones Conference and Expo took place in September. It was a huge success, welcoming expert speakers and visitors from around the world and attracting visitors from all around the world. Proof, if any were needed, of just how global a phenomenon drones have become!

From safety issues, to cutting-edge technology and drone sports developments, for an overview over the most recent developments in the world of drones, attendance was a must.

The event also provided a forum for debate and discussion around three themes: Innovation, Safety and Sports. These three themes were chosen because we felt they encompassed the entire drone community, a truth that was illustrated by the wide variety of speakers who came to share their knowledge and expertise.

Groups represented by speakers at the conference included: FAI Global Technical Partner Noosphere; the European Aviation Safety Agency; the Institute for Drone Technology; Lufthansa; the Swiss eSports Association; the Federal Office of Civil Aviation; Freedom Drone Sports; NCCR Robotics; Aurora Flight Science; Post CH; and WeRobotics. Their presentations touched on a wide range of topics, including urban transportation, public safety, data collection, drone racing, and eSports. There were also far-reaching discussions about how drones will be used in the future and are already changing our view on the world.

Plus a fast-paced drone racing competition organised by the Swiss Rotor Sports Association (SRSA), and a fascinating Expo combining temporary exhibits with those on show at the EPFL. All in all, it was an engaging and eye-opening event that reinforced the FAI’s role as the world governing body for drone sports, while allowing it to remain at the forefront of how drones will impact on air sports in general.

Drones are going to start to have a big impact on both competitive air sports and recreational flying over the next few years. Organising this annual conference therefore helps us to protect the rights of all our members to continue using the airspace for their chosen activities, while supporting the fast-moving drone community at the same time. This year’s FAI International Drones Conference and Expo will once again be held at the EPFL Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, Switzerland and will run from August 31 to September 2. The themes of the 2018 event will be the same as in 2017, but with a greater emphasis on Drones and Sports ahead of the first FAI World Drone Racing Championships.

Events such as the FAI World Air Games, The World Games and the Asian Games are fantastic opportunities to showcase FAI athletes’ skills and introduce air sports to a huge new audience. Furthermore, they play a significant role in creating synergies across our sports and members. Together with non-sporting meetings such as the FAI General Conference and the FAI Air Sports in Asia Summit, they bring our community closer together and help it to connect on a number of levels such as IT and competition management, renewing the dynamic within the Federation.

FAI World Air Games

Flagship event of the Federation, the FAI World Air Games (WAG) are a combination of elite competition and spectacular air shows. The extremely successful last edition of the Games was held in Dubai in December 2015. The next Games will take place in 2020 in Turkey, and will be organised by Turkish FAI Member Türk Hava Kurumu (THK). It was awarded the honour of hosting WAG 2020 in February 2018 and plans to hold events in some of the most iconic locations in Turkey, with the event split between Ankara, Antalya, Eskisehir, Efes / Selcuk, Ölüdeniz / Fethiye and Pammukale / Honaz.

FAI Air Games Tour

For many FAI athletes, the FAI World Air Games represent the pinnacle of their sporting ambitions. So to bridge the five-year gap between Games, the FAI is preparing to launch an international multi-discipline Air Games Tour.

The World Games

Canopy Piloting, Glider Aerobatics and Paramotoring were included in The World Games in 2017. Held in Wroclaw, Poland, the 10th edition of this multi-sport event drew huge crowds and high-profile media attention, helping to generate enthusiasm for air sports around the world. FAI Secretary General Susanne Schödel said: “The World Games take place under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee and are about showcasing the best of our sports to the IOC and to the world. So we are very happy that the FAI had three air sports represented for the first time in 2017.”

Asian Games

The Asian Games, organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), follows the sports programme of the Olympic Games. And for the first time ever, the 2018 edition will include a discipline from the FAI universe. Working with our partners in the Asian region, FAI signed an agreement with the OCA to include paragliding in the 2018 Games, which will take place in Jakarta – Palembang from August 18 to September 2.

