2.14 Significant Activities and contributions made by IQAC:

1. The IQAC conducted orientation sessions for the faculty to facilitate internalising of a

quality culture. It also held periodic meetings with department faculty representatives

to accumulate and categorise the data pertaining to the various activities of the college.

2. IQAC monitors the functioning of ASAP and Walk with Scholar Programme. Our

college was recognised as a “Centre for Excellence” with 5 star rating in Training

Partner Scheme programme of the state run Additional Skill Acquisition Programme.

3. IQAC played an active role in strengthening the skill development initiatives of the

college by co-ordinating the activities of various clubs and forums.

4. Organized career camps in collaboration with institutions and companies; provided the

facility for interaction with industrial experts and well-known businessmen.

5. Prepared academic calendar and presented it before the staff council and general body.

6. Suggestions are made to make the continuous evaluation more effective by allotting

time to each student.

7. Special focus on value added education with assessments and awards.

8. Observed important international days and organized workshops and exhibitions.

9. Co-ordinated with the Library to provide various levels of orientation programs to the

new recruits and first year students.

10. Observed Women’s day and organized programmes related to women empowerment.

11. Community Development Programmes: activities related to Children’s day, AIDS day,

Swach Bharath Diwas and prepared Blood Group directory.

The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards

quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year *

Plan of Action Achievements

Faculty training- Orientation programme for teachers

Faculty Orientation Programme was conducted by Dr.

Antony Kariyil, the Former Vice-Chancellor of Christ

University, Bangalore, on 5th June, 2015 on the role of

transformational leadership.

Guidance given to the faculties to maximize their research

potential.

An extension lecture on training and research by

Dr.Sreekanth Swamy, Christ University Centre for Research.

One day workshop for internal mentors.

Administering various evaluation system in the college

Analysis of student evaluation of staff report.

Analysis of staff performance based assessment.

Analysis of reports on outgoing students and alumnae.

The data collation and management was centralized.

Cultural activities Monitored the activities of different clubs and associations

and encouraged them to sustain and enhance the cultural

ambience of the college.

Clubs such as arts club, music club, drama club, nature club,

quiz club etc conducted various programs and competitions

for the students to hone their talents. Conducted Campus

based TV shows in collaboration with television channels

such as Jaihind TV and Asianet Plus.

Career Guidance and Research Orientation

P r o v i d e d regular career guidance program for the

students by Commerce, Economics, Physics, Chemistry,

Zoology and English departments.

P r o v i d e d students interactive sessions with industrial

experts and entrepreneurs.

Conducted Research Writing Workshops for postgraduate

students.

Value added education

C o n d u c t e d regular programs (classes, role plays, group activities, etc.) on all 3rd Thursdays of the month for UG and PG students for strengthening the value system.

Proper assessment system was carried out and the best students were rewarded on the Merit Day.

Environmental awareness

W o r l d Environment day was observed with planting Saplings on the campus on June 5th 2015 separately by various departments of the college.

International Wetland d a y w a s observed on 2nd February with an orientation programme for the college. Wetland photography competition was also conducted.

Naambu-15, ‘Nadil utsav’ a festival was organised under the

Green Army to sensitise the students on the benefits of organic

farming of paddy.

International Soil protection Year was observed.

UGC funded Seminars

Four UGC funded national seminars.

UGC National Seminar on ‘Informal Sector and Conditions

of Employment in Kerala’ organized by the Department of

Economics on 10th March, 2016.

UGC National Seminar on ‘Informal Sector and Conditions

of Employment in Kerala’ organized by the Department of

Economics on 11th March, 2016.

UGC National seminar on “Frontiers in Chemistry” by the

Dept of Chemistry. Inaugurated by Dr Ravindran, University

of Calicut on 29th and 30th October, 2015.

National Workshop on Mangrove Conservation on 16th

October, 2015.

There were also district level seminars and workshops, lecture sessions and talk.

