PART-B
1. ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE
INSTITUTION:
When higher education was beyond the reach of the suppressed and economically
marginalized young generation in and around Tiruchirappalli region during the national
independence, Thanthai Periyar, the visionary leader and social reformer had generously
donated 9.65 acres of land in addition to 3.5 Lakhs rupees to the Government of Tamil Nadu
with a request to start a Government college in Tiruchirappalli town, to cater the needs of
5
them in the field of higher education. Utilizing the philanthropic help of Thanthai Periyar,
the Government of Tamil Nadu started a Government college at Khajamalai near
Mannarpuram, Tiruchirappalli during the academic year 1965 – 1966 and named it as
Periyar E.V.R. College. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Honorable M.
Bhakthavatchalam inaugurated the college on 24.08.1965.
Due to the selfless services and academic credibility, it attained autonomous status
during 1998 – 1999. In the annals of the college, the academic year 1998-1999 proved to be
significant on two counts. The college becomes co-educational, providing girl students’
access to higher education; the college also becomes autonomous, resulting in a sea change
in aims, aspirations and achievements of the college.
The college is now offering 14 UG and 15 PG programmes in addition to PG diploma in
two departments. Eight departments have been recognized as research centres both by the
Government of Tamil Nadu and Bharathidasan University, which offers M. Phil. / Ph.D. in
full time and part time basis. The college campus has expanded to 52.62 acres with adequate
class rooms and necessary infrastructural facilities. 2681students are pursuing their higher
studies both in regular and shift systems. 90% of them belong to oppressed and
economically marginalized who hail from rural background. Many of them are first
generation learners. In all, Periyar EVR College performs the role of uplifting the poor
students by providing them holistic higher education and make responsible individuals who
are inclined to serve their families, society and ultimately the nation.
In the year 2000, the Computer Literacy Programme introduced by the
Government of Tamil Nadu in order to help the students majoring in other courses than
Computer Science was implemented successfully and has been conducted effectively.
Special Shift System (SSS) was introduced in the year 2006 by the State Government Policy
of education with the available infrastructure.
The college has faculty strength of 120 members of whom 43 members have acquired
Ph.D. degree. The development of the college in the academic, extra – curricular and
extension programmes are due to the able leadership of several academics who served as
Principals of this college. Autonomy has provided the academic freedom required to design
innovative curricula and use multimedia and modern methods of teaching and evaluation. In
other words, it had given a new dimension to the institution - a new mind- set to the teachers
and new hope to the students.
6
The academic profile of the staff of the college is quite impressive. The Bharathidasan
University recognized many of the staff members as research supervisors who have
subsequently produced Ph.D.’s and M.Phil.’s. The faculty together with the Principal forms
an efficient team that can respond to the ever changing needs of the college.
The College, which was originally affiliated to Madras University, came under the
jurisdiction of Bharathidasan University since 1982.
Since 2005 onwards, the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and Semester Pattern
has been followed.
Mission:
To provide quality education especially to the students who belonged to the rural and
economically weaker section.
To make the students to understand their social commitment
To help the students responsible citizens for the nation.
Goal:
To make this institution a centre of teaching and by providing education at free of cost
as per the norms of the government of Tamil Nadu.
To encourage the faculty members to participate in more number of conferences and
seminars.
To encourage faculty members to involve in taking up major and minor projects.
To make the students to participate in the field visits, workshops and seminars for
enriching advanced learning.

activities like tests, semester examinations etc.
Semester Pattern of Examination is introduced.
Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) system has been introduced as a part of CBCS
pattern to all Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses from the academic year
2005-2006.
Students have to write two CIA tests in a semester for all the papers. Seminars,
Assignments and Attendances are taken into consideration for Internal Marks.
Post graduate students undertake the Projects in their Fourth semester.
Semester Question papers are maintained in the respective Departments.
For all UG, PG and Research Programmes semester Question Papers are purely set by
External Examiners.

Question Paper Scrutiny Committee is formed to scrutinize the question papers before
the examinations to avoid (a) out of syllabi questions(b) repetitions of questions (c)
typographical errors and to assess the merit and standard of the questions asked.

23. COURSES IN WHICH STUDENT ASSESSMENT OF TEACHERS IS
INTRODUCED AND THE ACTION TAKEN ON STUDENT FEEDBACK:
Feedback about all the courses and the corresponding course teachers are obtained
from the students and the comments made by the students are discussed with the
concerned faculty members by the Principal for improvement.
Proper assessment on student feedback was done using assessment forms. It consists
of various parameters like,
Punctuality
Class Control
20
Preparation for the Class
Clarity of expression and Competency in teaching
Class room Interaction
Motivating the students and academic help for weaker students
Covering Syllabus in time
Prompt valuation and returning of test papers/ Assignments
Ease of access
Career guidance and Counselling
Every staff member collects feedback from their respective classes. Depending on
the students feedback academic counselling is given by the principal to the
staff concerned if needed.
24. FEED BACK FROM STAKEHOLDERS
Alumni are the most precious stake holder of our institution. Many of our alumni
are working with reputed organisations and they are giving feed back regarding
the changes required in the method of training, course content, add on courses and
emerging opportunities.
Alumni meets are conducted every year on department basis and feed backs
are collected for future action.
Feedback from student community is considered as the most vital information
and hence it is well recognised. The students are represented by the class
monitors and representatives of various student organisations. Meeting of the class
representatives and the class monitors will be called by the principal once in every
three months and their suggestions are collected to improve the performance of the
institution.
