The greater part of our learning in the schools has been a waste because for most of our teachers, their subjects are like dead specimens of once living things, with which they have a learned acquaintance, but no communication of life and love.

The Department of Education, University of Delhi, earlier known as the Central Institute of Education (CIE), was, perhaps, the first major institute of professional learning and research in Education, established just after independence. The first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and, then, Education Minister, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, took considerable interest in the establishment of CIE in 1947 and its activities and progress in those early years. Maulana Azad visualized the function of CIE not merely to “turn out teachers who will be „model teachers‟”, but to evolve into “a research centre for solving new educational problems of the country”. Over these past decades, CIE has attempted to work towards this vision. Moreover, at this juncture, when the nation has introduced the Right to Education Act and a National Curricular Framework for Teacher Education, and is grappling with how it will prepare a vast cadre of teachers who can ensure quality with equity, CIE will need to brace itself to address this challenge.

Recognised as an Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE) and having established the Maulana Azad Centre for Elementary and Social Education (MACESE), the Faculty of Education has developed several academic programmes.

Address by the Head of the Department

I extend a very warm welcome to the Chief Guest of the 67th Foundation Day of CIE, to all the

dignitaries who have accepted our invitation to be here with us today, and to all my colleagues and students.

We are very privileged to have with us our distinguished speaker, Shri Anupam Mishra, a well known Gandhian and Chairperson of the Gandhi Peace Foundation. Anupam Mishra has travelled widely in rural India to understand the nature and causes of the water crisis. He has used the indigenous knowledge that he acquired, through his extensive travels, to suggest a solution to this problem by preservation, conversation, maintenance and management. He has helped groups in Rajasthan in the regeneration of ponds, through the technique of rain water harvesting.

His extensive field research on traditional ponds and water management resulted in the publication of a widely acclaimed book, Aaj Bhi Khare Hai Talaab, in 1993. His second book, Rajasthan ki Rajat Bunde, is a compilation of water-harvesting and management systems in Western Rajasthan.

He is the recipient of many prestigious awards for his path breaking work, including Jamnalal Bajaj Puruskar, in 2011.

Today, however, he is going to share his experiences of two unusual schools. It would be of great interest to all of us to understand the issues of knowledge, language and water, as a natural resource and their linkages with the discourse on education.

Welcoming once again today‟s chief guest, on this day, I pay my regards to each and every founding stone of CIE, congratulate each and every building stone of CIE, who gave the current shape to CIE and extend my best wishes to all the shining stars, who are sitting here and who will create the golden pages of CIE‟s tomorrow.

Before I conclude, on behalf of the CIE family, I would like to pay tribute to our dear colleague Prof. R. P. Sharma, who we lost this year.

The Faculty offers the following academic programmes

A full-time professional programme of four years, after 12 years of schooling, in elementary teacher education, leading to a Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) degree. This programme is offered in eight affiliated colleges of the University of Delhi.

A full-time professional teacher education programme of the duration of one academic year, after graduate or post-graduate studies, leading to a degree in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.). Besides CIE, this prgramme is also offered at three affiliated colleges – Maharshi Valmiki College of Education, Lady Irwin College and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College.


A full-time professional teacher education programme, of the duration of one academic year, leading to a Bachelor of Special Education (Visual Impairment) degree. This course is offered in Durgabai Deshmukh College.

A full-time professional teacher education programme, of the duration of one academic year, leading to a Bachelor of Special Education (Mental Retardation) degree. This course is offered in Lady Irwin College.

A full-time advanced programme in Education, of the duration of one academic year, leading to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree.

A part-time advanced programme in Education, of the duration of two academic years, leading to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree. This programme is designed for in-service teachers and other educational practitioners.

A full-time pre-doctoral research programme of eighteen months and a part-time programme of twenty four months for working professionals in Education leading to the degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)

A doctoral research programme, leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

A Post-Graduate Diploma in Special Education (Multiple Disabilities: Physical and Neurological) of the duration of one academic year with three months internship, is run by the Action for Ability Development and Inclusion (AADI).

Academic Programmes

Bachelor of Education The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) is rated as one of the best programmes of its kind in the country. It is perceived as, essentially, the first formal preparation for educators, although its primary focus is on secondary school teaching. It is also seen as an initial professional degree for those who may wish to pursue further studies and professional specializations in educational management, policy making and planning, curriculum development including textbook design, guidance and counselling, working in alternative school systems, teacher education and educational research.

