Dear Riverstone Community,

The mission of Riverstone International School is to inspire courageous journeys of academic and personal exploration that enable students to lead purposeful lives.

As Trustees, the School’s mission statement is the compass we use to evaluate strategies with the goal of ensuring the School’s long-term sustainability. Our mission is also the bond that ties our community together; it is the shared vision we have of providing the best education possible for our students.

The 2016-17 school year was filled with important moments in the history of Riverstone International School. From preschool through high school, our students thrived. The results of a Riverstone education were visible in the Primary Years Programme Expositions, Gr 5 Exhibition, Gr 10 Personal Project Exhibition, and Meet the Seniors. Our students outperformed their peers around the world using international benchmarking assessments, and our Diploma Programme pass rates continued to outpace the local, national, and international averages.

Our graduates were accepted into top colleges and universities around the world, many with merit scholarships to the school of their choice. They pursue the next steps in their journeys with a solid academic foundation and strength of character developed by supportive teachers, challenging opportunities inside and outside of the classroom, and a global perspective cultivated by conversations with classmates from around the world.

Additionally, the Malone Family Foundation honored us with their second $1 million gift to our endowment fund. With four Malone Scholars having graduated from the school, and five scholars currently enrolled, the Malone Family Foundation has increased the diversity of perspective in our community while providing individuals opportunities they might not otherwise have. Their generosity has been life-changing for our scholars and School.

Our first new building in seven years was opened in January 2017. Our strong financial standing, in part thanks to everyone who supported our endowment campaign, made replacing aging portables with improved classrooms and laboratories a reality. This building is the first phase of a new Middle and High School building. As Trustees, we are evaluating the timing for this next big step in Riverstone history.

Bringing our mission to life requires the commitment, energy, and passion of many. Your gifts make a difference—every day—for every student at Riverstone. As a private school, we do not receive federal or state funding; we rely on tuition, grants, and the generosity of our community to fund the education we provide.

In our Annual Report, we gratefully recognize the generosity of spirit and gifts from parents, staff, students, grandparents, alumni, friends, and granting organizations who enable us to offer this unique educational experience.

Best wishes for an inspired journey,

Mark Liebich Chairman, Board of Trustees 2016-2017

AN INSPIRED JOURNEY

Page 3: ANNUAL REPORT · laid the foundation for our current Five Pillars. They wanted to raise the bar on education in the Treasure Valley. Their vision, their dedication, and their risk-taking

Dear Riverstone Community,

In the fall of 2017, we open our doors for the 20th time. We owe a great deal to the founding families who wanted to create a school with an educational philosophy that laid the foundation for our current Five Pillars. They wanted to raise the bar on education in the Treasure Valley. Their vision, their dedication, and their risk-taking is what we celebrate. As it says on our alumni and faculty shirts, “Where you’re from is who you are.”

Hidden Springs Community School opened in Hidden Springs in 1997, and moved to our current location in the summer of 2000, the year my son started first grade. The name was changed to RiverStone Community School that same year. In 2006, the school name changed once more to Riverstone International School, a reflection of our commitment to offering an international education right here in Boise, Idaho.

The Kennedy Gymnasium sits in the former site of what certainly was one of the most dangerous playgrounds anywhere: an old, metal slide sat next to an abandoned car. Luckily, it was surrounded by a sharp barbed wire fence protecting an RV storage lot. Despite the campus appearance, we all enrolled our children for the faculty and the education that was offered here, and while our facilities are so much better now, the support of our community and commitment of our staff remain the keys to our success.

What our founders valued is what we still value today; inspiring journeys in an academically rigorous environment, with small classrooms that focus on discussion, presentation, and application, and where each student is known and loved. I am sure the founding parents and staff would be very proud to know that we are one of the highest ranked schools in the country, and by far, the best in Idaho.

I must say thank you to the Riverstone community for your support the past few years; it will be long remembered in the history of our school.