From balloonists to helicopter pilots and from skydivers to drone racers, the aim is to consolidate the air sports community by making multi-sports events an important part of the FAI sporting calendar.

The world of competitive air sports is constantly evolving. But the pace of change has shot up in recent years as a number of brash, exciting new sports such as drone racing and indoor skydiving attract a whole new generation of air sports fans. Embracing these new disciplines is a vital part of the FAI’s role as the global air sports authority.

Drone sports

The year 2017 was a big one for drone sports in general, and drone racing in particular. The FAI was at the heart of much of the action, both running the FAI Drone Racing World Cup 2017, and planning for the 1st FAI World Drone Racing Championships, which will take place in Shenzhen in China in November 2018.

Drone racing involves competitors racing around a specially constructed circuit that often includes obstacles at break-neck speeds. The second edition of the FAI Drone Racing World Cup involved 435 competitors from 37 countries including Hungary, Japan, Italy and Norway: a big jump from 2016, when the total number of competitors placed was 229. The number of younger pilots taking part also soared from 18 in 2016 to 75 in 2017. Won by Swiss pilot Dario Neuenschwander, the 16-event competition was a huge success that demonstrated the growing popularity of drone racing around the world, including within the burgeoning e-sports arena.

Combining the excitement of real world drone racing with the latest gaming technology, e-sports events are watched by millions of gaming fans all over the world. They are expected to continue to grow and develop over the next few years, which is why FAI is taking a keen interest in them.

Other drone sports highlights of 2017 included the 1st international FAI Drones Conference and Expo at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. Providing an open forum for debate and learning from all parts of the drone universe, it welcomed hundreds of attendees from five different continents.

Indoor skydiving

Indoor skydiving is another fast-growing air sport discipline. With roots in skydiving, it involves flying inside a glass-walled, vertical wind tunnel, rather than jumping out of a plane. Competitors balance on a jet of fast-moving air, and compete either solo, with a partner, or as a team of four.

Highlights of 2017 included when more than 200 of the world’s best indoor skydivers converged on Montreal, Canada, in October for the 2nd FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships. The three-day competition was live-streamed online via the Olympic Channel, while live scoring brought the sporting action to life.

From spectacular skydiving to amazing aerobatics, thousands of pilots and teams came together to compete in Championships and FAI-sanctioned competitions in 2017. The FAI worked hard to promote them by collaborating with local organisers, and by sharing the action from the events online and on social media via a mix of videos, photographs and articles.

Perhaps the biggest news of the summer was that three air sports (Glider Aerobatics, Canopy Piloting and Paramotoring) were represented for the first time at The World Games, a multi-sport event held in July in Wroclaw, Poland. Ferenc Toth (HUN) won Gold for Glider Aerobatics; Nick Batsch (USA) won Gold for Canopy Piloting; and Wojciech Bogdal (POL) won Gold in Paramotoring.

Many of the world’s most talented skydivers also descended on Saarlouis, Germany for August’s FAI European Parachuting Championships and World Cups 2017. There, the French team dominated the leaderboard in several events and German athlete Thomas Moritz-Friess triumphed in the Speed Skydiving competition.

August also saw the 1st FAI Swoop Freestyle World Championships take place in Copenhagen, Denmark. Here, it was the US team that swept the board, with David Ludvik beating parachuting legends Nick Batsch and Curt Bartholomew into second and third place.

Later in the year, French pilots Vincent Leÿs and Christophe Houver won the historic long distance gas-balloon race: the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett.

And the French team also dominated the action at the 2nd FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships in Laval in Canada, taking gold in four disciplines.

In drone racing, meanwhile, Switzerland’s Dario Neuenschwander won the FAI Drone Racing World Cup 2017, fighting off competition from 433 drone pilots including silver medallist Andreas Hahn of Germany and the French junior competitor Thomas Grout, who ended the competition in third position.

