How best to embrace the past, while preparing our students for a rapidly evolving future?

The story of Sarah and Abraham resonates for many reasons, as it speaks to the depth and breadth - the complexity, if you will, of family and community dynamics. In Genesis, Chapters 23 and 24, Sarah reaches the end of her life, and out of respect for her, Abraham negotiates with his sworn enemy for land as an appropriate resting place. Immediately thereafter, he sends out his servant to seek a bride for his son Isaac and finds the most brilliant and beautiful, Rebekkah. A plausible interpretation would be to view Abraham’s actions as examples of honoring the past, making peace with the present and expecting excellence in the future.

One of the strengths of our educational community is exercising these very elements. We honor certain traditions and practices, not for tradition’s sake, but because these are good and wholesome and worthy of sharing across generations. Adhering to our Mission and Outcome has allowed us to create and shape our community. Our chapel program is one example, as is our All Saints’ Day celebration, and others include reading and wrestling with great literature, history and writing exercises. Our ongoing faculty curricular and co-curricular development is an example of making peace with the present; for as the world changes at an increasingly dizzying speed, we need to make appropriate mission and outcome-driven adjustments along the way, turning that which is complex into comprehensible. And striving for excellence is what we do, day-in, and day-out. We are not perfect, but we expect to work honestly and diligently at improving our educational model. This process means having the courage to try new things, with the overarching goal of better serving our community of learners. A bridge? We believe it is collaborative, project-based learning, with the Solar Car project and our Honors College serving as prime examples.

Our community is strong because we take time to honor practices and people who are foundational to our success. Our community is tested and our piers are reinforced by wrestling with challenges and opportunities every day. And our community is strengthened and buttressed when we continue to put our best foot forward.

Perhaps the most special part of our DNA is reflected by our philanthropic heart. Our double helix is comprised of parents, faculty, students, alumni, grandparents and friends, sharing myriad gifts, to pump lifeblood into our community. We are grateful for the many ways people give of their time, their talent and their treasure to All Saints’ Episcopal School. We are indeed a community of Saints!

Many Blessings,

Tad Bird, D.Min., Head of School Rick Merrill, President, Board of Trustees President and CEO of Cook Children’s

Division Head Robin Page started the Early Childhood program at All Saints’ Normandale campus in 2010. With the amazing support of our School’s leadership and community, our Early Childhood program has grown into one that offers 3-year-olds, Pre-Kindergarten and Bridge Kindergarten students a balanced approach

to intellectual, physical, emotional, social and spiritual development. It is truly a world-class education in a world-class environment. Most importantly, the Early Childhood team provides guidance for each individual child to develop his or her skills to become confident and to develop a love for lifelong learning.

“I look back on my ten years as director of a local pre-school as an invaluable opportunity to prepare for my role at All Saints’. I managed all aspects of the school’s operations, which put me in a position to work with Dr. Bird and team in cultivating this dynamic and innovative program. I am so blessed to spend my days with precious children, providing them a nurturing, fun and educational environment.”

Division Head Debra Koppelberger has led All Saints’ Lower School since 2011. From Kindergarten through Grade 6, the Lower School curriculum is designed to challenge students academically while building a strong foundation for learning. Our students are prepared for future grades through a gradual release

of independence and support for strengthening their confidence in learning and their sense of self. The Lower School team supports and challenges students through the use of inquiry, interdisciplinary learning and the encouragement of students to hone new skills and expand their thinking.

“Leading the Lower School is a wonderful opportunity to combine the practice of the art and science of teaching and leadership skills. All of my previous experience, from being a classroom teacher to a curriculum director, earning a Master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, and serving in a variety of administrative roles in public and independent schools has prepared me to serve and lead at all All Saints’.”

Division Head Mike Gonzalez has been at the helm of All Saints’ Middle School since 2006. During the transitional and formative years of Grades 7 and 8, the Middle School team builds upon the Lower School foundation and continue to develop students’

levels of academic performance, responsibility and servant leadership. In addition to the rigors of the core curriculum, our Middle School students participate in fine arts, athletics and community service.

