ABOUT MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION® OF INDIAMake-A-Wish Foundation® of India is a nonprofit organization affiliated to

Make-A-Wish Foundation® International, a prestigious foundation which has

37 other affiliates worldwide serving about 49 countries. The Foundation is

dedicated to granting the most cherished wish of children between the ages of

three and 18 years, living with life-threatening illnesses, irrespective of their

socio-economic status, caste, race or religion. It is a Registered Trust under

Bombay Public Trust Act 1950. Each affiliate works within the framework of

stringent international policies and guidelines.

Make-A-Wish is the most preferred and highly rated charity with FOUR STAR

rating by International Charity Navigator for 11 years in a row and thus we are

a global brand and a pioneer in this effort. The Indian affiliate was established

in 1996 and since then we have fulfilled more than 52,710 wishes across nine

divisions in India. There are nine divisions of the organization functioning in

the country viz. Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur,

Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune. Its head office is based in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

On an average, we fulfil around 7000 wishes per annum.

Power of a Wish: For children battling life-threatening illnesses, the joys of

childhood are replaced with a daily battle for survival, painful treatment,

medication and endless rounds of hospitals.

The fulfilment of the most cherished wish of a child, who has very little hope

of enjoying a normal, healthy life not only gives happiness and joy to him/her

but also has a therapeutic effect on the child. Doctors have often reported an

improvement in the child’s physical condition, after the fulfilment of his / her

dearest wish. A wish-fulfilment makes a sick child believe that anything is

possible – even the future.

Typically, children’s wishes fall into four categories:

Wish to go... e.g. to a theme park, a sporting event, the beach, travel within India

Wish to be... e.g. a policeman, a firefighter, a chef

Wish to meet... e.g. a favourite Bollywood celebrity, TV artist, sports person

or athlete

Wish to have... e.g. cricket kit, remote control car, kitchen doll set, computer,

mobile phone

Volunteers:

Each year, volunteers generously give their time, talent and energy to fulfill

our mission in India. The need to reach out and identify the wish of every

eligible child is far more and thus leads to our constant need for more

volunteers.

From the Desk of the Managing Trustee

From the Desk of the CEO

Dear Stakeholders,

We are extremely grateful to all our well-wishers and donors who made wishes come true

in this financial year.

We place on record our sincere and a very special thank you to our esteemed donors –

Jewelers For Children (JFC) and TATA Trusts for their continued faith in our cause.

Not to forget our volunteers who work tirelessly and passionately to meet every eligible

child and identify the innermost cherished wish, the staff who work with the wish

organising volunteers from the corporate world, partners like KidZania who help to make

the wish granting a memorable experience, the vendors who form our supply chain and

go to any extent to get the wish gifts beautifully wrapped and delivered in time. And

the parents of our wish children, who enthusiastically participate in every event that is

organised for them.

We are glad to have the support of such like-minded people and look forward to their

continued support to help us achieve the Vision 2020, to grant wish of the 75,000th child in

our silver jubilee year 2020.

Yours truly

Maneck Davar

Dear Well-wishers,

This financial year has been full of challenges for Make-A-Wish India.

As the saying goes, Change is the only constant... such was the case with us. We had a

change in almost every aspect of the wish process this year. It was a very difficult decision

to close down our wish granting programme in Coimbatore, followed by having to relocate

office and start with a new team in Bangalore and Delhi. All these led to spending time

in operational set-up and eventually in identification and then granting lesser number of

wishes. Once the teams were in place, we geared up operations and fundraising efforts.

As on date till this financial year-end, Make-A-Wish India has granted wishes of

52,710 children.

Strategy and our approach is in place with the clear focus to achieve Vision 2020.

We thank all our well-wishers and will meet them in person in due course to secure their

commitment, not only for the next financial year, but for a long-term support, till the

financial year 2020-2021.

With faith and goodwill,

Deepak S Bhatia

SPIRIT 2018: A BRIEF SYNOPSIS

To encourage children in age five to 18 years, diagnosed with cancer or survivors, to

demonstrate their talent, on the eve of International Childhood Cancer Day, an event called

“Spirit 2018” was conducted in the professional format.

Last year “Spirit 2017” was conducted as a funfair organized inside the NSCI at Worli. This

event saw almost 300+ kids diagnosed with cancer, come forth to enjoy the day. Bharat Ratna

Sachin Tendulkar graced the occasion to motivate and boost the morale of the kids.