Activities designed to sensitise students on environmental issues

Observation of World Environment Day organized for the

whole college by NSS and Nature club on 5th June 2015.

Nature club in association with various departments of our

college organized a programme titled AGRO -VEG Garden -

15 on 14th July, 2015. It is aimed to educate the students about

the importance and necessity of growing organic vegetables in

our premises. Each department were separately allotted 30

grow bags each and different locations were demarcated and

allotted to the department.

Formation and inauguration of Green Army. An awareness

talk on Agri-Veg Farm Management given by Mr. Roy V.S,

Deputy Director of Agriculture (NWDPRA), and Winner of

State level best Deputy Director 2015.

Testing of water samples from various parts of division 45 by

the Department of Chemistry.

Paddy-planting festival under the auspicious of Green Army.

This was done in pursuance of the observance of International

Soil protection Year and to gain firsthand experience in

organic paddy cultivation.

In connection with the World wetland day, Zoology

department organized a Click & win spot photography contest

for students on 2nd February, 2016.

Harvest festival arranged by the Green Army at the end of

March, 2016.

NSS volunteers distributed 108 saplings the adopted village on

5 June 2015

Social outreach programmes

In association with Anti tobacco day our unit conducted a

public awareness rally (from College to Olari) highlighting the

harmful effects of tobacco and allied products.

The Department of Chemistry visited an orphanage for

Children on16th January, 2016.

Out-reach programme on Communicative English at L.P

School (St Aloysius School), Elthuruth.

Distributed 108 saplings to the households in the adopted

village on 5 June 2015.

21 NCC Boys and 23 NCC girls took part very actively in

Chief ministers “JANASAMPARAKA programme" known as

KARUTHAL-2015" on 4th June, 2015.

Dr.Radhika.T, Research Scientist, C-MET, Athani, delivered a lecture on ‘Women & Science’.

10th August 2015.

Ms.Anisha Kuriakose, Lecturer, Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur delivered a talk on

‘Gender Equalities on 10th August 2015.

St. Aloysius College Along With Janmaithree Police organized a session on women’s safety issues

and self-defence techniques for the 1st year and 2nd year under-graduate girl students

on 8th January, 2016 .

Organised training by WDC, Ms Anitha J, Kudumbashree, Thrissur on ‘Agarbathi Making’

on 5th February 2016.

A Session on International Financial Reporting Standards in

Association with International Skill Development Corporation.

A career oriented session on Entrepreneurial Motivation.

A Session on Japanese Management Strategies: Insights for

Career Guidance programme on ‘Earn While Learn’

One day cluster workshops for Internal Mentors, organized as

part of WWS initiative of St Aloysius College on 22nd

February, 2016 .

Training on Effective Leadership.

Yoga demonstration and training.

A daylong session by renowned career trainer, Dr. P.R.

Venkataraman on various career opportunities.

New add-on courses

UGC sponsored Add-on course-Television and Video

Production.

Another Add-on programme on Communicative English and

The Governing body, Management body and the College Council discussed the

details of the action plan and recommended the following:

The academic system to be upgraded by strengthening remedial classes in

order to maximize student success in examinations.

Community oriented programs may be strengthened and long term plans may be

To develop the job-oriented skills of the students, industrial visits and interactive

programs need to be organised.

Career guidance catering to the academic programs of the students may be brought

Our college offers Choice Based Credit Semester System (CBCS) for degree

and post-graduate courses as per the guidelines of University of Calicut. In the

affiliated status there is limited scope for flexibility of the curriculum. Even

though, flexibility is entertained in choosing Elective and open courses by the

departments concerned, no option is offered for core programs.

Our institution utilises a carefully designed feedback system to assess the teaching

excellence for every subject. The feedback and suggestions are reviewed by the IQAC and

necessary remedial measures are taken to enhance the teaching-learning experience.

