FROM THE PRESIDENT2017 was an exciting year as we completed a dozen land preservation projects. Highlights included our new 170-acre

West Brook Preserve and 117-acre Mariners Bank property in Vernon. Twenty five dedicated members stepped up to contribute $266,000 for the West Brook acquisition. We helped purchase two additional flood-prone homes in Oakland and assisted the N.J. DEP and Woodbridge in purchasing four homes, bringing the Blue Acres flood plain buyout total to 142 in Woodbridge.

At our South Branch Preserve we completed a well and welcomed City Green as the new manager of the organic farm. All 145 plots at the Community Garden were utilized and gardeners generously donated 560 pounds of fresh produce to local food pantries. We completed our first year of a three year project to convert 31 acres of former corn fields into our new Wildflower and Butterfly Meadows.

We presented our fifth Rosalie Lavinthal Volunteer of the Year Award to Glaxo Smith Kline, and REI contributed $5,000 to develop a small parking lot at our Ramapo Mountain Preserve in Mahwah and employees from their Paramus store helped build a new trail. Our venerable Partners for Parks program hosted 12 projects this year putting 134

volunteers to work. Thanks to a generous donation from New Jersey Natural Gas, we now have a four wheel drive truck to help with these projects and property clean ups.

Our planning department completed 10 plans, including five flood acquisition buyout plans in Bergen County and the William Penn Foundation’s Delaware River Watershed Initiative Phase II Plan to guide acquisition and stewardship work for the next three years. We have now completed a total of 143 plans in the past fifteen years. We also awarded $15,000 to our 53rd and 54th scholarship winners, bringing total awards to $255,000 since the program began in 1985.

While we were sad to say goodbye to Christi Rokicki, who did great work as our Vice President of Development for five years, our mood brightened when we welcomed Danielle Wolfrum in her place.

The remarkable mapping work we do was recognized with a first place award at the 30th Annual NJ DEP mapping contest for our Sussex County Open Space Plan Update.

It is more apparent than ever that our members, supporters and donors are critical in making all of our land conservation work happen. We thank you and hope that you remain as excited and enthusiastic about our important conservation work as we are.

LAND PRESERVATIONWe preserved 560 acres this past year including five farms and

six flood-prone homes.

WEST BROOK PRESERVEWEST MILFORD, PASSAIC COUNTY

The West Brook Preserve is 170 acres and is one of the most important watershed properties in the state and contains the source of the West Brook, one of the primary sources of water for the Wanaque Reservoir, which provides two million New Jersey residents drinking water. The Land Conservancy purchased the West Brook Preserve for $975,000, with funding provided by the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Passaic River Coalition, the Green Acres Program, the New Jersey Highlands

Council, the Victoria Foundation, the PSE&G Foundation, the Union Foundation, the E.J. Grassman Trust, and 25 individual donors who provided $266,000 in private contributions.

KJ & STAR D FARMSHARMONY TOWNSHIP, WARREN COUNTY

KJ farm is located in the heart of the Warren County farm belt and features vast open fields and a picturesque pond. The adjacent

farm, Star D, was also preserved in 2017 for a total of 99.6 acres.

TERRACE POND NORTH TRAIL CONNECTOR, WEST MILFORDPASSAIC COUNTY

When a bank foreclosedon a homeowner struggling withflood damage, The Land Conservancy saw a chance to secure the Terrace Pond NorthTrail, which connects the Abram S.Hewitt State Forest to WawayandaState Park. Our partner, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, assisted with funds from their own Nonprofit Planning Incentive Grant, and will continue to maintain this amazing highlands trail.