“Though I received a B.A. in Education and an M.A. in Urban Affairs, I spent more than twenty years as a commercial real estate broker. The key to success in that business is to know your clients well. Once I left real estate to follow my passion for teaching, I learned I still apply that technique every day. I know our kids; I know our teachers. And we do everything we can to give our students the confidence to tackle the rigors of Upper School.”

Division Head and Assistant Head of School David Madison originally served as All Saints’ Middle School Chaplain, leading our religious studies curriculum to nationally recognized standing. In 2010, he stepped into the Division Head and Assistant Head of School role, working hand in hand with Head of School Dr. Tad Bird. In Grades 9-12, our students are

confident to embrace all the Upper School has to offer. The Upper School team encourages students to take full ownership of their learning from coordinating schedules through juggling numerous academic projects and co-curricular acitivites that are included in this world-class college preparatory program.

“My years as an Upper School student at All Saints’ were formative. I was blessed with a caring and loving faculty, and those relationships fueled my passion for teaching and learning. As an educator, I hope to create environments where teachers and students can work together to realize their full potential.”

Fine Arts Department Chair and All Saints’ first endowed faculty member, Kathi Tiffany, has been at All Saints’ since 1988. The mission of the robust Fine Arts program that she and her faculty members have integrated into the community is to promote participation in all areas of the Fine Arts including music, drama, visual arts and dance for all students every year. In the Lower School, students participate

in music, drama, visual arts and dance. Middle School students participate in music, drama, musical theatre, visual arts, percussion and dance. And in the Upper School, where students are required to spend a minimum of two years studying in the Fine Arts, a full spectrum of course offerings within music, drama, musical theatre, visual arts, percussion, dance, digital photography and video, and design are available.

“It was during college at Valparaiso where I worked summers in graphic design that I realized two things – one, I loved to design, and two, my passion was for teaching the arts rather than producing them in a business setting. I have the best of both worlds here!”

Athletic Director Aaron Beck has been in his role at All Saints’ since 2007. The athletic philosophy that he and the coaches have instilled in All Saints’ is centered around the encouragement of critical thinking both in practice and in competition. At the Middle School level, the program is designed to give the young athletes options to develop and explore. The Freshman and Junior Varsity teams prepare athletes

for the next level by developing and refining the fundamental skills and game strategies needed to be successful. While winning is a preferred outcome at the Varsity level, we focus on character development by supporting a strong work ethic, teamwork, School pride and accountability. Success is judged by the manner in which we play.

“I have had the privilege to serve three schools within the Southwest Preparatory Conference. As a result, I developed life long relationships with incredible student athletes and witnessed their growth along the way. Some of them are members of our coaching staff today.”

The Finance Committee works diligently to utilize the School’s tuition and philanthropic revenue to provide the very best educational experience for our students. At the same time, the Committee strives to educate the Board and our parent community about the financial model that supports all independent schools – revenue from tuition, charitable contributions, endowment income, and miscellaneous or alternative revenue sources. This year, under the leadership of Matt McLaughlin, the Finance Committee held several extended workshops to thoroughly explore the impact of the School’s budget on tuition rates. From these workshops, Board members who are not members of the Finance Committee gained a much greater understanding of the workings of the Committee.

Management of the School’s Endowment Fund is delegated to the Investment Committee in partnership with our professional advisors, Diesslin & Associates. Established in 2007, the Investment Committee, led this year by Baker Gentry, continued to be good stewards of the School’s resources during a period of worldwide macro-risks. The result yielded solid returns. For 2013-2014, the School emphasized growth of endowment assets over current spending. As a result, no distributions were made from endowment funds except as required to pay brokerage and investment management fees.

“Throughout my investment career, I have become familiar with the operations of a wide variety of investment groups. I am impressed

by the seriousness and professionalism the All Saints’ Investment Committee brings

to executing its fiduciary responsibility in managing the Schools’ endowment.”

