Thisyearourmovetoworkinginpartnershipwithotherservices,parishesandcommunities

continuedasweprogressedourfivestrategicdirections.

1. Buildasocialresearch-policy-advocacyunitofnationalstanding,bygrowing

JesuitSocialServices'capacitytoadvocatefromgroundedexperienceofJesuit

SocialServicesandothers.

2. FacilitatesocialjusticeleadershipacrossJesuitnetworksintheAustralianProvince

andnetworkwiththeJesuitsocialministryinternationally.

3. Strengthenservicedeliveryonanationalbasis,throughtheongoingenhancement

ofcurrentprogramsandthedevelopmentofnewprogramsinotherpartsofthe

Province,focussinginthefirstinstanceontheHolyFamilyCommunityinWestern

SydneyandthenationalJesuitvolunteerprograms.

4. Assessanddevelopeffectiveresponsestoservicegapsandemergingneeds.

5. StrengthenJesuitSocialServices'culture,infrastructure,andsupport

basetosustainorganisationaldevelopment.

AtBrosnanYouthServiceswehaveexpandedservicedeliverytonowoperateinallthree

MetropolitanMelbourneregions,withpartnershipswithotheryouthserviceorganisations

centraltothisarrangement.ThesuccessfultenderthatledtothisundertheVictorian

Government'sYouthJusticeServiceDeliveryModelrecognisedtheongoingleadershipof

BrosnanYouthServicesinsocialjustice.

TheyearendingJune2009wasayearofchangefortheBoardandthe

programsofJesuitSocialServices.

WefarewelledourChairman,PeterJohnstone,ourDeputyChair,Frank

CostiganQC(deceased),andourTreasurer,PeterTratt.

TogethertheseBoardmembersrepresentedacombinedtotalof33years

ofservicetotheBoardandalinktothebeginningsofformalised

governanceatJesuitSocialServices.PeterJohnstoneandFrankCostigan

weremembersoftheinauguralBoardofJesuitSocialServiceswhenitwas

establishedin1995.Ourthanksgotothosemembersandoursincere

condolencesgotoFrankCostigan'sfamily.

WehavefurtherdevelopedourrelationshipwiththeHolyFamilyparishinWesternSydney

andarenowworkingwiththeparishtodevelopsocialsupportservicesinthisimportant

geographicalarea.AsJesuitSocialServicescontinuestomeetourstrategicdirectionof

expandingtodeliverservicesonanationallevel,relationshipssuchasthiswillformavital

partofourorganisation'sstructure.

“Inallareaswecontinuetoevolveourservicestomeet the changing needs of disadvantaged and excludedpeopleandcommunities.”

WehavemovedfirmlyintotheareaofsocialenterprisewiththeassistanceofFederal

Governmentfunding.Aswecontinuetolookforservicegapsandemergingneedswehave

identifiedtheimportanceofenterpriseasamethodofprovidingrealandsustainabletoolsfor

economicandsocialinclusionformanyofthosewhomweworkwith.

WehavedevelopedafruitfulrelationshipwiththeNABwhichhelpsustodevelopthe

conceptofJustLeadershipandasuccessfulstarttoanextgenerationstrategyaswelookto

thefutureofourculture,infrastructureandsupportbase.TheNABhasalsoplayedacentral

roleinprovidingnewopportunitiestotheAfricancommunitywithwhomwecontinueto

work.

Boardmembers,volunteers,donors,theVictorianandFederalgovernmentsandthemany

“Aswegrowasanorganisationweunderstandmoredeeplythatourvisionof‘BuildingaJustSociety'isonlypossiblewhenallpeoplehavetheopportunitytoflourishandreachtheirpotential.”

DuringtheyearIwasfortunateenoughtohavetheopportunitytoattendtwointernational

gatheringsofJesuitsandtheirpartnersinvolvedinsocialjustice–oneinSpainandoneinthe

Philippines.Itisclearthatwhereverweliveandwhateverourwork,thedegreetowhichwe

understandthisandliveitoutthere,directlyinfluencesourcapacitytohaveanimpact–

locally,regionallyandglobally.BeingpartofthebroaderJesuitnetworkprovidesuswiththe

opportunity,butalsotheresponsibility,tojoinoureffortsforthegreatergood.

Wecontinuetodrawonourdeepstoryandheritagetounderstandourcurrentrealityandto

discernourfuture.Thispointsustokeepstrengtheningourfoundationalvaluesofbeing

welcoming,discerningandcourageous.Overthepastyearwehavespentconsiderable

timereflectingonthesevaluesandhavedeterminedthatandintothefuturetheywillbe

operationalisedby:anincreasedfocusonfosteringleadershipandbuildingcommunitiesfor

justice;embeddinglearninginallouractivities;boldlyinnovatingtocreatemore

opportunitiesforparticipationandbuildingthekindofworldweallwanttolivein.

