Civil War in Sri Lanka ----------------------------------------------------The ethnic/religious conflict between Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka remains unresolved. The bloody skirmishes that broke out anew towards the end of 2008 in the north-east of the island in particular reached a horrific climax in April. The victims are innocent civilians. Thousands are dying. At least 100,000 have fled their homes. The Salesians of Don Bosco have provided shelter to many refugees in their centres. Looking after hundreds of former child soldiers whom the Salesians of Don Bosco have taken into their education institutions repre-sents a particular challenge.----------------------------------------------------

Supported by the provincialgovernments of Upper Austriaand Carinthia:Capacity building in West Africa----------------------------------------------------Together with the governments of the prov-inces of Upper Austria and Carinthia, Jugend Eine Welt is helping the Salesians of Don Bosco in a project that has been running since 2008 to make their work in favour of around 25,000 children in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone as effective as possible. Jugend Eine Welt supports a local team as it plans, imple-ments, co-ordinates, networks, evaluates and adapts the activities in the various Don Bosco project locations with the aim of increasing the effectiveness and sustainability of Don Bosco‘s work still further. In the process, other agencies involved in issues of development policy benefit from the Don Bosco team‘sknow-how which is made available in the field of project management.

----------------------------------------------------

20 Years of Children‘s Rights----------------------------------------------------The agreement relating to children‘s rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20th of November 1989. In it, the fundamental rights of every child in the world are laid down. „Over the past two decades the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has brought improve-ments to the lives of millions of children,“ says Reinhard Heiserer, „but there is still a great deal to do. Every child whose rights are violated is one too many.“ Jugend Eine Welt is committed to ensuring that the rights of the child are respected all over the world.----------------------------------------------------

The „Erfolg für alle“ - Fund is One Year Old----------------------------------------------------The „Don Bosco Ethik fructus omnibus“ („Erfolg für alle“ or „Success for All“) fund launched by Jungholz Bank and Jugend Eine Welt celebrated its first birthday on 16 December. In its first year, this alternative financial product not only received excellent reviews but also achieved an encouraging growth rate of 3.35 per cent. www.donboscoethikfonds.at

----------------------------------------------------Donations to Jugend Eine Welt are Tax Deductible----------------------------------------------------As of 10th of June 2009 and as confirmed in a written notification issued by the tax office, donations to Jugend Eine Welt Austria made on or after 1 January, 2009 are tax deductible. This tax benefit is an additional incentive to private individuals, companies and founda-tions to continue, increase or begin their support of Jugend Eine Welt in future.----------------------------------------------------

2009 marked the 75th anniversary of thecanonisation of John Bosco, the „Father and Teacher of Youth“. To mark the anniversary, Jugend Eine Welt launched „Street Children‘s Day“.

The money they earn comes from cleaningshoes and selling sweets but often from break-ins and prostitution as well. They sell flowers, help on building sites and in restaurants andcollect litter – the children who live and workin the conurbations of this world. Whether in Quito (Ecuador), Mumbai (India) or Cape Town(South Africa), street children live in constantinsecurity. They are scorned by society, castout and have no chance of a genuine chilhood. Drugs and crime are part of their everyday life.

In 2009 Jugend Eine Welt launched „Street Children‘s Day“ to highlight the situation of these children and young people and to raise funds for projects run by Don Bosco in favour of street children worldwide. A „Street Chil-dren‘s Day“ information package was sent to parishes, interested teachers and youth groups at the beginning of January. The package included material for a service for children, general background information on the subject of street children and suggestions for cam-paigns. This material is also availableonline at www.jugendeinewelt.at.

Street Children‘s Day will be held on 31th of January 2010 and 2011.

“Football is the language that is understood byeveryone,” says the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano. Jugend Eine Welt’s EU education project “Join the Game - Champions for South Africa” takes advantage of this fact and the current wide-spread football fervour. For the first time in history the World Cup is being held on the African continent – which gives Jugend Eine Welt and six other Don Bosco organisa-tions from South Africa, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain and Italy a goodreason to take a look behind the scenes of glamorous soccer stadiums.

“Join the Game - Champions for South Africa” is a computer-supported adventure game that allows children and teenagers to see how the world in a township looks through the eyes of a street child. School pupils take on the role of visitors to South Africa who have the chance to actively make a difference and bring about changes. The game is an education project run by Jugend Eine Welt and six other Don Bosco organisations in Europe and Africa and funded by the EU. The fascination of football and the international interest created by the World Cup are used to convey a deeper knowledge and understanding of the problems faced by southern Africa.

Where does the moneycome from?

2009 was a really difficult year for our donors due to the economic crisis. Despite that fact funds from private donours have increased by 2,6% whereas public fundings increased by 3,1%.

Where does the money go?

As is clearly shown in the table, more than 82% of the available costs were allocated to project work and nearly 14% were spent on education and advocacy for development in Austria. 4% were administrative costs.

Fair Investment

It is not always necessary to donate moneyto give people in the countries of the Southnew perspectives. The loaning of capital orethically sustainable investment of one’sown capital are also meaningful ways ofhelping. We currently offer the following products:
