unwholesome actions by certain individuals in Lahore. However, it may be time now to heal those wounds in the best interest of IAP’s future at a time, when the older order changeth to new, world-wide. Furthermore, and more importantly, we hold the CHAIRMANS position in Arcasia which requires solid backing of the home Institute. We in the Karachi Chapter, earnestly desire a United and strong IAP to back up the Chairman to discharge his duty towards the growth of not one, but 19 nations across ASIA… IAP’s Akeel and Zaigham have served Arcasia before… We want the new Chairman to do much more for Arcasia than us… An honor for IAP and our country PAKISTAN… If this means giving up a few seats in the IAP-NC, we will do it and hope for the best. And, we avidly hope our gesture will be RECIPROCRATED in the same spirit. The election process itself is revealing, especially this year. As in all elections we make new ‘friends new’, new “adversaries” and the process itself lays bare many individuals, their secret whims and desires come out in bits and pieces, and in gushes, overall pictures clarify, not only for the candidates, but for other members as well….as the event is also used settle old scores by the power of the vote. Friends turn out to be ambivalent… their actions or inaction becomes a statement in itself while those that were supposed to be adversaries turn out to be real friends. And then there are those whose friendship and love for you simply surprise you. The process is just that: REVEALING to those who will see. It is a process that reveals both the coal and the gold. Above all, it is a time of learning and education. In order not to lead this ELECTION process into fresh acrimony or fire old ones, again, we must try to abandon egos and give unity and solidarity in the ranks, every chance to prosper in the best interest of IAP! It is in this spirit that I have decided to withdraw from the process THIS year, and I am sure that my friend, candidate Mumtaz Jilani, also from Karachi, will do the same in the larger interest of IAP and be given an opportunity to express herself… leading to the possibility of NO balloting and handing over the reigns of IAP to a fresh group. After all, who can doubt that they are not as much for the best interests of IAP as anyone else? Suppose they are not….then let it be known, that I may not know, but others know how to deal with the future. Thank you, Note: Submitted by Ar. Zaigham S. Jaffery for the record & inclusion in Minutes of AGM, 28th November 2015

The AGM concluded with a vote of thanks to the Chair. Ar. Ramiz Baig Honorary Secretary Institute of Architects, Pakistan

6.0 IAP NATIONAL COUNCIL ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMMES The IAP National Council through its Chapters had charted ambitious plans for holding events throughout the year. During the course of the year the four regional chapters of IAP organized numerous events to promote the profession of architecture and further the dialogue between

architects from different parts of the country. 6.1 IAP Karachi Chapter Activities

6.1.1 The Transnational Mosque: Lecture by Ar. KISHWAR RIZVI, IVSAA, Karachi Architectural and Historical Memory in the Contemporary Middle East

The Karachi Chapter of Institute of Architects, Pakistan in collaboration with IVS Architecture Design Research Lab (IVS-ADRL) organized a lecture by Ar. Kishwar Rizvi, Associate Professor, History of Islamic Art and Architecture Department of the History of Art, Yale University on her new book, "The Transnational Mosque", Architectural and Historical Memory in the Contemporary Middle East to a well-attended gathering of Architects and students at the of Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture, on December 22, 2015. Ar. Kishwar Rizvi, during her lecture spoke about the multifaceted history of the Middle East and other Islamic countries, analyzing role of transnational mosques in the construction of contemporary Muslim identity. She also explained that transnational mosques are structures built through the support of both government sponsorship, whether in the home country or abroad, and diverse transnational networks. By concentrating on mosques especially those built at the turn of the twenty first century as the epitome of Islamic architecture, Rizvi elucidated their significance as sites for both the validation of religious praxis and the construction of national and religious ideologies. Rizvi delineates the transnational religious, political, economic, and architectural networks supporting mosques in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as in countries within their spheres of influence, such as Pakistan, Syria, and Turkmenistan. She discerns how the buildings feature architectural designs that traverse geographic and temporal distances, gesturing to far flung places and times for inspiration.