1.12 How does IQAC Contribute/Monitor/Evaluate the Teaching & Learning

processes :

1. IQAC plays a crucial role in determining and structuring the detailed action

plan of the institution.

2. IQAC attempts to facilitate capacity building initiative of the institution by

conducting training programmes for teaching efficiency enhancement.

3. The collation and analysis of various feedback reports is carried out by IQAC ,

based on which recommendations are made to the faculty to enhance teaching

excellence.

4. IQAC regularly proposes suggestions to the principal which are reviewed and

implemented by the staff council.

5. IQAC encourages the use of ICT enabled teaching and provide guidance and

workshop to the faculties

6. IQAC offers assistance to the departments in chalking out department action

plans. It provides guidelines to the department to organise seminars and

workshops

7. IQAC monitors teacher performance after reviewing student evaluation of

teachers and provides suggestions to maximise teaching effectiveness of

teachers.

3.1 Initiatives of the IQAC in Sensitizing/Promoting Research Climate in the institution

. One of the major goals of IQAC of our institution is to systematise research and inculcate

a need to strive for excellence.

Research Wrirting : Dr Joycee O.J, Associate Professor, Department of English,

Vimala College delivered a talk on Academic Writing and New Perspectives in

Research.

Research methodology classes were conducted for PG and final year UG students.

Research project contest and presentation contest were conducted by several

3.26 Major Activities during the year in the sphere of extension activities and Institutional

Social Responsibility:

Our institution believes in holistic development of the individual which would be

incomplete without grooming them to be socially committed and responsible citizens.

Focusing on the requirements of the community, our students, belonging to various clubs

and forums, actively interact with different sections of the society.

IQAC co-ordinated with the NSS, NCC and various departments to carry out several extension initiatives for the community. NSS volunteers were in charge of several awareness campaigns on socially relevant issues meant for the development of the society.

“Padheyam”; a charity initiative of the institution that caters to the poor and needy at various places of Thrissur town, gave an opportunity to the students to be volunteers of compassion

Department of English launched a “Language Enrichment Programme” that

intends to develop communicative skills for school students from rural

background. Students from St Aloysius H.S.S, Elthuruth are given activity-based

sessions on basic communicative skills..

A special campaign against the drug abuse among youth and antidrug pledge was

taken on 26th June.

In connection with the World Blood Donors day, NSS and Red Ribbon Club

organized a rally to create awareness and to promote the noble act of blood

donation.

The students of the college have contributed Rs.25000/- and 2000 drinking water

bottles as relief measures to the Chennai flood victims.

Awareness program on organic Gandhi’s birthday celebrations, the College Swatch

Bharat Diwas was observed with farming by Nature club.

In association with Mahatma extensive cleaning and face-lifting programs in the

college on 2nd October. NSS unit and the department of Commerce jointly

organized a rally on Swatch Bharath Abhiyan.

“Run for Unity and Pledge taking Ceremony” was organized in connection with

Sardar Patel’s birthday (Ekta Diwas) on 31st October.

20 water samples were collected from division 45 of Thrissur Corporation and

tested in Chemistry laboratory on 18th November, 2015.

As the extension service of the college, an AIDS awareness program was

conducted on 28th November in the neighbouring 100 houses. The college

volunteers distributed leaflets in these houses and explained to them the

precautionary measures to resist the virus.

A workshop on making soaps and detergents was organized on 22nd January. It was

open for, all including outsiders. Around 50 candidates including UG students

participated.

A group of students from the Department of Chemistry visited Christina home,

orphanage for children on 16th January 2016. Students handed over toys and fruits

to orphan children and participated in various recreational activities.

We have a fully automated circulation system with bar-coded books and

scanner enabled transactions. We use computerised log-in system to monitor

the checking in of students.

The library provides access to various e-sources and is one of the top ten

institutions which use INFLIBNET frequently.

Computerised catalogue searching is possible in the library.

The digital display Screen in front of the library updates the student

community on daily events, exam notifications, announcements and

student/faculty achievements.