The B.Ed. programme in CIE is characterised by an intensive school experience programme (SEP), a technology awareness programme, many co-curricular activities including sports, community service and work experience which contribute towards the development of a more holistic teacher. It has some subject based academic bodies, including the Civics Society, the History Society, the SOCRATES etc. for nurturing the talents of the students. B.Ed. is offered in three other colleges of the University of Delhi in addition to the CIE, namely Maharishi College of Education, Lady Irwin College and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College. An effort is made to facilitate inter institutional collaboration and coordination on all important decisions concerning this programme. Currently, the B.Ed. Coordinators at CIE are Dr. Jayshree Mathur and Dr. Alka Behari.

Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) Programme Offered in select colleges of the University of Delhi since the last two decades, the Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) programme has earned the reputation of being an exemplar programme of integrated teacher education. A comprehensive participatory review of the programme undertaken last year, furthered the cause of the previous two reviews of 1996 and 1998. These reviews had led to put in place structural measures for course transaction across colleges through regular faculty development programmes, robust frameworks for the practicum courses, the school internship programme and the assessment basis and criteria for the annual evaluation of student-teachers with the aim to sustain the vision of the programme across a diverse set of institutions. This year, Departments of Elementary Education of two colleges of the University of Delhi, namely, Gargi College and the Institute of Home Economics took the lead to organise the Fifth International Conference on the theme Education, Politics and Social Change in collaboration with


the Comparative Education society of India. Over 150 scholars participated from within and outside the country. All eight B.El.Ed. colleges worked for the Conference and Dr. Manisha Wadhwa, the current Co-coordinator of the B.El.Ed. programme, undertook several responsibilities. Three B.El.Ed. faculty members have been selected for as the CESI Executive Committee, 2014-2016. Currently, the B.El.Ed. Coordinator at CIE is Prof. Poonam Batra.

Bachelor of Education (Special Education)

Lady Irwin College In Lady Irwin College, the period between January 2014-November 2014, at its Education Department, has seen many interesting, scholarly and academically enriching events. A special lecture on the Indian Philosophy and Frontiers of Modern Science and a workshop were organised on The Cyber Crime, a sensitization program for pre-service teacher. A special lecture on Neural Connections between Students and Teachers and a Panel Discussion were conducted, on promoting the well being of young people in India: Issues and Strategies. A song and dance competition and a field trip to the National craft museum were also organised. Four workshops were conducted simultaneously on Warli, Madhubani painting, pot making and block printing. Each student participated in two workshops and made articles. A special lecture was undertaken on Teaching Phonetics by Ms. Vandana Sehgal, from the JD Tytler Learning Centre. An Extempore was also held. Keeping with the spirit of the Science Week celebrations, science skits, on various topics, were organised by the students. A talent sharing event was organised in the Department of Education, wherein many social issues were discussed, through a skit. A Stress Management Workshop was conducted. A calligraphy workshop was undertaken by Mr. Arvind, from the Delhi School of Art. An interactive session on B.Ed. education by Ms. Bhavi, an ex-student and a personal grooming workshop by Mrs. Ashmeen Munjal, to guide our students about saree draping and hair styling, in order that that they could manage their attires confidently, on their own, during practice teaching, were conducted. For the Diwali Mela, students made items to sell, put up food, games and mehendi stalls. A Texture Workshop was held by our own students, who specialised in textiles (FAS). The Ekta Diwas was also celebrated for the very first time on campus and contained a series of events such as a speech, skit, panel discussion, slogan and poster making.

The Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education (Visual Impairment) The Board of Trustees of the Blind Relief Association had established the Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education (Visual Impairment) since the academic year 2006-2007. With the implementation of 27% OBC seats, as per the directives of the University of Delhi, the present capacity is 33. Prof. Nargis Panchpakesan continued to be the chairperson of the college Governing Body till August 2014. Shri Ranjit Puri took over as the new chairperson of the Governing Body in September 2014.

