    ANNUAL REPORT:FOREWORD

After a particularly challenging couple of years, I’m delighted with how the whole organisation has pulled together to position Sussex Oakleaf on a significantly improved financial basis. Costs have been tightly managed, the scale and quality of our existing services have been maintained, and areas of new business exploited.

Our goal at Sussex Oakleaf is to deliver the best of contemporary services for people experiencing or recovering from periods of mental ill-health.

With much improved financial stability and ongoing contractual security, the organisation is now well positioned to flourish.

I’m hugely proud of all our services but was particularly delighted to see how positively our Place of Calm pilot service was evaluated and subsequently re-commissioned. Suicide prevention services remain an all too prevalent necessity, and our provision is a key addition to the local support offering.

I’m also really pleased to see the resurgence of The Oakleaf Consumer Circle (OCC), the client led “voice” of our clients. Membership is growing fast to help us ensure that clients remain at the heart of all we do.

My heartfelt thanks go to all our clients, carers, staff and volunteers that make Sussex Oakleaf the invaluably supportive, caring and committed organisation that it is.

SUSSEX OAKLEAF:2015/162015/16 was a busy year for Sussex Oakleaf. Staff, volunteers and clients have been working hard to ensure that we continue to provide the best possible service to our clients.

OFFICE MOVESignificantly, in October of 2015, Sussex Oakleaf moved from it’s long term administrative base in Haywards Heath, to a shared office space within a community and voluntary building in Crawley. This move has driven both financial savings and a working environment conducive to partnership with organisations that share our values.

2015 CONFERENCEIn October 2015 we celebrated World Mental Health Day with a successful conference at the University of Sussex in Brighton. The highlight of the day was hearing the powerful and moving testimonies from clients who have been supported by Sussex Oakleaf. Their stories provided a powerful reminder of why our services are so vital, and why they are held in such high regard.

CLIENT ENGAGEMENT STRATEGYA client engagement strategy was adopted by Sussex Oakleaf in November 2015 which clearly articulates our stance on co-production, parity of esteem, and our approach going forward. The Oakleaf Consumer Circle (OCC), who are the client led ‘voice’ of our clients, has been reinvigorated with new members and additional management resources.

WEST SUSSEX ALLIANCESussex Oakleaf is committed to signing to the West Sussex Alliance, a group of mental health services in the area who are involved in the redesign of Tier Two mental health services. The redesign will see a greater use of services like the ones offered by Sussex Oakleaf and will provide a clearer link between services for clients in West Sussex.

HOUSING PILOTSussex Oakleaf was involved in a successful month long pilot, at Langley Green Hospital in Crawley, to assess patient’s housing needs and, where appropriate, to provide direct housing support. The pilot was run in partnership with West Sussex County Council. Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust is

evaluating the pilot and are currently exploring the viability of further funding for this type of housing support.

GROVELANDS FUNDRAISING PARTNERSHIPRecent months have seen us create our first ever fundraising partnership with a private sector organisation. Grovelands, a financial recruitment consultancy from Brighton, selected Sussex Oakleaf after a ballot from their staff. They have already generously donated more than £1,000 and plan to raise more for us on a regular basis. As well as fundraising, Grovelands also offer their staff one day of paid volunteering each year which they are being encouraged to use at Sussex Oakleaf.

NEW LOOK SUSSEX OAKLEAF During the last year we have been busy updating the Sussex Oakleaf brand. A new organisational colour scheme and the introduction of a new ‘Oak tree’ logo have helped bring the brand up to date. A local film maker volunteered his time to create a new promotional video for Sussex Oakleaf. The video sees clients, volunteers and staff speaking passionately about the value of our services and the importance of everyone looking after their mental health. The video can be found on our website as well as through our social media channels.

STAFFINGWe believe that coming to work should be a rewarding experience for our staff and volunteers. A content and committed workforce ensures our continued positive impact on client’s health and wellbeing. We are committed to ensuring that our staff remuneration levels are competitive and we are proud to be compliant with the Living Wage Foundation. A new internal training programme was rolled out across the organisation in September 2015 which will ensure that staff are able to enhance their skills. We continue to promote personal development for all staff and volunteers.

