Dear Friends,

The 2011-12 school year was yet another excellent year for Trinity-Pawling. As you will read in the following pages, the School is financially secure with a growing endowment as we also spend considerable sums maintaining our campus.

The endowment stood at $31,992,000 on June 30, 2012 with a return on investment of 3.7% which placed us with the highest return on investment of any of the Founders League schools. We are, however, significantly less well funded than many schools. In addition, we raised $4,395,694 for endowment and capital. Our Annual Fund was the largest ever with a total of $1,482,366 raised for unrestricted and restricted annu-al operations surpassing our previous highest amount by more than $250,000. Total giving was $5,878,060 which makes this fiscal year one of our best. As I look to the

future, I am confident that we can continue to increase both participation and dollars. The leadership is in place as we plan the early stages of a capital campaign. The horizon is bright.

We opened nine of the new faculty homes during the year with the one remaining house due to be finished by summer 2013. The Coratti, McDougal, Kerins, and Hoffman families are very pleased with their new houses which have slate roofs, brick facades, granite counters, and geothermal heat and air conditioning. The one house which was occupied throughout the year cost a mere $781 to heat and cool for the entire year! Thanks to the leadership of Mary and Peter Rolla P’12, the student lounge, “The Cave” was completely refurbished. We now have a bright, modernized space with four flat screen televisions and a variety of furnishings for the boys to enjoy. The Maurice “Mo” S. Vaughn ’86 Baseball Field was dedicated in September and new lights in the Hubbard Gymnasium have been installed.

As faculty members at a boarding school, we all recognize that working hard is part of our job; our days never seem to end and blend into the night. Yet, each boy, each lesson taught, each practice and each game deserves the enthusiasm of the first day. And working hard means that we ourselves learn. Experience has taught me much in the past 41 years of teaching; I recognize how much more there is to learn from our students and each other. Former student Shayne Skov ’09 wrote, “Trinity-Pawling changed the trajectory of my life. I arrived immature and unaware of my potential as a human being. But the transformation I underwent was not the byproduct of the school itself, but rather the adults who involved themselves in my life.” Shayne was elected Head Prefect his senior year.

To everyone who donated and shares my love for the school, I send my sincere appreciation. Together we have created a school which nurtures young people and enables them to reach their potential. I am proud of all that happens at Trinity-Pawling and am excited by the prospects for the future.

Sincerely,

Archibald A. Smith III
