Director / Curator’s Message2014 was a very successful year for the Burnaby Art Gallery. Two hundred and twenty-one works of art were added to the Permanent Collection, one quarter of which were displayed early in the year during New Acquisitions: First Nations and Inuit Prints. The Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee was busy reviewing the numerous acquisitions and still found time to coordinate a fundraiser that raised funds for future acquisitions. Works from the Permanent Collection were included in exhibitions at the Burnaby Art Gallery as well as travelling exhibitions and loans throughout the year, giving visitors a chance to see some of the treasures from the vault alongside contemporary works.

Gallery staff continued to find ways to connect with the community at large through exhibitions in libraries and an innovative project at Deer Lake Park. Visitors to the park during the summer months had a chance to interact with artists in residence at the Tin Can Studio – an aluminum travel trailer that was converted into an art studio.

Public Art in the City of Burnaby was a primaryfocus for the collections staff in 2014. A PublicArt Inventory was completed and an onlinedatabase is ready to launch in 2015. Sixteenpublic art pieces were added to the

City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection and conservation and maintenance plans were created to ensure the objects have a long public life.

A decision to close the Art Rental and Sales Program provided an opportunity to increase staffing in the Program Services area of the gallery. This change will provide much-needed resources to deliver fine arts education programs to School District #41, home learners, preschoolers, seniors and other adult learners. It is an exciting time of growth at the gallery!

I would like to thank our funders; the City of Burnaby, British Columbia Arts Council, the Province of British Columbia, Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts.

I would also like to thank our generous donors; we are deeply grateful for your generous gifts. To the staff and volunteers who work with passion and enthusiasm to make the gallery both a welcoming and interesting place, I offer my sincere thanks.

The Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee (BAGAC)—made up of all new members—saw many opportunities for renewal in 2014. The committee is composed of members from many areas, including the business, education and visual arts sectors. We are all eager to contribute to the growth and improvement of the Burnaby Art Gallery.

The most significant effort of the committee this year was the Burnaby Art Gallery Art Sale and Fundraiser held in November in the gallery’s Fireside Room and Library. Participating alongside the Burnaby Art Gallery’s Art Rentals department were Charles van Sandwyk, Joyce Williams Gallery and the Malaspina Printmakers Society. Seven amazing works by artists Sonny Assu, Kitty Blandy, Gathie Falk, J.C. Heywood, Marianna Schmidt, Arnold Shives and Robert Young were donated to the silent auction. On behalf of BAGAC, I would like to thank the artists for their generous donations.

Chairperson’s RemarksIn conjunction with the fundraiser, there was an educational lecture focusing on the collecting of works on paper. The Art of Collecting was presented by artists Barbara Zeigler, Charles van Sandwyk and myself, along with art historian Hilary Letwin and moderated by local artist Susan Gransby.

The art sale and fundraiser was a huge success, raising over $7,500. The funds raised will go towards future art purchases for the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection. Plans are underway to hold another event in 2015, with hopes of surpassing 2014’s revenue. I am optimistic that the committee will have even more success in 2015.

The exhibition program at the Burnaby Art Gallery continues as a core function of the institution. Providing a diverse, challenging and engaging program for audiences that visit the gallery represents both a challenge and opportunity for the institution. Developing a balanced program that reflects regional, national and international artists provides the local and Metro Vancouver region with access to a diversity of practices and approaches to art.

We started the year with Recent Acquisitions of First Nations and Inuit Prints. The Burnaby Art Gallery received a significant collection of First Nations and Inuit prints, all of which were created during the 1970s to early 1980s period. The exhibit featured masterworks by Kenojuak Ashevak, Pitseolak Ashoona, Robert Davidson, Beau Dick, Joseph and Kananginak Pootoogook, Richard Hunt, Bill Reid, and Roy Henry Vickers.

Highlights of the 2014 season include the survey of works by renowned Canadian artist, Gathie Falk. Gathie Falk: paperworks highlighted new paper maché sculptural pieces created specifically for the exhibit.

