Diverse cultures will converge and thrive on

the near Westside. Residents will help designand become fully vested in the project.

The revitalization will be fueled byinterdisciplinary scholarship, internationalconnections, and the seed capital andcommitment of Syracuse University. It willbe sustained by the residents, businesses, foundations, and the local government ofSyracuse.

A community of artists and innovators willbecome property owners within a cluster ofrenovated warehouses and new structurescentering in and around West and Wyomingstreets, creating a link between the NearWestside and Armory Square.

Many new and/or renovated homes will be

constructed for owner occupancy throughoutthe neighborhood. The historic architectureof this, the oldest neighborhood in Syracuse, will be preserved whenever possible.

New construction and neighborhoodplanning will demonstrate sustainability inurban design and serve as a test bed forgreen and clean technologies emergingfrom the Syracuse Center of Excellence in

    Environmental and Energy Systems.

The project will create jobs, home ownershipopportunities, and beautiful public spaces forthe people who live in the neighborhood.

A vital neighborhood association will bethe catalyst for creating bridges betweennew and current residents, students, andbusinesses involved in this effort.

This is a game changer, MarilynHiggins, president of the Near WestsideInitiative and an SU vice president, said ofWCNYs move. We are going to have thepublic broadcasting station of the futurein what was once one of the poorestneighborhoods in the United States.

Daino said he wants neighbors as well as

people who live further away to use thenew facility.

WCNY is a community asset, thecommunity owns it and we want thecommunity to use it, he said. We belongon a street corner.
