Annual Report2010-2011

Child’s Voice Overview

YEAR IN REVIEW2010-2011 has been an exciting one at Child’s Voice. Our Early Intervention Program (EI) has continued to grow and expand, serving over 40 families throughout the year. The School Program graduated 10 students to their neighborhood, mainstream schools along with many successes through the year. These included the rollout of the new Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, which is a school-wide, proactive, behavior management system that is designed to encourage essential social skills.

AUDIOLOGYThe Audiology Center at Child’s Voice continues to improve the daily education of students by allowing immediate, on-site attention to technical challenges as well as overall audiological support. Services are also provided to alumni and families outside of the EI and School Programs.

PARENTSThe efforts of our Parent Association continue through annual activities such as Dr. Seuss Day, the Pancake Breakfast and the monthly hot lunch. We are so grateful to the amaz-ing families and alumni families that continue to support their children, one another and Child’s Voice.

EVENTSWe celebrated our 15th Anniversary this year with our annual Gala. Attendees joined together to recognize the incredible growth Child’s Voice has seen in 15 years - having served over 120 alumni and over 80 current families.

In addition, the Golf Tournament, Monte Carlo Night and Walk4Hearing events increased the outreach of Child’s Voice while raising needed funds for the important programs provided to our students and alumni.

MARKETINGThe face of Child’s Voice continues to change as children learn and grow in our programs and move forward in their education. Along with the children’s faces, this year, Child’s Voice rolled out a new “face.” After a strategic process the new marketing and brand of Child’s Voice was announced this year.

OUR FOCUSOur hallways and playground are filled with laughter and chatter and exuberant play. Our award winning curriculum and great teachers combine to do what seemed impossible a generation ago: we teach our kids to hear and talk and sing and laugh. Our students and alumni have ambitions and these hopes and dreams are possible because of the skills they gain at Child’s Voice. Thank you for the support, whether it’s your time, energy or generosity of these or your financial donations. We couldn’t do it without you and the students will tell you, because...you’ll be hearing from us!

Early Intervention Program

The Early Intervention (EI) Program helps children with hearing loss begin the process of learning to communicate through listening and spoken language. A program built on research, science and hope, EI focuses on each child and their individual needs and strengths and works to make the best of the early formative years when speech and language development is most easily learned. The EI Program is critical to ensuring that every infant and toddler receives the proper services needed to learn how to listen and speak. Early action and intervention can lead to amazing outcomes.

• Children ages 0-3 years old • 46 families total served in 2010-2011• 26 families seen in their homes • 33 children attended the Toddler groups at Child’s Voice• About 75% of the children in the Child’s Voice’s Early Intervention Program progress to the School Program

The Early Intervention Program offers a great support system. A network of other families going through the same things. I’m so glad Bobby is in the (EI) Program and has the School to look forward to. He always had some speech, but now he has a huge vocabulary and he doesn’t stop talking! He’s hilarious when he talks too! - Jessica, Early Intervention Parent

The Early Intervention Program has played a tremendous role in helping our son work through his hear-ing loss and support his ongoing developmental needs at the same time. The program is very inclusive and not only does our child enjoy and benefit from attending, the teachers and administration make you feel like you are just as important and a part of the program as your child is. I can’t say enough about how happy we have been with every aspect of Child’s Voice. -Elizabeth, Early Intervention Parent

“The Early Intervention Program offers a great support system. A network of other families

going through the same things!”

School Program

The School Program at Child’s Voice offers busy, full-day programs to prepare children ages 3-8 for mainstream schools – and life. Grouped into two age groups PI (3-5 year olds) and PII (5-8 year olds) The School focuses on developing students’ language, speech, and auditory skills while maintaining academic success. Much like any school for young children, our students attend gym class, music class and take field trips. The hallways are full of laughter and stories as the children move between classes and the Centers. • 48 children served in 2010-2011