Ithankourdonorsandsupporterswhohavecaughtourvisiontobuildajustsociety,

standingwithusinsolidaritywiththoseinneed.Ithankthededicatedstaffandvolunteersof

JesuitSocialServiceswhoworkwithpassionandresolveeverydaytobringthisvisiontolife.

The2008/2009financialyearhasbeenabusyandproductivetimeatJesuit

SocialServices.Wecontinuetolearnvaluablelessonsaboutthenatureof

injusticeandthefacesofpovertyanddisadvantageinthiscountry–andto

usetheselessonstodetermineourdirectionnowandintothefuture.

2008/2009hasseenJesuitSocialServicescontinuetoassessouractivity

andimplementarangeofnewinitiativesinlinewithemergingneed,our

strategicdirectionsandthechangingpolicyenvironment.Wehaveseen

growthinsomeofourmoreestablishedyouthjusticeprogramsunderthe

BrosnanYouthServicesbanner.WehaveseennewprogramssuchasHoly

FamilySocialServicesinWesternSydneytakeonnewandchallengingareas

ofservice.OtherprogramslikeAbbotsfordBiscuitshaveshiftedfocustostay

attheforefrontofserviceinnovationasenterpriseandsustainabilitybecome

priorities.

In2009JesuitSocialServicesextendeditsreachintoWesternSydneyandAliceSprings.From

thesecommunitieswhohavewelcomedus,andfromthosewhohavebeenworkingwith

them,wearelearningmuch.Newinitiatives,suchastheJustLeadershipBreakfastseries,

offerusnewrelationships,opportunitiesfordialogue,freshinsightsandpossibilitiestoactfor

justice.Thisnextgenerationstrategyofengagementwithyoungprofessionalsisopeninggood

frontiers.OurcollectivediscernmentasJesuitsatourrecentGeneralCongregationledusto

agreateremphasisatthistimeontheunityanduniversalityofourmission:weareonebody

withonemission.Althoughwemayhavedifferentspecialisations,everyJesuitorganisation

sharesinthisonemission.Wecollaborateacrossministriesforthesakeofafaiththatdoes

justice.

InAugustwegatheredpeoplefromvariousProvinceworkswhoareengagedinworkfor

justice.Internationally,JesuitsocialcentreshaveconvenedtheIgnatianAdvocacyNetwork.

ThenetworksbeingestablishedinAustraliaandbeyondhelplinkpeopleandorganisations

forthesakeofourcommonendeavour.LastyearweaskedJesuitSocialServicestofurther

developourvolunteerministryprogram.Theprogramisaformationprogramofthe

AustralianJesuitsdesignedtoplacepeoplewiththoseinneed.MayIcommendthe

opportunitiesthatvolunteerserviceoffers.

greatneed.Theirsisaministryofhopeandnewdirection.Icongratulate

theBoardwhoareallvolunteersfortheirprofessionalismandrigour.We

havebeenespeciallyblessedbytheleadershipofJulieEdwardsandsenior

managementwhosedevotionandzealisaninspirationtosomany.The

spiritofthemagisiscallingusnottosimplymultiplyactivities,buttoseek

tobeofgreaterservicetothoseinneed.Socialenterprisemodelsandcom-

munitybasededucationareresponseswhichshowcourageandcreativity

andpromoteeconomicinclusionandhumandignity.

JesuitSocialServicesisaworkoftheAustralianJesuitProvince,operatingunderan

independentBoardofDirectorsasanincorporatedorganisation.

AllDirectorshaveastrongcommitmenttosocialjusticeandto‘buildingajustsociety'.

Therearecurrently11membersontheJesuitSocialServicesBoard-theChairman,fourJesuit

AppointeesandsixOrdinaryDirectors.

TheDirectorsreceivenoremunerationfortheirroleontheBoardandacceptfull

responsibilityforthegovernanceoftheorganisation,inaccordancewiththeAustralian

CorporationsLawandcommunitystandards.TheBoardhasadoptedaformalGovernance

Charterandgoodcorporategovernanceisafundamentalpartofthecultureandbusiness

practicesofJesuitSocialServices.TheBoardsetsthestrategicdirectionandoversees

theperformanceoftheorganisationwiththesupportoftheNationalStrategicPlanning

Committee,GovernanceCommittee,RiskandFinanceCommitteeandFundraising

Committee.AnindividualDirectorwillnotparticipateindecisionmakingprocessesifany

potentialconflictofinterestislikelytoarise.

ThecompositionoftheBoardofDirectorsandtheperformanceoftheBoardisreviewed

regularlytoensurethattheBoardhastheappropriatemixofskillsandexperienceandis

operatinginaneffectivemanner.