Other highlights of the competition season included the 2017 Red Bull Air Race World Championship, which began in February in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and ended in October in Indianapolis in the US. Japan’s Yoshihide Muroya battled poor conditions and high winds to win the race in Indianapolis, and the overall title of Red Bull Air Race World Champion 2017. In the Challenger Class, Germany’s Florian Bergér won overall, while French pilot Melanie Astles became the first woman ever to win a race in the event.

Her victory in the Challenger Class at the Red Bull Air Race in Indianapolis was just one of many great moments for female pilots and athletes – our Women with Wings – during the course of 2017. Notable achievements of the competition calendar included Thailand’s Nunnapat Phuchong’s consistent performance in the 9th FAI Paragliding Accuracy Championship in Vlora, Albania, where she won the Women’s event ahead of Markéta Tomášková of the Czech Republic and Rika Wijayanti of Indonesia.

Female competitors also made their presence felt at the FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships in Canada, where 13-year-old Kaleigh Wittenburg of the USA was one of the youngest participants.

Overall, the Federation was involved with 37 World Championships, 6 other Category 1 events and 20 Continental Championships, while the number of FAI-sanctioned events hit an incredible 613.

These events could not take place without the dedication and energy of the thousands of volunteers who help to run them. Nor could they happen without the support of the FAI athletes who travel far and wide to share the passion they have for their chosen discipline with like-minded individuals from different regions and countries. In total, 4009 athletes from 71 member countries took part in World and Continental championships in 2017.

It is their participation that ensures the ability of FAI competitions to bring the air sports community closer together. That is why we are happy to see the popularity of FAI events increasing year on year.

Running and sanctioning events that bring joy and excitement to athletes and spectators alike is at the core of the Federation’s work to develop and support the air sports community. With hundreds of exciting events already on the calendar for 2018, the Federation is looking forward to continuing to play this role over the coming months.

Russian pilots Ivan Menyaylo and Fedor Konyukhov prepare to take off on their record-breaking 55h 9min 57sec flight from Yuzhniy Airport to Semennoy in Russia – a distance of more than 1,000 km. Their epic journey in a hot air balloon measuring just 10,000 m3 took place in February 2017.

On 9 February 2017, Ivan Menyaylo, along with fellow countryman Fedor Konyukhov, set a new “Duration” record of 55h 9min 57sec flying over 1,000km from Yuzhniy Airport to Semennoy (Russia) in a hot air balloon of 10’000 m3. Adventurer and priest Konyukhov is well known for achieving a record-breaking solo flight around the world in a balloon in 2016.

Drawing up rules, and controlling and ratifying aeronautical and astronautic records are important aspects of the FAI’s activities.

Since the first record-setting flights were documented in 1906, the FAI has ratified more than 18,000 world records. The list of record holders includes famous names such as Charles Lindbergh, Yuri Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova, Jacqueline Cochran, Steve Fossett and Bertrand Piccard.

On 23 March 2017, the Extra 330LE aerobatic plane, powered by a propulsion system from Siemens, set a new “Speed over a 3km course” record. The speed achieved by pilot Walter Extra at the Dinslaken Schwarze Heide airfield, in Germany, was 337,50 km/h.

On 28 August 2017, 25 wingsuit pilots from three nations set a new record in the category of “Largest formation Records - Wingsuit Flying no Grip” in Lasclaveries, France. The record was performed at 4,000 meters altitude where the shape of a diamond was displayed.

On 23 July 2017, during The World Games in Wroclaw, Poland, Cornelia Mihai set a new “Max Distance” world record (Female category) in Canopy Piloting with a performance of 175,77 meters. She became the first woman from the United Arab Emirates to win a medal at The World Games, when she collected a bronze medal in Canopy Piloting overall rankings.

The 2017 FAI Awards Ceremony took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 25 October, ahead of the 111th FAI General Conference. High-profile guests such as Dr Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), were among those at the event to celebrate the achievements of exceptional pilots and pioneers from across the global air sports arena.

FAI President Frits Brink presented more than a dozen awards to outstanding pilots and air sports supporters from around the world.

A special award, given by the Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation, was presented to Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg who flew around the world aboard their solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse. The two pioneers received one-off “Spirit of St. Louis – Tingmissartoq” medals from Foundation Chairman John Petersen.

