The year of a Summer Olympics is always the culmination of our work through a quadrennium, and 2004 did not disappoint. The Athens Olympic Games was an unqualified success and our New South Wales athletes made a significant contribution to the performance of an outstanding Australian team – producing our “best-ever” Olympic result. Of the 115 New South Wales athletes who represented Australia at the Games, 43 won medals in 12 sports and another 13 finished fourth. Brad McGee, Stephen Wooldridge and Graeme Brown (Cycling), Brent Livermore, Michael MCann and Jamie Dwyer (Hockey), Suzie Balogh (Shooting) and Petria Thomas (Swimming) joined our most successful Olympian, Ian Thorpe, in winning the ultimate prize of an Olympic gold medal. Congratulations to all our Athens Olympians! They represented us with honesty, dignity and courage – bringing honour to their respective sports, and incredible pride and joy to those of us privileged to witness their efforts. In support of the Australian Team, our fundraising committees extended their activities to achieve the target of $1.8 million. This was an impressive task given the “flat” economy, and was assisted by special events held in conjunction with the Athens Torch Relay journey through Sydney. Our appreciation is extended to Chairman John Conde and the members of our state and regional committees who worked so diligently to achieve such a successful result. The organisation of the Athens Torch Relay when it passed through Sydney on 4 June 2004 proved a challenging logistical exercise for the Olympic Council. Involving some 145 Torchbearers and 26 Escort Runners, the event generated significant goodwill and very positive publicity for the Olympic movement, the Athens 2004

Olympic Games and the Australian Olympic Team preparing for Athens. Thousands of supporters lined the Torch Relay route and attended the community celebrations. Of particular value was the opportunity to celebrate the Torch Relay and the Athens Olympic Games with the Hellenic community in Sydney. As a direct response to the passage of the Olympic Flame through Sydney, the Ryde Business Forum and students from 37 schools in the Ryde Municipality passed the torch from hand to hand during Olympic Week (21-25 June). This spontaneous display of enthusiasm for the Athens Games and the generosity of Andrew Hill, who voluntarily coordinated this activity, attracted significant media coverage and raised $33,000 in support of the Australian Olympic Team. On International Olympic Day (23 June) an Olympic Workshop was conducted for the recipients of the 2004 Pierre de Coubertin Award. Some 90 young people enjoyed the focus on the Athens Games and the presentations from our Olympians before receiving their Award in the Hall of Champions. A total of 300 students received the Pierre de Coubertin Award in 2004. In addition, a number of Olympians have visited schools to make presentations and to share their special stories of inspiration and endeavour. During the year Council effected some constitutional changes which primarily reflected the Constitution of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and amended the composition of the Executive to include one delegate from the Olympians Club of NSW. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the AOC, the NSW Department of Tourism Sport & Recreation and Macquarie University which has enabled so much to be achieved over the past year. The NSW Department of Education & Training also assisted with our educational initiatives and facilitated distribution of material to all primary and secondary schools. Going forward in the new quadrennium the NSW Olympic Council faces new challenges, not least of which is a reduction of operating funds from the AOC and the State Government. Consequently, our fundraising activity will focus on events in 2007 and 2008, working to achieve a target of $1.38 million; we have relinquished the role of Administration Assistant, (formerly held by Sally Bacon) until 2007, and retained our Executive Director, Beth Powell, part-time until 2007, when the position becomes full-time. In this way, we are optimistic that Council can fulfil the objectives of our charter in representing the Olympic movement in NSW and supporting Australian athletes at the Winter and Summer Olympic Games. We look forward to the support of our member sports as we face these challenges.


My sincere thanks to Beth Powell, Sally Bacon and the NSWOC Executive for their commitment and ongoing support in a year of heightened activity – on all fronts. I would particularly acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by Sally Bacon to the work of Council of the past four years. Her enthusiasm, high-level administrative skills and cheerful, cooperative nature will be missed by us all. From the Executive level we sadly farewell Elizabeth Jennison, who has decided not to seek re-election after a sterling mandate of three terms of office. We have enjoyed Elizabeth’s support and pragmatism and wish her well in the future. At our General Meeting in November, we bid farewell to Bob Elphinston, AOC Secretary General. Bob’s untiring support for our work and his dedication to the Olympic movement enabled much progress to be made. We wish Bob every success in the future and look forward to working with Craig Phillips, the incoming Secretary General. At the end of this quadrennium we also bid farewell to John Konrads as President of the NSW Olympians Club and thank him for his tireless efforts in providing reunion opportunities for NSW Olympians. John will continue with the Club as a Committee Member. Just as the Athens Olympics showed us that the world can pull together and “live as one”, sharing in the highs and lows of human endeavour, and rejoicing in the excellence of the human spirit as demonstrated by our athletes, let us look forward to the Beijing Olympic Games with vigour and enterprise. In 2004 the NSW Olympic Council enjoyed a full fundraising program and education schedule leading up to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games in August. In November, the much needed simplifications to the NSW Olympic Council Constitution were adopted by the AOC Board. I wish to thank the NSW Olympic Council President and Executive for their assistance with that important process.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Annual General Meeting was held in March at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in Kirribilli. Our thanks for the venue go to Executive Member, Olympian, and Yacht Squadron Member Geoff Davidson. Orders to Merit were awarded to John Conde and Michael Fletcher for their contribution to the Olympic Movement and the development of sport in NSW. Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Finn Sailor Anthony Nossiter accepted the award on behalf of Michael Fletcher who was overseas with his sport of yachting at the time of the Meeting.