In “Spirit 2018”, Make-A-Wish India with support from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mystique,

Artscape, Jewelers For Children and many NGO partners, organized an individual singing and

dancing talent show for cancer diagnosed kids and survivors. The event included auditions

round to semi-finals, professional coaching and the Grand Finale.

The cycle of the event from Auditions on 23rd & 24th Jan to the Grand Finale of Spirit 2018 on

10th Feb ’18 at Nehru Science Centre was quite a journey. To make it convenient for children

to participate, the Tata Memorial Hospital hosted the auditions in its auditorium. 161 children

participated with great zeal and were excited to get selected for the next rounds. Posters had

been put up in various centres like Tata Hospital, Borges Home, St. Jude Sewri, St. Jude Parel

and Indian Cancer Society.

The competition was fierce and there was no space for any complacency. It was a delight to

see that nothing stopped the children to participate in the competition, not even their being

on a wheelchair or having to use crutches. All the 161 participants were given participation

certificates, dietician approved tasty snack boxes and various gift hampers from sponsors like

Nestle, Disney, Cadbury, Dabur, dried fruits and stationery kits. In the semi-final round there

were 36 kids and then for the finals 18 kids were selected. These finalist kids were provided

with professional coaching for singing and dancing; they were also given custom-made dresses

to match their profile and eventually got a nice strolley bag, a duffel bag, tracksuit with a set of

three t-shirts and a trophy. In this event we had a very special child, Rehan Mirza, whose mother

was as excited as the kid. His mother shared with us “Rehan is going to be operated sometime

later after the event and his only wish was to perform in the finale one last time with both of his

legs. It was an emotional moment for him, as his mother told Make-A-Wish team that Rehan is

having his leg amputated by doctors to save his life”. It was not just Rehan, however, we met so

many kids with emotional stories during this event. We had two participants, Chidagni Pandey

and Khwaish Ansari, who came all the way from Kolkata just to participate in the event.

It wasn’t a cakewalk for the participants as they had to battle real hard to make their way to

the finals. After the quarter-finals all the selected participants were provided with individual

mentors to guide them. The participants practised really hard and our partner Artscape

executed the event with flying colours. They provided the participants with individual

mentors so that they get the best guidance and bolster their confidence to the zenith. Around

20 children got selected for the finals. There were regular practice sessions before the finals

in centres like Borges Home and Indian Cancer Society. Invitation cards were distributed to

various stakeholders, donors, volunteers and well-wishers.

The finale was held at Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai on 10 February 2018. All the participants

from the audition round were called to see the event with their parents and before the

programme they were sent to watch the movie “Science Odyssey” in Nehru Science Centre. This

event would not have been possible without the volunteers, who came to us from Mystique,

Make-A-Wish India and Disney.

The grand finale event was hosted by eminent mimicry artist Shrikant Rao and Deepak S

Bhatia — CEO at Make-A-Wish India. The event started with the opening song “Itni Shakti

Hume Dena Data”, sung by four kids who had come for auditions, but could not make it to

the finale list. This was followed by Deepak sharing the “Wish Journey” concept, to showcase

how memorable wishes get granted. This started with Mr. Uday Joshi the founder of Make-A-

Wish India sharing how as a parent he lost his son to cancer and got inclined to start the wish

granting programme in India. This was followed by Dr. Banavali – HOD Paediatrics at Tata

Memorial Hospital, sharing how granting of a wish has helped children to stay positive and not

abandon their medical treatment.

The next person on stage was Bhavya Gandhi aka Tappu from Tarak Mehta ka Oolta Chashma

who recited one of his poems and shared his experience and talked about his mother Yashoda

Gandhi’s journey with Make-A-Wish India. She has been associated with Make-A-Wish India

for almost three years. To show how wish experience is made memorable, there was a special

performance by Mr. Luke, who has been associated with Make-A-Wish India for many years,

and in spite of his busy schedule, flew down from US to perform with the children. Last but

not the least was our wish child Harsh, who was under the treatment of Dr. Banavali, whose

wish to have a Mitashi CD system was granted in 2004, which helped him like music and thus

not abandon his medical treatment. Today, Harsh is studying civil engineering at IIT Bombay

and has completed his 2nd year successfully. It was now time for Shrikant to show his skills

with the kids with mimicry in voices of various celebrities. He very beautifully compered the

evening and the audience stayed glued to their seats. Mr. Shiamak Davar and Master Marzi

Pestonji, eminent choreographers in the dance industry, made a smashing entry in the event

to cheer up our children.

