    Piano Adjudicator – Janet Gieck

Janet Gieck grew up surrounded by rural Saskatchewan culture and landscape, a fact which has profoundly affected her musical output. After completing music degrees from Prairie Bible College (Three Hills, AB) and the Royal Conservatory of Music, she has had her compositions performed at many concerts, New Music Festivals and on CBC radio. Her pedagogical compositions are now listed on many different syllabi across the country. Passionate about sharing music with those in her community and beyond, Janet is a member of the Alliance for Canadian New Music Projects, the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers' Association (currently serving as president of the Swift Current branch), and the composer's collective Red Leaf Pianoworks. Currently, Janet works as a member of the fine arts department at Millar College of the Bible in Pambrun, SK where she lives with her husband and three children. She is also in demand as a piano teacher, adjudicator and clinician.

    Band, Strings, & Guitar Adjudicator

    James McCarthy

JIM McCARTHY is an established freelance musician with accolades in a wide range of skills–performing–composition–arranging–studio production-music education and instrument design and building. He graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1996 with a Masters degree in Music Performance–Percussion. Jim currently maintains annual tours in Australia performing with Musica Viva In Schools as well as running various master classes and clinics. He also arranges music for school bands and produces sequences and recordings for The Fun Music Company. Additionally Jim runs a web based business that focuses on designing and building custom percussion instruments, as well as a subscription website that produces video tutorials for marimba technique and monthly critiques of percussion performances on youtube.

PERFORMING: Jim currently performs with “The Rhythm Works” for Musica Viva and has done so every year since 1996–as well as other occasional contracts. Throughout his career he has been a long serving member of the “Lights” New Music Ensemble, the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, R@taque Percussion Duo and the Adelaide Percussion Quartet. He has also performed occasionally with the State Theatre Company of SA and the Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra. COMPOSING: Jim’s performance skills focus on percussion instruments, so much of his earlier compositions featured these. Most notable are Justification (percussion duo), Synergetic Oxymoron (concerto for percussion and chamber ensemble), the Water Suite (percussion duo and small ensemble), Project Arcadia (marimba & percussion trio) and his Concerto for marimba and wind orchestra. Many of these compositions feature Jim’s gigantic Contra-Bass marimbas which he has a passion for building. Jim also composes for specific groups like the symphonic fantasy Escape of the Pegasus for the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, Suite for a Future Lost for the Adelaide University Brass ensemble, Christmas Overture for Jillian for the Adelaide Wind Orchestra and Nine Clouds Climbing for the Adelaide Percussion Quartet. The current focus is more on orchestral music, particularly film score and trailers. AS AN EDUCATOR: Jim has held positions working with both individuals and ensembles in thirteen schools and universities since 1988. As a specialist in rudimental snare drum and drumming technique, Jim has become highly sought after to give clinics and master-classes throughout Australia. His book Stick Technique is recognized globally as a definitive work on the subject. He also has a strong interest in developing beginner musicians and in 2001 completed a textbook and video tutorial series for first time drummers-Begin Drumming. Jim’s current focus in education is in the production of resources and learning materials for keyboard percussionists. His most recent project is the development of marimba/vibraphone video tutorials for the Percussion KEYS membership website where he also delivers a series of critiques of youtube video performances each month.
