Letter from the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director  

As the old saying goes, ‘if there is one constant in life, it is change.’  Despite the uncertainty of a downturned economy, the LGBT Center of Raleigh has gone through some tremendous positive changes that made our community center stronger:

• Moving to our new location at 411 Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh. • Presenting OutRaleigh, the Triangle's first LGBT street festival. • Mentoring pride as a part of the third annual 'Raleigh Is Coming Out' events.  • Opening one of the largest LGBT libraries in the Triangle area. • Launching new programs, including N.A.I.L. (No Accidents In Life), Gay and Gray and 

the Transgender Initiative.  • Welcoming a new Executive Director. 

Change has made our organization stronger, and it also increased LGBT visibility in North Carolina as a whole. In December, the North Carolina Human Rights Campaign selected the LGBT Center of Raleigh to receive the ‘Trailblazer Award’ for the incredible work done in the short period of time that the Center has been open.    The future is bright for our organization, but non‐profits like the LGBT Center are always under constant pressure due to an increased demand for services from their constituents as well as the dynamic landscape of public and private funding sources.   It is our hope that you and yours will join us in the coming year. Despite the current economic conditions, we have continued to provide a safe and welcoming environment due to the generosity of people and organizations within the community. We want to thank our donors and especially our wonderful volunteers for the passion and hard work they put in every day serving the LGBT and ally community.

Programs of the LGBT Center of Raleigh Gay & Gray The Gay & Gray Initiative is a new program established to advocate for, and reach out to, the members of the LGBT Community age 50 and up. Our mission is to assist seniors with issues such as health care, legal problems, housing and inter‐generational relationships, as well as provide social interaction and reduce social isolation. 

Youth Programs Making it Better, ASPYRE Camp (A Safer Place for Youth to Reach Excellence), and GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) Networking all fall under the umbrella of Youth Programs. A ‘Youth Coffee Shop’ is currently under development to provide after‐school support to those in need. The Center is fully dedicated to a holistic approach to youth development; caring for the whole individual through programs that target both mental and physical health. 

NAIL There are ‘No Accidents In Life’. We each were put here as we are, to be fully who we are. By sharing our experience, strength, and hope with one another, we provide mentorship opportunities and positive examples for challenging life situations so that we may live confidently as we are. NAIL’s vision is to show HOW “It Gets Better.” Members of the group will have opportunities to see first hand how successful members of the LGBT community have been able to find their own successful journey.  This is a new initiative that was started in the last quarter of 2011. 

MClub M Club is a community building program for young gay and bi men ages 18‐29 in the Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill area of North Carolina. While it is a program of the LGBT Center of Raleigh, it is also part of the nationwide network of groups, the Mpowerment Project. 

Healthworks Healthworks is now the overall Health Initiative of the LGBT Center of Raleigh. Healthworks will continue offering programs and services that address community health needs of LGBT individuals in physical, mental, spiritual, financial, and environmental health. 

Library The Library’s mission is to provide access to resources for LGBT study and entertainment, and to encourage exploration of the LGBT experience in a safe and welcoming environment. The Center now holds over 1,500 titles and has attained national attention and recognition. 

RICO   RICO (Raleigh is Coming Out) was the inaugural event for the LGBT Center of Raleigh in 2009 kicking off the inception of the Center.  It was held in downtown Raleigh on Moore Square and was open to the entire community as an awareness‐building event. Each year the event has grown and now serves as a way to recognize leaders within the community.  In 2011 we added an award to recognize a ‘Rising Star’ in the community in addition to our Distinguished Service award.   

OutRaleigh OutRaleigh celebrates Raleigh’s LGBT community, families, friends and supporters in a family‐friendly atmosphere. The day‐long festival features a main stage performance area for regional and local musical groups as well as local dignitaries and speakers. In 2012, all of Fayetteville Street from the State Capitol to City Plaza will be closed to traffic for this annual event, allowing businesses and non‐profit organizations to set up vendor spaces to interact with the visiting public.

Community Inclusion Programs

Women's Initiative The Women’s Initiative of the LGBT Center makes sure that ladies come first. The program hosts social events, outdoor activities and family programs specifically for lesbian, queer, bisexual and the transgender communities.  

Transgender Initiative The Transgender Initiative is built around the idea of creating a communal, safe place for people from across the gender spectrum, along with their allies, to meet, gather and provide a supportive and welcoming social environment. 

Gay Parents Provides programming and social events of interest to LGBT parents and their children. 

First Fridays Every first Friday, the Center participates in the local Raleigh Art event. The Center is the only venue dedicated to showcasing LGBT and ally identified artists and craftspeople. 

Open Mic Nights Presented by the LGBT Center of Raleigh, Open Mic Night encourages all members of our community to come out and express themselves in any medium they feel comfortable. Targeted at youth and young adults, the Center hopes to create a dialog among all community members about the dangers of isolation and the empowering nature of open honesty. 

Bullying Initiative In Progress: This program is currently being designed to combat the issues of bullying and social isolation in the youth community. With the help of community partners, as well as Wake County Public Schools, the Center will be looking at different ways to add value and cultural competencies to current youth initiatives in the Triangle area. 

 

IMPACT METRICS

INCREASED FUNDING  The Center has seen increased funding from  local sponsors, including other non‐profits such as Crape Myrtle Inc.  

INCREASED CENTER USAGE Roughly 700 individuals utilized the physical center outside of programming. 

INCREASED USAGE OF PHYSICAL SPACE Different allied programs and events take place in the Center at least 5 days a week. 

INCREASED # AND DIVERSITY OF PROGRAMS AT THE CENTER Programs now span the diversity of our population, making sure each person has a home at the Center. 

INCREASED VISIBILITY AND HOURS OF OPERATION Our new location directly on Hillsborough Street provides for numerous walk‐in opportunities. Our hours of operation have also increased.  

 

DECREASE IN PARTICIPANT SOCIAL ISOLATION After being involved in The Center’s programming!
