ABOUT THE VIETNAMESE ASSOCIATION, TORONTO (VAT)

Established in 1972 as a fraternal organization and incorporated in 1979 as a non-profit charitable organization, VAT has the following Mission Statements:

• To provide settlement and adaptation services to immigrants and help them integrate and participate successfully in Canadian society.

• To promote mutual understanding, tolerance and racial harmony among ethno-cultural communities. • To work for the promotion and preservation of the Vietnamese heritage and culture, and for the

enrichment of multiculturalism in Canada.

Hội Người Việt Toronto đã phát triển từ một tổ chức thân hữu khi được thành lập năm 1972 thành một tổ chức phi lợi nhuận và từ thiện năm 1979 với các tôn chỉ sau: • Cung cấp các dịch vụ nhằm trợ giúp người di dân mới đến ổn định và hội nhập thành công với cuộc

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for allowing me to be the President of the

Vietnamese Association, Toronto (VAT). This year was a very special year for our organization as we celebrated our 30th anniversary of the popular Lunar New Year Festival. As well, we also observed the 40th year commemo-ration of the Fall of Saigon (Vien Xu) at the Tet festival with a sea of yellow flags and scarves. We were honou-red to have the Right Honourable Prime Minister Stephen Harper as our special guest at the festival for the 2nd

time in the last 3 years. In the Prime Minister’s speech, he congratulated the Vietnamese-Canadian community for our contribution towards the Canadian society in the last 40 years. This year VAT successfully collaborated with VOICE Canada to settle the remaining stateless Vietnamese refugees from Thailand. Through our partnership both organizations worked diligently to settle more than 40 refugees in Toronto by finding them homes and jobs. I personally want to thank Mr. Do Kyanh, President of VOICE Canada, and his team for the great effort in helping these refugees and allowing VAT to be an integral part of the humanitarian effort.

Of course the work and mission of VAT would not be achieved without the great contribution of VAT staff and 13 board members. The VAT staff members, under the leadership of Executive Director Mr. Mark Manh Nguyen, are some of the hardest working people I have ever encountered. Many times they sacrifice their weekends with their families to help out with VAT activities and events, and for that I am forever grateful to them. Lastly, but not least, I want to thank all of our supporters and contributors from the community at large. VAT is a well-recognized organization because of our community members who are always there to either donate their time or money for many of our activities and events. I am saddened that I will be stepping down as your President, however I am heartened that our organization has never been stronger. I wish the new Board of Directors and Executive team a successful 2015 - 2016. James Nguyen – VAT President