The collective Marketing and Admission Committee is responsible for the School’s branding in the marketplace and for supporting the School’s enrollment management strategy, admission process and retention programs. These two committees joined forces this year to better coordinate a personal, targeted outreach effort, to both prospective and newly enrolled families. Growing market demand and increased interest in admission resulted in record enrollment and prompted us to involve more current families in welcoming activities. Two orientation sessions, “All Saints’ 101,” were held over the summer for new families. The goal of these sessions was to encourage involvement in our parent volunteer community and to help them be well prepared for a smooth start of school.

Wendy Barron and Paula Brockway

Through the leadership of Co-chairs Wendy Barron and Paula Brockway, the School’s Advancement Committee experienced a dynamic year. Because the Committee’s activities involve many aspects of school life, the Committee was enlarged to include several new members-at-large representing parents from every Division of the School. In response to our growing enrollment, the Committee formed a Parent Relations Task Force to study and improve upon our outreach to new families and the ways in which we care for current families. The Task Force made several recommendations, all of which were accepted for implementation.

Another focus was to support our Parent Auxiliaries and to promote parent engagement. To that end, a Volunteer Fair was organized in the spring, and a printed brochure, “Parent Roadmap” was produced for all new families and distributed at two summer orientation sessions aptly titled, “All Saints’ 101.” Between the broad involvement of Advancement Committee members and new strategies for parent outreach, this year’s work will ensure that All Saints’ retains and strengthens it unique culture and sense of community.

Both Wendy and Paula bring an abundance of community involvement and organizational skills to their roles as Committee Co-Chairs and Trustees. Wendy has held volunteer and professional leadership roles from adolescence, in college, and all her adult life. Paula’s experience embodies a love of community service for those less fortunate and an appreciation for Episcopal Schools and Parishes.

Like all private schools, All Saints’ considers its Annual Fund a significant source of revenue to help cover real operating costs of the School. In fact, our Annual Fund and other contributions fill a 9% gap in revenue where our tuition dollars fall short. Each year, leaders within our community step in to chair the Annual Fund for All Saints’ Episcopal School. For 2013-2014, Wende Dwyer-Johnsen and Andrew Johnsen provided remarkable energy and focus in helping educate our community about the necessity of the Annual Fund and in raising community participation to an all-time high.

“It was an honor and a privilege to serve as chairs of the All Saints’ Annual Fund campaign for the 2013-2014 school year...and perhaps a bit daunting. But, with these essential ingredients – an outstanding team of class and division level leaders, superb All Saints’ staff, the foundation of success from previous years, an awesome campaign of education and engagement and a little tenacity to keep pushing toward the goal – combined with a generous school community, we exceeded our campaign goals.

“It was tremendous to meet the financial goal, and again, our hats are off to all who made that happen. We also set our sights on the goal of growing participation levels for some very important reasons. Strong participation across the All Saints’ community means in future years we can build on the habit of giving to the Annual Fund. Strong participation also means we are casting a vote – a vote for All Saints’. Strong participation spurs School pride for sure, but it also enhances the School’s competitiveness for grants and other pursuits where a demonstrated community commitment earns extra credit. Clearly, growing participation was an important goal to reach. So when the 2013-2014 campaign achieved new participation records, it was doubly gratifying.

“All Saints’ Episcopal School really is a wonderful school, and we are proud to have joined forces with so many others to make the 2013-2014 Annual Fund a success. As we all support this year’s Annual Fund campaign, let’s remember…There’s no place like All Saints’!”

All Saints’ current capital campaign, Building for Character: For ALL the Saints, continued in the quiet phase during 2013-2014. Because of the generosity and early support of the All Saints’ community and the leadership of campaign co-chairs, Raney and Pete Chambers, Dana and Dee Kelly, Jr., and Linda and George Young, Jr., the campaign raised a total of $14,316,069 by June 30, 2014. The most significant event this year was the acquisition of the 44 acres adjacent to the north end of Campus, complementing the already transformative addition of the Dillard Center for Early Childhood Education. The additional acreage preserves the integrity of our Campus, provides a more secure environment and allows endless possibilities for future programming.