NewDirectorsreceiveaninductionintotheorganisationandDirectorsparticipatein

anongoingdevelopmentprogramconcerningtheirrole,responsibilities,ourIgnatian

heritageandtheworkofJesuitSocialServices.TheBoardsupportsopenandtransparent

communicationwithstakeholderswhileregardingtheconfidentialityofclientinformationas

critical.

Withgraceandhumourhesharedgenerouslyhisinsight,intellectandwisecounsel.Frank

wasprobablymostwell-knownfortheRoyalCommissionheheadedbetween1980and

1984intotheactivitiesoftheFederatedShipPaintersandDockersUnion,followingconcern

overmountingviolenceandcorruptiononMelbourne'swaterfront.TheCostigancommission

exposedwhatbecameknownas“bottomoftheharbour”taxevasionrorts.Therevelations

eventuallyledtoaraftoflegislativechanges.

Frankchampionedarangeofsocialjusticeissues.AformerpresidentoftheAustralianBar

AssociationandchairoftheVictorianBarCouncil,FrankservedaschairoftheVictorianDrug

RehabilitationFund,chairoftheVictorianGovernmentSentencingTaskForceanddirector

andvice-chairofJesuitSocialServices.InhisroleasadirectorofJesuitSocialServices,Frank

wasaninauguralmemberoftheYSAS(YouthSubstanceAbuseService)Boardwherehe

servedfortenyears.

InMarch2007,theAustralianJesuitProvincialinvitedJesuitSocialServicestotakealeadrole

intheProvinceforitssocialministriesin:

“a)directserviceandaccompanimentofthepoor;b)developingawarenessofthedemands

ofjusticejoinedtothesocialresponsibilitytoachieveit;andc)participatinginsocial

mobilizationforthecreationofamorejustsocialorder.”GeneralCongregation34ofthe

SocietyofJesus(theJesuits)1995.

Theimplicationsofthisinvitationwereexploredduring2007andintegratedwiththethree

yearstrategicplanningprocess.ThisStrategicPlanservesasabasisforJesuitSocialServices'

annualoperatingplanning.

ThefollowingstrategicdirectionswereidentifiedbyJesuitSocialServicesincollaborating

withotherstobeacredibleeffectiveforceforsocialjusticeinAustralia:

1. Buildasocialresearch-policy-advocacyunitofnationalstanding,bygrowing

JesuitSocialServices'capacitytoadvocatefromgroundedexperienceofJesuitSocial

Servicesandothers.

2. FacilitatesocialjusticeleadershipacrossJesuitnetworksintheAustralianProvince

andnetworkwiththeJesuitsocialministryinternationally.

3. Strengthenservicedeliveryonanationalbasis,throughtheongoingenhancement

ofcurrentprogramsandthedevelopmentofnewprogramsinotherpartsofthe

Province,focusinginthefirstinstanceontheHolyFamilyCommunityinWestern

SydneyandthenationalJesuitvolunteerprograms.

trustsandfoundations.Wealsorelyonthegenerosityofdonationsfromthepublicand

receivesomefundingfromlocalgovernment,ourownsocialenterprisesandtheSocietyof

Jesus.

JesuitSocialServicesworkstobuildajustsocietybyadvocatingforsocialchange

andpromotingthehealthandwellbeingofdisadvantagedyoungpeople,familiesand

communities.Since1977wehavebeenstandingupforpeople'srights.Todaywecontinue

toworkinsomeofthemostdifficultanddemandingareasofhumanservice.

JesuitSocialServicesoperatesadiverserangeofprograms,andtogiveyouaninsight

intothisworkwehaveoutlinedsomehighlights.Wehopeyouenjoythissnapshotofthe

organisationandthepeopleweworkwith.

Formoreinformationaboutspecificprograms,policyandresearchdocumentsor

Highlights of 2008/2009

MagisJesuitSocialServiceswelcomedtwenty-fourvolunteersfromIndia,theUnitedStatesand

AustraliatoworkwithusinourCommunityProgramsinJuly2008.Theyoungpeoplewere

participantsinMAGiS08,anIgnatianProgramleadinguptoWorldYouthDay.

Just LeadershipTheJustLeadershipBreakfastSerieswaslaunchedinApril2009.Theseriestargeted

youngprofessionalsandemergingleadersacrosscorporate,communityandgovernment

sectors.Thethirstforjusticeandthedesiretomakeadifferencewasdemonstratedbythe

extraordinaryinterestandparticipationintheseries.Conductedinpartnershipwiththe

NABandincollaborationwithMallesonsStephenJaques,BPandtheCityofMelbourne,

thisbreakfastserieswasafirststepinanextgenerationstrategyforJesuitSocialServicesas

welooktoengagewithandencouragetheleadersofthefutureintheirquesttobuildajust

society.Anexternalcommittee,madeupinthemainofJesuiteducatedalumniwhoshowed

interestinexploringconceptsofleadershipineverydaylife,supportedthisactivity.

