Creating a healthy, inclusive community

Acting on climate

Addressing climate change at the local level is crucial to solving the problem globally.

The Coalition continued to support energy-saving actions through “Take Charge Corvallis” –

the local initiative to compete for the $5 million Georgetown University Energy Prize.

Volunteers distributed 35,000 free LEDs to residents, held a series of information sessions

with rental property owners, and promoted heat pump water heaters.

Partnering with Environment Oregon and the Corvallis Environmental Center, we launched a

five-year campaign to increase the number of solar panels on Corvallis rooftops. Promotion

included distributing 1,000 door hangers and producing a “Harvest Sunshine” video.

Strengthening transportation options

Fostering a culture of cycling and transit ridership is key to creating a sustainable community.

The Coalition encouraged bicycling by providing bike valet services for hundreds of attendees

at Septembeerfest and Fall Festival, using bike racks volunteers transported by bike.

We sponsored Pedalpalooza, a festival featuring people-powered transportation, held in

conjunction with the 7th annual Car Free Day.

Our 2nd annual “Trip-by-Transit” guided riders of the Linn-Benton Loop bus to, from, and

around Albany. The day-long outing included visits to a local restaurant, the Farmers’ Market,

and Talking Water Gardens water reclamation system.

Fostering a secure local food system

A secure food system revolves around food that is locally produced, using practices that renew

and enrich the land and community.

As part of the “Eat 40% Local” campaign, our new “Simply Seasonal” recipes address the

need for affordable meals made from local, seasonal ingredients. More than 1,000 recipe

cards were distributed at the Farmers’ Market, and 2,000 people received recipes weekly via

social media. Our 7th annual Local Eats Week featured local ingredients at 13 restaurants.

The Coalition once again led a local event on National Food Day that featured a community

Apple Crunch and distribution of free Farmers’ Market tokens to 100 children.

The 7th edition of our Corvallis Garden Resource Guide was distributed to more than 500

current and prospective gardeners, and we sponsored three Edible Garden Tours.

Our new Resilience Project featured a display at the library about food preservation/storage

and other preparedness actions, and we constructed 30 new Neighborhood Planting Kiosks

that are being posted along residential sidewalks and in parks and community gardens.

A key element of a sustainable community is the physical, mental, and social well-being

of its residents.

The Coalition launched a Green Cleaning campaign to encourage people to choose safe

alternatives to hazardous household products. Promotion included a presentation by the

Oregon Environmental Council; distribution of 200 Green Cleaning Kits; and a survey of

schools, day care centers, and other facilities to assess cleaning policies and practices.

Our volunteers connected with social justice organizations to encourage their participation

in City processes such as Imagine Corvallis 2040, and with City officials to address the need

for more inclusive representation on City boards and commissions.

Encouraging waste prevention

Protecting natural resources

Our personal well-being and the livability of our societies depend on a life-support system that is

healthy and thriving.

In collaboration with OSU College of Engineering, we discovered that artificial turf on athletic

fields drain toxic substances into our local creeks. We consulted with the City of Corvallis

about developing requirements for stormwater treatment.

We discovered and mapped the historic drainage patterns of Corvallis and initiated the first

project to regenerate a lost creek – the headwaters of Dunawi Creek.

The Coalition collaborated with the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde and the City of

Corvallis to sponsor the Lamprey Creek Awakening ceremony in honor of the naming of

Lamprey Creek. To help protect the lamprey, we organized a series of creekside work parties

and plantings with volunteers from Corvallis Waldorf School and the Sierra Club.

The Coalition coordinated the 7th Annual Natural Areas Celebration Week, engaging 650

community members in appreciation of our natural areas through 23 separate events.

Promoting economic vitality

A hallmark of a sustainable community is a diverse, vibrant economy that meets people’s needs

and is anchored by a broad spectrum of locally owned, environmentally friendly businesses.

The Coalition sponsored two Northwest Earth Institute discussion courses, “Sustainability

Works: Rethinking Business as Usual”.

We partnered with Visit Corvallis to promote Travel Oregon’s Bike Friendly Business

Program to Corvallis businesses.

The Coalition and CIBA co-sponsored the 6th Annual Buy Local First Day & Holiday Contest.

We initiated a “Saving Green” project to assist businesses in adopting energy efficiency,

water efficiency, and waste reduction practices.

Our goal is zero waste. Nature’s time-tested patterns and life cycles have shown us that

waste-free systems are possible.

We organized a campaign to expand the number of Recycling Block Captains, which

resulted in a 50% increase. There are currently 90 Captains who distribute waste

prevention handouts on a quarterly basis to nearly 4,000 households.

Coalition volunteers distributed 7,000 copies of the Corvallis Area ReUse Directory and

worked with OSU Computer Science students on developing an app for the Directory. We initiated a project to increase recycling and composting at multi-unit residences.

Celebrating community

Recognizing the sustainability accomplishments of our partner organizations and

action teams helps inspire further action.

The Coalition’s annual Sustainability Fair and Town Hall was attended by more

than 500 people. Our “Community Scrapbook” slide show highlighted the work

of our partners, and Town Hall keynoters James Reismiller and Cassandra

Robertson wowed the audience with their presentation, “Ideas and Inspiration

from Germany’s Culture of Sustainability”.

OUR VISION FOR THE COMMUNITY

Corvallis is a community in which the needs of the present are met without compromising the ability of future

generations to meet their own needs. It is a flourishing and thriving city with a vibrant economy that respects,

restores, and cares for the community of life.

OUR GUIDING OBJECTIVES

Our community will:

1. Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community’s contribution to fossil fuel dependence and to wasteful use of

scarce metals and minerals. Use renewable resources whenever possible.

2. Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community’s contribution to dependence upon persistent chemicals and

wasteful use of synthetic substances. Use biologically safe products whenever possible.

3. Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community’s contribution to encroachment upon nature (e.g., land, water,

wildlife, forests, soil, ecosystems). Protect natural ecosystems.

4. Support people’s capacity to meet their basic needs fairly and efficiently.

2016 DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS

We increased our efforts to develop a strong financial and volunteer

base for the organization in several ways:

Sponsored a retreat and phone conferences with a

development professional to support Steering Committee

members and action team leaders in developing relationships

with existing and potential funders.

Continued development of a Grant Writing Collective, through

which Coalition volunteers are developing grant writing skills.

Launched a campaign to increase the number of donors who

contribute to the Coalition on a monthly basis. We succeeded in

nearly tripling the number of monthly donors.

Installed a professional donor management system to more

efficiently record and acknowledge our funding sources.

Created a Development Dashboard to track our progress

toward annual fundraising goals.

Refined our volunteer management system to track volunteer

hours and assist in volunteer recruitment, retention, and

recognition.

Hired a part-time Administrative Assistant to support the

Facilitator in many of the day-to-day functions of the Coalition,

including fundraising and communications with volunteers.