The College organized a 5-day In-service Teacher Training programme sponsored by the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, Dehradun on Teaching Inclusive Classroom. The teacher trainees offered volunteer service in Tech Share, organized by the Barrier Break, at India Habitat Centre. The college and the Blind Relief Association jointly organized an interactive session with special students of Edinburgh University, Scotland; Kings College, London and EOC (University of Delhi) as a part of the Connect to India programme on Disability and Inclusion: Perceptions & Issues in Contemporary India. The teacher trainees of the college enacted a drama titled Goli Le Lo on the occasion of the 71

st Annual Day of the association. The students of the 2013-14 session

of the College went for an Educational Tour Programme to Varanasi, U.P and visited various institutions for the visually impaired and other disabilities and visited Sarnath. The students visited the regional centres of the National Institute of the Mentally Handicapped, National Institute of the Hearing Handicapped and, the Multi-handicapped Unit and Deaf Blind Unit of the NAB.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) The Master of Education (M.Ed.) programme is a significant step in the preparation of Educational Researchers, Educational Administrators and Teacher Educators. CIE has a full-time programme of one-year duration and a part-time programme of two years. The part-time programme serves as a gateway for practitioners such as school teachers, school administrators and NGO personnel to pursue professional development. The M.Ed. scholars, apart from receiving a rich grounding in


Educational Theory, are encouraged to take up Dissertation work in diverse areas which include Foundations of Education, Special Education, Mental Health Education, Educational Administration, Science and Social Science Education, Teacher Education, Educational Technology and Curricular and Pedagogic issues. The M.Ed. Scholars are also being trained for tutorship and school supervision. To develop their research acumen and potential, regular in-house Research Seminars are conducted. Currently, the M.Ed. Joint Coordinators at CIE are Dr. Manju Agarwal and Ms. Kanchan.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) The M.Phil. in education is a pre-doctoral level programme, designed to provide the scholars an in-depth understanding of educational research and to build conceptual foundations in specific areas of advanced studies in education. CIE offers both, a full-time and a part-time programme, for the Master of Philosophy (Education) degree.

This year, the programme achieved a significant academic milestone with the review and revision of all the courses offered. Some new courses in emerging areas of research have also seen introduced. The programme committee continues to work towards strengthening the research experiences of the scholars. Currently, the M.Phil. Coordinator at CIE is Dr. T. Geetha.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) The Department offers a Doctoral programme in Education. This programme aims at developing an understanding of research, public policy and educational practice, and the relationships among them. It begins with a study of specific courses, followed by rigorous research, leading to a dissertation.


The course work gives students the opportunity to study individualized courses that are tailored to suit their research interests. These could be a combination of courses designed within the Department of Education and those chosen from courses across disciplines offered by other departments of the University of Delhi, including courses on qualitative and quantitative research methods. The doctoral program is based on the premise that rigorous research will help develop a cadre of professionals who can develop specialized knowledge in areas of educational practice and public policy. The areas of active engagement and research are as diverse as special education, language education, science education, comparative education, curriculum studies, policy analysis, gender studies, mental health, cognition, inclusive education etc. Besides this, the scholars are actively contributing to the academic and corporate life of the institution. Currently the Ph.D. coordinator at CIE is Prof. Namita Ranganathan.

Research Colloquium/ Special Lecture / Seminar

The Research Colloquium in the Department organizes interactive presentations of research scholars and lectures by Invited Guest Speakers every Wednesday. It has emerged as an active forum for sharing varied research concerns in education and engaging in contemporary debates and critical thinking. Active participation by the M.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D. scholars and Faculty members has made it a vibrant forum of 'a thinking community of researchers, acknowledging multiple perspectives and experiences‟. The Colloquium provides opportunities to get an insight from different fields, both in terms of diverse issues, public and social policy and research methods. Students’ Panchayat

The Students‟ Panchayat is an integral component of the B.Ed programme of CIE. This year too an Orientation Programme was organized for the students to familiarize them with the functioning of the Department. Currently the Students‟ Panchayat Conveners at CIE are Ms. Seema Sarohe and Mr. B. S. Rawat.

Students‟ Panchayat held several activities this year. Some of the prominent activities held by Students‟ Panchayat are:

Panchayat activities of the year opened with enthralling performances by the houses on July 25, 2014. Each house (Aurobindo, Gandhi, Ramabai,Sarojini, and Tagore) put up a mesmeric group dance, a melodic group song and a gripping short skit . This facilitated the smooth induction of B.Ed and M.Ed. students to CIE.

A theme was designated for each month of the academic session and related activities were organised to realise the theme's essence.