NAB Economic Inclusion ProgramAjointprogramleadbyJesuitSocialServicesinpartnershipwithNABandAMES,providing

workexperiencetoskilledAfricanAustralianswhohavenotbeenabletogainworkin

Australia.

Opportunity of a Lifetime

Sittingonthe34thflooroftheNationalAustraliaBank(NAB)at500BourkeStreetMelbourne,Emebetlooksoutoverthesuburbs.Shecan'tbelieveherluck.“Thisprogramisarareopportunityforme”shesays.

EmebetmovedtoAustraliafromEthiopiafouryearsagoandcompletedherdegreeinaccountingatRMIT.Forseveralyearsshetriedtogainemploymentinherchosenfieldoffinance.“Itdoesnotmatterwhereyoucomefrom,youshouldhavethesameopportunitiesaseveryoneelse.Tofindajobhereitisoftendifficult,”shesays.

EmebetisoneofthreepeopletakingpartinanexcitingcollaborativeinitiativeofJesuitSocialServicesandtheNAB.Thisproject,aimedatcreatingjobopportunitiesforskilledAfricanslivinginAustralia,involvesthreemonthsofpaidworkexperiencewiththebank. ThisemploymentinitiativewastriggeredwhenDeputyCEOoftheNAB,MichaelUllmer,heardFederalMPLindsayTannertalkaboutthebarriersthatmembersoftheAfricancommunityfacewhentheyseekemployment.ThisledtoJesuitSocialServicescreatingaprogramwiththeNABandAMES(AdultMulticulturalEducationService)toprovideinvaluableworkexperienceatthebank.

MikeDomannwhoheadsupGroupFinanceattheNAB,issponsoringtheprogramforhisdivision.Hesaysithasbeenanamazingexperienceforeveryone,includingthepermanentmembersoftheteam.“Ourpeoplehavealreadychangedtheirperspectiveonlife,”hesays.“Thereisagenuinepassionthatpeopleontheteamhaveshownforthis.Ihavehadpeoplesayingtomethattheyhaveneverbeenmoreproudoftheorganisationortheteamfortakingthisprojecton”.

Brosnan Youth Servicesisaholistic,integratedsupportserviceforthoseyoungpeople

exitingadultprisonsandyouthjusticecentreswhoareassessedas:highrisk/need;with

limitedsocialandfamilynetworks;unstableaccommodation;andexperiencingmultipleand

complexhealthproblems.Brosnanstaffdeliverqualityprogramsinamannerthatreflectsthe

OurnewYouthJusticeCommunitySupportProgramisanintensivesupportprogramforyoung

people,aged10-21,engagedwiththejusticesystem.Itrecognisesthatinterventionsfocusing

onreducingthelikelihoodofyoungpeopleinthejusticesystembecomingadultoffenders,

Asabarristerworkingincriminallaw,IhaveseentheimportanceofJesuitSocial

Services'work.Muchcrimeoccursbecausepeoplehavelostanysenseofbeing

apartofmainstreamsociety,withaninvestmentinitsvaluesandfuture–itisaby

productofthedesolationofthosewhohave‘fallenthroughthecracks.'

JesuitSocialServicesbeganasanefforttoreconnectyoungex-prisonersto

society,bygivingthemahomeandameaningfulexistence.Therearenowmore

prisonersthanever,yetfewgovernmentprogramstohelpthosereleasedtobuild

newandmeaningfullives.Thisandrelatedburdensstillfallonorganisationslike

JesuitSocialServices.Assomeonewiththegoodfortunetobepartofmainstream

society,IfeelaresponsibilitytoassistJesuitSocialServicesinthiswork.

Morepersonally,beingaCommunityPartnerisamonthlyreminderofthe

importanceofcommittingtothewelfareofothersandofourcommunity.Asa

communitypartner,contributingsomeofmygoodfortunetoothersthroughJesuit

SocialServicesisapriorityratherthananafterthought;itmeansthatJesuitSocial

Servicesdoesn'tgetwhatmightbeleftover,butreceivesanamountthattheycan

countoneverymonth.

quarterlynewsletterappeals.Wearedependentonthesedonationsforouroperations.Over

thepastyearwereceived$226,014.80fromourdonorsinconnectionwithournewsletter

orlegacytoJesuitSocialServiceshelpsbuildabettertomorrowthroughtheprovisionof

practicalassistanceandservicestothosesufferingextremedisadvantage.Thegenerousgifting

involved,theNABenteredthelargestcorporateteamandreceived$1,000towardstheir

effortsforJesuitSocialServices.

28thMarch2009.Attendedbyover460peopleandfeaturingWaleedAly,ayoung
