Eco-Nature Spirit

Natural materials such as shells, wood and stones not only enhance comfort but also create accidental patterns. The bathroom accessories are now accompanied by other objects usually seen as part of common areas: lamps, wall art, vases, curtains and rugs, are a few examples. Stone and marble in classic, utilitarian shapes. Colors are subtle and derive from nature.

Eco-Nature Spirit

The Eco-Nature trend focuses very specifically on the pleasure that the tactile beauty of nature brings. Here, we take the raw materials of the earth and transform them by the smallest amount in order to respect their integrity and spirit. Red is a great accent colour for textiles.

The Eco-Nature bathroom makes maximum usage of raw and natural materials in a clean but rustic environment. Stone, marble and ceramics are much in evidence, wood is raw and chunky, while towels are in cotton, and linen mixes have a rustic finish.

The “new” attitude is “old”.When furnishing your home, no matter its age or architectural style, by including some very

old pieces of furniture or decoration you will give it character, a history.

Vintage-Industrial

There's something so charming and nostalgic about adding vintage & antique pieces to your home. When everything in a space is brand-new, it's usually quite obvious and takes some time before the room starts to feel "broken in." By mixing in a vintage chair, artwork, bookcase, accessory, etc., with modern, industrial and classic pieces, you can create a chic and timeless look.

The entire space is warmed by the wooden ceiling panels, which also succeed in making the lofty ceiling appear lower for a more intimate atmosphere; the paneled ceiling effect is played out in other areas too, like the feature wall paneling and the edging of the built in seating nook and entertainment unit.

The industrial is sober and rustic, and is the essence of natural sophistication. Materials are noble and restrained, and include stone, wood, pottery and cast iron. Forms and shapes are ample and rounded. Soft edges and curves can be contrasted with rougher, coarser textures.

The interior communal areas have been furnished in a fun style, reminiscent of cozy living rooms, complete with high-backed armchairs, scattered pillows and woolen pouffes in the rainbow of Google corporate colors, and clusters of small rocking chairs. The meeting room with the waves walls and the ship door make you feel like a captain. Spaces with many meanings! Added to that are the productivity benefits of having happy staff, an increase in prospective clients wanting to visit, and attracting new employees.

Building 4 in Redmond, Washington, is home to the Microsoft campus where the firm’s office innovation team was challenged with the question of how offices will work and appear in 15 years time. The task of determining what an office in the future would look like resulted in the Building 4 prototype, designed by Studio O+A and Microsoft, to contain an entire working community of thinkers, doers, makers and innovators.

Buildings that require little energy for space heating and cooling are becoming common.

Architectural Home Eco-living

Commercial and federal buildings have long paved the way for green building initiatives and industry standard certifications such as Net Zero Energy, LEED Platinum, Green Point Rated, Living Building Challenge Certified, PassivHaus (or Passive House) Certified. All these standards aim for energy efficiency in a building that will result in a reduction of its ecological footprint. Most of these new eco-homes also feature storage tanks for grey water, as well as rainwater harvesting systems to manage and conserve water. The layouts of these homes are thoughtful and respectful of the environment, often incorporating the natural elements in advantageous ways that not only conserve energy, but also enable people to live in harmony with nature.

Living homes is a premier developer and distributor of modern, prefabricated, LEED-certified residential homes to consumers in the US. Some sustainable features include: recycled steel and/or sustainably grown or reclaimed wood, automatic mini-duct air distribution and ventilation systems, recycled bamboo siding and glass tiles, photovoltaic, high-performance windows with recycled frames, and low-flow bathroom fixtures with grey-water plumbing.

In a similar manner, the design of the Low Energy Wooden Home by Storrs Base Architecture utilizes predominantly low-energy lighting and solar water heating. The configuration of the space also allows natural air currents to ventilate the home on hot summer days.

Architectural “Out of the box” Office

In the UK, the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics have dominated the city of London and, for some office workers, it has meant working from home to avoid a busier commute to work. In turn, this has placed a greater focus on the home office environment and made some workers consider investing in a workspace of their own.

If something a little smaller and less home like is what you seek, then the Armadilla may be more suitable, certainly if you plan to create a useful extra space in your garden. A small back garden haven offers architectural freedom. In terms of contemporary design, curved lines have proven to stipulate a more relaxed environment.