6.1.2 IAP – SLIA Cricket Series 2016 The Institute of Architects Pakistan, Karachi Chapter hosted the Sri Lankan Institute of Architects for a series of cricket matches in Karachi from the 26th January to 3rd February, 2016. In February, 2015 SLIA welcoming and gracious hosting had left the IAP team humbled and they eagerly awaited the return opportunity to host them here in Pakistan. Their cricket teams talent, discipline and well-oiled coaching has set a high benchmark and something to aspire towards, a goal which they were keen to achieve. SLIA graciously accepted the invitation to tour Karachi, Pakistan for the return series. The IAP team, led by the Honorary Secretary IAP, Ar. Ramiz Baig put on a spirited performance and fought well against a more formidable and experienced Sri Lankan team. In the end, the SLIA team was the worthy winner and they retained the trophy that they won in the inaugural series last year. Though the result was not in the hosts favor but the IAP team have improved considerably in the short space of time, as is evident from the close nature of the matches as well as feedback from the SLIA cricket team’s management. Apart from the cricket, the Sri Lankan team was hosted for a series of enjoyable events with the intent of showing our guests not only a good time but a softer image of Karachi and Pakistan. These events included a welcome dinner hosted by our event sponsors Benitoz tiles, which was attended by senior members of IAP. The chief guest was the Swiss Council General. Cricket legends, such as Saeed Anwar and Moin Khan also graced the occasion with their presence which served as a boost to the cricket team’s morale before the matches. The Sri Lankan team enjoyed an excursion on the IAP design excellence award winning boat, “Al-Janglee” and the following day were hosted by TPL for a roof top lunch at the Centre Point building, a new addition to the Karachi skyline. Our guests enjoyed discovering the hidden gems of Karachi on board the ‘Super Savari Express’, sitting atop a minibus and travelling through downtown is truly a unique Karachi experience. The Sri Lankans also undertook a guided tour of Chawkandi, Bhanbore, Makli, Thatta and even took a dip in the Karli lake. Their last few activities included a guided tour of the Aga Khan University Hospital and the Mohatta Palace. The event concluded with the award ceremony, the notable performances of the cricket series were as follows:

Exhibition match: Hassan Arshad (Benitoz Tiles)

Men of the series were Ar. Damith perera (SLIA), second highest series runs and most wickets and Ar. Aly Naqvi (IAP) highest series runs. The momentum created by this well-organized IAP event, convened by Hon. Secretary IAP, Ramiz Baig and hosted by the Karachi Chapter under their Chairman, Ar. Arif Changezi should not be lost and we hope that the other chapters will now follow suit. As with every successful event, there is a team effort. Ar. Mujahid Sadiq was instrumental in getting the ground bookings during a hectic Pakistani first class season. Ar. Shamim Alam was responsible for the IAP kit design. Ar. Arshad Faruqui designed the trophies. Ar. Saad Shah helped organize the excursions and Ar. Najeeb Omar who as senior player and mentor even inspired the SLIA team to play on till the golden years. Finally no event is possible without sponsors and the IAP cricket event found a perfect match in Hassan Arshad of Benitoz tiles whose own passion for cricket contributed greatly to the event. The Karachi Chapter looks forward to more inter Chapter cricket series in the future. outstanding Thesis Project on Socially Responsive Architecture titled Socio-Economic Upliftment of Lyari Community through Reorganization of Spaces. The Citation states that the: 1) Design turns around an existing dilapidated building in the heart of Lyari which is already an existing place for community and street activities. 2) The re-use of the building and additions to it not only cater to street activity in a more organized manner but also add and enhance the quality to its social environment. 3) Additions to the building also include a theater which revives a space for a street activity that previously existed in Lyari. 4) The architecture is modest and the design interventions respect that modesty in a sensitive manner. 5) Finally the project is realistic and if executed will go a long way in providing the Lyariites a possibility of healing the wounds of conflict. Architectural details have also been worked out diligently and indicate a depth of understanding of the physical and social context. The presentation communicates the research work and design concepts very clearly through well-presented sketches and 3-D images. The honorable mention is given to Mr. Farrukh Ahmad Salman of Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture for his thesis titled, ‘Panah-e-Salik’. It was a difficult subject giving the nature of the social taboo involved in rag picking activities and its relation to urban space for habitation purposes. The student has accepted the social realities and he, without trying to impose his own views on how the activities of the groups should be carried out, suggests restructuring of the spaces they use. The design essentially consists of reorganizing the living spaces around their most popular ‘place of work’ near garbage dumps below the city flyovers and bridges using mostly re-cycled material. The project has been dealt with much sensitivity and design aesthetics through a consistent thought process. The jury felt that while it would organise the target group it will cause formalised degradation to the urban fabric and the environment.

