Linda has been a volunteer here at the Niagara Falls Humane Society
for 10 years. It can be hard place to work let alone volunteer and
Linda is not only amazing at what she does, but also she brings so
much happiness and love to the shelter. It’s clear to see her love for
the animals. With her fanny pack of cut up hot dogs, knowledge of
dog training she makes the lives of the dogs she walks so much better during there stay with
us. Her title is Dog Walker, but may I say she does SOOOOO much more, such as gardening,
washing walls, training new volunteers, cleaning up the grounds and so on.
DEAN SERRAVALLE / ST. MICHAEL’S HIGH SCHOOL
Dean Serravalle is an English teacher at Saint Michael’s High School,
a freelance journalist and copywriter, the recipient of the Loran
Scholarship Building Student Leaders award and the author of the
critically acclaimed novel, Reliving Charley. His second novel will
be published in the Spring of 2018. Dean has started a voluntary
mentoring program in the Niagara community that promotes the publishing dreams of young
students who are interested in pursuing national scholarships, prestigious publishing credits,
and career opportunities linked to literacy. To date, the program is flourishing and inspiring
many young writers to fulfill their narrative and creative aspirations.

ADAM HOWARD / HEARTLAND FORREST
Adam joined the Heartland Forests team a little over a year ago and
we look forward to seeing his smile each week! He works inside and
out, clearing the trails, checking the tree house and doing maintenance
jobs in and around the Nature Centre. So grateful for you Adam! He
is also part of our Wednesday afternoon wood shop group funded
by Unity for Autism. He along with friends, Stephanie and Jason, help finish products for
Heartland’s Nature Shop. Heartland’s Wood Shop Supervisor Bob Moody says he is a natural!

When Grandpa Beattie started working at Izzard & Bixby bookstore in
downtown St. Catharines, he wasn’t tall enough to ride the delivery
bicycle. By the early 1900’s, he had bought the store and renamed
it Bixby-Beattie Co., and was helping customers–everyone from
students to school boards–get the job done. The company has grown
over almost 160 years, but Grandpa (and Grandma) Beattie’s legacy still lives on: work hard
and put people first. We Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, paint our moustaches blue for Movember,
and raise money for dozens of causes because we make it our business to give back.

Claire Anderson is a graduate from Sheridan College where she found
her passion in sculpture and design. While maintaining an interest in as
many media as possible, glass has offered the versatility to create both
functional and sculptural works while maintaining quality and integrity
in each piece created. She currently owns and operates the business
Studio Vine Glass LTD, alongside her partner Steven Woodruff.
SOPHIA BLOXAM / THE JUKEBOX DINER
Sophia Bloxam opened her 50s themed food truck “The Jukebox
Diner”, in 2015. Since its opening, the community has given it an
extremely warm welcome and Sophia has been happy to serve them
quality food with a unique 50’s themed audio and visual experience.
With hand-selected, butcher-cut meats, fresh-cut fries and local farm-
fresh vegetables for condiments, Sophia tries her best to offer her customers the healthiest
food options possible. People keep coming back for the great food, but it’s the excellent
service which Sophia likes to call “family serving family” that really keeps them coming back.

With eleven years of in-salon experience, Lisa is the proud owner of

Nutritionist designation. They’ve worked with the Fallsview Casino Group to supply health foods to celebrities such as Ringo Starr, Jennifer Hudson and Heart. DR. DEEPA SHARMA / NORTH TOWN DENTISTRY
Dr. Sharma did her Bachelor of Dental Surgery in India. Shortly after
she was accepted to Boston University - Goldman School of Dental
Medicine where she did her training and acquired her Doctor of Dental
Medicine (DDM) in 2009. Since then, she has served the community of
Niagara Region. She opened her own practice in Niagara Falls, North
Town Dentistry, in 2015. She believes that dental pain can come anytime and so should the
Dental care too Her motive for her office is “ To treat the future generations of my Patients”.
LISA THOMAS / ADVENTURE ROOMS CANADA
In 2013, after personal and professional hardships, Lisa bravely
set out on a solo backpacking tour of 21 countries. While visiting
Switzerland, she discovered a unique concept, thereafter launching a
popular industry with the 1st “60 minute” Escape Game in Canada.
Fans loved the concept so much that they became #1 on TripAdvisor
for all of Ontario within months! Within 3 years, AdventureRooms has 6 games, 2 locations,
and 20 employees. As President and CEO, Lisa is constantly striving to make customers and
employees happy and to improve the industry.”
YOUTH CITIZENOF THE YEAR AWARD
This Award celebrates a student who exhibits excellence, is involved in the community and contributes to the local business culture. Our five local high schools submit nominees for this award.
HARROOP AHUJA / WESTLANE SECONDARY
Harroop Ahuja is currently attending Westlane Secondary school. Some
of the activities he participates in are: Royal Canadian Air Cadets,
Niagara Regional Police Pipe Band, soccer, and DECA, which is a
competition where young leaders compete in business related events.
His 1,500 volunteering hours has helped him understand how he can
contribute to his community. Continuously helping with the legion, Niagara United Soccer Club
and the nursing home. He has learned that it is only with focus, passion, belief and support
that one can truly attain success in all of his or her endeavors.

ARTEMIDA BODOUNOVAST. PAUL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOLMy name is Artemida Bodounova. I attend St. Paul Catholic High School in Niagara Falls, and am in Grade 12. I was born in Moscow, Russia but have lived for almost my entire life in Canada. Over the last four years, I’ve gained experience volunteering in many different events
and locations. I’ve served pasta and pancakes, sold sweets to churchgoers, given historical tours, planted tulips, organized garage sales and directed visitors to events. Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose in life, and I enjoy being a part of something bigger than myself.
EGAN HENDERSON / STAMFORD COLLEGIATEMy name is Egan Henderson, I am in Grade 12 at Stamford Collegiate. As a student I am a member of the Students’ Council, the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee, Brock Youth Engagement Committee, School Reach, and the school band. I am currently employed at Tim Hortons located on Clifton Hill. I am an academic student, with high
marks through grades 9-12. I am an active member of my community and help out with various events in school and outside of school.
JULIA HODGSON / A.N. MYER SECONDARY SCHOOLJulia Hodgson is a seventeen year old student at A.N Myer Secondary School who is avidly involved in many extra curricular activities and initiatives. For years Julia has danced competitively, played soccer, been apart of swim team and served on her schools student council. Julia is also involved throughout her community and currently
volunteers with Heart Niagara. In years to come Julia aspires to become a doctor and serve others through Doctors Without Borders.
DHVANI SHAHSAINT MICHAEL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOLDhvani is a hard-working young lady that’s actively involved in the school and community. She’s currently the Saint Michael Student Council President and last year she was a member of the NCDSB Student Senate. Dhvani has been a member of the Student Vote
Committee, the Niagara Region Public Health Youth Advisory Committee and was a COLS Ambassador. With over 200 hours of community service, she’s described by teachers as “an excellent leader with an awareness and compassion for social causes” Dhvani is an extraordinary student who is respected by her teachers and peers.
