Dear Friends

This year marks the 125th anniversary of North Bennet Street School. It has beena year of many accomplishments and celebrations.

Craft in America, a public television program featuring the work of theschool, was broadcast nationally and an exhibition of student and alumniwork at The Concord Museum was seen by thousands. A stunning show ofour graduates' work held at the WGBH television studios in May was thebest-attended and most successful Annual Evening of Traditional Craft ever.

These anniversary events were intentionally focused on the present andthe future rather than the past, but it is impossible to ignore the continuinginfluence of the school’s history on what we do now and how we plan forthe future.

One striking example of how history has influenced our current programsis the return of woodworking classes for public school students at the nearbyJohn Eliot K-8 School -- a program that first began in 1883 and continuedfor over 30 years until manual arts training was made compulsory in Bostonschools. We re-initiated the program this year because now, as then, themanual-arts do not have a well-understood place in public school education. From its inception, North Bennet Street School has championed the impor-tance of teaching hand-skills to young students as they develop their intellec-tual skills and begin the process of identifying their unique talents. We are

pleased to host the latest generation of EliotSchool students through this grant-fundedpilot program.

The theme for this annual report -- a snap-shot of the class of 2010 -- is a response toa photograph of students gathered outside39 North Bennet Street 100 years ago. Werestaged the historic photograph becauseimages, better than words, convey the inten-sity and energy that never fail to impress

and inspire the hundreds of visitors who tour the school each year. As youcan see from the group picture on the cover and the class pictures inside,we continue to enjoy a sense of community created over many decades bystudents who have found a home at North Bennet Street School.

As we work in the present, plan for the future, and appreciate the past, weare grateful for the myriad contributions of faculty, students, alumni, donorsand friends.

Thank you for making all that we do possible.

North Bennet Street School received nationalattention when it was featured in the new PBS series

Craft in America. The school was profiled in Process, theepisode that focused on what inspires a person to choosea career in craft and how one pursues that dream.

In August 2009, the school exceeded its goal toraise $300,000 for scholarships before the end of

the calendar year. The incentive to reach the goal wascreated by a generous offer to match the funds if the goalwas met. As a result of exceeding the goal, the matchingfunder increased the match by $50,000. The second goalwas met for a total of $350,000 in matching funds, bring-ing the value of the scholarship fund to over $1,000,000.

A new Furniture Design Certificate programcreated through the synergy of the extraordinary

and complementary strengths of two Boston institutions –North Bennet Street School and Massachusetts Collegeof Art and Design – offers a unique in-depth programfocused on the design and craft of studio furniture.

The 11th Annual Evening of Traditional Craft washeld May 18, 2010 at the WGBH Studios in Boston.

Guests viewed more than 65 hand-crafted pieces andother exhibits. Guests left with cookies in the shape oftools and a copy of the City of Boston’s inspiring procla-mation of May 17 – 23, 2010 North Bennet Street SchoolWeek.

Sixth-grade students from the nearby John EliotK-8 School returned to NBSS in the Spring of 2010

for instruction in woodworking, renewing the historic col-laboration between North Bennet Street School and theBoston Public Schools initiated in 1883. Due to the suc-cess of the program, plans were quickly made to expandthe program to include all Eliot School sixth-, seventh-and eighth-grade students beginning September 2010.

The work of some of the most prominent studiofurniture makers in the United States was shown

this March in a group exhibition of handmade furnitureat Gallery NAGA in Boston. In an unprecedented gestureof financial support, half the purchase price of every exhi-bition piece sold was donated to the school; this benefitgenerated nearly $10,000 for the school.

Beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, a newcollaboration with Bunker Hill Community College

allows credit for NBSS training to be applied toward aBunker Hill Certificate in Entrepreneurship or anAssociate Degree in Business Administration.

A juried exhibit of furniture, jewelry, musicalinstruments and bookbindings crafted by NBSS

distinguished graduates – titled A Dedication to Craft:North Bennet Street School at 125 – was held at the ConcordMuseum in Concord Massachusetts from November 13,2009 to March 21, 2010.

In May 2010, the annual student exhibit was heldin the historic former Old Corner Bookstore in

Boston’s Downtown Crossing. The exhibit was so successfulthat its one-month stay was extended to two…and thenthree months. Thousands of Bostonians and tourists hadthe opportunity to see the extraordinary work of NBSSstudents and learn more about the school.

Furniture makers across the country and aroundthe world converged on Boston in June 2010 for

the annual conference of The Furniture Society, an inter-national non-profit organization dedicated to advancingthe art of furniture making. NBSS played a prominentrole in the week-long conference, which was organizedby Richard Oedel (CF ’05), chair of the local conferencecommittee.

Addressing 95 graduating students and their familiesassembled at Old North Church on the occasion the

school’s 125th anniversary graduation, Edward S. CookeJr., Professor of History of Art, American Decorative Artsand Material Culture at Yale University, noted that“North Bennet Street School is a bully pulpit for craft,”and argued that the school’s enduring presence provesthe viability of craft in an industrial society.

With funding received from the 1772 Foundation,NBSS established Handmade Houses, an innovative

training program that involves NBSS preservationcarpentry students in the identification and preservationof buildings in Boston's neighborhoods. The school isworking in partnership with Historic Boston Inc. (HBI)to create a revolving fund focused on the acquisition, stabilization, redevelopment and sale of historically andculturally significant first period homes in Boston. Thefirst project, begun in Spring 2010, is the restoration ofthe 1804 Anna Clapp Harris Smith House in the historicJones Hill neighborhood of Dorchester.

Ten new lathes were installed in a dedicated spaceat NBSS thanks to the generosity of two donors –

Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association andthe Amelia Peabody Charitable Fund — both longtimesupporters of the school.

The first-ever three-month manuscript gilding andillumination course was offered in September –

November 2009.

FINANCIALS

TREASURER ’ S REPORT

North Bennet Street SchoolAugust 1, 2009 – July 31, 2010

On behalf of the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, I am pleasedto submit this financial report for the fiscal year 2010.

Once again, under the leadership and engagement of the administration andfaculty, the school realized a healthy excess of revenue over expenses. Incomerose 2.03% over the previous year, largely due to project and instrument revenueand gains on investments, which followed FY 2009’s investment losses. Otherrevenue categories continued the strong trend of recent years. For example, although contributions, gifts and grants did not match the spectacular level of2009, they produced $955,536 for the school. This number is particularlynotable given the nation’s on-going economic slump and the challenges facingnon-profit organizations around the country. Overall revenue totaled $4,278,639.

As in previous years, the school did not need to use income from its endowmentto support the operating budget (with the exception of funds for scholarshipsthat are taken annually from the endowed scholarship fund).

The school continued its rigorous, commendable control of expenses, whichremained within budget and rose 3.98% over FY 2009 to $3,735,168. The onlysignificant variance from the previous year was a 40% increase in general andadministrative expenses attributable to over $95,000 in restricted grant expenseswhich were offset by grant income for those programs. These expenses werelargely devoted to market research, the 125th celebration, scholarships, andspecial programs with Gallery NAGA and WGBH.

As a result of strong revenue and careful control of expenses, the School added$543,471 to its net assets, bringing the total to $5,645,156.

The Board expresses its appreciation to the school’s administration, facultyand students for their achievement of the positive financial results in FY 2010.

Sincerely,

Daniel S. Cheever, Jr.Treasurer