6.1.8 ARCASIA Students’ Architectural Design Competition 2016

Introduction This is a design ideas competition that invites students in the field of Architecture to contribute ideas and concepts that respond to the theme “Green Lifestyle”. Each country is facing their own sustainability concerns and students are encouraged to identify, at the same time resolve, these issues by using architectural designs. Objectives of the competition Students are free to select a site to come up with design ideas, built or portable or a prototype, which would encourage users to participate in a green and sustainable lifestyle. Students are encouraged to think along lines of cost effectiveness, energy efficiency, low carbon footprint, zero carbon emission and implementable means that may resolve an identified problem found in your particular region of Asia, or one which might even be effective when adapted in many different situations.

from our Students’. The multiplicity in terms of language,

ethnicity and cultures in a way helps the teacher to get to the

level of students & help them learn and rise; this is what I mean

by learning from the students. As architects we have a wonderful profession. We can do so much for

our society being architects. The architect’s profession and all the associations that represent them,

tell us one thing that our architecture, our endeavors and our efforts have to be in the service of the

society, the community and the country. That remains above all the keystone of good architecture.

Thank you very much Commonwealth Association of Architects, the jury and everybody… this is not

just us, we have all deserved it”.

6.3 IAP Rawalpindi - Islamabad Chapter Activities 6.3.1 The Interactive Matrix, Islamabad The interactive matrix conducted on 23 December, 2015 in Islamabad was the first event organized by

IAP – Rawalpindi – Islamabad Chapter after the election of the new committee. It is one of the first of a

series of events that aim to connect professionals and students on a single platform in order to debate

the possibilities in academics and field work of architecture. It was set as a stage for exchange of ideas

and sharing of knowledge.

This session in particular focused on things that lack in the architectural universities of Pakistan and

improvements that should be made at curriculum/ university term level; to produce better

professionals.

Page 41: ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING - IAP · Ar. Shahab Ghani Khan suggested that the AGM report should be uploaded at the IAP website so all IAP members can access the report. He also suggested

Ar. Muhammad Attique gave the opening note and Ar. Azar Raza introduced IAP's latest objective of

making IAP into a research platform which can deliver results on the basis of work done in connection

to the city and the major changes it has gone through recently; in the form of the Metro Bus Project in

Islamabad - Rawalpindi. He outlined why this was necessary and invited intellectuals, academics,

practicing architects and students to come forward with their input to make this initiative a substantial

step in involving IAP into the city. Architects and urban planners after all are stakeholders in the

shaping up of any city.

Three students presented their work to the audience. They spoke about their respective thesis

projects. The students were from different universities. Khola Kiani from NCA, Shah Shamas from SADA

NUST and Salman Amjad from CIIT Islamabad. These projects were the starting point of a discussion on

academics and practice. Curriculum, students and thesis process were the issues addressed. Teacher,

students and young graduates all face certain problems that are inter linked and need to be put on

table for resolution.

The last speaker of the evening was Ar. Ejaz Ahmed Qadri. Developing a discourse, he pointed out

problems about students being good at imagination but unable to resolve their idealism. He said that

drawing was poor in final year but that is a result of some lack in third, fourth, fifth year of university.

Teacher and students both are at fault here. The basics of geometry is absent in some students work

and if that alone is mastered output can be better and more fulfilling.

His focus was on drawing, design, process and instruction; while he was mainly addressing students. A

question and answer session and dinner followed where the 115 attendees of the event were seen

discussing different aspects of the event. Questions still loom and will for a while because this is just

the beginning.

Who runs the academia? Will it be market driven? If so; even that keeps changing. What do we aim for

exactly? So this discussion is still only the start of addressing multiple issues and we still have a long

way to go from here.

Since the annual event of IAPEX provides a platform for architects, engineers, designers, builders, developers, students, building material vendors and the general public to interact under a one roof event; this was the best time to address how all these stakeholders contribute to our field. While most architects showed an interest in the new materials that were exhibited at the event; this time they also got to hear the views of several of their colleagues from the field who came in for IAPEX from different cities of Pakistan. The diversity of opinion that was seen at the forum, in a way represents the differences that IAP – Rawalpindi – Islamabad Chapter is trying to address this term; specifically the situation of the universities that are teaching architecture and design currently. IAP is certainly trying to encourage students to join IAP or look forward to the activities that it is initiating. Entrance Design Competition