Tôi xin nhân dịp này cám ơn quý vị đã cho tôi cơ hội đảm nhận trách nhiệm Chủ Tịch Hội Người Việt Toronto (HNV). Năm nay là một năm rất đặc biệt cho HNV vì chúng ta đã tổ chức Hội Chợ Tết Cộng Đồng với chủ đề 30 Năm Chu Niên và 40 Năm Viễn Xứ với một rừng cờ và khăn vàng ba sọc đỏ. Chúng ta hân hạnh được đón tiếp Thủ Tướng Stephen Harper lần thứ nhì tại HCT trong 3 năm vừa qua. Trong lời phát biểu, Ngài Thủ Tướng đã ca ngợi cộng đồng người Việt tại Canada về những đóng góp quan trọng vào nền kinh tế Canada trong 40 năm qua. Năm nay HNV Toronto đã hợp tác hiệu quả với tổ chức VOICE Canada để định cư những người Việt tỵ nạn còn sót lại ở Thái Lan. Qua sự hợp tác chặt chẽ, hai tổ chức đã làm việc tích cực để định cư bằng cách tìm chỗ ở và việc làm cho trên 40 đồng bào tỵ nạn. Tôi xin cám ơn anh Đỗ Kỳ Anh, Chủ Tịch tổ chức VOICE Canada, và nhóm các thiện nguyện viên đã nổ lực giúp các đồng bào tỵ nạn và đã tạo cơ hội cho HNV Toronto tham gia vào hoạt động nhân đạo này. Dĩ nhiên công việc và sứ mạng của HNV Toronto đã không thể thực hiện được nếu không có sự đóng góp to lớn của nhân viên Hội và 13 thành viên Hội Đồng Quản Trị. Nhân viên Hội, dưới sự hướng dẫn của Giám Đốc Điều Hành Mạnh Nguyễn là một số trong những người làm việc năng động nhất mà tôi đã từng gặp. Họ đã nhiều lần gác qua những ngày nghỉ cuối tuần với gia đình để phụ giúp các sinh hoạt cộng đồng, và tôi luôn tri ân họ. Sau cùng, nhưng không kém phần quan trọng, tôi xin cám ơn các thiện nguyện viên, những người đã ủng hộ, và quý vị hảo tâm trong cộng đồng. HNV Toronto là một tổ chức có tiếng tăm nhờ quý vị trong cộng đồng đã luôn đóng góp thì giờ và tiền bạc vào nhiều sinh hoạt cộng đồng. Tôi rất tiếc là tôi sẽ mãn nhiệm Chủ Tịch HNV Toronto sau Đại Hội Đồng Thường Niên 2015, tuy nhiên tôi rất vui là Hội của chúng ta chưa bao giờ mạnh hơn hôm nay. Professional Career: Worked at UPS Canada for 8 years as a Senior Account Manager with professional accreditations; CITT-Certified Logistics Professional (CCLP) and Certified Customs Specialist (CCS). Currently Treasurer and former Chair of the CITT Toronto Area Council (professional logistics association). Extra-curricular Activities: Co-chair of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year Festival 2013 – 2015.Former chair of the Toronto Area UPS Community Relations Committee. Volunteer experiences: volunteer with VOICE Canada as events organizer and fundraiser, mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel, serving the needy every Christmas day at Salvation Army, Mississauga Food Bank. Current occupation: Managing Director of Goals Business Solutions

• Phó Chủ Tịch Nội Vụ / Vice-President Internal: Khang Nguyen, B.Comm. Graduated in 2007 from Ryerson with a Bachelor of Commerce in Information Technology Management (ITM), and graduated in 2003 from Seneca College with Diploma in Business Computer Systems. Currently working at Transportaction, Leasing Services as a Business Systems Analyst. Currently serving as Board member of Vietnamese Association, Toronto. Acting Community Representative on the Asian Pacific Community Consultative Council for the Toronto Police Services. President of the United Vietnamese Student Associations, Ontario (2009-2011).Current occupation: Vehicle Maintenance Administrator/Process Analyst at TLS Fleet Management.

• Phó Chủ Tịch Ngoại Vụ / Vice-President External: Le Luong, B.A.

Le Luong is the Managing Director of Goals Business Solutions, a management consulting firm that specializes in project management, sales and marketing strategy, event management and logistics. Prior to co-establishing GBS, Le worked in the education industry at Fieldstone Day School (1999 to 2011) as the Director of Business, Director of Admissions and Director of Marketing and Communications and worked on a contractual basis for Toronto and Region Conservation on a contractual basis as a Marketing Associate (2012-2015). Le has successfully managed many regional, national, and international projects for high profile clients such as the Region of Peel, QUEST Canada, Toronto and Region Conservation and the Kingdom the Netherlands.

Le has served on the Board of Directors for the Vietnamese -Canadian Professional Association (2013) and is currently the Chair of Sikhs in the City Canada and the Vice-President of External Affairs of VAT. She was recently appointed at the VP of External Relations of the Canadian Multicultural Council of Asians in Ontario and the Communications Director for the Vietnamese Canadian Voting and Advocacy Association.

• Tổng Thư Ký / Secretary General: Tho Pham, B.Sc., B.Tech Graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor's Degree in Sciences: Life Sciences and in 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology: Process Automation at McMaster University. President of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto (2012-2013), Founder/Camp Master of First Step Camp (2012) and Vice President of the Vietnamese Canadian Federation (2012-2013). External Vice-President of the Vietnamese Association, Toronto (2011-2012), Assistant Camp Master of Len Duong Leadership Camp (2009), President of the McMaster Vietnamese Student Association (2004-2006). Current occupation: Manufacturing Engineering Technologist at Estee Lauder Cosmetics Ltd.

