The year 2012 saw a sharp decrease in the number of members as a result of which the activities were less,

but by the end of the term, the chapter managed to get the membership and the ISP – CELOS SPIE Student

Chapter saw full participation from the new chapter members. The Social outreach program, Industrial

tours, Saturday labs and Special seminars were organized throughout the year. Eminent speakers related to

field of Optics and Photonics delivered lectures on various topics. The annual event of International School

of Photonics “Annual Photonics Workshop” had been a great success. The success of Optics Talent Search

Exam has motivated us to conduct more such events in the coming future. The chapter president Deepak

Kumar Singh represented the chapter at SPIE Optics + Photonics '12 conference held at San Diego. The

chapter secretary Animesh Aaryan represented the chapter at SPIE Optics + Photonics '13 and also

demonstrated the “Optics Experiment and Simulation Kit” during the Optics Olympics.

The session started with a General Body Meeting on March 23, 2012. The new office bearers for the year

2012 were elected in the meeting. They are:

President: Deepak Kumar Singh

Vice President: Rajan

Secretary: Animesh Aaryan

Treasurer: Suneetha Sebastian

Staff Advisor: Prof. V P N Nampoori

Annual Photonics Workshop

ISP SPIE STUDENT organized a workshop with the focal theme “Industrial and medical applications of

photonics” in association with ISP OSA student chapter at International School of Photonics, Cochin

University of Science and Technology on February 27th and 28th2013.the inaugural function was held at C V

Raman auditorium at ISP at 9.30 am on 27th February. The meeting was presided over by Dr. M.Kailasnath,

Director, ISP and he welcomed the gathering. Honorable Vice Chancellor Dr.RamachandranThekkedath

inaugurated the workshop. Prof.C.P.Girijavallabhan founder director of ISP felicitated the function.

Ms.Priyamvada.V.C, Lecturer International School of Photonics thanked the attendees.

About 70 participants registered from all over India to attend this two day workshop. Experts from different

industries gave illuminating lectures on the applications of photonic tools in their particular industry. Dr.

B.Aneesh Kumar, Manager, Color Research Group, Akzonobel, Bangalore gave an invited talk on “Color

Technology: New Trends & Industrial Applications”. Dr. K.R. Suresh Nair, Managing Director, Innobreeze

Future Activities

1) Annual Photonics Workshop 2014

The Annual photonics workshop will be held on February 2014.Thechapter will co-organize the event with

help of ISP-OSA student chapter and theInternational School of Photonics. Interaction sessions between the

students and teachers will be highlight of this workshop. As a part of Annual photonics workshop we will be

Launching an Optics kit.

2) Optics Fair 2014

Various experiments were set up associated with lucid explanations. The students will be categorized

into three sections namely, kids section, High school section and Higher Secondary section so that

various age groups can be effectively handled. The schools will be introduced to the optics kit and it was

enthusiastically received by them.

3) Visiting Lecturer Program

Inviting the most renowned professors over the world through SPIE International to give a seminar on the

field of photonics, optics and photo-electronics to make students aware of the newest technology being

implemented and used worldwide.

4) Blood Donation

Despite advancement in modern medicine, there seems to be no substitute for human blood. The chapter in

association with ISP-OSA student chapter and Indian Medical Association is planning to organize a blood

donation camp. This will be done as a part of the social outreach program of the chapter. We hope this

activity will invoke a sense of commitment for the society among the chapter members.

5) Industrial Visit

Industrial Visits & Study Tour: Thechapter will organize visits to the nearby industries and research labs to

get handson experience for the members in various areas of R&D going on in the field of opticsand

photonics. These will be organized with study tours and leisure trips for thechapter members for refreshing

their minds from the labors of handwork. June is themonth fixed by the chapter GBM for the first trip in this

programme.

6) Optics kit

The optics kit-version 3 will be released in the optics fair. It is designed for gainingclear understanding of

concepts of the different optical phenomena and will bedistributed among different schools. The kit not only

provides the equipments likesingle slit, double slit, polarizer, lenses, mirror, laser, holographic grating etc.,

butit also comes with a handbook that explains the concepts briefly. Topics likepolarization, diffraction and

interference are explained. This will be extremely helpful for the students in understanding the theory. The

aim is to overcome the shortage of optical components in schools and to popularize optics. The optics kit

acts as a practical guide for the student. It was one of the major attractions of the Optics Fair.

7) Website

The chapter will host website of International standards, www.spie.in.The websitewill be developed

completely by SPIE chapter student for embellishing, framing, and putting the Chapter forcompetition. The

chapter website is a team work.

8) Placement Cell

To assist the chapter members to find good industrial and academic placementsafter their graduation, the

chapter will constitute a placement cell under thestewardship of the chapter’s former president. The cell

through its dedicatedwebpage brings out the career profile of aspiring graduates to attract the

necessaryattention from industries and higher education institutions.

9) Optics to School

This will be the prime activity of the chapter under the social outreach programme which will give thrust in

spreading awareness about the relevance of optics and photonics careers among school students

throughout the state of Kerala. To make this a wonderful reality, the chapter has constituted a production

unit to design various experiments and demonstrations to be presented to the schools and chapter team

visits. The basic principles of Optics will be explained through simple experiments. The students will get an

exposure to those experiments which they have read only in their text books. Thus they can have a real taste

of science. This unit will work in tandem programme committee and the publicity committee to launch the

activities in the coming academic year starting from June

10) World Environment Day

The chapter members will celebrate the world environment day on June 5th by planting a tree in the

campus and there by invoking a sense of care and passion for Mother Nature.

11) Sky watch

As the saying goes „the sky is not the limit‟ the chapter is going to establish sky watch programme to help

the public as well as the students to have a complete picture of the stars.

12) Raman Day Celebrations

November 7, Sir C. V. Raman’s birthday, the annual gathering of the students to remember one of the

legendary figures in the field of Indian physics and optics. The event was noted for its competitions such as

the Physics Quiz and Colloquium held for college and university students from South India and was

conducted on November 4 to 7.Attractive prizes including cash awards, merit certificates and books were

presented to the winners.

13) Open Lab Programme for Visiting Students from Schools and Colleges

Chapter members are always enthusiastic to demonstrate various experiments andfacilities at the

department to the students of schools and colleges visiting theUniversity from time to time. Students from

various institutions in the state arewelcome to visit the labs throughout the year.

14) Optics working model

The chapter has planned to make a working optics model to make it easier tounderstand an optics

phenomenon. It is planned to work out as a part of the undergraduate students project work.

Word of Thanks

The year 2012-13 has witnessed many activities throughout the year. This would not have been possible

without the effort and determination from all SPIE members. I, on the behalf of the ISP – CELOS SPIE

student chapter, would like to pass a warm vote of thanks to all chapter members for their support. Thanks

to Prof. V.P.N. Nampoori for his valuable suggestions. I would also like to take this opportunity to thanks

SPIE community for the all the helps and encouragements. Special thanks to Ms Tasha Chickovosky and Mr.
