Introduction
This has been a truly memorable year at SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter. This
year a lot of activities were organized by the student chapter like seminars on
modern technologies like IoT and Virtual Reality, workshops on applications
of solar energy, optical and microwave communication, laser game and
technical quiz competition, etc. Most significant event was the 3-day National
Conference on Information, Photonics and Communication (IPC) 2017. There
were a lot of speakers, many papers were presented and there was a large
number of attendees. Innovation lab is also running successfully. Students are
doing a lot of research oriented projects by leveraging modern technology.
This year’s hardware model competition saw a lot of interesting projects.
Overall it was an enriching experience for all the members of SPIE BPPIMT
Student Chapter.

IPC Conference 2017
National Conference on Information, Photonics and Communication 2017
National conference is a signature event of the SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter. This year, the
national conference was named Conference on Information, Photonics and Communication
(IPC) 2017. It was a 3-day conference. A lot of academicians and industry people from across
India, were invited to give talks on relevant topics. Workshops on optics and microwave
communication was also organized. More than 30 papers were presented at the
conference. Later on, conference proceedings were published by the student chapter.
A core committee was formed which comprised of SPIE student members and faculty
members to organize the conference. They worked very hard to bring sponsorships, to
invite speakers, to invite researchers to submit papers, selecting venue, etc. A total
sponsorship of $1000 was raised for the event. Many students and academicians attended
the conference over the 3 days. The enthusiasm among students to opt for a career of
research in fields related to optics and photonics at the end of the 3 days, defined the
success of the conference.

Workshop on
“Art of Technical Paper Writing
and Plagiarism”
Workshop on "Art of Writing Technical Research Paper &
Publication Ethics"
A workshop on "Art of Writing Technical Research Paper & Publication Ethics" was
organized by SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter on 18th February 2017 to spread awareness
regarding the importance of research among students and to motivate them to write
research papers. It comprised of the following talks:
1) "How to write technical research paper" by Dr. Arijit Saha, Associate Professor,
Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, BPPIMT.
2) "Plagiarism - Its consequences and preventive measures" by Dr. Surajit Mandal,
Associate Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, BPPIMT.
3) "Value of Conference Proceedings and Important Resources for Writing Research
Paper" by Debdyut Hajra, President, SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter.

Seminar on IoT and
Virtual Reality
Seminar on “IoT and Virtual Reality”
A seminar on “IoT and Virtual Reality” was organized by the SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter
on 7th December 2016. Guest speakers were invited who enlightened the students on the
applications of IoT and virtual reality and taught them how they can develop such
applications on their own.
A large number of enthusiastic students and faculty members attended the seminar. About
150 students participated in the seminar.

Khet 2017
Khet 2017
Khet is a chess-like abstract strategy board game using lasers that was formerly known as
Deflection. Players take turns moving Egyptian themed pieces around the playing field,
firing their low-powered laser diode after each move. Most of the pieces are mirrored on
one or more sides, allowing the players to alter the path of the laser through the playing
field. When a piece is struck by a laser on a non-mirrored side, it is eliminated from the
game.
Like every year, SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter organized a two-day Khet competition, as a
part of technical fest in college, on 10th and 11th April 2017. The chapter has already made
the game popular and the interest of students is growing day by day. Many students
participated and they showed excellent skills at Khet. The winners were awarded by SPIE
BPPIMT Student Chapter.

Avigyan 2017
Avigyan 2017
Avigyan, the annual technical quiz competition held by SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter, was
organized on 11th March 2017.
This year more than 60 teams participated in the quiz competition. The quiz was held in
two rounds – written prelim round followed by final on-stage round. It was a very
competitive prelim. 6 teams qualified for the final round.
The finals consisted of 4 rounds, including one round dedicated to recent advancements in
the field of optics and photonics. All teams showed great quizzing skills in the finals.
Technical quizzes are important as they not only provide students a platform to showcase
their knowledge but also provides a learning experience.

Workshop on
“Application of Photovoltaic Cell”
Workshop on “Applications of Photovoltaic Cell”
A workshop on "Applications of Photovoltaic Cells" was organized by SPIE BPPIMT Student
Chapter on 26th April 2017.
The workshop dealt with the application of photovoltaic cells which mainly included solar
lighting system. The main speaker was Mr. Chandan Chakraborty, Technical Advisor,
Soltech Energies (P) Limited. Mr. Chakraborty explained & demonstrated about solar
lighting systems. There was a demonstration of appliances which includes solar multi LED
lantern, solar water heating system, solar battery etc. The workshop was attended by both
students and teachers.

Attending SPIE
Conference
Attending SPIE Optics + Photonics Conference 2017
This year Debdyut Hajra, president of SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter, represented the
chapter in SPIE Optics + Photonics conference, San Diego, California, USA. He attended
the leadership workshop by Jean-luc Dumont and several other workshops, group
discussions, professional development courses, etc. He also presented two of his research
works at the conference. The conference provided him with opportunities to connect with
other SPIE student chapters and professionals related to the field of Optics and Photonics.
After returning from the conference, he shared his experience and learnings with other
members of the SPIE student chapter. This infused students with new motivation to
pursue their career in the related fields and increased their bond with SPIE.

Hardware Prototype
Design Competition
Prototype Design and Coding Competition
This year SPIE BPPIMT Student Chapter organised the 2nd edition of this competition on
20th September 2017. It provides a platform for the students to apply their knowledge of
electronic circuit design and implementation. It also encourages them to nurture their
creativity and innovation on applied engineering concepts. The competition has become
very popular and this year we received good amount of participation.
In the coding competition, certain coding tasks based on embedded systems were given
to each group in every round. The level of difficulty was increased after every round.
Students were judged as per their problem solving skill, accuracy, approach to problem and
speed of completion. In the prototype design competition, we saw many interesting
projects starting from drones, smart traffic control system, virtual drums, engraver machine
and various other projects based on modern technological trends.
Students ae very excited about this event and are waiting to give their best in the next
edition of the event.