• Thủ Quỹ / Treasurer: Tom Tang, C.A.

A Chartered Accountant with a wide range of business and community work experiences. Professionally, Tom held numerous senior roles within a wide spectrum of organization, including Ernst & Young LLP, Loblaw Companies Ltd., Barrick Gold Corporation and was recently an Internal Auditor with the Ontario Government. Previous Volunteers involvement includes Board of Director and Treasurer of Ontario Museum Association, Board of Director and Volunteer Outreach for Asian Community Aids Services, Board of Director of York Community Services. Current occupation: Chartered Accountant.

• Ha Nguyen (2014 – 2017) Harry have spent his career in finance and accounting fields of the private sectors in both Montreal and Toronto areas at all levels of the organization. Harry was the Chief Financial and organizing member of the Kinh-Thuong Alumni Reunion in Toronto2006. A low key approach but a firm decision maker, he was active with the Vietnamese student association while studying toward his degree in Sir George Williams Campus, Concordia University 1980. Harry is now self employed and taking his times in volunteer works and personal hobbies.

• Kien Le, M.D. (2014-2017) He was schooled at the University of Toronto Faculty of Arts and Science for two years and subsequently trained at the Faculty of Medicine for nine years and further sharpened by an additional surgical year at UCLA. He served for two years as President of The University of Toronto Vietnamese Student Association. Also served the Canadian natives in Northern Ontario. Then a tour in the White Head camps in Hong Kong, infamous for detaining hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese boat people forced to return to Vietnam. He also worked in California and New York, and has returned home to Toronto. At this time he has submerged himself into his role as “Lang Duong Lao”- The Golden Village’s VP External Affairs, in the drive to construct a much needed multi-facetted senior residence for the Vietnamese-Canadian elderly in the GTA and vicinities.


• Nguyen Thanh Nguyen (2014 – 2017)

Graduated as an Electrical Engineer in 1970 at the Electrical Engineering School of the Phu Tho National Technical Centre in Vietnam. After graduation, he became lecturer at the same school for 12 years, until 1982 when he immigrated to Canada. From 1984 he worked for Panasonic Canada Inc. as a specialist in broadcast and security products for 24 years, until his retirement in 2008.

• Pha P. Nguyen, B.Sc.

Former Settlement Counsellor at Ontario Welcome House, School social worker at Toronto District School Board. Currently President of Parkdale Intercultural Association, President of Twinkle Star Non-profit home child care. Recipient of 15-year volunteer services award in 1992, 25-yearvolunteer services award in 2002, Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism in Ontario in 2005, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Current status: Retired.

• Phat Nguyen (2014 – 2017) Phat Nguyen graduated from the ARVN Infantry Officer Corps in 1974 and worked within administration and logistics. He left Vietnam and arrived in Toronto in 1982 as part of the Boat People refugees. Since 1988, he has been working for the City of Toronto and has been an active member within the Vietnamese Community in Toronto. He was the External V.P. for The Elderly Vietnamese Association of Toronto and now is the chief executive member of the Former Thu Duc Officer Cadets Association of Ontario for the second term.

• Tan Nguyen (2014 – 2017) Tan Nguyen was a former member of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). At the refugee camp in Pulau Bidong in Malaysia, he was appointed Chief of Security to help maintaining the orderly processing of refugees for resettlement in other countries. He was also appointed Head of Section 9 of the Baataan Refugee Camp in the Philippines for taking care of its administration duties. Tan Nguyen was former President of the ARVN Veterans Association of Ontario, former Vice-President of ARVN Veterans Association of Canada, and is the current President of the Committee for Democracy in Vietnam. For his long standing community work, Tan Nguyen has received numerous commendations, including from Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Senator Hai Ngo. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

• Thanh Tam Tran (2014 – 2017) SBTN Anchor/Reporter/Talkshow Host/ Scriptwriter for the last 5 years. She has covered stories from the local community events/festivals such as the biggest Vietnamese Tet Festival in Canada with the appearance of the honourable Prime Minister Stephen Harper to international events such as Help Victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Phillipines. Thanh Tam is also SBTN Canada producer from 2014.

