From the Executive Director

More often than not real change happens as a slow steady accumulation rather than one momentous act. Small acts taken over and over again can eventually add up to wonderful lifesaving achievements. We see this every day. Every donation from a child’s lemonade stand to a foundation gift, from the hours given by dedicated volunteers to the care from shelter staff, it all adds up.

When a shelter animal gets adopted, finds a home and family of their own, it is truly because of the many small acts of caring and kindness that add up to that momentous event. The power of the cumulative effect of small acts of kindness is transformative for a community.

Because of you… lives are changed every day for our shelter animals and the people they touch.

Because of you...

444 students learned about empathy, animal care, and the importance of licensing and spay/neuter through Shelter outreach programs and school field trips.

Changing lives by connecting animals and people - this concept is at the heart of what we do at the Animal Shelter. Whether it’s through adoptions or volunteer engagement, the people who pass through our doors are vital to providing quality care and attention for all of our animals.

Compassionate community members provide foster homes, walk dogs, groom cats, work events, and perform a myriad of other tasks that may seem small to some, but mean the world to the animals. Each time someone gives their time to help, their action has a ripple effect that they often never see or even imagine.

But we see it every day: Someone spends an hour on their lunch break to walk a dog. That dog releases energy and learns that people are kind and safe. Each time a potential adopter walks by his kennel, the dog wags a little more enthusiastically. One of those times, the perfect person finds him and two (or more) lives are changed forever. This is repeated almost daily for the over 400 animals that are adopted out of our Shelter annually. Amazing!

Children and students are also getting engaged. Whether through field trips, WOW projects, or their own initiative, children are learning lessons of compassion and empathy that only the four-legged can teach them. Many are even learning about philanthropy early, donating lemonade stand proceeds, birthday money, and holding fundraisers for the animals. They continue to be an inspiration for us all.

So whether you picked up a shovel to help us dig out of the mudslide last fall, walked a dog, forwarded one of our Facebook posts, or lent a hand at an event, your actions made a difference and continue to be linked to the amazing and wonderful things that happen daily at the Shelter.

The Heart of our Programs

In the Wake of the Fire & Mudslides...

~When the Beaver Creek fire threatened the Shelter and evacuation was imminent, our volunteer “phone tree” kicked into high gear. All the Shelter animals were safely out in less than 1 hour thanks to the quick actions of our staff and volunteers!

~Our generous community and volunteers opened up their homes and kennels to house 35 dogs, 20 cats, and 2 rabbits for a week when our animals were evacuated from the Shelter.

~More than 50 volunteers pitched in with shovels, wheelbarrows, and straw bales to help clean up after the mudslide, and to protect us from future slides. Their work continues to keep the animals safe!

Promoting PAWsibilities

Because of you...

the average length of stay for our sheltered animals has decreased 30% since 2009, getting them into loving homes three weeks sooner!E CLICK: To learn more about our

foster program, visit animalshelterwrv.org/foster_program.php

Every day, the staff and volunteers at the shelter focus on how to create a new future for the animals in our care. We are proud to provide innovative and industry-leading services to not only enhance the lives of the animals while they are at the shelter, but to support every adoption so each animal can thrive in their new home.

From stress management and behavior modification to post-adoption support and counseling, the amount of time spent with and on behalf of each animal is what truly transforms lives. While most animals arrive at the shelter ready to blend into the family life of a new home immediately, some animals need a little more help.

Through our enrichment, behavior training, Pet Pal mentoring and foster programs, staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that every animal has a chance at finding a new home. Our in-depth adoption counseling helps ensure that each new home is the perfect match for that particular animal. And our post-adoption support helps ensure that adopted animals and their new families are able to successfully navigate any bumps in the road, helping the connections made to be permanent and happy.

Though we do everything in our power to make sure each animal stays happy and healthy while in shelter, we also know that there is no substitute for a real home. Therefore, while our animal care staff and volunteers work with the animals to help them be ready to meet their new families, other members of our team work to get the word out about adoptable animals, singing their praises and educating the community about the particular traits that will appeal to potential adopters, getting the animals home and out of shelter more and more quickly.

By celebrating the individuality of each animal, we are maximizing the possibilities - or should we say PAWsibilities - for their future.

Community Commitment...

~ An average of 42 Shelter volunteers per month together gave more than 15,000 hours of their time in 2013!

~18 of our most dedicated volunteers each gave more than 100 hours of volunteer time, while an even more amazing 8 volunteers gave more than 500 hours each in 2013!