AchievementsFAI Young Artists Contest

The FAI Young Artists Contest has taken place every year since 1986. The competition honours the best paintings from youngsters in three age categories: Junior (6-9 years old); Intermediate (10-13); and Senior (14-17).

FAI Members organise either a national competition, or similar process of selection, for the young people resident in their respective countries. The national winning paintings are then submitted to the FAI International Jury. A different theme is chosen every year to inspire the young artists and reflect the many facets of air sports.

Winners are awarded special FAI Young Artists medals and diplomas.

Working to the theme of “Beyond the clouds”, children from across the world were invited to take part in the 2017 FAI Young Artists Contest, which is open to 6 to 17-year-olds from all FAI Member countries.

India’s Mohd Ubaid won the Junior category; Amaan, also from India, won the Intermediate; and Elizaveta Timoshenko from Russia won the Senior category.

This year, the competition saw entries from 16 countries, including: Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, India, Japan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and USA.

General Information

Kazan in Russia was just one of the locations to welcome the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in 2017. This high-velocity FAI-sanctioned championship is followed by millions of fans around the world.



The sessions of the 111th FAI General Conference were held at the Royal Savoy Hotel in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 26 and 27 October 2017. More than 100 delegates from Active and Associate Member Countries, and International Affiliate Members were present, as well as FAI elected Officers, Presidents of Honour, Companions of Honour, and Delegates appointed by Presidents of Commissions and Observers.

The General Conference was officially opened on Wednesday 25 October with a ceremony at which FAI Awards and Diplomas were presented by the President Frits Brink. High-profile guests at this event included Dr Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Bertrand Piccard, FAI Honorary Patron and CEO, pilot and co-founder of Solar Impulse. Several guest speakers had an opportunity to take the stage and present their organisations or projects to the Delegates. They included Erich Wolf from Red Bull Air Race, Yuriy Letser from Noosphere and Deputy Ambassador of Egypt to Switzerland Magdi El Derini, as host of next year’s Conference.

1st FAI World Drone Racing Championships

The organisation of the 1st FAI World Drone Racing Championships was awarded to Shenzhen, China. The competition will take place from 1 to 4 November 2018.

Finance and minutes

The FAI Executive Director (Finance) reported on the 2016 Financial Statements and the General Conference adopted the Auditor’s Report for the year 2016. Later, the Delegates also approved the budget for FAI operations in 2018. All details on the FAI finances, including the report from FAI auditors Price Waterhouse Coopers, are set out in the Minutes of the General Conference and available as annexes to the Minutes, which can be viewed on the FAI website.

FUTURE GENERAL CONFERENCES

The Delegates voted in favour of the bid by Morocco to host the 113th FAI General Conference in Marrakech in 2019. The next FAI General Conference will take place on 26 and 27 October 2018 in Luxor, Egypt.

Air sports are becoming increasingly popular in Asia, with drone racing taking off in China and Korea, and paragliding and paramotoring gaining lots of new fans in many Asian countries.

This means a lot more air sports events in the region; in 2018, paragliding is on the Asian Games programme for the first time, while China is set to host the FAI World Drone Racing Championships and an FAI Drone Racing World Cup event.

So it was fitting that the 1st FAI Air Sports in Asia Summit was held in Hong Kong on 20 March 2017. Topics covered at the summit included the inclusion of paragliding in the Asian Games 2018 and the role of National Airsport Controls (NACs) and FAI Air Sports Commissions.

The following day, some attendees enjoyed a trip to Shenzhen, a Chinese city north of Hong Kong that will host the 1st FAI World Drone Racing Championships in 2018, where they met with representatives of the Aero Sports Federation of China (ASFC).

In November, the FAI was honoured to host the 1st FAI ‒ ASFC World Fly-in Expo (WFE) in Wuhan, China, alongside ASFC, the Wuhan Municipal Government and the Hubei Administration of Sport. The massive event attracted some 300,000 attendees, including 100 exhibitors from general aviation companies and air sports organisations.