In-house discussions and debates were organised on the theme Freedom in the month of August. This was followed by election of in-house captain and two vice-captains, and inviting nominations for students' representation in the Panchayat. Election to the Students' Panchayat positions- President, Cultural Secretary, Literary Secretary, Sports Secretary and Treasurer was organized successfully on September 12, 2014 following all the procedures of a democratic and transparent election system. The installation of the Students' Panchayat was solemnized on September 26, 2014 with the oath taking ceremony by the elected members and an inspirational talk on 'Panchayati Raj in India' by the Chief Guest, Dr. Girish Kumar (Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Public Administration).

The month of October observed the theme 'Health issues in Education' through high-energy inter-house volleyball tournaments and an informative talk by Prof. Ritu Priya Mehrotra on 'Health and Education, an Indian Health Systems Perspective'.

The theme 'Diversity and Inclusion' was explored by screening a film on ' Jyotiba Phule‟ followed by a thought-provoking discussion session. Jhootan- a play by 'Lok Shikshak Manch' based on the autobiography of Om Prakash Valmiki was also staged in the month of November. Also, an Inter-house Bulletin-board competition on the theme 'Children and their world' was held in the same month. It attempted to demystify the world of children with some critical reflections using the visual medium.

Activities slated for the coming months include preparation and celebration of Foundation Day in December 2014, Literature festival in January 2015, a talk and film screening on the theme


'Gender and Society' in February 2015, and a talk/film screening on the theme 'Our Rights' in March 2015.

School Experience Programme (SEP) The SEP programme provides a 40 day field experience with life in a school. This year, the Department engaged with 50 schools. Students and scholars were oriented comprehensively towards developing a praxis which is inclusive and child centred and geared towards addressing some of the challenges in strengthening the Right to Education Act. The SEP remains one of our linkages with the schools, drawn mostly from the Directorate of Education of the Government of Delhi and the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, along with a few private organisations. Currently, the Joint Conveners of SEP at CIE are Ms. Ritu and Mr. Ashish Ranjan.

An Association of Human Rights Activists and Volunteers (AAHRAV) AAHRAV organized an awareness program spread in different days to make learners aware and familiarize them about Human Rights and associated issues, concerns and challenges. Special focus was given on pedagogical practices based on a human rights perspective. The basic theme of the workshop was to know, what to know and how to know. Previously planned activities were conducted. Some of the activities were:

Are we all different or something is common

Where are the problems and possibilities?

Rethinking about Human Rights? An awareness programme with B.Ed. students included participation in activities and different presentations based on theoretical and field based experiences. Learners participated in the programme with full zeal and enthusiasm. Currently, the AAHRAV In-charge at CIE is Dr. Sandeep Kumar. Notice boards were displayed on the eve of the Human Rights Day, 10

th December, which covered

a range of various concerns, issues and challenges faced across the world.

Civics Society The Civics Society is one of the most vibrant societies in CIE, comprising of Political Science A and B students. This society organizes various events every year, some of which are open to all the students of CIE, irrespective of their subject, while some others are largely for Civics students.

The events organized this year include: a Panel Discussion on The Relevance of Article 370 on 8th

February 2014 and a Debate- on „Live-in Relationship: Should it not be banned in India?‟ was held on 15

th September, 2014. A UN Day- A Wall Debate on the United Nation‟s Role in peace

promotion: „Success‟ or „failure‟ was organized on 24rd

October, 2014. Other activities to be organised later include a visit to Parliament, a Confluence, and a Film Screening. Currently, the Civics Society In-charge at CIE is Dr. Pankaj Arora.

Technology Awareness Program for Students (TAPS)

Technology Awareness Program for Student (TAPS) intends to develop the prospective teachers to acquire computer related skills which will enable them to be computer literate and understand the critical issues surrounding the use of Information Communication Technologies in the field of Education. The important objective of the program is to enable the professional development of prospective teachers to critically discern internet and multimedia materials for their use in Education as an agent of change in the classroom and address systemic issues such as reach, equity and quality. This year, TAPS has been strengthened with the installation of new computers, LCD projectors and the extension of the computer lab, to meet the increased demand of blending ICT in education. Currently, the TAPS In-charge at CIE is Dr. M. Rajendran.

