2.1 Activities to Increase Institutionalization

Newly designed Poster and Emailings for GSSSH

Standardized RA and TA policies We have defined the framework of Teaching and Research Assistantship duties http://gsssh.ku.edu.tr/teaching-and-research-assistantship

Teaching experience for Ph.D. students

As of Spring 2015, we started granting the privilege to selected Ph.D. students to take part in the undergraduate teaching experience.

The first student to benefit from this opportunity was our 4th year Archeology and History of Art Ph.D. student Lauren Nicole Davis who co-lectured ARHA 465: Data Management in Architectural History, Art and Archaelogy.

3 students have continued to benefit from this in 2015-2016 Academic year: - Elif Kubilay Econ Ph.D. (ECON 201- Intermediate Economics) - Ahmet Börtücene DTES Ph.D. (MAVA 207) - Oğuz Buruk DTES Ph.D (MAVA 424- Game Design)

2.2 Activities to Increase Internationalization Joint Degree Collaborations We continue to promote and encorouage Joint Degree collaborations. In 2013, GSSSH launched its first Joint Degree program in Ph.D. in Psychology with Tilburg University. Arzu Aydınlı, Ph.D. student in Psyhchology was the first student to be admitted to the program. The second foremost development was signing a Protocol with University of Amsterdam governing the joint supervision and awarding of 2 doctorate diplomas. We received YÖK’s (Higher Education Concil’s) approval to launch this program for our Ph.D. student in International Relations and Political Science, Aysen Ezgi Üstübici. Both students graduated from the Joint Degree programs in 2015. YÖK has implemented major changes on the Joint Degree agreements, as a result of which where we are no longer able to form individual agreements. Instead, the new YÖK rules allow for only but departmental level Dual/Double Degree agreementsonly. Furthermore, YÖK particularly requires that the both programs covered by subject to the agreement has to to carry the same or very similar program titles. Otherwise the agreement proposal is directly rejected by YÖK.

8

Despite these critical setbacks, we continue to promote Dual/ Double Degree Agreements under the new restricted YÖK rules and regulations. GSSSH students in Erasmus / Exchange Programs Thanks to the hard work of the Office of International Programs, GSSSH now has graduate student exchange agreements with over 90 universities around the world. Media Coverage of our students:

Habertürk 26.02.2016 Pınar Yelmi DTES PhD 4 The media coverage for Pınar Yelmi's research on "The Soundscape of Istanbul" and the interactive installation in Everyday Sounds exhibition at the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (RCAC) was released on several TV channels, newspapers, magazines, blogs and radio programmes such as CNN Türk, Kanal D, Habertürk, Zaman, Daily Sabah, Hürriyet Daily News, Timeout, Artful Living, TRT1 Radyo, Kent Radyosu, Türkiye'nin Sesi, Museumbuzzy and many other blogs. The Soundscape of Istanbul project aims to capture the important values of sonic culture and preserve them in the context of intangible cultural heritage. The Soundscape of Istanbul collection, which includes both audio files and visual material related to that intangible cultural heritage of the city, is publicly accessible in Koç University Suna Kıraç Library Digital Collections (http://digitalcollections.library.ku.edu.tr/cdm/landingpage/collection/SOI). This collection, which will continue to expand over the coming years, is the outcome of a research project and fieldwork sponsored by a Seed Research Grant from Koç University. The field recordings (and related visual materials) provide a representative sample of neighborhoods, from residential over historical to commercial, captured at various times of day/year in order to present temporal and seasonal changes as well. The project can be reached at https://soundscapeofistanbul.ku.edu.tr/.

27

With this project Koç University became associate partners with Europeana Sounds, a European Organization which aims to protect sound heritage of Europe and The Soundscape of Istanbul collection is now available under Europeana platform http://www.europeanasounds.eu/news/get-ready-to-discover-sounds-of-turkish-culture-and-daily-life-in-istanbul. The Soundsslike project was initiated in order to expand this sound heritage collection with public contribution. An interactive platform (http://soundsslike.com) was developed which allows contributors to upload their own sound recordings, and to collect and protect sound heritage of the city of Istanbul as a collaborative work. An interactive installation was also designed to emphasize the importance of the sustainability of cultural memory and identity, and to raise public awareness of urban sound heritage. This interactive installation offers visitors an opportunity to participate in the exhibition. Those who wish to participate can upload the sounds they have recorded in the city to the website http://soundsslike.com. The sounds shared by participants can be listened to both online in the website and in the exhibition area. The installation, which was designed by Asım Evren Yantaç and developed by Hüseyin Kuşcu, was presented in Everyday Sounds exhibition held in RCAC between 8 January - 20 March 2016.
