As always, the IMTA Management Conference will kick off with a motivational message that will move and inspire you. Who better to give everyone a morning jolt of inspiration than former Norway High School baseball coach Kent Stock. Norway baseball is legendary in the state of Iowa and Stock had the honor of coaching this infamous team in their final season. Clouded in the emotional turmoil that is always prevalent when a community is forced into a school merger, this first-year coach faced almost unfathomable challenges from the first pitch. But like many great stories, this story ends on such a powerful and positive note that even those who don’t like baseball will stand up and cheer. The story is so remarkable that even Hollywood took notice. In 2007, the movie “The Final Season” was released and moved audiences everywhere as they quickly discovered that Norway, Iowa, is the home of great baseball and, more importantly, great people. Stock will tell his once in a lifetime experience as he led this team through its final season that ended up with its 20th state baseball title.

The IMTA is always pleased and proud to welcome the incoming chairman of American Trucking Associations (ATA) to its annual event. As the elected leader of ATA, Michael Card will be the face and voice of trucking on the national level in 2013. In this very important position, Michael will be working diligently to move forward a pro-business and pro-trucking agenda that will benefit truckers of all sizes throughout the nation. His appearance at this event will give the IMTA an introduction to a leader that is committed and dedicated to this industry. Michael is the president of Combined Transport, Inc., which is located in Central Point, OR. The company was founded in 1980 by his father and operates 433 trucks. Combined Transport hauls building materials, glass and heavy haul equipment on flatbeds and lowboys.

The one constant that has always been prevalent in the trucking industry is change, and because of the continual change in the industry, trucking executives are recognized and respected for their ability to react to that change. Whether you are a CEO of a company operating thousands of trucks or simply a handful of trucks, the environment is still the same at every level. Today, owners of trucking companies are faced with the overwhelming responsibility to operate in an environment and atmosphere that is fueled by intense government oversight, shrinking profit margins, formidable competition and a fragile world economy. Being in the trucking industry is not for the “weak” at heart and the IMTA has the honor of bringing three iconic trucking leaders to its convention. All three panelists – Mike Gerdin with Heartland Express; Kevin Knight with Knight Transportation; and Aaron Tennant with Tennant Truck Lines – are recognized and respected throughout the nation for their outstanding leadership skills in operating companies that are as equally respected. These three leaders will share their insight and perspective on the industry as they see it today and where they predict it will be tomorrow. You won’t want to miss this rare opportunity to hear three of trucking’s great on the same stage.

SESSION 1Trucking Industry Panel: Their Take on Today and Tomorrow’s Trucking Industry

roundtable discussions

Page 5: Annual Management Conference - Iowa Motor Truck Association Inc

session descriptionssession descriptions

The trucking industry is vitally important to the economy and, in today’s global economy, it is essential that everyone in trucking has an understanding of what is happening with the economy. The IMTA is most pleased to be able to bring world renowned economist Anirban Basu to its event. Basu is chairman and CEO of Sage Policy Group, Inc., which is an economy and policy consulting firm located in Baltimore, Md. Basu is one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s most recognizable economists, in part because of his consulting work on behalf of numerous clients, including prominent developers, bankers, brokerage houses, energy suppliers and law firms. Basu also serves as the chief economist to the Associated Builders and Contractors and the Construction Financial Managers Association. In recent years, he also focused upon health economics, the economics of education and economic development. Basu is a highly sought after speaker, not only because of his expertise and experience as one of the nation’s top economists but because of his unique and enjoyable speaking style that allows everyone in the audience to understand and be entertained.

Three-time Super Bowl champion and five-time Pro Bowl selection, Darren Woodson is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Dallas Cowboys uniform. The vocal leader of the defense during the Cowboys 1990’s Super Bowl teams, Woodson was one of the most popular players both inside the clubhouse and as an ambassador in the community. Upon retirement, Woodson joined ESPN as an NFL analyst. He appears on NFL Live and SportsCenter, as well as other ESPN platforms throughout the year.

Woodson earned a reputation as one of the hardest hitters and most ferocious strong safeties in the NFL during his 13 seasons (1992-2004), all with the Dallas Cowboys. The quarterback of the team’s defense during its three championship runs in the 1990s (Super Bowl’s XXVII, XXVIII and XXX), Woodson registered career totals of 11 sacks, 23 interceptions and 1,350 tackles, the most in Cowboys franchise history at the time of his retirement in 2004.

A native of Phoenix, Woodson was a second round pick in the 1992 NFL Draft (37th overall) from Arizona State University, where he was a converted linebacker. He earned a bachelor of science from ASU in Justice Studies.

Energy continues to be one of the hottest topics of the day and the trucking industry has been leading the charge in identifying alternative sources of energy and pressuring elected leaders to make development of domestic energy policies a top priority. Andrew Browning and his partners with Consumers Energy Alliance (CEA) are spearheading efforts in all areas of energy policy development through the nation and abroad. Browning is the executive vice president at CEA, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that supports thoughtful utilization of energy resources. Formerly a Clinton White House appointee to the United States Department of Energy, Browning is also an adjunct professor in the Energy Management Program at Norway’s Bodo Graduate School of Business at the University of Nordland.
