For excellence
Gerd Albers
Van Embden
Routledge
It is necessary to change the rules for the ISOCARP Awards for Excellence, for the following reasons: • They have a too elevated accession fee, it makes this competition accessible just to big planning companies or rich public administrations, many interesting project cannot access the competition (especially small and medium size cities). • They currently rules exclude a number of creative initiatives (often bottom up driven and with not many financial resources available) that often make innovation (e.g. temporary used based regeneration projects, other participatory planning based initiatives and so on) in planning, but have problems to emerge at level of our global network • The planning quality of the big companies that can pay our fee is not always in line with what our community intend for “good quality in planning” • With current rules we have, always in this time of crisis, less and less applicants, we cannot risk next year to get into the condition of “zero applicants”, or applicants coming from a restricted circle of “usual suspects”.