STAFF AND VOLUNTEER WELLBEING2015 saw Sussex Oakleaf offering a comprehensive survey to its staff members. Out of the survey was born the planning of an annual Staff and Volunteer Wellbeing Day which will offer staff and volunteers the opportunity to come together in a relaxed environment

and take part in a range of activities based around the theme of wellbeing.

STAFF TRAININGWe now have four internal mandatory training courses comprising of:

Introduction to Sussex OakleafMental Health Awareness, Recovery and CompassionProfessionalism, Self-Awareness & EqualitiesRisk Assessment & Lone Working

Alongside these are a further 10 courses that staff may need to attend, depending on their role. These range from ‘First Aid’ to ‘Deprivation of Liberty’. We now have a team of eight staff who have all completed the Institute of Leadership and Management accredited ‘Train the Trainer’ course. As well as delivering the four above mandatory training courses, this core group will assume the role of ‘Champion’ for one of eight specialism’s ranging from Autism/Aspergers to Children and Young Peoples Mental Health.

OUR SERVICES:A BRIEF GUIDEWEST SUSSEX COMMUNITY WELLBEING SERVICEThe West Sussex Community Wellbeing Service offers both one to one and group support to individuals experiencing difficulties with their mental health and wellbeing. The service has supported close to 500 individuals over the past year, with two thirds receiving one to one support from our Recovery Workers and Peer Mentors. The Crawley and Mid Sussex based service continues to create links with the local community in order to provide a more comprehensive package of support to clients.

We have been heavily involved in discussions around the upcoming West Sussex Tier 2 redesign which will help to ensure that client support is joined up and designed to meet their wider health and social care needs.

The last year has seen clients, volunteers and staff make far more use of Sussex Recovery College. Staff from Sussex Oakleaf have co-produced and delivered a number of courses through the college with our popular ‘Coping with Anxiety’ course receiving excellent feedback.

2015/16 saw the employment of a new Recovery Worker tasked with specifically creating and running a service aimed at clients aged 18 - 25. The young person’s service, named Quercus, has been providing one to one support to individuals as well as developing groups aimed at reducing social isolation and developing informal peer support networks for the clients involved.

We also saw an expansion in Sussex Oakleaf’s Peer Mentoring offering with more than twenty individuals achieving a pass on our accredited Peer Mentor course. We have seen an increase in the number of individuals utilising their new qualification by becoming a Peer Mentor within the organisation. Course accreditors, Laser, continue to be impressed with the high standard of work being completed by our learners and there are currently discussions being held around increasing the qualification on offer from Level 2 to Level 3.

EAST SUSSEX COMMUNITY WELLBEING SERVICEIn March of 2016 we were delighted to announce that current funding levels for our East Sussex Community Wellbeing Services were confirmed for the whole of 2016/17. Our Commissioner stated that this funding was only secured due to the very high esteem that our services are held, and the demonstrable benefits they provide. This is real testament to clients, staff, and volunteers who provide and contribute to such valued services on a daily basis.

The last year has seen an increase in the number of volunteers contributing to the work that the East Sussex Service does. Nine volunteers provided nearly 1,300 hours of work during 2015/16 and the service also saw the recruitment of its first Volunteer Peer Mentor.

The service welcomed visits from MPs Caroline Ansell and Nus Ghani as well as the Mayor of Eastbourne, who attended a very busy and well attended Christmas dinner.

The East Sussex Community Wellbeing Service was chosen by Waitrose to be the recipient of their community funding, with the funds raised being used directly on the clients.

East Sussex clients were also successful in exhibiting some of their art work at the Towner Gallery in Eastbourne. The ‘Outside In’ exhibition provided a space for individuals who struggle to access the art world and enables them to develop opportunities in ways that are tailored to their individual needs.

PLACE OF CALMA brand new service for Sussex Oakleaf. The Place of Calm service was started as a one year pilot project and was tasked with providing a calm place for individuals in need of suicide prevention support and risk management. The pilot is being run in partnership with Recovery Partners in Eastbourne. We are very pleased to announce that the Place of Calm pilot has been extended until the end of 2016.

LIGHTHOUSE RECOVERY SERVICEThe Lighthouse Recovery Service has continued to provide support to individuals with a personality disorder in a unique partnership between Sussex Oakleaf, MIND and Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust.

