Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys has seen tremendous change and growth this year. We are truly inspired by your commitment to Girl Scouts and to developing girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

Today’s girls are tomorrow’s leaders. That’s why everything we do is designed to help them reach their full potential. We know that when women and girls participate equally in their societies, meaningful change occurs. Investing in girls produces the greatest return in economic development, social progress, and public health. It improves not only individual lives, but also the fabric of society as a whole. Girl Scouts takes girls to new places; it helps them rise to new challenges; it helps them develop their strengths, passions, and confidence. But where these girls will then take the world is the truly amazing concept. Thank you for being a part of this important movement.

We want to bring Girl Scouting to all girls, and we work every day to remove barriers to access. Financial assistance is a big part of that effort—no girl is turned away due to an inability to pay. In 2013, we provided $630,000 in grants to ensure access to the benefits of the Girl Scout program. Your support makes this outreach possible and Girl Scouts accessible.

Girl Scouts River Valleys also invests annually in programming for girls who might not otherwise have access to Girl Scouts through our successful, staff-led program, ConnectZ. Girls in ConnectZ enjoy a troop experience and realize the benefits of Girl Scouts in their schools and communities. Your gifts allow us to continue this program; you have an immediate impact on these girls and their futures.

Thank you for all you do to help ensure that Girl Scouts can continue its 101-year tradition of building strong girls who meet their fullest potential—girls who can go anywhere, be anything, and change our world. On behalf of the 41,000 girls and 17,000 volunteers and adult members of our council, we thank you for your support of our mission and our girls.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Deb Wilkinson Chair of the Board of Directors

Linda B. Keene Chief Executive Officer

Aquaponics combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) and offers an innovative way for families to grow affordable, healthy food.

She also interacted with local people and learned more about their culture.

At the three-day camp she worked with other girls to solve problems and build machines using motors, batteries, levers, and pulleys. For Mikaela, the experience was pure play, but it laid an important foundation of confidence and determination from which she can draw upon for years to come.

UnIte CommUnItIeSThe Roseville-based Hmong Women’s Circle meets every Tuesday afternoon. A Girl Scouts ConnectZ troop, the girls come from low-income backgrounds and are often considered high risk. Here, under the guidance of their leaders, Choua and Barbara, they feel free to talk about issues within their community and how to address them. They also engage in traditional Girl Scouts lessons and activities such as financial literacy, outdoor education, and healthy bodies and relationships.

How often do we consider the power of friendship? For Doree Gamble, friendship—with oneself and others—was at the heart of life.

Doree, who died last October, developed Girl Scouts River Valleys’

“Friends” program, which she delivered to troops across the council. Through the program, girls talked about the meaning of friendship and what qualities one should look for in positive friends and role models. Doree also taught them a critical lesson—that each girl must be a friend to herself, first. “I want girls to know that it’s OK to like themselves,” said Doree.

A true champion of women and girls, Doree volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader and trainer for more than 50 years. In 2012, she was honored by the council as one of the 100 most influential women in Girl Scouting. She served on the Council’s Planned Giving and Finance Committees and helped found the council’s Juliette Gordon Low Society through which donors can make Girl Scouts a beneficiary of their estate plans.

“When I was a troop leader, I saw the positive impact Girl Scouts’ activities had on girls,” said Doree. “My memories of the happy young faces of Girl Scouts, participating in events with friends, motivates my giving. I recall the 10-year-old girl who put her hand on mine after a troop cookout and said, ‘I’ve had more fun today than I have ever had in my whole life.’”

Others observed Doree’s natural connection with girls who easily shared with her their hopes, fears, dreams, and accomplishments. “She believed that every girl had the potential to be great and found a special quality in each one,” said Jeffrey Redmon, a fellow board member. “From her work on the board to

interacting one-on-one with girls, Doree embodied everything good about Girl Scouting.”

Girl Scouts’ volunteers also benefited from Doree’s work and enthusiasm. In an effort to provide girls with the highest-quality programming, she organized the first ever Training Conference at Camp Lakamaga in Scandia, Minnesota. This annual event trains hundreds of troop, camp, and service unit volunteers.