LAN facilities in departments, IQAC, library and administration office

facilitates easy functioning.

Our MIS, Aloysius Pupil Hub is an online repository of all student profiles,

attendance related records, mark lists, batch wise name lists, faculty profile

and feedback review.

5. Student Support and Progression

5.1 Contribution of IQAC in enhancing awareness about Student Support Services

The first year UG and PG students are given orientation programme in which they

are informed of the various aids and scholarship for deserving students.

Various scholarships have been instituted (150) based on merit and merit cum

means of the students .Details regarding scholarships, financial aids, concessions

are given in the college handbook which is made available to each student.

The class teachers of each department make sure that the students of their

respective classes are aware of all the student support services provided by the

college

Notifications regarding scholarships and student support services such as ASAP ,

Walk With the Scholar and Vocational Training are announced using the public

address system and are also displayed on the notice board.

IQAC assists the Equal Opportunity Cell of the institution in addressing the issues

of students from marginalised sections of the society.

5.2 Efforts made by the institution for tracking the progression:

Performance of students in internal examination, their attendance, achievements

and participation in co curricular activities are monitored by class teachers

MIS has been installed to enable effective tracking of student progression in the

internal exams conducted by the college

The PTA general body meeting is held twice every year and student, teacher and

parent interactions are arranged to discuss the progression of students in each class

Meetings of departmental and general alumni every year

Class teachers recorded the student performance at the academic and non-academic

levels.

Students on completion of their courses have been asked to be in touch with the

college through various e-mode facilities of the college. This enabled the college

functionaries to keep abreast of their current developments both in academic and

career fields.

guidance cell is functioning at the college. The career guidance cell conducts training for

group discussions and interviews.

IQAC focuses on fostering global competency and employability of students by guiding

them to perfect their skills in self-learning, technology based learning and soft skills etc

5.8 Details of gender sensitization programmes:

Inculcating the importance of gender equality and sensitising students on the need to

prevent gender bias are of utmost relevance in our institution. Department wise sessions

are organised to promote gender equity among students. These include invited talks,

Men Archery team secured Winners title in the Inter-collegiate Men

Archery Championship in Feta Round (Re-curve Bow) held at Christ

College, Irinjalakuda on 16th & 17thDecember 2015.

In Indian round Archery Championship the college team secured

Runners-Up title.

Mr Aarthish Aravind ( IVth sem BBA HRM) secured First position in

Individual Championships and he was selected to the Calicut

University team. He also participated in All India inter university

championship held at Punjab. Our girls team also Participated in the

same.

In 2015 Mr.Melvin A R (VIth Bcom Finance) was selected to the

8. Plans of institution for next year

A faculty orientation programme is scheduled in June 2016.

More field visits and study tours are planned in the coming academic year in all

departments.

The vocational programme coordinators are instructed to participate students in in

Gems and Jewellery exhibitions and galleries, to make visits to pearl culturing

fields, ruby, garnet mining and gem stone cutting and to schedule visits to higher

education institutions of technology and management.

Students are to have more exposure to practical experience of everyday science

like making soaps and detergents, vegetable farming and paddy cultivation, water

quality analysis, first-aid and so on.

Research promotion through seminars, lectures and awareness programmes;

training programmes in research report writing, script writing, finance market, anti-

plagiarism software and so on.

Promotion of learning through additional certificate and diploma programmes like

Diploma in logistics and retail management, Tally etc.

Practical inculcation of values in students through visits to prisons, homes of the

differently-abled, old age homes and spending a day with them staging cultural

programmes; by making students participate in blood donation camps and anti-

drug campaigns; by initiating them into nature preservation projects like planting

and protecting trees and preservation of wet lands for future; by making awareness

programmes in climate change and preservation of water bodies etc.

Significant suggestions received from the parents:

20% parents suggested that the college bus routes may be extended if there are sufficient number

of students who need them.

