opening on Friday, April 10, 2015.

The newest Fifth Third Bank loca-

tion is now open at 8001 W. Golf

Road (at Washington Street), With

a LEED certified new building Niles

Chamber and Village officials met

at the new LEED certified building

to welcome Fifth Third Bank to the area.

This is a third location for the bank in

Niles, and it is one of the first of its kind

to feature a new, high-tech, so-called

“smart ATMs.”

Fifth Third Bank is committed to creating

and sustaining vibrant communities with

emphasis on small businesses and eco-

nomic development programs.

As part of that effort Fifth Third Bank

choose to donate $2,500 to the Niles

Chamber supporting our efforts to pro-

vide resources and opportunities for

local businesses in the Niles area.

We are very pleased to announce the recipients of

the 2015 scholarships. We were overwhelmed

with the response and the caliber of applicants.

Scholarship winners were either Niles residents,

employees of a chamber member or the son/

daughter of an employee of a chamber member.

June 2015

The Village of Niles is rich with a history

of family owned and operated business-

es and Smithereen Pest Management

Services is a perfect example of just

that. Smithereen dates back to the late

1880’s. A pharmaceutical salesman,

E.R. Jennings, came across a safe pesti-

cide that was used by Turkish soldiers

during the 19th Russo-Turkish war to

protect them from lice and fleas. He

began to experiment with similar floral

powders and discovered an effective

pesticide that was not toxic to people.

He packaged and sold it to food plants

and packing houses all over Chicago’s

south side. Jennings became one of the

country’s first professional extermina-

tors. By 1910 Smithereen continued to

develop new and revolutionary pesti-

cides and hire workers that not only

sold the products but also taught cus-

tomers how to apply it.

Four generations later Smithereen is

now led by J.R. Jennings, who is continu-

ing Smithereen's 2nd century of devot-

ed service, ground breaking business

strategies, and a commitment to not

only employees but the communities

Smithereen serves. Smithereen Pest

Management provides a wide variety

of pest control services to commercial

and residential customers in Illinois,

Indiana, Wisconsin, Kansas and Mis-

souri. The Niles location is the compa-

ny’s corporate office.

Their Integrated Pest Management

(aka IPM) solutions are designed to

mitigate the negative impact the pres-

ence of pests can have on a home or

office by emphasizing proactive pest

control and aggressive monitoring. By

focusing on preventative services they

are able to reduce the need to deploy

chemical extermination measures and

minimize the toxicity of the products

and associated health risks. They also

offer Green Pest Management which

satisfies all LEED eligibility require-

ments, Bird Abatement, Wildlife Con-

trol, Termite Control, Spider Control,

Perimeter Treatments and Four Sea-

sons Residential Service.

Congratulations to Smithereen Pest

Management Services on being se-

lected as the Niles Chamber of Com-

merce June 2015 Business of the

Month. Smithereen not only supports

the Niles community but also creates

charitable opportunities for their em-

ployees with Habitat for Humanity,

Greater Chicago Food Depository,

Lurie Children’s Memorial Hospital

and the Lake County Forest Preserves.