Paul Riley of the Sydney Academy of Sport Talented Athlete Program was invited as the guest speaker and presented details of the program to meeting delegates.

FUNDRAISING There was a greater focus on fundraising for the year, as sporting, corporate and community sectors showed their support and enthusiasm for the Team. Our special thanks go to John Conde, Corporate Fundraising Committee Chairman for his leadership of this very committed group of people.

Corporate Committee member and Chairman of the Sydney Turf Club, Bruce McHugh spearheaded the organisation of a Race Day at Rosehill in January with proceeds going to the Athens 2004 Team Fund. STC Directors, racing enthusiasts and Olympians enjoyed lunch and the racing from Rosehill Garden’s Chairman’s lounge.

The NSW Corporate Fundraising Committee held a successful Fundraising Dinner in May at the Darling Harbour Ballroom. Over 600 guests came out to support the Team and participated in raffles and auctions. The fundraising reached target and the highlight of the night was a short concert by John Farnham. Not a person remained seated and many expressed their thanks for a very enjoyable night.

The Torch Relay afforded the opportunity for working with the community and corporate sector to fundraise for the Team. Under the stewardship of the Corporate Fundraising Committee, a committee was established to organise a breakfast function on the morning of the Sydney leg of the Relay, 4 June 2004, at the Sofitel Wentworth Hotel celebrating Australian Women’s contribution to the Olympic Movement. Special guests included the Olympic Flame itself, carried into the function by Olympian and former IOC member Susie O’Neill. Joining Susie were Cathy Freeman, Dawn Fraser, Raelene Boyle, MC Johanna Griggs and the Governor of NSW, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir. The function was a great success for the Team and in acknowledging the contribution of Australian women to the Olympic Movement. Our thanks to the group who organised such a spectacular function with a higher-than-expected fundraising result.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS REPORT


Brighton Beach where there was a gold medal fundraising effort, particularly with the auction of limited edition number plates. Our thanks go to the organising committee and Chairman Mr Costa Vertzayias for spreading their enthusiasm for the Team and the Athens 2004 Games throughout the Hellenic community of Sydney.

In the evening Team Sponsor Accor hosted a fundraising dinner at the Novotel Hotel Sydney Olympic Park where guests watched the lighting of the Athens 2004 Cauldron. Special guests included Kieren Perkins, Cathy Freeman,

and Steve Waugh. Many thanks to Team Sponsor Accor for the support throughout the year and for providing superb venues and hospitality staff for the Corporate Committee Dinner in May, the Torch Relay Celebration Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, and the Illawarra Dinner.

The Ryde Community showed its outstanding support for the Team through an event designed and produced by Ryde resident and Tennis Coach Andrew Hill. With the support and encouragement of Cathy King of the Ryde Business Forum, Andrew organised for an Athens 2004 Torch to go on tour to schools and business in the City of Ryde, realising a substantial contribution to the Team Fund.

The Illawarra Fundraising Committee held a very successful dinner at the Novotel North Wollongong Beach followed by a well-attended Race Day in honour of the Team. We thank David Morgan Williams for his tireless efforts to support the Team over three terms.

The Newcastle Lord Mayor, John Tate, brought the Newcastle community together for a fundraising dinner. The Newcastle Civic Theatre was transformed into a ballroom and a memorabilia auction and raffle raised significant funds for the Team. We thank the Lord Mayor, the staff of the Newcastle City Council and the people of Newcastle for supporting the Australian Olympic Team with such enthusiasm.

We are also extremely grateful to the Carbine Club for the donation of $25,000, bringing the total donation from the Club to $50,000 and to the Ryde Sports Foundation who held events to raise funds to make a donation to the Team Fund. Thank you to Jim Hull and the directors of the Club.

No fundraising effort can be successful and reach such a target without the support of many and we thank all those who dedicated their time to organise, support, and attend the fundraising events this year. Your effort is greatly appreciated.

PIERRE DE COUBERTIN AWARDS This year, the 300 NSW-based Pierre de Coubertin recipients were offered the opportunity to be Escort Runners for the Sydney leg of the 2004 Athens Olympic Torch Relay. A total of 16 students were selected from across New South Wales.

The two Australian representatives for the 2004 Athens Olympic Youth Camp were selected from 2003 Pierre de Coubertin awardees across all states and territories. Beki Lee from St Mary’s Senior High School (NSW) and Dean Pover (WA) were selected to attend the Youth Camp.


OLYMPIC ACADEMY AND PIERRE DE COUBERTIN PRESENTATION An Olympic Academy was held for recipients of the 2004 Pierre de Coubertin Award on Olympic Day June 23rd, immediately followed by the Presentation of the 2004 Awards. The Academy and Presentation were held at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.