TRUMAN FIELD EXPANSIONOAKLAND BOROUGH, BERGEN COUNTY

The Park Expansion Project in Oakland targets homes located within the flood plain along the Ramapo river that have catastrophically flooded in the past. With The Land Conservancy’s assistance, Oakland Borough is purchasing these homes, demolishing them, and adding the parcels to the adjacent Truman Field Park, thus removing vulnerable people from harm’s way while expanding Oakland’s public park. The Land Conservancy purchased two more properties in 2017 and expects to see more of these closings in the coming year! To learn more about all of our preserved land, go to tlc-nj.org

Malon’s Farm, Hope Township

MALON’S FARMHOPE TOWNSHIP, WARREN COUNTY

Malon’s Farm, a beautiful 62-acre rolling hay farm was preserved by Hope Township and The Land Conservancy of New Jersey with generous grants from the State Agriculture Development Committee and the Warren County Board of Chosen Freeholders. This farm was preserved as a result of an application to the Hope Township Municipal Farmland Preservation Program.

Malon’s Farm is the 18th farm to be preserved in Hope Township and sits within a half mile of two other large preserved farms and New Jersey’s Jenny Jump State Forest.

FLOOD-PRONE HOMEWOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, MIDDLESEX COUNTY

A home in The Blue Acres flood-buyout area of Woodbridge Township suffered extensive damage, including a seriously-damaged foundation, during Superstorm Sandy in October of 2012. Blue Acres has led the effort to acquire and demolish homes in the hardest hit areas of the Township. The Land Conservancy has been working with Woodbridge Township to secure the flood buy out area and gain applications to the State’s Blue Acres Program. The Land Conservancy negotiated with the bank that owned the home, on behalf of the Township and was able to purchase the parcel and the damaged home on it for $25,000, in 2017. The funding for the acquisition was provided by the Township.

The New Jersey Blue Acres program has acquired 140 homes in the Township and nearly all of them have already been razed. The flood buy out program in the Township has secured 20.69 acres of land within the flood zone. This program has allowed many hard-hit families to find high and dry, secure places to live. The Township’s commitment and dedication to this critically important program is also a key factor that has made it such a tremendous success and The Land Conservancy is glad to have had the opportunity to assist.

STEWARDSHIPWith a new trench at South Branch Preserve and 12 Partners for Parks

projects, 2017 was a busy year for our stewardship staff, partners, and volunteers!

SOUTH BRANCH PRESERVE2017 was another productive year at The Land Conservancy of New Jersey’s 405-acre South Branch Preserve in Mount Olive Township.

We began an effort to establish our 31-acre Butterfly Fields project by planting native grass seed. The fields are “greening up” now and will be mowed several times this season. Next spring we will plant the wildflower seeds. By the summer of 2019, the meadows will be visually stunning and will create essential habitat for all of the native pollinator populations, including bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, specifically the monarch butterfly.

When we needed more water for our well at our new organic farm, Henderson Well and Pump Company came in to double the well’s capacity. This will provide sufficient

water supply to the farm and Community Garden. We extend our thanks to the Leavens Foundation, Inc. of Long Valley, whose generous grant made this possible, and to Burt Wortmann of West Morris Excavating, Inc., of Columbia, who generously dug the ditch to house the electric line for free. As a result, additional vegetables will be harvested in the upcoming spring and summer.

Over time, the South Branch Preserve will serve as a showcase for watershed preservation and restoration with organic farming, a community garden, and resource-based recreation including fishing and hiking.

PARTNERS FOR PARKS The Land Conservancy’s Partners for Parks programs gained four new companies participating in our projects. In total, we had 134 volunteers participate in 12 projects.

Through our membership with EarthShare, Signet Financial did a spring clean up of the grounds at The Land Conservancy’s Wild Acres Preserve and GlaxoSmithKline once again supported us at our headquarters for our fall cleanup.

JCPL employees, students from Centenary University and BASF employees all volunteered at the community garden, helping with spring and fall clean ups.

Twenty REI volunteers installed a new half mile trail, at our Ramapo Mountain Preserve. They edged the trail with logs, did some pruning, and removed rocks and debris from the trail.

This year we received Corporate Sponsorships from investors Bank, BASF, Round Table Wealth Management, New Jersey Natural Gas, and GlaxoSmithKline.

