January 2020 Annual Johns Island Dinner Celebrates South Carolina CuisinePlease make plans to join us for the annual Johns Island Fundraiser offered on two nights--Friday, February 21 or Saturday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. As we all look forward to a new year, let us again re-commit ourselves to our faith and to the true life that faith gives us. Let us walk knowing that the Eternal is all there is and that our day to day is important but only in the light of how it relates to our God and to our love for Him and for all his creation.

January is a great time for self-examination, for reflection, and renewal. Let us ask ourselves…

- Do I look more like Jesus now than last year?- Do I balance my life so that I take care of my body, mind, and spirit so that I have energy to reach out to others?- Do I use the creativity God has blessed me with to bless others?- Do I enter the arena of life and risk being open and real with others even if it might hurt?- Do I commit to developing deeper relationships with God and others and spend my energy and resources to do so?

These are just a few questions worth pondering. You might be able to add a few more to this list. How is God calling you to new things in 2020?

Ministry Fair: Love Won Another

Someone needs you. You may not know their name or even recognize their face. But someone needs you. It could be a child in a Sunday School classroom, a family

without groceries, or a woman whose roof is caving in. God calls us all to be the hands and feet of Jesus by reaching out to those in need and being in service with one another. Learn more about the many and diverse service opportunities available to you through First Broad Street during our Ministry Fair: Love Won Another on Wednesday, January 8. Since this is a special Wednesday Night Live, we’ll serve dinner early starting at 5:15 p.m. The fair begins with a brief kickoff at 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. After the kickoff, you can browse exhibits set up by each ministry area, talk to staff and volunteers, and sign up to be a part of God’s great work through FBS. Parlor Chats with Randy“Conversations about General Conference 2020”

As we approach General Conference 2020, it is important that FBS becomes informed about how the General Conference business is done, the issues that will be presented, and how decisions made in Minneapolis will impact our denomination, our Annual Conference, and the ministries of our local church. The CLC of our church has set up 16 sessions for our members to meet with our Lead Pastor and become more informed about this upcoming General Conference.

The Schedule for these sessions will be as follows:

Sunday Sessions (6:00 p.m.) Tuesday Sessions (6:30 p.m.) January 19 January 21 February 2 January 28 February 16 February 11 March 1 February 25 March 15 March 10 March 29 March 24 April 19 April 7, 14, 21

Each session will run about an hour and refreshments will be served.

Attendance will be limited to 12 people in order to facilitate conversation and give those who attend ample time for questions and comments.

Reservations are required and you can make those by calling the church office at 423-224-1502. If additional sessions are requested/needed, we will add them to the calendar.

A NEW LIFE GROUP TO BEGIN IN JANUARYA new Life Group geared for parents with children will begin in January 2020. Margie Nichols will host this group on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 7:30 pm at the church. There will be nursery, childcare, and children and youth programming available while you are engaged with adults who are experiencing similar life. There will be fellowship, a time of sharing prayer concerns, and a guest facilitator for study and discussion - all culminating in a stronger relationship with Christ and with one another. We celebrate that 2019 has been a fruitful year in the Mission Ministry of First Broad Street UMC, both through your financial and in-kind gifts as well your participation in ministry opportunities. God’s faithfulness to the world continues to be manifested in our community, across the nation, and around the world through the passion and commitment of the congregation each day of the week…52 weeks a year. Please enjoy the photos that follow of some of the opportunities that enabled those whom we serve, and ourselves as well, to encounter Jesus. Holiday Food Bags Drive Continue through January 5The FBS Food Ministry sees an increase in families and individuals seeking assistance during the winter months. Look for the bags, with ingredients needed listed, in the hallway of the church, either by the stairwell, or in the hallway by the restrooms and coffee. Filled bags are to be returned to the cart in the hallway by the main office.

FBSUMC Hosts Miles For SmilesMiles For Smiles is scheduled to return on March 19th and 20th. This ministry is supported by the congregation and also seeks volunteers to facilitate the free dental care provided to so many throughout the year. Currently needed for our hosting are nurses, runners, lunch servers, and people to assist at the registration table. If you would like to know more about this ministry opportunity, or become a volunteer, please call the mission office at 423-224-1531.

Third Saturday Home RepairThe 1st Third Saturday Home Repair of the year is scheduled for Saturday, January 18th. We hope you will plan to join us for this opportunity to repair a home or construct a wheelchair ramp while sharing God’s love and grace to others in our community. We meet at the church kitchen at 8:30 a.m. and then proceed to the project after a short devotion shared together. You may find out more about this ministry opportunity by calling the mission office at 423-224-1531.