“Our law firm has gone through many changes since 1979 and

must always respond to market demand. I’ve watched All Saints’

go through the same thoughtful process time and time again.

This current capital campaign is a critical step in protecting our

School’s future without sacrificing the culture we all love.”

PTO BOARD 2013-2014

“I have had the pleasure of working with so many incredible educators and community supporters within the All Saints’

family. PTO’s volunteer base is rich with gifts of time and talent, and I am so blessed to be a part of it.”

KELLY PARSLEYPTO President

Community Volunteer

The Parent Teacher Organization is the oldest of the three parent auxiliary groups, and its primary purpose is to support the faculty, staff, students and parents at All Saints’. The PTO does this in many ways including organizing classroom/grade liaisons and room parents in all Divisions; supporting Middle School with the Chili Kickoff and Project Empathy; and planning Homecoming activities and the Prom for Upper School. This organization also operates Harvest Fair where students and families enjoy fall-themed treats, games, rides and activities, and supports long-standing events such as the Scholastic Book Fair, Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, the Parent Speaker Forum, the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Lunch, First Friday Breakfasts for all Divisions and quarterly Division Head lunches. Under the leadership of PTO President Kelly Parsley and the PTO Board, countless volunteers helped make this year a big success.

BOOSTER CLUB BOARD 2013-2014

“I consider real estate investment a high-energy business; when we see an opportunity we like, we move quickly to secure the deal. I took the same approach to my leadership role in Booster. Momentum has been

building for years in All Saints’ athletics. Why not give it my all?” CRAIG KELLY

Booster Club PresidentManaging Partner, Kelly Capital Partners, LLC

Under Craig Kelly’s leadership, the Booster Club of 2013-2014 was one of the most energetic and effective in the history of Booster support. His tagline “Be Early, Be Loud, Stay Late!” was prominently displayed at McNair Stadium, in the athletic facilities and on spirit wear. It was through this motto that Craig and the Booster Board were able to lead our School to all-time athletic attendance, support and spirit.

The Booster Club promotes School unity and spirit in all athletic endeavors, as well as character development and the physical well-being of students through support and financial assistance for physical education and athletic programs in every Division. Booster promotes the mission of All Saints’ athletics to build character through teamwork and sportsmanship, teaching students the value of hard work and complementing their hard work in the classroom. Booster Club hosts the Fall Rally in September and the All Saints’ Golf Classic in May.

FAME BOARD 2013-2014

“I was attracted to neonatology because there is a big part of me that wants to nurture children and give them the best start they

can have in life. I see the similarity to FAME in that we work with faculty to build up these young artists and give them every

advantage so they can continue to do what they love.”

JEANNETTE IGLESIASFAME President

Neonatologist

FAME supports every Division in the visual arts, dance, music, musical theatre, drama, photography, film and design. FAME also delivers a Masters Series to bring in experts of various Fine Arts disciplines to educate and inspire the All Saints’ community. Under the leadership of Jeannette Iglesias in 2013-2014, FAME provided financial grants for equipment, supplies and costumes for performances and other Fine Arts projects. FAME also hosted Green Room Hospitality receptions for Fine Arts events and produced a playbill for the Middle and Upper School musicals.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD 2013-2014

“I’ve been involved in volunteer leadership since my days at Texas Tech and wanted to translate my experience to All Saints’ alumni, increasing participation and engagement,

making everyone feel welcome, valuing their involvement and most of all, making everything fun!”

BLAKE LLOYD ’96Alumni Association President

Vice President, CBRE

Members of the All Saints’ Episcopal School Alumni Association possess a common gratitude to the School for the time, talent, faith and education invested in them during their years as students to ensure that they would graduate to exercise genius within through developing a relationship with God, by engaging the world and by serving others. With the guidance of Blake Lloyd ’96, the Alumni Association Board worked with All Saints’ administration to extend our outreach efforts and encourage alumni to stay informed, get connected and give back to the community they love.