Visual Education

Visual Education is an important practicum course of the B.Ed. programme, in which students are engaged in developing appropriate teaching learning materials, related to their course, along with an aesthetic sense. They learn various skills involved in the presentation of material on charts and boards such as, drawing, writing in bold letters, colour combinations and other intricacies related to it. Students, based on this learning, pick up certain topics or themes from the syllabus and develop material, which enhances the understanding and grasp of topic. Thus, there is integration of visuals with text. In addition, students work on issues of collective significance and importance such as dengue, pollution, cleanliness, significant days and events. For this, they make interactive bulletin boards during their School Experience Programme (SEP) in schools and the Department. Using text and visual media to effectively communicate ideas, on different themes, is what they practice and learn by developing bulletin boards. Students also learn to identify appropriate audio-visual material to present historical and literary images related to their school subjects, during SEP. Thus, Visual education develops a student's ability to comprehend, make meaning of, and communicate through visual means and media, usually in the form of images. Currently, the Visual Education In-charge at CIE is Ms. Dipi Pathak.

Work Experience

Work Experience is an integral part of the B.Ed. course. This component focuses on the honing of senses, inculcation of value for dignity of labour and nurturance of aesthetics leading to the personality development of the prospective teachers. The strands which weave the fabric of this component this year are gardening, music, and theatre in education, photography, painting, tie and dye, clay modelling and electrical gadgets. It helps the individual to manifest his/her inner potential and achieve self realization, objective which humanity has held in high esteem. Currently, Work Experience In-charge at CIE is Dr. Sushmita Lakhyani.






CIE Placement Cell

CIE offers facility for placement of both its in-service and pre-service students, through a dedicated placement cell. CIE takes pride in the fact that its alumni hold distinguished positions as teachers, teacher educators, researchers and administrators in various organizations. The Placement Cell approaches a number of institutions, at both the national and international levels regarding placement. This is our earnest effort in the interest of our current & outgoing students. Currently, the Co-ordinator of the CIE Placement Cell is Mr. Vinod Kumar Kanvaria.

Infrastructural and Other Facilities for Students

Biology Lab The Biology Laboratory in the Department provides B.Ed. students a space for exploring and discussing the role of laboratory work in science education. It provides opportunities for students to revisit the experiments and activities that can be conducted with school students and establishing linkages with theory. The B.Ed. students engage themselves here in improving the experiments and activities by exploring the use of alternative materials, trying them out and analysing their results for further modifications. The laboratory provides them with hands-on experience with the various equipments, as well as other resources and their re-organisation helps them to understand the nuances of managing the biology laboratory, as well as of planning for an experiment.

Chemistry Lab The chemistry laboratory provides facilitation in the demonstration activities, explorations in practical experimental and teacher education projects in chemistry to the prospective science teachers. The models‟ collections and games in chemistry made by the B.Ed. students are an educational asset to the chemistry laboratory.

Physics Lab

The Physics Lab of the department is well resourced to conduct facilitative activities for learning

school physics. The place attains vibrancy during the activity and the discussions sessions. A

range of teaching-learning resources are available for ready reference. The place, primarily,

belongs to the students. The activities and subsequent discussions here help to develop a fresh

insight into the process of teaching-learning science across all levels. It is projected that in the

coming years the laboratory will be better resourced for creating an enabling learning environment,

within an inclusive science class.

Computer Lab The Computer lab, with 45 computers along with internet facility at 100 Mpbs, offers challenges for research to interested scholars in the field of computer education, to the visually challenged, curriculum development for the disadvantaged, creation of a database for digital films, development of CAL material, online learning material and so on. The Computer lab is going to establish a new research lab with 25 computers with internet facilities for all the research scholars.

Educational Technology (ET) Lab The Department has a well-equipped ET Lab, situated in the CIE Annexe Building. The lab has several kinds of projectors, including a Film Strip Projector, Overhead Projector, Slide Projector and LCD Projector. There is a good audio system and television in the lab. The lab is used by the students of all courses, throughout the year.

Research Room The Research Room is well equipped with computers and internet facility for its M.Phil. and Ph.D. scholars. The research scholars use this facility throughout the year for exploring and enriching their dissertation and thesis.

Classrooms All the classrooms have very good seating facilities, along with the green boards. Larger classrooms are well-equipped with ceiling mounted LCD projectors and audio systems, in the larger classrooms. Some of the classrooms have round tables for small group, cooperative sessions.


Library

The library provides several services through a team of dedicated staff. This includes scanning of documents, OPAC and scanning books and periodicals for the Physically Challenged students. The collection of documents/ research work / books and thesis is over 88775. Membership is open to all faculty (teaching and non-teaching), scholars, college teachers and B.El.Ed. students. Periodicals National thirteen and International seven are available.

