For any organisation, some years are rightly designated

landmark years. For TEAR Fund New Zealand our year ending

June 30th 2009 deservedly earned that recognition. It was a

year of many changes and new opportunities, and one that

despite the international recession, produced record income

of NZ $12,700,000 for our poverty ghting programmes.

    child sponsorship

This year TEAR Funds child sponsorship partner, Compassion, celebrated the major milestone of having 1 million children currently sponsored. Kiwis had a part to play in

this achievement by contributing close to 12,000 sponsored children through TEAR Fund. This past year alone 1,956 children were sponsored by caring New Zealanders.

    Anti-trafficking Projectimpacting lives in Nepal

    Christmas 2008 saw many New

    Zealand churches and individu-

als join TEAR Fund in saying No

    to child trafcking through our

    Christmas Focus appeal, The Lost

Children of the Himalayas. The ap-

peal raised more than $360,000 to

help our partner, Share and Care

Nepal, to implement a programme aimed at preventing child

trafcking and helping to rehabilitate trafck victims like

Maili Nepali. You can read her story on this page.

Kiwis have enthusiastically embraced TEAR Funds Gift

The added bonus is that Gift for Life is an easy way to

One of the amazing things about TEAR Fund Microen-

terprise is that from the day the loans are given they

are at work helping to set people free from poverty. Butwhats more, once one family is on its way to becom-

ing free, and the loan repaid, it is reused, creating a

continuous cycle of freedom for others struggling to

    overcome poverty.

Disasters occur regularly throughout the world but many

y under the radar of the Kiwi media. TEAR Fund regularly

responds to disasters that dont get a high pr ole without

launching an appeal. TEAR Fund is able to do this through

the generosity of supporters who give to our disaster

fund and through funds we get from the government. We

appreciate supporters who give to this fund as it enables

us to respond immediately when a disaster strikes.

TEAR fund has two regional ofces in the South Island, one

    Regional Reports

Advocates are integral to who we are at TEAR Fund and

the work we do at a grass roots level. Advocates have

chosen to partner with TEAR Fund to outwork their love

and support for the poor. To advocate means to speak

up for those who cannot speak for themselves; to stand

in the gap and defend the defenceless and those who

are suffering in the midst of unimaginable injustice

    and oppression.
