History

Tuesday’s Child originated in 1980 at Chicago’s Children’s

Memorial Hospital as a family service developed by mental

health care and early education specialists to help families of

young children who had conflict-ridden relationships with their

parents. Many of these children also had significant emotional/

behavioral difficulties or developmental disorders. In 1984

Tuesday’s Child was established as an independent 501 c(3)

nonprofit organization.

Mission

The mission of Tuesday’s Child is to “help families establish and

maintain strong, positive relationships with their children from the

earliest stages and to help children, especially those at risk for

failure, to enter school ready to learn.” Vision

The vision of Tuesday’s Child is that all parents will help their

children recognize and achieve

their highest potential.

As we enter our 30th year of service, I am mindful of the thousands of families and children we have been able to serve. This would be nearly impossible to do without the support of foundations, corporations, Chicago Public Schools, Illinois Board of Education, and just as importantly, our individual alumni and donors.

Despite challenging economic times, Tuesday’s Child continues to experience substantial growth. We served over 900 individuals and families in 2009, a new record for Tuesday’s Child.

In the midst of a challenging economy, we are grateful for your continued support. I also want to welcome our new Board of Directors for 2010. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our work and relationships with our funding partners, as well as the families we serve.

Dr. Ramon Nieves Executive Director 2009 was another very busy and productive year for Tuesday’s Child. During the year, the activity level of the organization’s programs increased once again. We served more than 900 parents and children in 2009 and that is the ultimate measure of success for Tuesday’s Child– serving families. This level of service was possible because of generous support of our individual, corporate, and foundation donors and the continuing hard work of a highly skilled and highly dedicated staff.

However, 2009 was also a very challenging year. Like many organizations, Tuesday’s Child suffered from the continuing economic downturn and is especially affected by the ongoing budgetary woes of the state government which helps to support our critically important Early Intervention services. Tuesday’s Child staff and Board continue to seek creative ways of funding our programs in an increasingly difficult economic environment.

As Tuesday’s Child enters 2010, there is a change in the elected leadership of the organization. I had the privilege of serving as President and Board Chair for a number of years and believe it is in the best interest of any organization to change the elected leadership over time. Rev. Karen Hundrieser is the new President and Board Chair, and as I turn over to her the responsibility of leading Tuesday’s Child forward, I do so with supreme confidence in her ability to bring creativity and energy to serving the organization’s mission. The challenges are great, but the dedication and commitment of our leaders and staff, and especially the generous support of our donors and client families, will continue to be the engine for growth and service to the parents and children who need our services.

The approach of Tuesday’s Child is two-fold. First, children who are either displaying risk factors for behavioral issues, or diagnosed with a developmental delay, receive intervention in an inclusive environment. Second, parents receive training and individualized feedback

on issues pertaining to their children’s development and behavior.

Parenting Program Parents work on individualized behavioral and goal planning activities, with group sessions led by a Clinical Psychologist, and individual time with trained peer parent mentors. Both weekday and Saturday programs are available to address the needs of single parents, co-parenting situations, and the scheduling issues parents face when each parent is working. The Child Center The Child Center compliments the parent education programs by using the same developmentally appropriate, behavior management strategies taught to parents. Emphasis is placed on cooperating with the teacher, interactive games with peers, and play. The four areas of concentration emphasized and observed in the Child Center are:

♦ Socialization (ability to interact appropriately with others) ♦ Time on Task (ability to focus and concentrate) ♦ Participation (ability to cope with a variety of situations) ♦ Compliance (ability to recognize limits and follow directions)

Early Intervention Specialized onsite intervention of young children with diagnosed developmental delays, such as speech, physical, and social/emotional issues. Intensive parent training is also provided. Familias Felices (Happy Families) A Spanish-language parent training program combined with Spanish-language Child Center activities for children. Outreach Program Parent and staff training is offered to community organizations in workshop formats. These programs are offered in multi-week or one-day sessions in Spanish and English. Summer Camp The Camp provides children with the opportunity to experience educational field trips and camp settings while continuing to offer developmental intervention and behavior management. Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy Individual and group therapy programs for children who are exhibiting signs of speech/language delays, or motor skill delays. Complete Diagnostic Assessments Full evaluations by experienced clinical staff to determine a child’s risk for developmental delays.