24% parents demanded for remedial coaching classes in English and basic mathematics for the

weaker students.

(iii) ALUMNI FEEDBACK ANNALYSIS (2015-16)

St Aloysius College, Elthuruth, Thrissur formally conducts alumni meet on the first

Sunday of December every year. This year we conducted the meeting on 6th December, 2015 at

our college auditorium. The program was inaugurated by the manager Rev. Fr. Jose Payapilly

CMI. The College Principal, Dr. Fr. Babu K T presided over the function.

Alumni meets have always been occasions to strengthen the warm relations the college

maintains with its former students. This meet is also an occasion to get feedback from our Alumni.

Most participants have maintained regular contact with the faculty and were updated about various

events in the college. Many of the Alumni members who attended the meet had already registered

in our college All of them expressed their willingness to support the college in all its future

endeavours. There were suggestions from the side of the alumni to develop a greener ambience to

the quadrangle. The other responses made by our alumni are summarized in the following bar

diagram.

o St Aloysius Social Awareness Programmes :- Guiding young individuals to be

socially responsible citizens has been one of the significant missions of the

institution. Understanding the power of awareness and the sensitising programmes

in causing social progress, our institution grooms students to be agents of social

change by providing them with ample opportunities to create public awareness on

socially relevant issues. NSS, NCC, Red Ribbon Cub, Women Cell carry out

numerous campaign to create awareness on AIDS Prevention, Organic

o Creating Community awareness on viral diseases like bird flu prevalent in different

seasons in the locality.

o Visiting old age homes and the homes of the invalids like ‘AMHA’ and organising

cultural programmes and making donations in cash and kind to the inmates.

o Green Army :Green Army is an initiative of our college which intends to promote

sustainable living through organic farming. It intends to develop awareness and

participation of students in ecologically sustainable modes of living. Headed by the

Green Army , students cultivate organic vegetables in the plot allotted for

vegetable garden. In this context, a Nadil Utsav – Naambu 2015 was also

organised to give a firsthand experience of Paddy cultivation

o Harvest festival arranged by the Green Army at the end of March, 2016

o Observation of World Environment Day by planting saplings in the campus which

were allotted to various departments for watering and upkeep.

NCC REPORT (2015-2016)

The NCC Unit of St Aloysius College comprises of 2 companies 5th Company

and 3rd company under 24 Kerala Battalion NCC, Thrissur has 54 Senior Division

(BOYS) Cadets and 52 Senior Wing (Girls) Cadets. Lt. Jaison Jacob and Lt. Dheena T A

are the NCC officers of this Unit. SUO Gabriel Thomas, JUO Clinto Raj, JUO Bibin P K ,

CSM Vishnu Vijayakumar and CQMS Jithin Thampi were the main student officers of

Delna Francis and CQMS Sangeetha D were the officers of the SW wing.

It is a matter of great pride and honour for this Unit, that we have been

producing Cadets par excellence, and unmatched by any other Unit in Thrissur, as

well as the whole of Kerala. In the span of the last Six years, 5 SD Cadets and 3 SW

cadet (This year Aiswarya B and Gopika ) have been selected for the Prestigious

Republic Day Camp at New Delhi, and 3 have further heightened their achievements

and the glory of this Unit by being selected to Represent India in the Youth Exchange

Programme Initiative of the Ministry of Defence at Russia(2) and Singapore(1). We

are confident to boast that only this Institution has had this high distinction.

ACTIVITIES OF NCC UNIT IN OUR COLLEGE

1. Independence Day & Republic Day Celebrations: The Principal, Fr. Dr.

Babu.K.T, inaugurated and delivered message on the Independence Day

celebration on August 15 and the Republic Day celebration on January 26.

NCC officers and all the NCC Cadets Participated on that great occasions. This

Year, our SD and SW Cadets both secured the 2nd Place in the Republic Day

Parade at Swaraj Round, Thrissur.

