ECONOMICDEVELOPMENTUniversity of Missouri

I hope the information contained herein will give you a glimpse of the width and breadth of the total economic impact and influence MU has

on our city, our region, our nation, and our world. We are in the business of opportunity. I encourage business owners, entrepreneurs, faculty and students to contact our office if you have an interest in learning more about

what MU can do for you in supporting your economic development efforts.

Greetings from the MU Office of

Economic Development!

The University of Missouri (MU) is a complex, billion dollar enterprise, with the following four missions: Research, Teaching, Service, and Economic Development. MU is a source of education and entrepreneurship, leveraging the state’s investment by over 10 times to create knowledge, innovation and discovery for a bet-ter quality of life for all of us.

MEDIA OF THE FUTUREMedia of the Future offers new ways to communicate, educate and market. Media of the Future draws on the MU School of Journalism’s century of international lead-ership in media research and hands-on training, along with other campus strengths in digital technologies, business, public policy, graphic design and writing.

ONE HEALTH / ONE MEDICINEOne Health / One Medicine offers unmatched opportu-nities for collaboration in animal and human health. MU is the state’s only major public research university with Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Engineering, and Human Environ-mental Sciences. MU has the Bond Life Sciences Center, Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions, and the most powerful university research reactor in the nation. That makes MU one of only six public universi-ties in the United States who can take medical research from the “bench to the bedside.”

MIZZOU ADVANTAGE ------------------------------------------------MIZZOU Advantage fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, staff, students and external partners to address and solve real world needs and problems in four areas of strength identified at the University of Missouri.

FOOD FOR THE FUTUREFood for the Future addresses the culture, economics and production of healthy, affordable food. The Univer-sity of Missouri is home to world-class faculty and state-of-the-art facilities, including more than 14,500 acres of university-owned research centers, farms and forests across the state. From creating a soy product that looks and tastes like chicken to developing drought-resistant crops, MU faculty are leading the way to creating “Food for the Future.”

SUSTAINABLE ENERGYSustainable Energy focuses on developing and dis-tributing renewable energy sources. The Sustainable Energy initiative works to actively address energy issues through the following means: MU’s Research Reactor, MU’s biomass power plant, research in biofuels, bio-mass and energy efficiency, and education (College of

Engineering). The initiative also examines policy and its implications, business models, environmental impacts and the cultural and social consequences of energy uses and production.

Business Success--------------------------------------------------------

Organovo, a company that prints three- dimensional human organs and tissues from a ‘bio-ink’ that is made from the patient’s own cells based upon a license of MU’s intel-lectual property, was named one of the top 50 innovative companies throughout the world by MIT’s Technol-ogy Review Magazine, along with Google and Apple. Organovo went public in February, 2012 with a market cap of $40 Million, and its stock reached a peak market cap of $500 Million+ within its first quarter after going

public. Current market capitalization is more than twice the initial market cap.the taste, texture, and mouth feel of chicken meat. They

have received two multi-million dollar rounds of venture capitalization from Kleiner Perkins, a silicon-valley based venture capital investor group as well as the Obvious Corporation, a venture capital group started and man-aged by the founders of Twitter, and they are selling product now through Whole Foods. Consistent with their license agreement to locate a facility in Missouri, Beyond Meat has established a national production facility in Columbia, Missouri. There is potential for 60 new jobs in five years.

MU working with the Regional Eco-nomic Development, lncorporated, were successful in attracting Beyond Meat to expand their company in Columbia. This company uses technology developed and licensed at MU to make a textur-ized vegetable protein that replicates

cant funding, including a $200,000 investment from the Enterprise Investment Program and a $30,000 contri-bution from the student led angel capital investment fund that is operated by an experiential learning course within MU’s Business School. EternoGen creates new gold-nanoparticle based fillers for medical bulking ap-plications that prevent infection and greatly reduce the inflammatory response.

EternoGen was formed based upon MU intellectual property developed by the MU Biode-sign and lnnovation Program with close faculty mentoring. EternoGen has received signifi-

SHASUN NBI, LLC - A joint venture between Shasun and Nanoparticle Biochem Inc. has been formed and designed to further NBI-29, a new gold nanoparticle-based radiopharmaceutical for the treatment of prostate cancer. The venture is based on intellectual property developed at MU and licensed to NBI. It has completed its pre-clinical phase and is moving into the FDA ap-proval process in collaboration between MU (lead) and KU Medical Center.

Global technology company IBM opened a technology service de-livery center in Columbia in 2010. MU was one of several collabora-

tors who worked to negotiate with IBM to bring the service center to central Missouri. IBM opened its doors with approximately 100 new hires and estimates average annual wage for the new jobs is $55,000.

Newsy.com, a video news service, is a good example of an MU Economic Develop-ment Partnership. Newsy works closely with the MU School of Journalism, and is the only video news service that allows users to compare news sources from around the world to see how a story unfolds. Newsy was the recipient of Missouri Technology Corporation assistance and has created quality jobs in the Columbia area since its inception. It was the 2013 winner of the APPY award for “Newsy for iPad.”

IDEXX RADIL – RADIL was founded in 1968 by Dr. Joe Wagner, a faculty member at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Over the past 4 decades, RADIL grew to become one of the largest entities in the country pro-viding research diagnostic testing services. In 2011, MU and the College of Veterinary Medicine agreed to sell RADIL to IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. for $43 million. This sale not only provides the College of Veterinary Medicine with programmatic resources, but also brings a new and valued partner to Columbia and the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor. Located at Discovery Ridge in Columbia, MO, IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., a world-wide leader in the animal health field, is

an excellent match for collaborate programs at MU and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Approximately 50 employees were transferred to the private sector and our local economy was stimulated with a new international company.