We will always be tremendously grateful for the presence of Child’s Voice in our daughter’s life. It is hard work, but she truly loves every minute of it! The teachers are so dedicated and clearly care about the children both in and out of the classroom. The environment is very supportive and focused on enabling each child to achieve at the highest level possible. Years from now, I am confident Child’s Voice will continue to hold a very special place in our hearts! - Irene, School Parent

I remember seeing the children in the “big school” and wondering if Eli would ever speak as well as they did. It seemed like an impossible feat. Now, we are thrilled with his language, listening and speaking ability. Upon first learning about his hearing loss, I stopped singing to Eli - I thought music would not be a part of his life. Thankfully, he loves music and sings songs he has learned in music class and the Learning Center! It brings tears to my eyes when I hear him singing. We are forever grateful to everyone at Child’s Voice. - Alison and Jon, School parents

“It brings tears to my eyes when I hear him singing. We are forever grateful to everyone at Child’s Voice.”

Mainstream Outreach Program

The Mainstream Program at Child’s Voice works to ensure that our graduates are prepared to excel in the classroom and engage with their peers. This is done by keeping the relationships built at Child’s Voice with graduates and fol-lowing their progress into their mainstream, neighborhood school. Our graduates have gone on to be very successful in their mainstream schools, to pursue joy in sports, music, art, science and social activities. These students are the perfect testament to the miracles that happen at Child’s Voice every day.

Alumni Testing 2010

DanGrace Hayden Lindsey, Mya & Miya

• 15 alumni followed in Mainstream school in 2010-2011• 2 classroom observations for each student• Parent education and support• Focus on education and self-advocacy skills.

Hayden entered first grade at Lincoln Elementary in St. Charles IL last fall. Because of his years at Child’s Voice, Hayden’s transition and integration to the mainstream has been seamless. The love for school and learning that Hayden gained at Child’s Voice has grown and expanded. Hayden continues to excel in his academic work and equally as impressive Hayden’s social and self-advocacy skills have improved as he has been able to put into practice what he learned at Child’s Voice. - Trent & Wendy, Alumni Parents

The Mainstream Program staff were of great help to us both in preparation to transition to the main-stream as well as tracking Max’s progress at our local elementary school. We also found the Mainstream Panel to be extremely helpful, offering us tips from the unique perspective of students with hearing loss and their parents. With this support, we have been able to troubleshoot and negotiate the challenges of educating a child with hearing loss in a public school setting. We’re looking forward to another great year - thanks in no small part to Child’s Voice! - Megan, Alumni Parent

“...transition and integration to the

mainstream has been seamless.”

The Audiology Center

We believe successful treatment starts with science. Audiology provides the foundation for interven-tion at Child’s Voice. The science behind initial and follow-up testing, continuous support and mainte-nance of equipment and overall audiological care allows the impact of our Early Intervention and School programs to go that much further.

The Audiology Center opened in May 2008 and focuses on monitoring and documenting the auditory status of children attending Child’s Voice.

This ensures that the children’s hearing performance is optimized and conducive to good classroom learning and the acquisition of spoken language, which is the fundamental building block to auditory habilitation.

Dr. Dawn Testing a student

Shiven

We could not have been more pleased with the Audiology Center. When her processors were broken, they were able to get us in the same day and Dr. Dawn went out of her way to determine what was wrong and …walked us through the various options. We left with the next best situation. The Audiology Center really saved the day for us. We plan to use it for our future appointments as it is closer to home, is easier to schedule and on top of that Lindsay gets to visit her old school. - Caryn, Alumni Parent

“The Audiology Center really saved the day for us.”

• 23 families transferred full audiology care to the Audiology Center

• 75% of our students have cochlear implants• Certified to provide services by the Depart-

ment of Human Services• 95 families served throughout 2010-2011

The audiology department at Child’s Voice is such an asset for our daughter. She is able to get her (hearing) aids checked out during the school day if she is not responding well to her teachers or therapists. It allows any issues that may arise with the hearing aids to be taken care of immediately instead of calling and waiting for an audiology appointment at her ENT’s office. I feel getting to see Dr. Dawn, as quickly as possible, allows for Abby to continue building her listening and spoken language. - Lisa, Early Intervention Parent