An artist catalogue by the same title was also produced, and guests had the pleasure of meeting Gathie during the book signing.

Other exhibition highlights include the annual Arts Alive student art showcase (a partnership with Burnaby School District #41); Fraser Valley-based contemporary Dutch printmaker Saskia Jetten; In Wait, a visual collaboration by seven members of The Full Circle Art Collective; and a selection of photographic works from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection, which included works by Stan Douglas, Marian Penner Bancroft, Nobuo Kubota to Chick Rice.

The year ended with a contemporary showcase by Vancouver-based artist Eli Bornowsky. All is Unmentionable, Up in the Air: Eli Bornowsky, featured a number of large canvas ‘doubles’ which mirrored each other with their almost-but-not-quite identical forms. A new suite of works on paper was presented, as well as a selection of works from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection.

The exhibitions presented at offsite locations such as Burnaby’s public libraries and community centres continue to be an integral component of the exhibition program for the Burnaby Art Gallery. Offsite exhibitions strive to “reach beyond the walls of the gallery” and present works from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection and local community members or emerging artists. Bob MacIntyre, the gallery’s Exhibitions Coordinator/Preparator, and Jennifer Cane, the gallery’s Assistant Curator, are responsible for managing and developing this program. Through our offsite programs we aspire to:

•Interactwithvariouslocalandcommunitygroups through visual art created by local, national and international artists in traditional and non-traditional exhibition spaces.

•Createopportunitiesforvisitors, programparticipants and patrons to engage in an experience with visual art that expands and develops knowledge, skills and understanding.

•Provideadiversifiedandculturallyresponsiveart education programming throughout the local community to develop tolerance, understanding and encourage community interest and engagement in the art gallery and the services it provides.

Online and Touring ExhibitionsIn 2014 the Burnaby Art Gallery continued to reach a wide network of audiences through our online and touring exhibition, Takao Tanabe: Chronicles of Form and Place (www.formandplace.ca), as well as through a loan of works by L. Lemoine FitzGerald to the Seymour Art Gallery for the exhibition Ordinary Beauty: Prints by L. LeMoine FitzGerald from the Burnaby Art Gallery Collection, curated by Hilary Letwin, PhD. These avenues of engagement further exemplify the galley’s commitment and ability to engage and educate audiences worldwide–making art tangible. The gallery is also proud to support local, national and international institutions by providing works from the collection on loan. An amazing collection of art. – Debbie and Amanda Tautscher

Public ProgramsThe Burnaby Art Gallery public programs are designed to encourage interaction with works in our exhibitions–both from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection and works on loan. Our aim is to reach a broad audience and address the interests of diverse segments of the Burnaby and Metro Vancouver population. 2014 was an exciting year that saw 1,873 people participate in programs and took great strides towards our goal of diversity of programming. Tin Can Studio, a summer special project, saw the Burnaby Art Gallery collaborating with artist/public engagement facilitators Jenny Lee Craig and Caroline Ballhorn. Tin Can Studio is a fully mobile and multi-purpose studio/gallery/social space housed in a 1969 Streamline trailer, and with it the artists created a fantastic experience in Deer Lake Park for over 300 visitors to come together to make, build and share ideas.

A wide variety of public talks and lectures were offered. Highlights include an inspiring talk on First Nations artwork by Gary Wyatt of Spirit Wrestler Gallery, intimate tours in Mandarin of most exhibits, panel discussions by the artists of the Full Circle Art Collective, a panel talk on collecting, and a special fundraising art auction. Hands-on programs for all ages continued to be a strong connection point for the community to engage with artworks and artists. Exhibiting artist Saskia Jetten taught a fantastic full day program for teens, combining print, identity and fashion. Summer students had the exceptional opportunity to take inspiration from Gathie Falk’s sculptural pieces.