FAI Members also had the opportunity to meet at The World Games in Wroclaw, Poland, which was the summer venue for the mid-year FAI Air Sport Commissions Presidents and FAI Active Members Presidents meetings.

− 14 Associate Members: which represent only one or two discipline(s). There can be no more than three associate members in a given country without their forming a national organisation and becoming an Active Member.

− 3 International Affiliate Members: international organisations sharing common goals with FAI.

AERO SPORTS FEDERATION OF CHINAASFC

“Despite its long history, air sports are still in their infancy in China. However, they are undergoing a rapid growth stage. Currently, aeromodelling is the most popular air sport in China, while drone sports are the fastest growing activity of this kind.

“We are working hard to prepare for the 1st FAI World Drone Racing Championships in 2018. We hope to make this competition even more successful than the WFE in Wuhan, which has now become the model for all future events.”

The Aero Sports Federation of China is involved in many of the exciting developments changing the face of air sports in Asia at the moment. Its recent triumphs include co-hosting the hugely successful 1st FAI ‒ ASFC World Fly-in Expo (WFE) in Wuhan in November 2017. Multi-platform digital media means we can now bring the exhilaration and intensity of competitive air sports to more people than ever before.

Jaw-dropping videos of astonishing airborne feats; high quality images that capture the atmosphere as well as the action; clear, concise articles and in-depth interviews with champions old and young: the aim is to create entertaining and informative content for everyone from the balloonist with 50 years’ experience to the little girl who dreams of being a pilot one day.

But you have to keep moving to stay ahead in this fast-changing world, in which social media is an increasingly important means of communication.

In 2017, the FAI launched a new website www.fai.org. With news, profiles, an international competition calendar and databases of athlete ranking and airs sports records, it is the perfect place for the air sports community to keep in touch with what is happening on the competition scene, as well as more generally in air sports.

The FAI has also been working hard to create a media buzz around events, record attempts and anniversaries by sending out press releases, and supporting journalists around the world with resources and photographs.

With a brand new website, and a growing presence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, we expect to reach even more people in 2018.

OLYMPIC CHANNEL

The FAI is delighted with the initial results of its agreement to collaborate on content for the Olympic Channel – a global platform where fans can experience the power of sport and the excitement of the Olympic Games all year round. Signed in 2016, this partnership has yielded very good results over the past 12 months, with a variety of FAI competitions being featured.

Highlights of the 2017 Olympic Channel coverage for FAI included stunning – and occasional hair-raising – live images from the FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships in Canada and the FAI World Swoop Freestyle World Championships in Denmark.

FAI President Frits Brink said: “We know that there is significant interest in air sports internationally, and we are thrilled with the success of this partnership, which allows us to share our passions with Olympic Channel viewers from all over the world.

Noosphere

In February 2017, the FAI signed a strategic partnership naming Noosphere, an organisation focused on scientific research and information provision, as FAI Global Technical Partner.

This agreement resulted in the development of the eNavigator system, a cutting-edge event management system.

Its current applications – tried and tested at The World Games in July 2017 – include creating event websites, integrating with FAI databases, and receiving scores from external scoring systems.

And there are more innovations to come. The development of the system is now at the “fine tuning” stage, the results of which should make it even more valuable to FAI championships held in 2018.

Interview with Noosphere co-founder Max Polyakov:

Why do you think is it relevant for technology companies such as Noosphere to partner with organisations like the FAI?I believe that technology companies are created to improve people’s lives, of which sport is a significant part. Cooperation between Noosphere and FAI began in 2015 when Ukraine hosted the FAI European Championships for Space Models. Noosphere provided high quality streaming of the event and managed to attract more than 30,000 unique viewers. And that was an impressive number for such a specific sport. Traditional offline sports are losing spectators in comparison to cybersports. The companies of the Noosphere community have a lot of experience in cybersports. And we’re going to share that experience with FAI to attract more attention to air sports events.

eNavigator was used at The World Games for the first time. What is your view about being part of one the world’s biggest sporting events?It was a big honour and a huge responsibility at the same time. We’re happy to know that we helped more people to see the real beauty of air sports.

