The affluent part of the world has built its richeson an ability to develop superior technical and ITsystem in all aspects of our daily life.

The development of automation and pro -duction with robots are moving rapidly forward. There has been made some scary comments, describing the world in 30 to 50 years time wherepractically everything today performed by human

hand or mind, can be done better by robots andother super-technical installations. This develop-ment has already reached a stage where manytypes of production outsourced to countries likeChina, India, Bangladesh only relatively few yearsago, are now redirected back home to their origi-nal production area where cost due to automationetc. has again become competitive.

From the secretary

Per Grieg sr

“ Let us try tosave the worldone child at atime ”

Comments are also now being made describ-ing a near future, i.e. 20–30 years down the road, where 20 million human working places in USAalone will be erased due to automation androbot competition.

All this is happening during a period wherethere is another revolution going on: Hundredsof millions of people around the world, today liv-ing under poverty limit, will be raised to a moredignified life with proper nutrition and access toat least a basic education.

In Africa the average family produces morechildren than in Europe and America. This willchange in the next 10–20 years as many of thetraditional killer illnesses in Africa will be con-trolled parallel with reduced hunger andincreased education. In Europe, the 70 years ofpeace and constructive development have leadto high productivity, high living standard and a

negative birth rate. Such a scenario could easilylead to a serious redistribution of people acrosscontinents, and create new demographic situa-tions.

The above deliberations are meant to remindus that in this extremely interesting and fast-moving world of ours, challenges are and will beabundant.

For us as a small player on the internationalscene, we must only try as best we can to positionour means in projects which we at any time feelhelpful under the prevailing conditions. It is easyto be despondent as things get complicated. Then there is a lot of comfort in the saying: “Let us try to save the world one child at thetime”.

Bergen National Opera (BNO)”The Golden Cockerel”

The brilliant Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908) wrote his lastopera as a fairy tale, but the authorities in his homeland were not fooled: Behindthe opera’s seductive surface of sensual music and exotic stories lies a story ofbiting criticism of the Tsar and his efforts in the Russian-Japanese war.

Performed with great success in Grieghallen in 2014 by Bergen National Operain cooperation with Edvard Grieg Choir and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