“A girl will have an enriching experience she might not otherwise have had. It’s as good as being able to participate myself, and I know I’m helping to make the world a better place.”

Doree often said that if she had a million dollars, she would build a Girl Scout camp because, “Magic happens when people get out in the open.” Doree’s friends and sister Girl Scouts have created a campaign to name a new cabin at Camp Lakamaga in her honor. Girls who stay in Doree’s Friendship Cabin will carry on her legacy of building strong, supportive friendships and fostering self-love. “We start by celebrating the beauty in each of us,” said Doree.

“And from within us, we reach out to touch the beauty in each other.”

SAnDY ClAIR

Sandy Clair’s experience as a Girl Scout was cut short, and she never forgot it. Her father’s Navy career kept the family constantly on the move. “When I was in first grade, we moved six times!” she exclaims. Sandy longed to participate in Girl Scouts—to connect with other girls her age, learn new things, and accomplish goals together. Her dream was briefly realized from the second to the fifth grade, when her father received an extended stay in California. The family then moved to Mankato, Minnesota which didn’t have a Girl Scout troop to join.

Many years later, Sandy’s daughter, Laurel, enrolled in a Maple Grove troop in the first grade, and Sandy jumped at the chance to serve as a troop leader. She led the same troop for 12 years. Among the highlights was the troop earning its way to a national camping trip to the Girl Scout National Camp Center West in Wyoming. “They sold lots and lots of cookies,” Sandy laughs. “It was such a wonderful leadership experience for the girls. They learned how to plan for the trip, how to pack, how to travel a long distance, and how to plan activities while at camp. We grew more connected through that trip and none of us—the girls—or me will ever forget those memories and the bond we experienced.”

Sandy credits her success as a leader to working one-on-one with the girls. “I tried to help each girl develop her unique skills,” she says. “I taught them

the importance of thoughtful planning, decision making, and taking on leadership roles.”

While she still visits with members of her troop the Girl Scout she knows best is, of course, her daughter, Laurel. “It was so important for her to find a safe, all-girl environment in which she could try new things,” says Sandy. “Girl Scouts laid the foundation for Laurel’s confidence and curiosity. Today she’s a successful pharmacist in a leadership position. I think Girl Scouts definitely had a role in that.”

Today, Sandy is a proud member of the Juliette Gordon Low Society. The reason behind her membership is simple: “It takes money to fund the Girl Scouts. Everybody needs to step up and help.”

tHE JulIEttE goRdon low SocIEty Founded in 1984, the Juliette Gordon Low Society honors individuals, foundations, and organizations who demonstrate a deep commitment to the future of Girl Scouting by contributing to the endowment fund or including Girl Scouts River Valleys in their estate planning. In 2013, the society welcomed new members Sandy Clair, Sara Danzinger, Kathy Meyerle, Linda Marie Swanson Svidal, and Kim Wolfgram Salz.

You can become a member of the Juliette Gordon Low Society by including River Valleys in a will or as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, naming River Valleys in a charitable trust agreement, or making a gift of $1,000 or more. If you have already named Girl Scouts River Valleys as the beneficiary of a planned gift, let us know and we will welcome you as a Juliette Gordon Low Society member. Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys experienced a financially challenging fiscal year 2013, and we are actively responding to secure a strong financial position.

Declining membership contributed to shortfalls in both product program and retail revenue. Contributed income from both individual and corporate foundation donations also fell below anticipated results.

However, a series of expense actions followed by mid-year restructuring contributed to improved financial performance in the second half of the fiscal year. We also implemented several new strategies, including a robust customer relationship management system designed to increase operational efficiency and improve and enhance girl and volunteer recruitment and retention.

River Valleys finished the year with a –$269,120* change in net assets. Our balance sheet remained strong, with total assets in excess of $40 million and no long-term debt. Our internal controls and processes are also healthy; the 2013 audit

was completed with no adjustments, material weaknesses, or management comments.

We remain committed to maintaining a solid financial position that will keep girl scouting accessible and affordable for years to come.

With a keen eye to the future,
