A message from our
President
PRESIDENT
Betty BruffyDuncan Interests
Wow! How did this happen again???? It’s already December,
and 2008 is almost gone. However, this is my favorite time of
the year. So many people are filled with holiday joy, and the
spirit of giving (and, of course, the anticipation of receiving). As
many of you know, I’m a great fan of “Elvis” and I’m reminded of
his song, “Why Can’t Everyday Be Like Christmas.”
We tend to reserve our most charitable and forgiving behavior
for the last few days of the year, and as we celebrate various
traditions, our hearts are more at peace—“if that feeling could go
on endlessly, what a wonderful world this would be.”
I celebrate Christmas with religious traditions, friends, family,
and all we hold dear. I particularly look forward to this
Christmas, when my grandson will be aware that this is a joyous
time and there is something very special happening, and I look
forward to seeing his face when he opens his gifts.
Whatever your belief, the end of another year gives cause for
reflection, new goals, and helping those who haven’t been as
fortunate as we have.
Last year, EWI – Houston Chapter contributed two carloads of
gifts to “Blue Santa,” sponsored by the Houston Police
Department, to give to those children who may not know the joy
of receiving a toy, or may not know that there are many of us
who care. This year, we have another opportunity to brighten
the holidays for a youngster through the “Blue Santa” program,
so I hope that you will consider the spirit of the season, and
bring a gift to the December chapter meeting. “Blue Santa” also
accepts monetary contributions, and all sorts of gift-wrapping
supplies. If you have any questions about the program, please
contact Kathy Hibbard, at United Way of Greater Houston.
Every day we receive gifts, whether tangible or not. The gifts
of life, love, liberty, intellect, friendships, family, and many mate-
rial things, but we each have a gift that can be given repeatedly,
and it renews itself each time it’s given—a smile. There are too
many times we see strangers who seem to have nothing, but
when they smile, they seem to have everything. I’ll bet you
even return their smile with one of your own. We can’t help feel-
ing a little better when we smile.
I hope your holidays are happy, and that you give from your
heart—laughter, love, friendship, a song, and especially a smile.
All are renewable resources! And remember to take the time to
be thankful . . .

November Meeting at Picazo’s RestaurantNovember Meeting at Picazo’s Restaurant
Jan Hargrave was our special guest speaker for the November 13th din-
ner meeting at Picazo’s.
Jan, a professional speaker, lecturer and author spoke to us about the
world of nonverbal communication or the term as we know it “body lan-
guage”.
Jan challenged us to recognize the different expressions, stances a per-
son takes, and how he or she uses their hands when they are speaking
or reacting to a situation. You can tell a lot about how a person shakes
your hand as to the kind of personality they are.
Jan talked to us about the way we can learn how to interpret facial characteristics, handwriting,
nonverbal communication, social dynamics, and personality to gain insight into the mind of a
person. How do you get a sense of whether to trust the person you have just met or not?
By noting their body language and facial expressions, your gut instinct can tell you whether
this person will be a mere acquaintance or a life-long friend.
Jan entertained us with a “skit” using David Jones, D. Jones Photography, as her prop to show
how a couple communicates speaking no words. We had a great time and David was a very
good sport!
Jan Hargrave
“Raise your right hand.” Did you know that the posi-
tion of your raised hand says something about you?
Wonder what these hands are saying?
Jan shows Betty the various handshakes and
what each means.
Jan convinces David to help her show the audience how
couples communicate without words - interesting!

Did You Know. . .Did You Know. . .Name Tag Etiquette
When wearing a name tag, it should be placed on the right shoulder. The reason
for this is that most people are right handed and when people shake hands, using
their right hand, this is where the eye can best see the name tag and the name of
the person.

This and that...
Dear Ms. Powers and the EWI Houston Chapter,
I would like to thank you for the wonderful basket of goodies. I love it all. Thankyou so very much. I would like to apologize for the late thank you letter. For yousee, I have been helping my school’s speech and debate team get ready for thetournament we were to run. With the recent change in coaches, we seniors hadto take over and show her how we get it all done. I would also like to say thankyou for giving my mother, Christina, and I the chance to hear Jan Hargravespeak at the function. We all had a great time meeting you all and being in yourpresence.
Thank you again,
Natalie Strohl