Terrific! Great atmosphere, clear instructions, cool results. – Adult program participant

Some of our workshops took a decidedly social spin, and we had a great turnout for Exquisite Corpse, a social drawing night at Halloween, led by artist Ben Frey. Amateur printmakers continue to benefit from the low cost and supportive Open Print Studio, and during the September teacher’s strike we ran two full weeks of Art School. Looking ahead to 2015, we are excited to emphasize our gallery and park setting with a range of diverse programs that are directly connected to exhibits, collections and artists, while building the gallery’s sense of community.

Page 14: Annual Report 2014Art+Gallery/BAG+Annual+Report… · Annual Report 2014. 2 Director / Curator’s Message 2014 was a very successful year for the Burnaby Art Gallery. Two hundred

More than 5,300 students across Metro Vancouver had opportunities to learn about and make art with Burnaby Art Gallery this year. A long teachers’ strike gave us an opportunity to provide art education programming for children at the gallery during Art School. Students visited the gallery, created artwork to exhibit during Arts Alive 2014, experienced original artwork in their classroom and gained work experience through career programs. Teachers were able to participate with a number of professional development workshops we offered, and we continued working closely with Burnaby School District 41 to offer free programs to 10 classrooms.

We launched a new outreach workshop, Printmaking with BC First Nations Designs, and in just two months more than 1,000 children learned about shapes and design in coastal First Nations art through stamping and silkscreen. It was developed in part by two UBC student teachers on practicum with us, and we were able to purchase four prints by BC Aboriginal artists for the Education Collection, to be used in this program.

In the galleries, students had more opportunities to see First Nations artworks with part day tour and workshops, and with the full day Printer’s Studio. During the fall, visiting classes worked collaboratively during In Wait: Full Circle Art Collective, and our littlest visitors had an introduction to the art world with Art & Me, a tour designed particularly for active minds and bodies. Our tour and full day programs for home learners were also popular, with participants creating a thematic portfolio over their intensive day.

In 2015, we are very excited to be launching three full day outreach workshops that were created this year. We were able to purchase artworks by local artists for use in the programs. We have long been receiving requests for more time in the outreach workshops, so we are very excited to meet that demand. The programs do an excellent job of connecting art with other curriculum areas such as math, and allow students to work with media and equipment they might not otherwise have access to.

Highlights of 2014 gifts include a large collection of 53 BC First Nations print works from the 1970’s which were granted Cultural Property status by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

This collection is of great value and includes works by Bill Reid and Robert Davidson, amongst many other BC masters. Further treasures include works by Francisco de Goya, Rembrandt Van Rijn, Francesco Bartolozzi, and William Hogarth, as well as artists of Canadian renown such as Samuel Maclure, George Campbell Tinning, Gathie Falk, Noboru Sawai, and Jack Wise. Additionally, the Burnaby Art Gallery purchased 22 new works for its collection, including works by Evan Lee, Jason McLean, Jamie Evrard and Robert Young, amongst others. On behalf of the City of Burnaby, The Burnaby Art Gallery wishes to thank its generous donors for adding to this prestigious collection of well over 5,000 works.

Volunteers are an essential component of Burnaby Art Gallery’s operations. In 2014, we had 57 volunteers generously contribute 2,702 hours of their expertise and skills to all areas of the gallery, including children’s classes, school tours, receptions and research. Many of our experienced volunteers continued this year, and we were lucky enough to have many new local youths give back to their community while gaining valuable work experience in the arts. We sincerely thank our volunteers whose contributions allow the gallery to deliver an excellent standard of programming.

The Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee (BAGAC) continues to be an important component of the gallery’s ongoing commitment to community engagement. Under the leadership of BAGAC, the gallery continues to build our reputation within the community through challenging and engaging exhibitions, thoughtful acquisitions of historical and contemporary works of art on paper and an increased presence within the community through alternative exhibition sites. Diversifying the gallery’s revenue streams continues to be an important factor in relation to expanding the gallery’s reach to diverse and expanding communities.