In 2009, Institute of Architects, Pakistan (IAP) in its endeavors to raise the standard of ‘ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES’ at Graduate Level in Pakistan instituted the ‘IAP GRADUATE AWARDS FOR ARCHITECTURE’ in order to encourage and acknowledge “Exemplary Final year Architectural Thesis Work” from amongst all accredited schools of Architecture within Pakistan. The Graduate Award envisages the enhancement of the awareness of the role of students of Architecture in the socio-economic and cultural life of the country. The IAP Graduate Award intends to demonstrate that Graduate Studies in Architecture should be seriously taken by the students and that good architecture is a major component of the positive influence on the human environment, and that physical development in Pakistan need not be in disharmony with the cultural values, national identity and the natural environment of the country. This year, the 8th cycle of the Award received twenty-nine entries which were anonymously presented to the Jury. Initially nine projects were shortlisted and subsequently four were selected for further review and deliberations. This resulted in the jury’s recommendation for one award and two honorable mentions. Jurors found a number of interesting projects, but often the objectives were not clearly defined and did not lead to a viable research agenda. In addition, in many cases, the architectural design response was not sympathetic to the physical and social environment. 1 Ali Raza Dawood - University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi; Transformation in architecture - A neighborhood Center for Old city area 2 Annam Arfi - University of South Asia, Lahore; Islamabad International Airport 3 Areeka Amjad - COMSATS Institute of Information and Technology, Lahore; Skins: A study of social anthropomorphism 4 Aujala Naveed Bahadur - College of Art and Design, University of the Punjab, Allama Iqbal Campus, Lahore; Illusionistic Dreamscape - An Entertainment Hub 5 Bilal Ahmed Latif - Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi; Kalamkari - Craft Hub Chiniot 6 Faheem Abrar - Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi; Redefining Edhi Home, Sohrab Goth 7 Faraz Nadeem - Department of Visual Studies, University of Karachi; Spaces - Making them Speak - The Commune 8 Farrukh Ahmad Salman - Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi; Panah-e-Salik, Shelter Seeker 9 Hashim Ashraf - Beaconhouse National University, Lahore; Film and Architecture - Architecture as a backdrop of film 10 Hassaan Jamal - National College of Arts, Rawalpindi Campus; Future of Islamabad Government Housing 11 Hiba Haseeb - NED University, Karachi; Revival of Tourism and Cultural Heritage of Swat 12 Ifrah Bukhari - College of Art and Design, University of the Punjab, Allama Iqbal Campus, Lahore; Designing the Future by Framing the Past 13 Javeria Rauf - COMSATS Institute of Information and Technology, Islamabad; Urban Park (Merging Nature and Architecture) 14 Kiran Musharraf - NED University, Karachi; Urban Observatory as Geo-spatial Intervention at Kohsar