To date, Partners for Parks has completed 556 projects, with 9,526 volunteers. To learn more about how your company can get invlolved in this program, email Barbara McCloskey at [email protected]

COMMUNITY GARDEN Last year, the Community Garden at the South Branch Preserve hosted two Open Houses - one for Earth Day and one for Make a Difference Day - and a special event to celebrate the solar eclipse in August. We invite everyone to visit the garden and walk the trails. We also participated in the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum “Open Gates” weekend, and welcomed visitors from all over Morris County to tour the garden.

The generous Community Gardeners donated over 560 pounds of fresh vegetables to The Mount Olive Food Pantry hosted at Christ Church and Drakestown Church Food Pantry.

SPECIAL EVENTSEarth Day, 123 different bird species identified at the World Series of Birding, the 9th Annual Gray Cup Golf Classic and our team at Gran Fondo NJ led an

action-packed year for fundraising and events!

WORLD SERIES OF BIRDING The World Series of Birding is the country’s largest and most prestigious birding competition and provides a fun and interactive way to raise money for critically needed conservation priorities. The Land Conservancy’s team, The Highlands Hawks, identified 123 species in the 2017 Annual World Series of Birding! Armed with binoculars and spotting scopes, the team combed Sussex County with one objective in mind: identifying as many species of birds as possible in a 24-hour period. Thanks to their tireless work, over $12,000 was raised through pledges from our members and supporters.

EARTH DAY AND ECLIPSE

The 47th annual celebration of Earth Day was held at the Community Garden at our South Branch Preserve. Visitors enjoyed a guided tour of the garden and walking trail with access to a bird blind and wildlife observation station.

The solar eclipse on August 21 allowed us a unique opportunity to hold an event at the South Branch Preserve to view this once in a lifetime event. Despite threatening weather, the clouds parted long enough for our 60 participants to take a look at the phenomenon through special glasses and homemade viewing boxes. After the eclipse, participants were treated to a tour of the preserve.

GRAN FONDO 2017

For the third year, The Land Conservancy hosted Team Preservation in Gran Fondo NJ. Starting and ending in Morristown, NJ Gran Fondo NJ offers a choice of route lengths, ranging from 18 to 107 miles, and timed hill segments for a wide range of cyclists from the casual weekend rider to the well-trained endurance athlete.

The routes wind their way through some of New Jersey’s best cycling roads and pass by 2,200 scenic acres that The Land Conservancy helped preserve. This year, Team Preservation raised $10,000 for The Land Conservancy.

GRAY CUP ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

The Gray Cup Annual Golf Classic is our premiere event and this year marked the 9th and was held on Monday, September 18 at the beautiful Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville. Attendees enjoyed a fantastic day of golf at this widely acclaimed venue while helping us raise $126,000 to continue our statewide award-winning programs in land preservation, stewardship, and education.

The Gray Cup Invitational Golf Classic is named in honor of dedicated conservationist C. Graydon “Gray” Rogers for his many years of service to The Land Conservancy of New Jersey, including 10 years on the Board of Trustees and three years as Chairman of the Board. Despite gray skies, the rain held off and golfers savored a delicious cocktail reception and buffet dinner overlooking the beautiful grounds at sunset.

Winners included Riley Kete and Dyanna Pepitone for Longest Drive, Bill Rubenstein and Teresa Finlay for Closest to the Hole, and Greg Moran was declared individual Champ with 71 even par.

ARBOR DAY PRESENTATION

Membership Manager, Barbara McCloskey held an Arbor Day planting and presentation at the Bruce Street School for the Deaf in Newark. From kindergarten to eighth grade, 75 students participated in the Arbor Day celebration. The students had the opportunity to decorate small pots with Earth Day stickers before filling them with soil and choosing a tree seedling for planting. A short presentation was given about The Land Conservancy’s work, the importance of protecting our land and water resorces as well as instructions on how to care for the tree seedlings while an interpreter signed for the students. “It was refreshing to see the kids so excited about planting and trees, said Barbara. “This is my third year visiting the school and the students have continually shown enthusiasm and excitement for the opportunity to plant and talk about the importance of trees and how they can make a difference in their individual neighborhoods.”

