Annual Report 2011-SKILL Foundation

• SKILL Foundation is an educational Trust registered in Mumbai with a branch operating in Patna. The

mission of SKILL Foundation is to develop life skills of the underprivileged youth in the country.

Through its many activities, the Foundation is helping the underprivileged children develop a well-

rounded personality to become employable and be able to seize the emerging opportunities in a vibrant

economy. The immediate requirement of the children of the lower end of the society in and around

Patna is English and Computers. The Foundation at the moment offers unique courses in English and

computers. The children are from the lowest strata of society. SKILL Foundation has also taken up a

challenging task of training the children at the government of Bihar orphanage ‘Apna Ghar’, as also

the delinquent youth at a Remand home at Gai Ghat, Patna. • The impact of SKILL Foundation on the society can be gauged from the fact that since its inception, in

a short span of 3 years, SKILL Foundation has seen a phenomenal growth in its activities and has

attracted an incredible response from the community. Our free English and nominally charged

computer courses have become a run away success, with children pouring in from all parts of the city

and the state. A number of them have obtained employment or admission in MBA, engineering and

other higher institutions including IIT. Unfortunately, constrained by the Foundation's limited

resources, we are compelled to refuse admission to many children on a regular basis. These eager

children are drawn to the Foundation because of its unique teaching methodology and positive

feedback from the Foundation's alumni, many of whom continue to be associated with the Foundation

as teaching assistants.

• The Foundation is running on the principles of collective leadership. Unlike some other trusts SKILL

Foundation is unique since two of the trustees Mr. Prem Verma and Himalay Verma are involved full

time in the day to day activities of the foundation.

• Foundation has developed a methodology to involve students in the management of its activities.

Some of the willing students are selected as Teaching Assistants (TAs). The TAs are involved in class

management, attendance of students, upkeep of the premises, maintenance of records of the activities,

documentation etc. On account of this special training the TAs become more employable and are able

to get jobs both outside as well as at SKILL Foundation. Furthermore, some students actually join to

get this on-job training for work experience.

• New trustees inducted into the trust Mr. T. Ashir - IBM,

Mr Binoy Kumar – Architect

• English Training: SKILL Foundation has developed a

unique Yogic method of English teaching. During the year

altogether 189 classes of English speaking were organized.

Every class at SKILL Foundation begins with a 10 minutes

session of Yoga which consists of Tadasana, Bhramari

Pranayam, Meditation and Prayer. Initial English speaking

training is imparted through the Nine SKILL Mantras

which consist of a set of triangles, which help the students to

practice simple sentences using nouns and verbs in the nine

tenses. At the end of the class the students have a short Fun

and Games session which has a bias to English speaking. English Class

• The four month compressed paid English course started last year, has picked up quite well and a

new course in the morning has been introduced from January 2011 to cater to the students who cannot

come in the evening.

• Mantra Chanting Classes – SKILL Foundation has unique Mantra Chanting classes which consist of

Kirtans, Bhajans, Mahamritunjaya Jap, Hanuman Chlisha, and

other mantras on every Saturday at 5pm.The role of Mantra

Chanting in educating the children and honing their creativity

can hardly be overemphasized. SKILL Foundation believes that

Kirtan is a method of using sound for focusing attention and

developing aural perceptions as well as expressing emotions

and therefore an effective tool for teaching a foreign language.

Kirtans organized at the SKILL Foundation are so simple that

even the youngest child can sing them. The children are hardly

concerned with what the song means but willingly join in.

These Bhajans and Kirtans set the children dancing and bring

out the best in all the students. It may be pointed out that our

Mantra Chanting class is all inclusive and intuitive in nature

where all the children in the class spontaneously join the

action.

• Library: SKILL Foundation has a very fine library. The

Library is open to the students on every Sunday between 12 – 2

PM for reading. During this period students are guided by the

faculty of SKILL Foundation especially as regards selection of

books. Dictionaries are made available to the students to help

them understand new words that they come across.

There are approximately 1120 books under the following

categories:

 English Fiction-129

 Non-fiction English, Fiction and Non-fiction Hindi-270

 Children Books-321

reference and index guide to the Britannica -15

of very good English movies which help the students in learning to speak correct English with

appropriate pronunciation. Thirty seven such movies were screened this year and the children of

SKILL Foundation took to them as fish takes to water.

• Visit to Bihar School of Yoga (BSY), Munger: As in past this

year also a batch of students were sent to the world renowned

Bihar school of Yoga, Munger for special training from 1st to the

6th

of August 2011. Mr. Prem Verma and Mr. Binoy Kumar

accompanied the students. During the visit they met to Swami

Niranjananda Saraswati and Swami Suryaprakash Saraswati.

They blessed the students. This year the batch was much larger

and consisted of thirty one students (21 Boys and 10 Girls).

SKILL Foundation observed a remarkable change in the attitude

and confidence level of students trained at BSY.

• Seva and Karma Yoga: SKILL Foundation Environment Council is a very successful activity for

providing the opportunity to do things as well as for teaching the benefits of Karma Yoga, Seva,

cleanliness, health and hygiene. SKILL Foundation has adopted about 10 streets in the locality which

is kept neat and tidy. The students of SKILL Foundation came every Sunday from 2 -3 pm, and took

up the noble work of cleaning the community. A special mega karma yoga event was held during the

Chath Puja wherin the entire locality was cleaned and decorated by the students of SKILL Foundation.

Also, the venue for the Annual Function was in the campus of the Sheikhpura Utthan Samiti,

Brahmasthan. Since the campus was very dirty, the students concentrated on the cleaning of this

campus of Sheikhpure Utthan Samiti, Brahmasthan. This karma yoga of the SKILL Foundation

students was very much appreciated by the people of the locality as also the guests in the Annual

Function.

• Quiz Competition is an important part of the curriculum of SKILL Foundation for developing the

speaking power of the children on every Friday, the students of SKILL Foundation had Quiz where

English speaking skills were tested. This has become a runaway success with the students. In view of

the enthusiasm of the students they have been divided into four groups viz. SKILL Panthers, SKILL

Leopards, SKILL Lions, SKILL Tigers and a running tournament type scoring is done. One of the

most important rules of this competition is that if any child speaks any language other than English, its

team loses two points. Quiz has been found to be a very good tool for removing the inhibition of the

students in speaking English freely. Apart from the fact that regular English training is given with

Laptop & LCD Projector, SKILL Foundation has started using power point presentation for Quiz

Competition which has generated a lot of interest among the students. This year the winner of the Quiz

class have now begun to sit in neatly defined rows and columns. In addition, they have started coming

in and going out in a single file which is very difficult for even the students who study in very good

schools. It may be noted that very few students from Apna Ghar have ever been to school and the ones

that do are a very small minority.

the class that is being conducted at the Remand (observation) home. We were teaching English to
