In February, Sue Wicks stepped in as
Manager to continue the smooth
delivery and implementation of our
MineX; and in April 2015, she
accepted the role in a permanent
capacity. I would like to add my
personal thanks to Sue and the work
that she has done to continue to
connect our members throughout
the year. Sue, we look forward to
your continued contributions over
the next 12 months.
Also to the outgoing board of
Commerce North West. I thank you
for all of your assistance this past
year; it has been appreciated. I
would like to make special mention
of Ryan Mackenzie and Dee Ivers
who have chosen not to run again
this year. We wish you well for your
future endeavours; Commerce
North West is better due to the
contributions from you both over
the years.
I also thank Raji Gunitalake who was
our Treasurer for half of this financial
year before he left Mount Isa. We
appreciate that Dan Horrobin was
able to step in and act as Treasurer
for the past few months, assisting the
board.
To our members, you are the reason
why Commerce North West exists.
The stability in membership numbers
over the year is a testament to your
faith in what we can offer you.
Where to for 2016? With new
members stepping up into positions
on the board, we expect to see a
new wave of ideas and enthusiasm.
I will look forward to 2016 and will be
working towards the continued
growth of Mount Isa and the Region
for all areas of business and tourism.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT—2014/2015
Although this has been a difficult year,
economically speaking, it has been a
busy one for Commerce North West
and our members.
During these difficult economic times, it
is encouraging to see many of our local
businesses are looking at other avenues;
diversifying into new business venture
and expanding their range of products
and services. It demonstrates faith in
the long-term success of Mount Isa.
And the Commerce North West Board
have been doing the same. Tonight
we launch our Partners and Sponsors
Packages, which give local businesses
the opportunity to partner with us to
increase their profile and exposure.
You will also have seen the positive
publicity regarding our Buy Local
Campaign which is currently in its fourth
month. We have already announced
three winners of the $5,000 prize, and
another two to go. The campaign has
been opened to all businesses in Mount
Isa; and we are looking forward to an
increase in participants during the
December month.
The networking events have been
another successful venture for the
Chamber. This year they were held at
Lake Moondarra Accommodation, TAFE
North Queensland, Laura Johnson
Home and Red Oasis Early Childcare
Centre; and we thank all our hosts for
their support.
We have had a number of informative
and interesting business lunches this
year including our first one in March with
Hon Dr Anthony Lynham MP. As
Queensland's Minister for State Develop-
ment and for Natural Resources and
Mine, he shared his insight into mining in
the region. This was followed by
another successful lunch when the State
Treasurer, Hon Curtis Pitt MP delivered his
post-budget luncheon.
During the year, we ran a number of
sessions for our members and guests
including Top Tips for Grant Funding by
the RDA; and a presentation from
Jemena, one of the main proponents in
the NT Gas Pipeline project.
We welcomed members to our general
meetings in February, April, June and
August; and we welcome you all again
to this, our AGM.
In 2015, we also saw the appointment of
Sheridan Ward, our City Development
Officer. The continued funding for this
role is from a joint venture with
Glencore, Commerce North West and
Mount Isa City Council. A special
mention goes to Gary Murray and Ryan
Mackenzie who have been the task-
force representatives for Commerce
North West, and we look forward to
more new developments from this task-
force in the near future.
With more than 100 exhibitors and over
2000 registered visitors, MineX2015
turned into a successful event, with
positive feedback from the exhibitors
about the set-up. We have also
received reinforcement that moving to
a biennial event was the right decision
with sponsors and exhibitors. The intro-
duction of the Mine Rescue Challenge,
where exhibitors were able to compete
against each other in a race of physical
fitness, was hotly contested. And our
closing event – our own mini-rodeo –
was a fantastic way to showcase Mount
Isa.
The EMO Trans Northern Outback
Business Awards received a new
naming rights sponsor this year, and with
some newly introduced awards, 400
people at a gala dinner, and a fantastic
new venue, the dinner was an event
not to be missed. Celebrating our Out-
back Stars is what we did, in style; and it
was a success thanks to all our sponsors
and supporters.
However, the change to a biennial
MineX means that we have also had to
look at our own income streams and
operational expenses. Unfortunately
that means that we will be farewelling
our administration officer, Gemma
Murphy, at the end of November.
Gemma has been a great source of
energy and vitality to the Chamber
office, and we wish her all the best in
her future endeavours.
Over the last 12 months, since our last
AGM, we also said good-bye to Loretta
Gladstone who was in the Manager’s
role for 6 months; and to Nicole
Landsberry who left us in September.
We thank both Loretta and Nicole for
their positive contribution to chamber.

We are excited to announce the new look to our Easifind Business
Directory for 2016.
The directory will now contain details of businesses only; the
residential component of the directory has been removed. This
enables us to focus on the true purpose of the Easifind Business
Directory.
We will still be printing 10,000 copies of the directory, and it will be
delivered to each premises in Isa, with deliveries also to regional areas
of Cloncurry, Camooweal, Burketown, Boulia and Dajarra.
The white pages will contain alphabetical listing of all businesses, with the option of highlighting and
print ads, and we plan to enhance the yellow pages section with more categories. Closing date for
Easifnd is 30 November, so contact Gemma if you haven’t yet secured your entry.