• Thi Dang (2014 – 2017) Thi Dang has been volunteering for numerous organizations such as VAT, VCVAA, NCP Mississauga, UNICEF Toronto, United Way Ottawa, The Well, Zanzibar, Habitat for Humanity, etc. She’s a professional with a unique combination of work experience in real estate, media, education, medical, pharmaceutical, and hotel industry; with degrees in Public Relations, Information Technology, and Business management; currently working as a Real Estate Broker.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES IN 2014-15 / SINH HOẠT CỘNG ĐỒNG 2014-15

August 9 –The Vietnamese Association, Toronto (VAT) and the Elderly Vietnamese Association, Toronto (EVAT) jointly organized the summer picnic as an opportunity for the community to have a meet and greet with Senator Thanh Hai Ngo. The participants enjoyed Vietnamese foods, BBQ, children games, balloon animals, and exhibitors. The event had over 300 people attended. HNV Toronto và Hội Cao Niên VN Toronto đồng tổ chức buồi picnic cộng đồng mùa hè để đồng hương có dịp gặp gở, trò chuyện và giao lưu, với sự hiện diện của TNS Ngô Thanh Hải. Những người tham dự thưởng thức thức ăn Việt, BBQ, trò chơi trẻ em, thú bong bóng và các gian hàng triển lãm. Buổi sinh hoạt có trên 300 người tham dự.

November 8 & 9. VAT participated at the New to Canada Super-show and Information Expo in Mississauga to promote VAT services, build network, and outreach to newcomers. This was the first year the Expo was organized and there were over 30 exhibitors from various immigration and settlement sectors including nonprofit settlement agencies, immigration firms, and municipal and provincial government organizations.

November 15 – HNV Toronto tổ chức buổi họp cộng đồng với Bộ Trưởng Di Trú Chris Alexander tại văn phòng Hội ở North York. Ông Bộ Trưởng trình bày về sự thay đổi của chương trình di dân theo diện chăm sóc, luật công dân mới, và các đề tài khác liên quan đến chính sách di dân của Canada. Có sự hiện diện của TNS Ngô Thanh Hải, dân biểu Mark Adler, Ted Opitz và trên 120 đại diện và thành viên cộng đồng. VAT organized a town hall meeting with CIC Minister Chris Alexander at its office in North York. The Minister spoke about the reform to the Caregiver Program, the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act and other issues relating to the Canadian immigration policy. Also present at the town hall meeting were Senator Hai Ngo, MP Mark Adler, MP Ted Opitz, and over 120 community representatives and members.

NOVEMBER 2014 -MULTICULTURAL COUNCIL (CMC) POTLUCK BUỔI TIỆC GIAO LƯU VỚI HỘI ĐỒNG ĐA VĂN HÓA Á CHÂU

November 15 – Representatives of VAT board, staff and volunteers attended CMC’s annual potluck event to showcase Vietnamese costumes, food and cultural performances to other communities. Các đại diện HĐQT, nhân viên và thiện nguyện viên HNV Toronto tại buồi tiệc giao lưu hàng năm của Hội Đồng Đa Văn Hóa Á Châu để giới thiệu y phục, thức ăn và văn nghệ đến các cộng đồng khác.

