Brighter Futures are pleased to be able to continue to support Jersey families when they need us. This report highlights how in 2017 we have supported families with varying types of need and we are continually encouraged by the feedback we have received from clients who have participated in our programmes; that we are able to help provide them with the tools they need to achieve positive changes in their lives and we are committed to helping the clients become the primary agent of the change they want to see.

Chairs report

We continue to work closely with a number of agencies and partners to help reach those that need our services. I am proud of the breadth and depth of skills and experience that we have within our Brighter Futures team that allows us to provide the right support at the right time, in a safe and inclusive environment. It is clear that we have real strength on our side.

Of course, in order for us to help Jersey families we require funding and we are truly grateful for the donations we receive from our supporters with some 85% of our running costs being covered by donations from trusts, corporates, private standing orders, public collections and events. That’s not to mention other donations we receive of food, clothing and home items as well as the many hours that volunteers give to help make us a success. Without that support it wouldn’t be possible for us to do what we do and 2018 will see us continue to focus our efforts on fundraising to deliver another successful year for Brighter Futures and our clients.

2018 also sees the introduction of the Charity Register. We are keen to see the Jersey charitable sector flourish and we will be working tirelessly to ensure that Brighter Futures meets it obligations under the regulatory requirements of the Charities Law.

Finally, I would like to say thank you once again to everyone that supported Brighter Futures in 2017 and am very much looking forward to an even brighter 2018.

Treasurer’s reportby Karen Morris

It has been another busy year for Brighter Futures and we have worked tirelessly and successfully to raise sufficient funds to continue offering ongoing support to local families.

As a charity we are funded by a combination of donation from sources such as trusts, corporate contributions, private standing orders, public collections, States of Jersey and proceeds from various events.

The costs of successfully providing all of our much needed services increases year on year and 2017 has been no exception as costs continue to rise in line with Jersey’s cost of living. Furthermore, with the demand for our work increasing, it has been necessary to seek further funding for the additional resources required to be able to

maintain our service levels and continue to reach the families that need our help. Total overheads including salaries were budgeted at around £535k for 2017.

However, despite facing these significant challenges surrounding funding and cost control, Brighter Futures has successfully maintained a necessary reserve throughout the year. The charity has also increased its operational staff headcount and has upgraded various systems, whilst managing to keep overhead expenditure within the Board’s budget.

In addition to regular monitoring by the Treasurer and Finance Committee, the Board reviews the financial position of the charity on a quarterly basis, ensuring strict governance of charitable funds and focusing on improving efficiencies and continuing to make the best use of resources wherever possible.

Whilst it has been a challenging year in terms of maintaining the levels of funding and monitoring increasing costs, we are in a good position for the forthcoming year. Some funding has already been secured for 2018 giving us some comfort over the coverage of costs, although significant work will still need to be under taken throughout the year by our excellent fundraising team to source the remainder. Our 2018 budget has already been prepared ready for board consideration and therefore we are well placed to guide the charity through another successful 12 months.

Client feedback

“When I walked into the bridge with my second, I literally had my keyworker come and get me from the entrance and show me into which ever group I was there for to start as I had lost my identify and my confidence and felt like I was in a bubble is the best way to describe it. It took me a good 6 months to settle because it was all new faces and challenges and I even remember being encouraged time and time again to try the courses but I wouldn’t as my son was so clingy going to creche. With the massive influence of Brighter Futures staff my son went from not being able to be away from me for 10 minutes to happily (after 18 months) walking into creche or Growing Together group on his own with a new found confident cheeky, innocent smile on his face. I was then able to experience and learn from most of the courses on offer, I loved Wants and Wishes and Making Changes especially not to mention Inbetweenies. These courses and most importantly some of the staff have been such a huge beneficial influence to me and continue to be making me realise that negativity doesn’t always have the upper hand in our lives and positivity and change are ok!! ”

“I have enjoyed my time at Brighter Futures. Wants and wishes really helped me get the inner strength to find the old me that had once been lost. I have found my voice again. It was a shame that I was unable to finish one of the courses as I was enjoying it but I have the audio to work from. I am glad to be working and Brighter Futures helped me gain the confidence to help me figure out what I want from life and go out there and get it.”

Thank you!

All of us at Brighter Futures would like to say a very big Thank You to those who have helped us to continue offering support through the past year. From funding, financial donations, food/clothing donations, volunteers and so much more, the community support we receive is essential to our running and we couldn’t do it without you!