The Academy program included a presentation from NSW Olympic Council President Helen Brownlee on the International Olympic Movement and AOC General Manager of Sport, Craig Philips gave a presentation on the Athens Games and the 2004 Australian Team. Students participated in workshops on current issues for athletes and organisers and also had the

opportunity of sharing the Olympic experiences of Russell Garnett (Handball 2000) and Robert Ivers (Judo 2000).

90 students from across NSW participated in the Academy and Presentation day and it was pleasing to see regional NSW so well represented with students from Dubbo, Junee, Quirindi, Richmond River (Lismore), West Wyalong, Yass and Yeoval as well as the Hunter and South Coast. The Pierre de Coubertin Awards were presented by Olympian and former Australian Swimming Chairman John Devitt and NSW Olympic Council President Helen Brownlee in the Hall of Champions with an audience of 194 parents and teachers. Thank you to all the students and their parents, carers, siblings and teachers who helped make the day such a success. Our thanks also to the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Department of Education and Training and to Macquarie University for support and funding of the NSW Olympic Council Award and Academy program.

I am extremely grateful for the support throughout the year of the NSWOC Executive members and wish to acknowledge and thank the President Helen Brownlee for her guidance and hard work. I also wish to express my appreciation to Sally Bacon and to AOC Finance Managers Suellen Thompson and Pauline Sydenham for their advice and assistance with the financial management of the fundraising program and in the preparation of the annual accounts.

The 2004 Annual Dinner on September 15th was certainly “the best ever” as NSW Olympians Club welcomed home the Athens Team.

More than 800 Olympians and guests filled the Grand Foyer of the Superdome on the evening of the Welcome Home Parade thousands of Sydneysiders saluted our team. M.C. Kieren Perkins was supported by Bruce McAveney’s brilliant interviews. Eileen Wearne (Athletics ’32) refreshed our memories about Clark Gable in L.A.

Deputy Chef de Mission Carlo Corsario (a.k.a. Campbell McComas) let us into the secrets of Athens behind the scenes while Shane Gould looked like she was in training for Beijing. Murray Rose movingly told our Athens Olympians how their new membership pin will affect them for the rest of their lives.

Thanks to the AOC, the NSW Government, and the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, the Club was able to host the Athens Olympians.

8TH ANNUAL SAIL DAY The skies cleared to give some very fancy boats another great sailing day at the beautiful Middle Harbour Yacht Club on November 21st.

Lee Schofield (handball ‘00) bought along a bunch of his team mates for some bonding and to try their hand at a different sport. Not surprisingly the winning carbon fiber racer “Inner Circle Rum” had Matt Helm and Lachlan Gilbert ( yachting ‘88) on board.

In the absence of any Munich Olympians, Lee nevertheless won the 1972 Dalwood Hermitage in the raffle. Olympians thanked their hosts over a hearty lunch at the clubhouse.

SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (a) Basis of accounting The financial report is a general purpose financial report which has been prepared in accordance with Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements (Urgent Issues Group Consensus Views) and the Associations Incorporation Act 1981. The financial report has been drawn up in accordance with the historical cost convention. The accounting policies adopted are consistent with those of the previous year unless otherwise specified. (b) Income and Expenditure Recognition Income, with the exception of fundraising, has been brought to account on an accrual basis and if not received at balance date is reflected in the Statement of Financial Position as a receivable. Expenses have been brought to account as incurred and any expenses incurred but not paid for at balance date are reflected in the Statement of Financial Position as creditors. (c) Fundraising The New South Wales Olympic Council Inc. raises funds on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. At 31 December 2004, the New South Wales Olympic Council Inc. (NSWOC) had raised $1,800,209 (2003: $996,218) of its revised target of $2,000,000 for the 2001-2004 quadrennium. (d) Income Tax The NSWOC is exempt from Australian income tax. (e) Cash Cash includes cash on hand and in banks and money market investments readily convertible to cash within 2 working days (f) Investments Investments are valued at the lower of cost and recoverable amount. (g) Property, Plant and Equipment Property, plant and equipment are carried at cost and depreciated on a straight line method over their estimated useful lives of 3-40 years from the date of acquisition. (h) Receivables

Receivables are from related parties and are recognised and carried at their nominal amount.

SEGMENT INFORMATION The NSWOC acts to develop and protect the Olympic movement in the State of New South Wales in accordance with the Olympic Charter and the Constitution of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. and to actively promote the fundamental principles of Olympism within the framework of sports. financial asset, financial liability and equity instrument, both recognised and unrecognised at the balance date, are as follows:

Bank Account - carried out at nominal amount and at bank benchmark rates. Accounts Receivable and Payable – are carried at the nominal amount, are interest

free and have no set repayment terms. (b) Interest rate risk The NSWOC has minimal exposure to interest rate risk in relation to the

recognised financial assets and financial liabilities at balance date. (c) Net fair values The aggregate net fair values of recognised financial assets and financial liabilities

at balance date approximate the carrying values. (d) Credit risk exposure The NSWOC has no credit risk exposure as there are no trade debtors at balance date.