NOVEMBER – WELCOMING VIETNAMESE REFUGEE FAMILIES FROM THAILAND / TIẾP ĐÓN CÁC GIA ĐÌNH TỴ NẠN VIỆT TỪ THÁI LAN

November 15 & 26 - On November 15 and 26, representatives of VAT, VOICE Canada, Phap Van Pagoda, Thoi Bao, sponsors and volunteers went to the Pearson International Airport to receive community-sponsored Vietnamese refugees accepted to resettle in Canada after a long period of living as stateless people in Thailand. Members of the Vietnamese community have shown tremendous supports through contribution at fundraising dinners, fundraising shows and sending donation cheques. There will be many changes to the life of these newcomers, but the most pressing issue that faced them was the Canadian weather with the winter rapidly approaching. Community members responded tremendously with huge donations of clothing, scarves, gloves, shoes, boots and household items either directly to VAT offices, or through religious organizations such as Phap Van, Xa Loi, Kim Quang, Hue Quang Pagodas, Mission of the Vietnamese Martyrs Church, Vietnamese Alliance Churches, and others. The refugees were deeply moved by this kindness and asked VAT to convey their gratitude to the community for such a generosity. Ngày 15 và 26 tháng 11, đại diện HNV Toronto, VOICE Canada, Chùa Pháp Vân, Thời Báo, các nhà bảo trợ và thiện nguyện viên đến phi trường Pearson để tiếp đón các gia đình tỵ nạn người Việt đến Toronto sau môt thời gian dài sống tại Thái Lan trong tình trạng vô tổ quốc. Cộng đồng người Việt tại GTA đã tích cực ủng hộ cho các đồng bào này qua đóng góp tại các buổi tiệc gây quỹ, văn nghệ gây quỹ, hay gởi chi phiếu. Sẽ có nhiều thay đổi trong cuộc sống của những đồng bào mới đến này, nhưng cấp bách nhất là đối phó với thời tiết Canada, với mùa đông nhanh chóng đến. Các nhà hảo tâm trong cộng đồng đáp ứng rất quy mô, tặng rất nhiều quần áo, khăn choàng, bao tay, giày, boots và vật dụng nhà bếp cho người tỵ nạn, hoặc giao trực tiếp đến văn phòng HNV hay qua các giáo hội như Chùa Pháp Vân, Xá Lợi, Kim Quang, Huệ Quang, Nhà Thờ Giáo Xứ Các Thánh Tử Đạo VN, các Hội Thánh Tin Lành, v.v…Các người tỵ nạn rất cảm kích trước sự ân cần này và nhờ HNV Toronto chuyển lời cám ơn đến tất cả quý vị hảo tâm trong cộng đồng.


DECEMBER 2014 – CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS GIFT DISTRIBUTION / PHÁT QUÀ GIÁNG SINH CHO TRẺ EM

December 13 – VAT organized a Christmas Gift-Giving celebration for the community with the support of CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. Senator Hai Thanh Ngo and Toronto City Councillor Anthony Perruzza joined us as special guests to celebrate the occasion. This year, we also had Vietnamese refugee families from Thailand join us for their first Christmas gift-giving celebration in Canada. There were also photos with Santa Clause, children games and activities, food, and balloon animals provided by HelpKidsToSchool Foundation. It was a successful event with over 200 happy attendees.

Ngày 13 tháng 12. HNV tổ chức buổi phát quà Giáng Sinh cho trẻ em với sự hỗ trợ của CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. TNS Ngô Thanh Hải và Nghị Viên Thành Phố Anthony Perruzza tham dự. Các gia đình tỵ nạn Việt Thái tham gia buổi nhận quà Giáng Sinh đầu tiên tại Canada. Ngoài ra còn có chụp ảnh với Ông Già Noel, trò chơi trẻ em, thực phẩm, và thú bong bóng do thiện nguyện viên của HelpKidsToSchool Foundation thực hiện. Buổi sinh hoạt thành công với trên 200 người tham dự rất hân hoan.

Ngày Chủ Nhật 1 tháng 2, 2015, Hội Người Việt Toronto và các hội đoàn tại vùng GTA đã tổ chức thành công Hội Chợ Tết Ất Mùi với chủ đề “40 Năm Viễn Xứ” tại International Centre với sự tham dự trên 10,000 đồng bào và các nhà lãnh tụ cao cấp của chính phủ Canada và nhà các lãnh đạo cộng đồng.

May 3. VAT participated in the Gala organized by the Canadian Multicultural Council (CMC). Mr. Hoang Thanh Thang (third from right), former VAT board member and currently President of the Elderly Vietnamese Association of Toronto, won the Pioneer Award for the Vietnamese community. HNV Toronto tham gia tiệc Gala do Hiệp Hội Đa Văn Hóa Á Châu tổ chức. Ông Hoàng Thanh Thảng (thứ ba từ bên phải), cựu thành viên Hội Đồng Quản Trị HNV và hiện là Chủ Tịch Hội Cao Niên Việt Nam Toronto nhận giải thưởng Pioneer Award cho cộng đồng Việt.

