2011 Annual Report
CORAZON DE VIDA FOUNDATION Ending the cycle of poverty and homelessness…ONE CHILD AT A TIME
MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER Dear Corazón de Vida Friends,
2011 was a trying year. The economy at the beginning of the year looked as though it was turning around so we were encouraged. Unfortunately, we quickly learned that that was not the case as donations and participation decreased during the first 6-‐7 months.
However, with your unrelenting support we continued to provided life-‐sustaining support for over 800 children living in 14 orphanages throughout Baja. Our monthly cross-‐border visits continued and volunteers provided the much-‐needed love and attention to the kids.
The focus on our education program paid off this year as an unprecedented number –fifteen– teenagers from various orphanages were accepted into college. They are so excited for the opportunity to completely alter the future of their lives and their communities. What a great accomplishment for all of you who have provided for their needs and have watched them grow from shy little kids to promising young adults.
This coming year, we will continue to build on our education program and quality of life improvements while providing life-‐sustaining support for our orphanages. We continue to be encouraged by all of the kindness and support we have received and wish to thank those who are helping us better the current conditions and brighten the future for the hundreds of orphans in Baja.
Un Abrazo,
Hilda Pacheco-‐Taylor, Founder
INTRODUCTION It is estimated that between 6,000-‐10,000 children are living and sleeping on the streets, begging for food and money, and suffering from malnutrition, sickness, and neglect in Baja, Mexico. Mexico has neither a foster care system to support neglected, abused, or abandoned children nor a welfare system to help parents who are unable to provide for their children.
Founded in 1994, Corazón de Vida (“CDV”) is a US-‐based nonprofit organization supporting Baja orphanages. It provides children in dire need the necessities of shelter, food, clothing, education, and healthcare-‐-‐as well as hope, compassion and love. CDV not only financially supports orphanages in Baja, but also provides assistance through frequent cross-‐border visits by board members, staff, and volunteers.
Founder Hilda Pacheco-‐Taylor grew up in Puerta de Fe orphanage in La Mision, Baja. She had a positive experience in the orphanage thanks to the financial support of American organizations. Corazón de Vida Foundation was born out of Hilda’s sense of gratitude and her desire to give back.
Our Mission To raise contributions in the form of money, materials, and volunteer work to support and empower the children of Baja.
Our Belief We believe that every child’s life is valued and holds the same potential, excitement, and opportunity as any other life. It is up to us to work together to make sure our care helps the orphans of Baja realize their full potential.

“Ending the cycle of poverty and homelessness….one child at a time.”
ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS Life-‐sustaining Support In 2011, we continued to provide life-‐sustaining support to our homes by funding food, water, heat, power, and gasoline. Our debit card process has proven to be a very effective system for quickly transferring funds to orphanages. We deposit money at the beginning of the month and receive receipts from the homes before more money is deposited the following month. This is the most efficient way for us to monitor the charges and match them with receipts. Funds for special one-‐time needs or emergencies are also provided this way.
This system provides much-‐needed flexibility to orphanage directors because they are able to purchase food and supplies as needed. For example, fresh fruits, baby formula, milk and eggs are purchased weekly, while other non-‐perishable items are purchased monthly.
ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS – CONT’D Quality of life Improvements In addition to providing life-‐sustaining support to orphanages, Corazón de Vida built relationships with church groups, clubs, schools, and other organizations that were able to implement facility-‐improvement projects as well as medical and dental projects with the goal of improving the quality of life for the kids.
“Dulces Corazones” is the commitment of CDV volunteer Ana Gonzalez and her company, Apple-‐Revolution. Six teen girls at one of the orphanages learned how to create premium chocolate-‐covered strawberries, cookies, nuts, and other delicious delicacies.
The girls also learned about inventory, taking orders, marketing, promotion, gross sales, and net profit. This is an example of what CDV and volunteers are doing to help orphanage teens generate income that can help cover some of the costs of their personal needs.
Local Tijuana dentist, Dr. Sandra Solis, made an orphanage “house-‐call” and performed 80 dental exams. This is a classic example of how working together on both sides of the border is essential in helping children in need!
ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS – CONT’D Education CDV generated funds to buy uniforms, school shoes, registration fees, school supplies, transportation costs, and more for many kindergarten to high school students. Over 500 of the 800 + students who receive support are currently in school. In 2011 we placed a strong emphasis on starting a “transition” program for young adults living in orphanages. The seeds of that program were planted along the way during our visits to the homes when we asked the children what they wanted to be when they grew up. Corazón de Vida made a promise to them that there will be the proper funds to support them though college or trade school. CDV has been conducting “Career Day” orientation events, and working closely with Baja’s State university, Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (UABC), to ensure the teens are prepared to attend a state university. "I want to help bring kids into this world.” Lorenzo said these
words at age 10, when asked about his future. He can now make his dream a reality – he is enrolled in Medical school and one day he will return to the orphanage that raised him and help the children there not only be healthy, but he can serve as a mentor and role model for those who will follow.
Thanks to CDV donors located in Los Angeles who made a commitment to Lorenzo to help make this dream come true.
We have many other students who have a promising future, and with your funding support, we are on our way to ending the cycle of poverty and homelessness.
Career Day – Career orientation for Jr. High and high school students from all CDV-‐supported orphanages.
ACTIVITIES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS – CONT’D Orphanage Volunteer Trips In 2011 CDV continued its monthly bus trips throughout the year. These sold-‐out bus trips brought volunteers to the orphanages to raise awareness and also to give the children the much-‐needed love and attention they deserve. The children look forward to these visits and it is a life-‐changing experience for our volunteers.
We are fortunate to be in close proximity to the orphanages we serve. We encourage our donors, sponsors, and volunteers to join us on bus trips to meet the kids and learn about all of the work we are doing to help them. (Public orphanage trips are scheduled on the third Saturday of each month.)
“Joining Corazon De Vida has truly opened my heart to new possibilities. Being able to go on an organized trip, not having to worry about anything besides spending time with the kids has been the most rewarding Saturday activity I've done thus far in my life. These kids only care for one thing, someone to hold and hug, someone to play with... someone who cares.” Alina G.
“Some of the visitors like to play the Uno card game with the teenagers. Other visitors get into energetic soccer games with the children. I prefer to bring books to read to the younger children like ‘Huevos Verdes con Jamón’ (‘Green Eggs and Ham’).” Bill P.
2011 TOTAL ANNUAL EXPENSES
Our Programs:
CDV’s support to orphanages covers three program categories:
1) Life-‐sustaining support such as food, shelter, water, and public services.
2) Quality of Life Improvements, like basic medical and dental services, construction, and facility repairs to ensure the children’s well-‐being and safety.
3) Providing support for educational expenses such as uniforms, supplies, and fees with an emphasis on higher education (universities and technical schools) as well as life skills needed to become self-‐sufficient, productive members of their communities.
We firmly believe that EDUCATION is one of the most important keys to ending the cycle of poverty and homelessness-‐-‐ at the same time we know that it is imperative that we cover the basic survival needs before the possibility of a better future can exist.