Psychology Lab The Psychology Lab has a collection of over one thousand standardized tests, which are used by students, research scholars and faculty, on a regular basis. There is also an archival collection of apparatus that was used three decades ago, for experimental research. It also serves as a work space for scholars to have discussions and watch educational films.

Regional Resource Centre for Elementary Education The Regional Resource Centre for Elementary Education (RRCEE) is based on the vision of creating spaces and mechanisms that connect teachers and teacher education institutes with spaces of higher learning. Viewing teachers, as intellectuals and agents of change, the Centre provides teachers the opportunity to generate knowledge and be involved in a reflective practice that locates education, within the larger social and cultural context.

Over the last year, RRCEE continued organizing activities in pursuit of this vision. The teacher fellowship program saw nine teachers, from the 2013-2014, present their research work, at the annual teacher fellowship symposium. In June 2014, RRCEE organized a summer fellowship programme, open to teachers from across India. A three day faculty development workshop was organized in June, 2014 at the International Guest House, Delhi University. The workshop, organized in collaboration with DERT Meghalaya, was a part of the ongoing efforts to revise the D.Ed. curriculum in the state of Meghalaya. In November, 2014 RRCEE led the final workshop in


Meghalaya and the revised D.Ed. curriculum is expected to be implemented in the state from the following academic year. As one of the organizing institutions for the Fifth International Conference of the Comparative Education Society of India (CESI), RRCEE provided academic and logistical support towards the Conference held from 16 to 18 November, 2014. Through the last year, RRCEE organized two public lectures on science education and gender. The public lecture, by Dr T V Venkateswaran, discussed how the history of science can be used to talk to young children about the nature of science and Prof Nivedita Menon, in her lecture, spoke about nationalism and provided a feminist critique.

The library at RRCEE is open to the public and has over 1300 titles, covering various areas in education, literature and periodicals. The web portal (www.rrcee.net) has been upgraded with a new interactive design, while retaining the virtual repertoire of readings, articles, translated articles and other resources related to education. The audio podcast series, Dialoging Education, has been well received by the users and the interview transcripts have been published in a wide range of websites and journals.

CIE Experimental Basic School (CIE-EBS) Activities

CIE-EBS is located in the premises of the Department of Education. A coordinator in CIE plays the role of the manager, for better management of the school. Currently, the CIE-EBS Manager at CIE is Mr. Vinod Kumar Kanvaria.

CIE-EBS staff and the students are actively engaged in various kinds of in-house activities and various forums outside the school. CIE-EBS continues its journey to explore life with students. The school believes that learning and teaching go hand-in-hand. The sports and cultural events are an integral part of the school curriculum. The school visualizes curricular and additional curricular activities, as a continuum in its programs.

During the year, the students participated in various sports and cultural activities at school level and the zonal level as well, under the guidance of the teachers concerned.

Zonal School Sports

The students of the upper primary classes actively participated in Kho-Kho, Badminton, Hand Ball, Taekwondo, Zonal Athletics, Cross Country Race and marching at the Zonal level. The out standing performance by our primary students, both girls and boys, in sports brought pride to the school. They won 7 Gold, 4 Silver and 3 Bronze medals in the Zonal Athletics Meet, District North. The Taekwondo teams won 2 Golds, 2 Silvers and 3 Bronzes in the Zonal Taekwondo Tournament. In the Zonal Badminton Tournament. The primary school girls won the 3

rd position

and the primary boys won the 1st position. In the Zonal Kho-Kho Tournament, the primary girls

won the 2nd

position and the primary boys won the 1st position.

Other events

Seven students from Class VIII, competed in the NMMS (National Means Cum Merit Scholarship) 2013-14. Chanadan Mandal, Anshu and Ravi won the scholarship. The police station, Maurice Nagar, organized a painting competition for students on the occasion of Independence Day, as a gesture of friendly relationship with the community. 25 students participated in the event, which was highly appreciated and the students were given token prizes. The school has competed in the zonal „folk song‟ and „folk dance‟ events for the first time. The school achieved the 3

rd rank at the

zonal level and was selected to compete at the district level in folk dance event. The students also participated in On the Spot Painting, Slogan writing, Debate (Hindi), Declamation (Hindi), vocal music at the zonal level. The Gandhi Bhavan invited the school to participate in the Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations on 2

nd October, 2014. The presentation by the school at the Gandhi Bhawan was

highly applauded and appreciated.