Our 2016-2017 Annual Fund, led by Rachel and Michael Bergmann, had high levels of participation and raised much needed funds that we put to use immediately in our operating budget. The Annual Auction, led by Kris Ball and held at JUMP for the first time, was a night of celebration, while raising funds for operating expenses and the arts. The Parents’ Association, led by Natalie Geffros and her team of parents, made sure our community remained cohesive and strong. Under the leadership of Kurt and Treacy Liebich, we raised an endowment substantial enough to secure the Malone Family Foundation grant. As a result, we now have almost $4 million in our endowment fund. We secured a partner to achieve one of our long-term goal of building a residential facility - ensuring that we would have a vibrant international community at our school. We opened Riverstone House in the fall of 2016. Because of our improved financial position, we were able to build and open Phase 1, the science and music wing of our new Middle and High School.

All of these vital endeavors involved the support of so many people: families, students, staff, grandparents, alumni, friends, and granting organizations. The vision that began in 1997 continues to shine bright as a result of your generosity.

I can’t thank you enough for your role in creating this very special place that offers a world class education, with world class faculty and world class facilities, that brings the world to Boise.

With gratitude,

Bob Carignan Head of School

Page 4: ANNUAL REPORT · laid the foundation for our current Five Pillars. They wanted to raise the bar on education in the Treasure Valley. Their vision, their dedication, and their risk-taking

The pathways through which our students explore during their journeys are created by our Five Pillars.

Whether a student is in Preschool or soon to graduate, our Five Pillars provide developmentally appropriate challenges and opportunities for academic and personal growth and learning. The sum of these opportunities becomes the springboard for our students to take the next step in their journeys.

Your gifts ensure that Riverstone continues to offer unique opportunities tied to our Five Pillars. For example, transportation for field trips, guest speakers, service opportunities, art supplies, outdoor equipment, music and drama performances all benefit from your support and directly impact the Riverstone student experience.

Our Five Pillars are: • Academic Excellence • Community and Service • Leadership by Example • International Understanding • Outdoor Education

During the development of the 2014-19 Strategic Plan, the School’s mission was refined to simplify and better capture the essence of “Why Riverstone?”

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION Riverstone International School is a non-profit, independent school that relies on the generous support of families, friends, staff, and community organizations to supplement tuition revenue and provide support for our programs through volunteerism.

Our students and staff benefit from the time, talent, energy, and passions of the Riverstone community.

• The Parents’ Association (PA) kicked off the school year with the “BooHoo Yahoo” Coffee following Convocation on the first day of school and an Ice Cream Social later that afternoon.

• They also continued to build community by organizing the Fall Pumpkin Patch and Bake Sale, Variety Show Pizza Dinner, and Meet the Seniors events. Due to weather and thanks to the quick thinking of the 2016-17 PA members, our Fall Carnival became our Spring Carnival and the Fall Bingo Night event became a new tradition to kick off the semester together.

• Our parents volunteer as PA officers, room parents, fundraising committee members, classroom assistants, field trip chaperones, subject area experts, coaches, and more.

• The Merci Lunch program continues to flourish, bringing smiles to the staff on “Merci Lunch Day” each month. In addition to delicious internationally-themed lunches and treats, our parents encouraged our students to write notes to the teachers that gave them the opportunity to show their appreciation as well.

A giant thank you to the PA leadership team and all our parents for their dedication to the school throughout each school year.

ANNUAL AUCTION 2017 MAD HATTERS BALL

It was a delightfully maddening night at the 2017 Annual Auction! The Mad Hatters Ball brought our community together over cakes and teas and crazy hats. Under the leadership of Kris Ball, the Auction Committee hosted an incredible evening that kept our bidding paddles and pinkies up. We are grateful for the parents who so kindly donated many hours of their time and talent on the school’s behalf.

When the party was over, the net proceeds totaled over $144,800 with nearly $60,000 dedicated to the Fund A Need. This year’s Fund A Need supported improvements to our arts

and music programs. New technologies, materials and equipment offered more individual opportunity to utilize these tools and instruments rather than students sharing them. Our impressive arts curriculum was given further room to grow and develop. The school saw an increase in the opportunity to celebrate our students and the arts while teachers became more efficient by having what they needed in hand.