2. Social Programmes: Cadets took part in the cleaning programme held in the

Campus as a part of CLEAN INDIA CAMPAIGN on 2nd October 2014. In

association with Anti tobacco day (12th October , 2016) our unit conducted a

public awarenss rally highlighting the harmful effects of tobacco and allied

products. The principal flag Offed the rally. Our unit took active participation

in the public awareness rally conducted by Forest – Wild life Department,

Govt. Of Kerala which enlightened the public about the need to safeguard and

protect our trees and animals for the future generation. Our cadets

contributed 2000 liters of drinking water towards the flood relief programme

in association with the Mathrubhumi. Our unit conducted a programme on 6th

Jan 2016 to honour our great soldiers who laid their lifes for our country in

the pathankote terrorists attack.

3. Institutional Training: With a vast expanse of outdoor play area, this campus

is Ideal for cadets to develop their Physical Prowess. The cadets are trained

by Instructors from 24(K) Bn NCC, Thrissur, who are regular Junior

Commissioned Officers of The Indian Army. The cadets are instructed in

Marching, Firing, Map Reading and Infantry Weapons. Lecture Classes on

Armed Forces, Field and Battle Craft, Military History and Leadership are

delivered regularly. The LCD Projectors provided in the classrooms enhance

the learning experience of the Cadets. The Institutional Training for a year

consists of 20 Classes on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. Cadets are provided

with refreshment.

4. Annual Training Camp: Inorder to enhance the physical and mental

prowess of cadets Annual Training Camps are conducted twice a year during

Onam and Christmas Holidays. This year Onam camp was held at SDVHSS

peramangalam during Onam holidays and Christmas camp was held at GPTC

kunnamkulam during Christmas holidays. 40 cadets attended ATC during

Onam and Christmas espectively.

5. National Integration Camps: National Integration- The feeling of

togetherness and Unity among the people, integration in all respects, Social,

Political, and Economic and above all, Emotional has been a prime Objective of

NCC. With respect to this cause, several of our cadets have attended the

Special National Integration Camps organized and Conducted by the NCC with

a view to bring together cadets from different parts of the country at various

locations. Our cadets ( 2 SD and 3 SW) SGT Albert Jose, JUO Clinto Raj CSM

Oleena Jose, CQMS DELNA Elizabeth Baby and SGT Preethika Pius attended

NIC held at different places of the country.

6. Mountaineering and Trekking Camps: The spirit of adventure still breathes

among our cadets. Our Cadets CSM Vishnu vijayakumar (Trekking), Amritha V

K and Revathy K(Trekking) participated in All India Mountaineering Camp

held during 23 Sept -17 November 2014 and All India Trekking camp at

Idukki during 24th Oct- 30th Oct 2015

7. Army attachment camps: Army Attachment Camps were held at Different

parts of the state this year. It is conducted in association with regular army

units of Indian army. 4 of our cadets took part in the camp during 02 Nov

2014 to 17 Nov 2014. They also won several prizes in different competitions

held in the camp.

8. Republic Day Camp (RDC): The Republic Day Camp is the most prestigious

camp of the NCC. Lasting for over a Month, Inaugurated by the Vice President,

Visited by dignitaries such as the CM of Delhi, The Defence Minister, and The

Chiefs of the 3 services and Cadets from friendly Nations, the RDC is the

dream Camp of any Cadet. This year 2 cadets of our unit took part in the RD

camp.

9. Two Ceremonial parades were conducted this year on the following days. 1)

6th Jan 2016 in honour the great soldiers who laid their life for our country in

the pathankote terrorists attack.

2) REPUBLIC DAY.

Besides all these activities, our Cadets also helped in the smooth running of various

programmes of the Institution. Some of them are Course Inauguration programme,

Onam and Christmas Celebrations, Union Inauguration etc.

With all these activities, The SD and SW wing Of St. Aloysius College Unit under

24[k] Bn had a fruitfull year.