February 26. On the occasion of the announcement of new funding for the Seniors Community Grant (SCG), VAT Tai Chi group demonstrated to representatives of Parkdale community groups the benefits of Tai Chi exercise. VAT has implemented the Tai Chi training for 7 months under SCG funding. To encourage seniors to practice this useful exercise, Ontario Minister Responsible for Seniors Affairs Mario Sergio and MPP Cristina Martins (far left) joined the exercise.

Nhân dịp loan báo chương trình tài trợ mới của Seniors Community Grant (SCG), nhóm Tai Chi HNV Toronto trình bày cho đại diện các hội đoàn ở khu vực Parkdale về ích lợi của môn thể dục Tai Chi. HNV Toronto đã thực hiện việc huấn luyện Tai Chi qua 7 tháng dưới sự tài trợ của SCG. Để khuyến khích các vị cao niên tập luyện bộ môn thể dục ích lợi này, ông Bộ Trưởng Bộ Cao Niên Vụ Ontario Mario Sergio và bà Dân Biểu Tỉnh Bang Cristina Martins đã tham gia tập.

VAT settlement counsellors serve newcomers under the funding of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Programs include one-on-one counseling and monthly workshops on various topics such as employment assistance, citizenship test preparation class, income tax preparation information sessions, etc. In the fiscal year from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015, VAT staff served 8,965 client visits, an increase by 8% from the previous year. VAT staff also organized 99 workshops, information sessions and classes. This number is a decrease of 30% from last year, as VAT devoted more time for one-on-one counselling to meet demand, especially to over 40 Vietnamese refugees stranded in Thailand for more than two decades and were finally accepted into Canada under private sponsorship programs for humanitarian reason. VAT staff has helped these refuges and many other newcomers adapt to their new environment and found jobs suitable to their qualification and experiences. VAT currently provides settlement services in English, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog and Tibetan.

Besides the main funding of $631,696 from CIC during the fiscal year 2014-15, VAT also received additional funding from four other sources:

• Employment and Social Development Canada (HRSDC): $24,160 for the Computer Training Program for seniors.

• Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat – Seniors Community Grant (SCG): $9,030 for Tai Chi training and two networking trips.

• Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH): $19,983 for the Problem Gambling Counselling Program

• City of Toronto: $70,516 for the program to hire and train workers provided by Toronto Employment and Social Services.

HNV Toronto với sự tài trợ của Bộ Di Trú và Công Dân Vụ Canada cung cấp các dịch vụ định cư miễn phí cho đồng hương mới đến (chưa có quốc tịch Canada) như hướng dẫn và giúp điền các giấy tờ cần thiết, tổ chức các buổi hội thảo và lớp luyện thi nhập tịch. Trong năm qua, nhân viên HNV Toronto phục vụ 8,965 lượt khách, gia tăng 8% so với năm trước. Nhân viên HNV cũng đã tổ chức 99 buổi hội thảo và lớp học. Số này giảm 30% so với năm trước, với lý do phải dành nhiều thì giờ hơn để tham vấn cho khách, đặc biệt là cho trên 40 đồng bào tỵ nạn còn sót lại tại Thái Lan trên 2 thập kỳ, và sau cùng được chính phủ Canada nhân vào định cư thuộc chương trình bảo trợ cộng đồng vì lý do nhân đạo. Nhân viên HNV Toronto đã giúp cho các đồng bào này và rất nhiều người mới đến khác được ổn định cuộc sống và tìm được việc làm tốt, phù hợp với khả năng chuyên môn và kinh nghiệm đã có. HNV Toronto hiện giúp di dân bằng tiếng Anh, Việt, Quan Thoại, Quảng Đông, Phi, và Tây Tạng.

Ngoài nguồn tài trợ chính của Bộ Di Trú là $631,696 cho niên khóa 2014-15, HNV Toronto còn nhận thêm bốn nguồn tài trợ khác:

• Bộ Nhân Dụng và Phát Triển Xã Hội Canada: $24,160 cho chương trình huấn luyện cách sử dụng vi tính cho các vị cao niên