Our eminent judges: (singing) — Mr. Sairam Iyer, Mr. Amit Sinha, Mr. Rabbani Khan and

dancing — Dr Sheela Bhutala, Ms. Mini Pradhan and Mrs. Komal Shah, were impressed with

the children’s performances and showcased a bit of their own talent, with Sairam singing in

both male & female voices being the highlight of the evening. Eminent personalities came up

on the stage to hand over the trophies to all the 18 finalists, who had either won the contest, or

bagged the first or second runner-up slot in the event.

The Bharatnatyam dance performance by Chidagni received a standing ovation by all present.

The event concluded with our Trustee Mr. Bobby Kothari presenting the vote of thanks on

behalf of Make-A-Wish India and Team Mystique. He thanked all the well-wishers, volunteers,

the children and their families who made Spirit 2018 a big hit.

Post the event, one of our participants Harsh Modi shared with his father: “Papa, today I felt

like I don’t have any problem anymore.” Laxmi Priya one of the participants who couldn’t

make it to the finals but reached the venue just to watch the Finale kept asking us why we

didn’t choose her as a finalist. However, she enjoyed the programme and was very happy in

the end.

And not to forget our brave heart Rehan, who gave us a fantastic dance performance on the

song of Bajirao Mastaani, collected his trophy & prizes and then rushed to the hospital by 8 pm

for getting admitted for his surgery that was performed on 12th Feb. These kids really showed

us on 10th Feb that they really are brave hearts and it is they who motivate us to go that extra

mile every day to make every wish come true. Transforming lives, one wish at a time.

OUR WISH-GRANTING PARTNERS

Working in partnership with Jewelers For Children, Make-A-Wish

India was able to establish a foothold for hope and happiness in a

country where wishes used to go unanswered. As a result, thousands

of children have already seen their often humble, but heartfelt,

wishes become a reality. Thanks to Jewelers For Children, India’s sick

children, their families and medical caregivers, now sometimes dare

to dream. They dream of little miracles at first – a new toy, some new

clothes, something musical. And, as they see these wishes met, one by

one, twenty by twenty, these people begin to dream new things. They

dream of days that have no pain, of lives spent at home with loved

ones, of full recoveries. This is the real magic of Make-A-Wish India.

Time and again, KidZania has partnered with Make-A-Wish foundation

to create memories enabling positive impact on society.

Speaking on the Kidzania – Make-A-Wish association, Mr. Viraj Jit

Singh (CMO, KidZania), said: “At KidZania, it’s our mission to promote

positive change and build strong community awareness among our

children. In India we have two programmes: “Kids for a Cause” where

our kid visitors are empowered to contribute positively to society and

the “Kids for a Better World” where we target to host at least 10,000

less privileged and specially abled children each calendar year and

ensure they get an equal opportunity to experience KidZania and

understand the world around them better. We are extremely happy to

partner with Make-A-Wish for their unique initiative and look forward

to working with them again to spread happiness and the experience of

Kidzania to kids all over.”

Cox & Kings has been supporting Make-A-Wish India for travel wishes.

Make-A-Wish India is overwhelmed by the support from Cox & Kings.

Wishes like that of Sravanan who wished to visit Shirdi temple, Lokesh

who wished to visit Ooty with his parents, Suhas Kamat who wished

to visit Taj Mahal and Tanush who wanted to visit Mysore are some of

the most cherished wishes that were made possible, courtesy

Cox & Kings.

awareness about cancer and identify patients who are in need of

financial help for the treatment of cancer. The students of the school

got to experience the process of wish granting as they were presenting

the gifts to our wish children. In order to support this cause Ecole

Mondiale granted 74 wishes of children. Ecole Mondiale has been

The Kids For Wish Kids® programme allows kids to help grant the wishes

of kids with life-threatening medical conditions. When kids decide to

take the initiative to raise fund to grant wishes, then with the help of

Ketto (an online fundraising platform) Make-A-Wish India creates a

page dedicated to the child with all the details and asks for the funds.

Kids then spread the cause across their circles on various social media

platforms seeking donations.

Teachers and parents often serve as advisors, but ownership of the

project belongs solely to the kids involved. Kids like Naisha Dadwania

and Aashi Doshi from Aditya Birla School and Madhulika and

Shreyanshi from Bombay International School have helped Make-A-

Wish India grant wishes.

If you like to refer Make-A-Wish India to any school, just drop a mail to