GLAXOSMITHKLINE AWARDED THE ROSALIE LAVINTHAL VOLUNTEER

OF THE YEAR AWARD

This year’s recipient is GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which best exemplified Rosalie Lavinthal’s spirit of volunteerism and giving back to the community.

Since 2004, over 257 GSK employees have completed twenty-four Partners for Parks projects with The Land Conservancy. Volunteers have worked at 13 different sites in New Jersey accomplishing a variety of tasks including removing invasive plants and shrubs, marking trails, planting, weeding, replacing fencing, and more.

GSK’s shared commitment to the local community and environment make the company and its employees an excellent choice for this award. This is the fifth year we are presenting the award to an outstanding corporation.

We are thankful of GSK’s longtime support of The Land Conservancy, which has enabled us to continue to expand our stewardship efforts through our Partners for Parks program.

The Land Conservancy’s award-winning municipal services program, Partners for Greener Communities, assists government and private organizations to preserve, protect and steward open spaces through comprehensive planning services.

Our highly customized program enables client communities to document their distinct natural resources and create unique community spaces to support healthy, vibrant communities. Since this program started, we have worked with government and private organizations in 75 towns, six counties, and nine nonprofit organizations receive

$239,255,006 in grant funds for open space and farmland preservation. To date, our staff has completed 139 plans.

In addition, The Land Conservancy works with towns to achieve Sustainable New Jersey certification. By reducing waste, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and improving environmental equity, certification empowers communities to build a better future.

In mapping news, our Geographic Information System Manager, Ken Fung, came in first place at the 30thAnnual NJDEP Mapping Contest.

This is the second awardKen has won for his map, showcasing our work assisting Sussex County in updating their Open Space and Recreation Plan.

“The maps created and developed by Ken showcase the high level of technical expertise and capacity of our Geographic Information Services (GIS) department, and the skill with which our staff incorporates local knowledge to prepare the tools used to identify priorities for preservation,” said Barbara Heskins Davis, Vice President of Programs.

MUNICIPAL SERVICES

The Delaware River Watershed Initiative (DRWI) is a new chapter in a long, proud history of local leaders championing clean water. More than fifty organizations are working to protect forests and farms, clean up streams, and make our cities and suburbs greener. As part of the Phase 1 DRWI, The Land Conservancy of New Jersey has completed 15 projects preserving 2,058 acres within the Delaware Watershed of the New Jersey Highlands.

The Land Conservancy led the completion of the Phase 2 Plan for the New Jersey Highlands Cluster by writing, coordinating, preparing, and completing the plan. Over 100 ArcGIS

maps were developed, monthly meetings organized and deliverables were provided to the William Penn Foundation.

As a direct result of the work done by The Land Conservancy, the NJ Highlands Cluster realigned its goals, strengthened organizational

relationships, and targeted projects to the areas of greatest need of protection and restoration.

The collaborative model encouraged by DRWI has greatly accelerated our work in the watershed. The planning and inclusionary, consensus based approach supported by the Foundation and incorporated into the DRWI, has brought 11 different organizations into a collaborative effort to improve the quality and quantity in the watershed.

The Delaware River Watershed Initiative is making a difference in our work and the work of our partners, and we are excited to be a part of this initiative.

We have assisted 75 towns, 6 counties, and 9 nonprofit organizations receive $239,255,006 in grant funds for open space and farmland preservation.

In 2015, The Land Conservancy’s Land Preservation and Development teams joined forces to implement a new fundraising campaign to help preserve more of the landscapes we love here in the Garden State. We called it our “Over the Top” campaign and the Land Preservation team assembled a variety of projects where The Land Conservancy has secured nearly all of the funds necessary to acquire a property, but a funding gap remained to complete the project. We are working with partners to educate them about these critical acquisition projects and ask them to help us fill the gap to put the project “over the top.”Thanks to “Over the Top Campaign,” The Land Conservancy was able to complete the purchase of a 170-acre property in West Milford known as the West Brook Preserve. It is one of the most important watershed properties remaining in the state of New Jersey and contains the source of the West Brook, one of the primary sources of water for the Wanaque Reservoir, which provides drinking water for two million New Jersey residents.