During the past year Lighthouse ran a successful fundraising and awareness day at their local Tesco branch which helped them to secure ‘Charity of the Year’ status. This means they will continue to receive fundraising support and donations from Tesco throughout the year.

Luciana Berger, Shadow Minister for Mental Health, visited the Lighthouse and spoke with staff and members about the value of the service they provide to the community and the challenges people face in accessing mental health services in the area. She listened a great deal to how improvements to government policy could make real improvements in people’s lives.

Staff at Lighthouse also organised a successful trip to Berlin where they made links with a similar service and were able to share ideas about good working practice.

RESIDENTIAL CAREOur residential care services continue to offer accommodation and 24 hour support to individuals from diverse backgrounds living with enduring mental health conditions, who may also have other additional support needs. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). These services provide clients with confidence, skills, and choices to enable them to work towards becoming as self-reliant and independent as possible, to promote fulfilment and an enhanced quality of life. The nature of the support is very much community focused, with peer support and co-production being key components, alongside appropriate positive risk taking, which is viewed as an essential part of learning and recovery.

The recovery focused plans used help us to work with clients to identify and meet their needs, wishes and choices. We recognise each person’s uniqueness, promote recovery and empowerment, build on strengths and encourage self-management.

‘SUSSEX OAKLEAF HAS HELPED GIVE ME A PURPOSE TO GET UP, WASHED AND DRESSED. THE GROUPS ON OFFER HAVEHELPED ME TO RECONNECT WITH MY SKILLS AS WELL AS MY COMMUNITY.’ROSE - CLIENT

TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATIONSussex Oakleaf continues to provide temporary accommodation services in Mid Sussex to adults with a vulnerability, that are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless. All clients are referred to us directly from the Mid Sussex District Council Housing Needs Team and placements are short term. The service aims to enable clients to gain confidence, engage with relevant support agencies, comply with statutory orders and develop the skills to move on and manage their own homes. Staff will discuss tenancy management needs on an individual basis and, based on this discussion, staff and clients will work together to write and agree an action plan. We link in with external support providers to ensure additional support needs, where identified, are met.

CLIENT STORY‘I began support at Sussex Oakleaf in September 2015. I was signposted to MIND advocates and they have supported me with housing meetings and other appointments.

I feel by coming to Sussex Oakleaf I have regained my confidence by getting out again in the community. I have started voluntary work (Gatwick Detainees) I really enjoy it and I feel it’s my way of giving back to the community.

I am doing Aspire courses in Food and Mood and Building Confidence. I am also starting a Recovery College course in Resilience skills for wellbeing. I feel these are helping me to meeting new people and trusting people too.

I have managed to cut down on my anti depressant which has pleased me. I have also stopped drinking alcohol. My diet has very much improved. I have a new hobby which is going to the library to use the computers daily, which is another area I’ve gained confidence in.

As a result of support, voluntary work and courses I feel people are not judging me and I’m more independent again.

    I was discharged January 2016.’

CLIENT ENGAGEMENT:THE HEART OF OAKLEAFOAKLEAF CONSUMER CIRCLEFormed in 2009, the Oakleaf Consumer Circle (OCC) is a group of current and former clients of Sussex Oakleaf who all have lived experience of mental health issues. The OCC works as a team and in partnership with Sussex Oakleaf on issues that affect clients and the organisation. The OCC gather clients’ views and opinions to ensure that the client perspective is incorporated in everything we do. The OCC are in close contact with the Board and management team of Sussex Oakleaf, acting as a ‘critical friend’, giving advice and making recommendations to improve services. The OCC are committed to having a representative at every Board meeting and were part of the consultation process for our new Client Engagement Strategy.

Following a year of change for the whole organisation in 2014/15, the OCC is now going from strength to strength. Over the last year members of the OCC have visited many of our services, meeting clients and feeding their experiences back to the Board. The OCC presented to staff, volunteers and clients at the 2015 Sussex Oakleaf conference.

The OCC are currently putting together a survey for Sussex Oakleaf clients so that we can continue to make improvements to our services wherever possible. They are also in the process of completing a Good Practice Charter (GPC) at one of our residential services. The GPC is a monitoring and evaluation tool that was developed by the OCC to improve services for the benefit of clients.