~Another almost 1,500 people came to the Shelter to walk dogs & pet cats, helping them stay happy while in shelter.

~Our dog behavior training classes for com-munity owned and newly adopted pets had 70 dogs and their owners participate in 2013.

Spreading Change

Because of you...

since 2009, more than 35,000 pounds of pet food has been given to hungry dogs and cats through our Paws for Hunger partnership with The Hunger Coalition!

One of the most rewarding benefits of success is being able to reach beyond yourself and help others. This is not just true for individuals, but for organizations as well. With the dramatic success of our long-term investment in free spay/neuter services for any Blaine County resident, extensive community education about the importance of spay/neuter, licensing, and the joys of adopting a pet, we are now able to look at the larger problems of pet homelessness and euthanasia of adoptable animals and take strategic action to share our success and help other communities improve their services.

In Blaine County, we are continuing to improve our outreach to underserved populations. Our Paws for Hunger pet food bank partnership with The Hunger Coalition provides dramatic results in keeping animals out of shelter and where they belong: in loving homes. Our rural outreach services provide vaccinations, licenses, and identification tags to animals, in addition to education about and sign ups for our weekly No-Cost Community Spay/Neuter Clinics.

However, we are not just able to effect change at home, but now we are also able to spread change beyond the borders of Blaine County. With the decrease in unwanted litters resulting from our spay/neuter services, we are able to dramatically increase the number of animals we save from homelessness and unnecessary euthanasia at overcrowded shelters in neighboring communities. By providing a relief valve for these shelters, we’re helping them improve their own services and utilize often limited resources to better help the animals they have.

When you adopt from the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, not only are you saving the life of your new best friend, but you’re also creating space for us to save the life of another animal. When you support the shelter, whether through gifts of time, resources, or spreading the word, you are making all this possible.

The Impact of Outreach...

~In 2013, we were able to rescue 180 dogs and cats from other regional shelters, many of them facing unnecessary euthanasia be-cause of overcrowding.

~75% of Paws for Hunger pet food bank clients surveyed reported they were likely to have had to give up their pet without the as-sistance of the program.

~Shelter veterinary staff performed 568 spay/neuter surgeries in 2013, and over 5,000 since the program started in 2006, prevent-ing countless unwanted litters & treating pet overpopulation at its source.

So Many Ways to Help

Because of you...

we are able to feed, house, and care for the homeless animals in our community 24 hours/day, 365 days/year.

Act as an Ambassador:Word of mouth is one of the most powerful allies we have. By sharing your “happy tails” of how living with an animal enriches your life, spreading the word about what great pets shelter animals make, and educating others about Animal Shelter programs like the free spay/neuter clinics, you can make a dramatic impact on our success.

Share Your Time:As you’ve seen elsewhere in this report, volunteers are the backbone of our organization, providing critical support for the animals, programs, and fundraising efforts. Diverse people with a myriad of talents and interests contribute their time on behalf of the homeless animals in our community.

Provide Financial Support:The programs and services offered by the Animal Shelter are funded almost entirely by the generosity of individuals. These gifts, whether $5 or $5000, enable us to feed, house, and care for the special animals that depend on the Shelter every day of the year. There are a variety of ways to support the Shelter financially, including a direct gift of cash, an in kind gift to the Shelter or Barkin’ Basement, a tribute gift in honor of a loved one or pet, and a planned gift or bequest in your will.

For more information on these ways of giving, call (208) 788-4351 or visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org.

~The Barkin’ Basement Thrift Store is a vital part of the Animal Shelter’s success. Since 1994, the Barkin’ has been a valuable source of revenue for the Animal Shelter, with 100% of proceeds benefiting theanimals we care for.

~In addition to serving the community as an affordable source of quality used items, the Barkin’ Basement helps connect more people with the mission of the Animal Shelter by serving as a downtown location for information about adoptable animals, Shelter events, and important issues like spay/neuter.

~By donating your high-quality used items and shopping at the Barkin’ Basement, you’re helping provide a sustainable income stream to shelter and feed our homeless animals.

The generosity of individuals continues to be the number one source of income for the Animal Shelter, making possible every achievement noted in this report and every life saved.

We receive donations of all sizes, from a few dollars given by a child to a large foundation gift investing in a transformative program. Each and every gift, regardless of size, is vital to add up to the whole of what gets accomplished on behalf of the animals every day.

In fact, 62% of the gifts we received in 2013 were $100 or less. We are proud to be a grassroots organization, supported by the diverse members of our community.

Thank you!
