Rabbi Vernon KurtzIn recognition of his lifetime of service to the Jewish community in Chicago and around the world, the 47th Annual Julius Rosenwald Award will be awarded to Rabbi Vernon Kurtz.

Honoring the memory of Julius Rosenwald, one of America’s first great philanthropists, this award is presented each year to the individual who has achieved the most in the advancement of the goals of the Jewish Federation and for the welfare of the overall Jewish community.

Natan Sharansky is a human rights activist and promoter of democratic values and freedom for all the world’s citizens. After spending nearly a decade in a Soviet prison, Sharansky eventually won his freedom and the

right to emigrate to Israel in 1986. Following his arrival in Israel, Sharansky served in four Israeli governments as Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, published three bestselling books, and was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He remains a champion of the right of all people to live in freedom, and believes that the advancement of liberty is critical to peace and security around the world. Natan Sharansky currently serves as the Chairman of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Israel.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most extraordinary events in modern Jewish history, Operation Exodus. After two decades of intensive advocacy, in which our Jewish Federation joined others around the country and took a leadership role, the American Jewish community rescued 1.4 million Jews from lives of persecution in the Soviet Union.