FOCUS ON OAKLEAFFocus on Oakleaf is our very own quarterly magazine. It features articles, artwork and poetry from Sussex Oakleaf clients as well as news and information about services. The last year saw clients writing personal and touching pieces for inclusion in the magazine and we have seen the magazine distributed widely across Sussex.

PROJECT VOLUNTEERWe really value our volunteers at Sussex Oakleaf. We have around 100 registered volunteers and 50 currently active volunteers that work across our services. Our volunteers provided almost 5000 volunteering hours during 2015/16. We understand that people volunteer for a variety of reasons and we aim to make their volunteering experience as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.

We pledge to offer our volunteers regular supervision, and training and development opportunities. A volunteer survey is being planned later in 2016 to enable volunteers the opportunity to provide us with some feedback on their experience so that we can continue to make improvements. All active volunteers have been invited to attend our Staff and Volunteer Wellbeing Day in April 2016 and will receive a certificate of recognition.

CLIENT STORY‘Since I started Lighthouse about two months ago I have noticed a marked improvement in several aspects of my life.

In the 10 months before I started I was calling on average two ambulances a week and often visited the A and E department at hospital with severe health anxiety. Also, before I started at Lighthouse, I was practically housebound and would rarely leave the house alone.

Now that I have somewhere to go, I feel I have some purpose to my life again and have been travelling there in public transport alone which is a big step forward for me.

Although I still suffer with the health anxiety, I have been able to better manage the intensity of it so that it hasn’t overwhelmed me as often it did. I have now been able to cut down to about two ambulances a month with occasional hospital visits.

The Lighthouse has made the difference between merely existing and living with meaning.’

CLIENT STORY‘I moved into my home in August 2013 after spending 8 years in hospital. I found this quite hard at first, as I was used to having everything done for me, to now having to make my own decisions. Since moving in I am now volunteering 2 days a week at the British heart foundation. I do the cleaning, which I enjoy. I am also able to have a takeaway which I never had before. I have staff support to help planning and buying all my own food for the week which I had never done before.’

The site will provide a cleaner and more user friendly source of information for anybody wanting to find out more about Sussex Oakleaf and the services we provide. It will incorporate our newly revamped organisational colour scheme and will serve as an online gateway to Sussex Oakleaf.

DONATIONS & PARTNERSHIPSAlongside our new website we are creating a web page with Virgin Money Giving. The page will allow people to donate and fundraise for Sussex Oakleaf. We will also be continuing to seek new partner organisations that can not only donate money but also offer their time and expertise to help to further Sussex Oakleaf’s growth.

SURVEYSDuring May and June of 2016 Sussex Oakleaf will be rolling out surveys to all Staff, Volunteers, Clients and Stakeholders. The results of these surveys will allow us to respond to the needs of the people who use, work for, and commission our services.

FRIENDS OF OAKLEAFFriends of Oakleaf is a new email newsletter being delivered to clients, volunteers and interested parties. We will be working over the coming year to continue to grow and develop the mailing list so that we can keep as many people as possible up to date with all things Sussex Oakleaf.

EVENTSOur next annual conference is already being planned for October 2016. The conference will be timed to coincide with World Mental Health Day and is being held at The Martlets Hall in Burgess Hill. Our newly developed Staff and Volunteer Wellbeing Day is set to be an annual event and will continue to provide staff and volunteers with a day of relaxation and team building. All of our services will continue to arrange local events with Artist Open Houses, Christmas Lunches and Mental Health Awareness events all in the pipeline throughout the year.

AND FINALLY:SPECIAL THANKS TO...We would just like to end this year’s annual report by offering a special thank you to everyone who has made the last year such a success.

To all the staff whose hard work and dedication has helped to realise the hopes and ambitions for numerous clients, whose passion for and belief in mental health recovery make our service goals a reality.

To all of the volunteers who give up their free time to help and support Sussex Oakleaf. Whether you’re behind the scenes providing administrative support or working directly with our clients, the support you give is truly invaluable.

To all of our partner organisations and stakeholders, whether you are helping to raise funds or you are working directly alongside us to provide services your tireless work is greatly appreciated.

And finally to all of the clients that we support on a daily basis. Your tales of recovery continue to serve an inspiration and a heartfelt reminder of why mental health services are so valuable to our communities.

    Thank you!
