We need stories that transport, transfix, and transform us. And we need places where people from all walks of life can come together to laugh and cry, get lost and find themselves in those stories. That’s why we started the film festival, and that’s why the festival runs two theaters year-round: to share stories that help us connect with our neighbors, and see ourselves and our world more clearly. In the pages that follow, we offer a few highlights from a milestone year for our organization. It’s remarkable what we’ve accomplished since we began our nationally-renowned film festival in 2005 and opened two world-class downtown theaters, the State Theatre in 2007 and the Bijou in 2013, bringing art to Traverse City that would otherwise be hundreds of miles away, Times may test our faith and try our spirits, but our community continues to rally around the movies that ignite us and remind us of our shared humanity at 35 frames per second. When you volunteer, donate, become a member, or see a movie on one of our screens, you help keep this flame burning. You help us welcome hundreds of nonprofits to share their eye-opening stories. You open the minds of thousands of students who experience the ineffable magic of movies on the big screen. You give the gift of the movies to one and all, making 30% of our tickets available at no cost. For all of this and for so much more, we couldn’t be more grateful. The State Theatre’s first 100 years were filled with thrills, chills, and life-changing moments. Celebrating the State’s Centennial this year rekindled our passion for seeing the majestic State Theatre through the next 100 years of Just Great Movies. Bring on 2017!

A YEAR IN REVIEWIn 2016, we welcomed over a quarter million people to see the best movies we could find, including an average of one free or low cost community event each and every day. Oscar-winning filmmaker and passionate movie lover Michael Moore programs the festival and the State and Bijou. He puts his vast knowledge of film to work on the puzzle of getting the very best in first run narrative and documentary films, Hollywood classics, and live entertainment on the stage and screens of our historic movie palaces.

A TRULY HISTORIC YEAR

1. Opening night standing ovation for the directors of TCFF XII’s official US selections. 2. One of America’s most highly regarded film critics, Anne Thompson of IndieWire, moderated our historic summit of female filmmakers and industry leaders.

The Future is Female In our 12 years, the TCFF has remade and revolutionized the concept of what a film festival could be. We’ve also built two movie palaces that are unlike any others in this country, and we’ve helped other Michigan theaters follow our lead. And once again this year, we made history at the film festival: all of the US Official Selections were directed by women. We’ve done all of this right smack in the middle of “nowhere.” And people elsewhere have taken notice. Who would have thought that a place called Traverse City could impact our beloved American populist art form, the cinema?

State Centennial This year our crown jewel, the historic State Theatre, celebrated its Centennial—100 years of movies on Front Street, 100 years anchoring downtown, 100 years of people gathering together to experience the power of great entertainment together.

In those 100 years, much has changed in downtown Traverse City: gone are the department and music stores, making room for boutiques, restaurants, and books. But through it all, the State has remained—a beacon of chasing light that gives Traverse City its heartbeat and calls us together in our vibrant community town square.

Walk of FameSince we reopened the doors of the State Theatre for the first Traverse City Film Festival in 2005, we’ve been gathering handprints of the people we have brought to TC, including Madonna, Wim Wenders, Kristen Bell, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Donen, Bill Maher, Patton Oswalt, Matthew Modine, Phil Donahue, and John Waters. As part of our centennial celebration, we installed a Hollywood-style Walk of Fame under the State’s historic marquee, creating one of TC’s most visited and photographed destinations.

It’s hard to imagine downtown Traverse City without the warm beacon situated in the middle the Front Street’s 200 block, a light that helped lead the city toward the prosperity we now enjoy.

It’s also hard to imagine how the city’s downtown would look without the theater’s resurrection nearly a decade ago.

The State Theatre’s historic marquee spilled its soft light onto bustling crowds each night this week while festival fans packed the city’s center for the 12th rendition of the Traverse City Film Festival. That image of film lovers basking in the warm summer evening air, faces aglow with bright light thrown in all directions from the theater’s historic marquee, has become synonymous with late July in Traverse City.

But to those of us who call the Grand Traverse region home, that beacon means so much more.

We know that cornerstone as a place where our children experienced their first big-screen film for a price that couldn’t buy a pack of gum. It’s a place where we see

the independent films, both old and new, that have become scarce in a blockbuster world. And it’s where we watch important cultural events happening in faraway places broadcast live to our community.

It is both an icon of downtown Traverse City’s evolution and a reminder of the city’s historic charm that keeps our feet planted firmly in the sand.

The movie house that started its life as Julius Steinberg’s Lyric Theatre in July 1916 burned twice and was rebuilt twice in its lifetime — the second reconstruction gave birth to the State Theatre and the landmark marquee. But those two rebuilds weren’t the theater’s most important resurrection.

The State closed as a movie theater in 1996 and, like many downtown Traverse City businesses, sat dark for many years while suburban sprawl pulled patrons seeking food, shopping and entertainment away from Front Street.

Many point to the State’s reopening under the flag of the Traverse City Film Festival in

2007 as the first domino to fall in a cascade that helped revitalize the downtown district. Empty store fronts filled. Businesses stayed open late into the evening as filmgoers flocked to Front Street for dinner and a movie. And investors bought and built on long-vacant lots.

It was a line in the sand that helped separate Traverse City from many of the economic problems that continue to plague many small Midwestern towns today.

It’s also a symbol of a community-wide effort that required a commitment not only from business owners, but from nonprofit organizations and thousands of community volunteers.

If not for the commitment of groups like Rotary Charities and the likes of Michael Moore and the Film Festival’s co-founders, downtown Traverse City would look quite different today.

We all should celebrate State Theatre’s 100th birthday and recognize it as the beacon that helped lead Traverse City into prosperity.

EDUCATION INITIATIVESEducation is at the forefront of our mission. Every year, the festival offers ten film school classes taught by world-renowned industry professionals at the affordable price of $5, and we begin each festival day with free daily panels featuring visiting filmmakers. We give over 30 students the summer work experience of a lifetime through our intership progam. We highlight the next generation of filmmakers at our student screenings, and run a Kids Fest dedicated to the filmgoers of the future. At the theaters, we bring in thousands of students, at our own expense, to experience the magic of the movies with films that expand media literacy and correlate to curriculum. And we love every minute of it!