The following list identifies our event sponsors and Fund A Need donors. We thank everyone who donated towards complimentary tickets for our staff, as well as all of our generous donors and purchasers of silent, live, and dessert auction items, who were acknowledged in our auction catalog and newsletters.

FUND-A-NEEDThe 2017 Fund A Need was focused on the arts. We raised nearly $60,000 at the Auction and in the weeks following! We followed the guidance of the teachers on how to invest your gifts in ways that would improve both the student and teaching experience in the arts.

The following is a partial list of the improvements we were able to make thanks to your generosity:

• New Elementary School music curriculum • Tubano drum sets and xylophones • Digital keyboards, cajons, and requinto • Art and design workstation with storage • Purpose-built art tables in the Middle and High School and rolling custom-built art tables with built-in

file storage in the Elementary School • Student portfolio storage and supply storage cabinetry • Wireless microphones, microphone stands, speakers, and amplifiers • 10 Sibelius licenses for MYP and DP music: an industry standard professional music notation software

allowing students to create high-quality printed scores. • 20 Logic Pro licenses for MYP and DP music: an industry standard professional music production

software allowing students to edit, manage and produce high quality recordings and electronic music tracks.

• Music stand storage and instrument storage

“My students have been able to work with and develop their skills using industry-standard music technology in both live and recording situations. Now, each student in my courses has the opportunity to engage on a daily basis with music technology."

OUR ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN NAVIGATING FORWARD

In January 2015, Riverstone International School embarked upon a two-year campaign to build an endowment called “Navigating Forward.” Led by Campaign Co-Chairs, Kurt and Treacy Liebich, the need for this essential campaign was identified as a priority during strategic planning.

The Riverstone International School Endowment is comprised of three elements:

• The Fund for Excellence • The Fund for Capital Improvement • The Malone Family Foundation Fund

Fund for Excellence Support of the Fund for Excellence will provide funding to ensure excellence and continual improvement of our students’ educational experience:

• Advance the vision and initiatives presented in strategic planning; • Enhance faculty development and compensation; • Strengthen the programs that the school offers; • Improve access for more students to attend Riverstone International School, including the J.A. and Kathryn

Albertson Foundation Scholarship and the Alexandra Frizzell Memorial Scholarship for Refugees.

Fund for Capitol Improvements Support of the Fund for Capital Improvement will enable the school to thoughtfully address facilities’ needs and improvements that are supported in strategic planning. Malone Family Foundation Fund By establishing and funding the Riverstone Endowment, the school secured the second $1 million gift from the Malone Family Foundation, totaling $2 million.

In the future, we will provide yearly updates specific to the endowment in the Annual Report. We are incredibly grateful for the generous support of all of our donors. Listed below are donors who contributed to the endowment fund during the 2016-2017 school year.

MALONE FAMILY FOUNDATIONThe Malone Family Foundation was founded in 1997 by Dr. John C. Malone, a well-known communications and media executive and investor, and his family, with one principal objective: to improve access to a quality education — particularly at the secondary school level — for extraordinary students who lack the financial resources to best develop their talents.

In May 2012, Riverstone International School was selected by the Malone Family Foundation to fund scholarships for students who show enthusiasm and motivation for academic excellence and whose families demonstrate financial need. The Foundation has established these scholarships to provide an opportunity for students to reap the benefits of attending a private independent school who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so.

In June 2016, the Malone Family Foundation gifted $1 million to the Riverstone endowment, after the fund had been successfully seeded by generous gifts from the Riverstone community. In June 2017, the Foundation granted another $1 million to the Riverstone endowment, totaling $2 million.

Riverstone is honored to be the only school in Idaho — and one of only 50 in the country — to have been chosen as a Malone Family Foundation School.

We are grateful to the Malone Family Foundation for their confidence in our school and support of these wonderful students.

"My experience at Riverstone has been one-of-a-kind: hiking in the Sawtooths, discovering my love of music, and making friendships that I know will last me for the rest of my life. I have grown into an entirely different and more confident person while I've gone to school here. And none of that would have been possible without the Malone Family Foundation Scholarship."