infrastructure. Born to an officer of the forest service in Hyderabad State. Britih India in 1910, Mehdi Ali Mirza was amongst the first generation of formally trained architects in Pakistan. Upon his migration to Pakistan right after the formation of the new state, he was designated to a principal government post in the Public Works Department. Here, he soon realized he could achieve little with the untrained, disorganized workforce he had been provided. To ensure that he had a qualified team to assist him in various tasks, Mirza set about laying the foundations of the first institute in the country imparting professional architectural education, the Government School of Architecture. Eventually, with the assistance of few colleagues, he set up the Institute of Architects, Pakistan in 1950, and the first regulatory framework for the profession in the country. In 1962, he was awarded the Pride of Performance. After 13 years of his death in October 1961, the Mehdi Ali Mirza Award was instituted in 1984 by the Institute of Architects, Pakistan (IAP) in memory of the Founder and First President of IAP. This Award gives recognition each year to the students from each accredited architecture school within Pakistan who have excelled in their studies and graduated securing top position with the highest marks (Cumulative GPA of all five years) in their respective school. This year 19 nominations were received from 18 accredited schools within Pakistan as follows: 1 Salman Amjad - COMSATS Institute of Information and Technology, Islamabad Islamabad 2 Zahida Faiz - COMSATS Institute of Information and Technology, Islamabad 3 Hassaan Jamal - National College of Arts, Rawalpindi Campus 4 Zara Faruqui - School of Art and Design, NUST, Islamabad 5 Murk Soomro - Center of Excellence of Art and Design, MUET, Jamshoro Jamshoro 6 Fatima Mehar - Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro 7 Amna Jan Muhammad - Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi Karachi 8 Aroosa Mushtaq - Department of Visual Studies, University of Karachi 9 Rushad Dastoor - Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi 10 Fahmiyah Fatima Khatri - NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi 11 Ahad Saleem Malik - Beaconhouse National University, Lahore Lahore 12 Maseera Tariq - College of Art and Design, University of the Punjab, Allama Iqbal Campus, Lahore 13 Sarah Masood - COMSATS Institute of Information and Technology, Lahore 14 Hafsa Asad National College of Arts, Lahore 15 Waqas Naveed Akhtar University of South Asia, Lahore 16 Aiman Shafique - University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore 17 Jamal Ahmad - University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar (Abbottabad Campus) Peshawar 18 Muhammad Saqib Ali - CECOS University of IT and Emerging Sciences, Peshawar 19 Farzana Qurban Ali - Balochistan University of IT, Engineering and Management Sciences, Quetta Quetta These 19 graduates were conferred Mehdi Ali Mirza Award in Peshawar at an event organized by IAP –Peshawar Chapter. 6.4.7 Lecture on “Earthquake Resistant Architecture”, Peshawar A lecture series was arranged at Symposium hall CECOS University by department of architecture CECOS University with collaboration of Institute of Architects Pakistan Peshawar chapter. The topic was “Earthquake Resistant Architecture” and lecture was delivered by prof. Engr. Muhammad Javed from University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar. The programme was commenced with the recitation of the holy Quran by Stage Secretary, Ar. Nosheed Ullah Shah. The chairman of Architecture Department, Ar. Adnan Khan welcomed the guests. In his welcome address, he said that we all are affectees of the earthquake directly or indirectly. He said that for the last decades earthquake of intense magnitude here severely hit many countries of the world. Scientist claim that the phenomena of earthquakes will be occurring more frequently in the time to come in which region with higher human settlements and density will be more vulnerable to huge losses. If we recall the earthquake of October, 2005 that hit Mansehra and the Northern region of Pakistan in which 90,000 people lost their lives only due to collapse of many buildings. Even multi stories buildings like Margalla towers, Islamabad collapsed and caused heavy loss to life and property. The situation after the earthquake of 2005 would not have been so bad if the buildings were properly designed for resistance to earthquakes. Hence, this requires awareness, preparedness, and appropriate use of technology for earthquake resistant buildings. As a developing nation, we realize that the marginalized communities could not afford to adopt the modern technologies to construct earthquake resistant buildings, however effort can be made by engineers and architects through research to come up with indigenous, vernacular techniques of construction which can make the buildings more resilient to system earthquakes. After the address of Ar. Adnan Khan, Engineer Muhammad Javed delivered a detail and comprehensive lecture on earthquake resistant architecture. In his lecture he elaborated the causes of earth quakes and collapsing of buildings through earthquakes. He explained that architecture features/designs are very important in buildings configuration, Henry Degenkolb once said that “if we have a poor configuration to start with, the entire engineer can do is to provide a band aid improve a basically poor solution as best he can. Conserver sly, if we start off with a good configuration and a reasonable framing system, even a poor engineer can’t harm its ultimate performance too much.” It means that architects contribution is very important in reducing the risk of buildings through design. Dr. Javed also elaborated different good and poor design for a building’s seismic performance. He beautifully presented that how buildings are twisted due to earthquakes. He mentioned that buildings with re-entrant corners, like those H, T, U, L shaped in plan have sustained significant damages during earthquake. He proposed some solutions for architectural design.

He showed pictures of some buildings in Kashmir which were failed due to same problems. He elaborated that non-structural components such as parapet walls, furniture etc. should be properly anchored to minimize the threats to human lives. His presentation was very much useful and informative for students and professionals and was food for future thoughts. The chief guest for this occasion was Prof. Dr. Riaz Khattak, the Vice Chancellor of CECOS University. In his speech, he welcomed the guest speaker and guests who participated in the event. He appreciated the efforts of IAP and CECOS University for arranging such valuable programmes for students and professionals. He assured full cooperation to the organizers for conducting such activities. He said that this is the responsibility of Architects and engineers to work together to design earthquake resistant buildings for the people. After the address of chief guest, Chairman IAP – Peshawar Chapter, Ar. Muhammad Khalid concluded the programme. He explained that aim of IAP is to give response and create awareness amongst Architects, students and other stakeholders regarding various issues related with built environment. He said that Architects of Pakistan facing many challenges pertaining to energy crises and natural hazards. In natural hazards earthquake is more disastrous due to its uncertainty and substantial loss of properties and human lives. He said that architects have the vital role in mitigating the losses through Architectural design. He thanked to Dr. Javed who spared his time for sharing very precious knowledge with students and professionals. He also thanked to CECOS University as a good partner of IAP – Peshawar Chapter. For supporting to make the event successful.