How will you tackle the challenges and promote the opportunities of the use of eNavigator at the upcoming 1st FAI World Drone Racing Championship 2018 in China?We’re ready for the challenges. The World Games was a great project, but the FAI World Drone Racing Championship is exciting as it is a brand new event not only for us, but also for FAI. RED BULL AIR RACE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship and the FAI have been partners since 2005. In 2014, the two organisations signed a new agreement re-confirming the FAI’s international recognition of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

Followed by millions of fans around the world, the Red Bull Air Race World Championship features some of the world’s best race pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. Pilots use the fastest, most agile and lightweight racing planes, such as the Edge 540 V3, to navigate a low-level aerial racetrack of air-filled pylons (air gates) with the aim of finishing as fast as possible, with the fewest penalties. As well as sanctioning the races and approving the race rules and regulations, the FAI supports the Red Bull Air Race by providing a dedicated FAI Safety Delegate at each race, and provides specially designed medals for the Championship.

In 2017, Red Bull Air Race celebrated its landmark 75th race at the season opener in Abu Dhabi and the races that followed made it one of the most exciting seasons to date. After eight races, across three continents, the World Championship title came down to the final run of the final race in Indianapolis, USA with Yoshi Muroya of Japan emerging victorius. His bid to defend the title in 2018 has already begun.

AnnexesFAI Structure

To fulfil its objectives and meet the evolving needs of each air sport and area of activity, the FAI has constantly adjusted its organisational structure. Today, the FAI comprises the following elements:

GENERAL CONFERENCE

The supreme policy-making body defines the aims of FAI, determines its Statutes and By-Laws and elects the President and the Executive Board. The General Conference convenes once a year. It consists of Delegates appointed by Active and Associate Members in good standing, designated representatives of International Affiliate Members in good standing, FAI elected Officers, Presidents of Honour, Honorary Patrons of FAI, Companions of Honour, and Commission Presidents.

EXECUTIVE BOARD

The FAI Executive Board is the principal executive body of FAI, responsible for implementing the policies and decisions made by the General Conference and exercising those powers of the General Conference that are delegated to it by that body. The Executive Board, chaired by the FAI President, is jointly responsible to the General Conference for all decisions made and actions taken between General Conferences.

AIR SPORT COMMISSIONS

The Air Sport Commissions control the activities of the different disciplines governed by the FAI: Aerobatics, Aeromodelling, Amateur-built and Experimental Aircraft, Astronautic Records, Ballooning, General Aviation, Gliding, Hang Gliding and Paragliding, Microlights and Paramotors, Parachuting, Rotorcraft.

MEMBERS

The Member Nations of FAI are represented by their “National Air Sport Control” (NAC). At the General Conference, voting powers are held by FAI Active Members and by the Air Sport Commissions. With more than 100 Members, the FAI brings together at international level representatives of all air sport disciplines.

The FAI Members are categorised as per Statutes:

− Active Members, being those organisations which represent all the disciplines practiced in their respective country.

− Associate Members, which represent only one discipline. There can be no more than two associate members in a given country without their forming a national organisation and becoming an Active Member.

− Temporary Members, being those national organisations which intend to become an Active or Associate Member of the FAI but are not yet in a position to fulfill all the rights and duties of those members.

− International Affiliate Members, other international organisations sharing common goals with the FAI.

− FAI Recognised Organisations, federations active in the development of air sports on a continental and regional level.

REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENTS

FAI Regional Vice Presidents are appointed by the FAI Executive Board to increase the management resources of the FAI in a particular region and provide the Executive Board with a tool for effective regional presence and a mechanism to promote air sports.

VICE PRESIDENTS

The FAI Vice Presidents consist of the Vice Presidents representing Active Members and the Presidents of the Air Sport Commissions.

HEAD OFFICE

The FAI Head Office is managed by the Secretary General, who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the federation.
