Suicide: The Forever Decision
For Those Thinking About Suicide,
and For Those Who Know, Love, and Counsel Them
Paul G. Quinnett
Review by Hannah Dean
In his eloquently written self-help book, Dr. Quinnett converses with the
suicidal reader, broaching the difficult topic of suicide with honesty,
compassion, and a realistic optimism for the future. Throughout the book, he
communicates his well-reasoned and methodical approach to analyzing
suicide and its effects in a manner that “will make suicide come to make less
sense for the suicidal person,” (Ronald L. Bonner, PsyD). By reassuring them
that they are the author of their life, and furthermore, by empowering them to
make unique and examined decisions, Dr. Quinnett inspires an alternative
perception of suicide in the mind of the troubled reader.

Give Up HOPE! Experienced speakers will present 20 topics on 4 tracks: Individuals
and Families, General Community, Professional, and Faith-Based Communities.
Keynote Presenters
Elizabeth McIngvale, Ph.D. (pictured right) is the founder of the Peace of
Mind foundation, a non-profit dedicated to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Having been diagnosed with OCD herself, Elizabeth has made it her life mission to
make a difference in the lives of those experiencing mental illness. Elizabeth is a
licensed therapist who received her bachelor’s and master’s in social work from
Loyola University Chicago and her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Houston.
Today, she proudly serves as an assistant professor at Baylor University’s Diana R.
Garland School of Social Work. Overall, Elizabeth is dedicated to giving a voice to the
voiceless.
Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale (pictured left) is a Texas-grown phenomenon
who knows how to “Save You Money, TODAY!” In 1981, Mack and his wife Linda
started Gallery Furniture with five thousand dollars and a dream. Mack began
television advertising early on, and with his motto of “Early to bed, early to rise, work
like hell and advertise,” he quickly became a household name. Mack’s strong work
ethic is matched by his philanthropy and exceeded only by the commitment he has
to his family. He has made many charitable contributions, including co-founding the
Peace of Mind foundation.

Suicide: A Growing Public Health Epidemic
By Crystal Lewis
More than 40,000 people die each year from suicide, the 10th
leading cause of death in America(1). In Texas alone, more than 3,000 deaths
by suicide occur each year(2). While there is no single cause of suicide, the
vast majority (90%) of individuals who commit suicide have underlying
mental health or substance abuse conditions(2).
Knowing the warning signs and risk factors of suicide may allow you
to save a life. Warning signs include suicidal threats, increased alcohol and
drug use, aggressive behavior, social withdrawal, dramatic mood swings,
talking or writing about death, reckless behavior, giving away possessions,
saying goodbye to friends and family, and getting affairs in order. Risk factors
include a history of suicide attempts, substance use, intoxication, serious or
chronic mental illness, history of abuse or trauma, isolation, recent tragedy or
loss, sleep deprivation, or prolonged stress. Women are more likely to
attempt suicide than men. People under the age of 24 and over the age of
65 are also more likely to attempt suicide.
What can you do if you think your loved one may be considering
suicide? ASK!
Ask: If you are concerned that your loved one may be considering suicide,
always ask. Seek more information: Seek a private place to talk. Seek to
determine if your loved one has a plan or is at immediate risk, such as
having a plan or having access to firearms or other means. Take immediate
action to ensure safety of your loved one, when necessary. Know when and
where to refer: There are many local and national resources that are
available, such as crisis lines, law enforcement, hospitals, and mobile crisis
teams. It is always a good idea to have valuable numbers easily accessible.
If you or someone you know is considering suicide, please take note of these
important numbers(2).
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-8255 (TALK). In case of
emergencies, dial 9-1-1.
Youth suicide is at the highest it has been in 40 years. Reports show that the
suicide rate for teenage girls, age 15-19, has doubled from 2007 to 2015
and the suicide rate for teenage boys, age 15-19, has increased 30%. Risk
factors for teens include heavy social media use, bullying, economic burdens,
family issues, and exposure to violence.
