in reltively little time nelson Mndel Metropolitn University (nMMU)
hs estlished positive nd rising reputtion - especilly in the res
of science, usiness nd technology studies - with good lour mrket
synergies.
We host numer of exciting, in some cses pioneering, reserch nd
development odies in key res such s utomotive mechtronics,
chemicl technology, energy, informtion nd telecommuniction studies,
nd conservtion ecology, to nme ut few. our links with industril
nd scientific councils re highly cclimed. Mny of our top reserchers
nd postgrdute students re deeply engged in pplied reserch nd
technology development projects. These mke mjor contriution to
industry nd commerce in the city, province nd wider south Afric.
overll, however, nMMU’s reserch profile is low in reltion to its size.
There is scope to improve in line with ntionl priorities. The current nMMU
strtegy to chieve this improvement is, in my view, right on trget: we need
to seed nd intensify our growth.
our gol is to rise reserch productivity cross the cdemic spectrum. We
will intensify support for uilding criticl mss round key reserch niches
identified in the nMMU institutionl operting Pln.

nMMU’s Reserch, Technology nd innovtion (RTi) strtegyA forml nMMU Reserch, Technology nd innovtion (RTi) strtegy ws
developed in 2007 in consulttion with the nMMU RTi committee nd the
Fculty RTi committees. sente nd council pproved the strtegy lte in
2007 nd full implementtion will strt this yer. it follows the vision of the
university: to e the leder in optimising the potentil of our communities
towrds sustinle development in Afric. it ims to chieve this vision y:
4 contriuting to the trnsformtion nd development of our communities
through reserch, technology nd innovtive solutions;
4 empowering our institution, stff, grdutes nd communities to
contriute nd compete, oth loclly nd interntionlly, s reserchers
of note;
4 continuing to conduct reserch projects tht relte to society’s needs.
our reserch strtegy ims to crete n environment tht uilds reserch
gend through the interction of reserchers, users of knowledge nd
criticl decision mkers. it is sed on three key principles:
1. The development of criticl mss of cdemic nd student reserchers
in  limited numer of focus res;
2. The cretion of n environment tht encourges the development of
reserch culture nd reserch ethos;
3. The role of the university in promoting trnsformtion nd diversity of
experience in terms of rce, gender nd ge to chieve socil justice.
The strtegy recognises the importnce of criticl inquiry, s well s the need
to ddress societl chllenges in terms of welth cretion nd improving
qulity of life. its min components re:
4 Developing reserch nd innovtion themes tht ddress ntionl, region-
l nd locl impertives underpinning the eight cdemic focus res;
4 ensuring tht reserch strtegies re sperheded y reserch entities
– structures estlished y fculties to pursue reserch in focused,
multidisciplinry mnner;
4 nurturing humn resources for reserch;
4 Allocting the mjority of reserch resources to reserch nd innovtion
themes, with incentives to encourge reserch collortion nd qulity;
4 Developing strong culture of vlue-dding reserch support.
support services nd fculties re plnning jointly on wys to implement
these key components. Progress in implementtion will e evluted y
monitoring inter alia postgrdute student numers, pulictions, ptents
nd licences nd the progress of individul reserchers, including their nRF
rtings.

When it comes to understnding these gentle gints, zoology professor
grhm Kerley is t the top of his gme, with reserch tht is not only
influencing government policy ut lso sprking interest worldwide.
Fced with chllenge, Prof Kerley sees n opportunity. “it’s only chllenge
ecuse you don’t understnd it, nd science is ll out improving your
understnding.” This he continully seeks to do with numer of reserch
projects, most focusing on the elephnts t Addo elephnt ntionl Prk.
he seeks to shpe ntionl government policy nd hs fetured on the
pges of the world’s most prestigious science journl, Nature. Ultimtely,
he hopes his reserch will enefit future genertions.
Prof Kerley heds up nMMU’s centre for Africn conservtion ecology (Ace)
nd is non-executive director of the estern cpe Prks Bord, on which he
chirs the conservtion committee. he won wrds for his efforts lst yer,
including eing judged ctegory winner for environmentl conservtion in
the nelson Mndel By’s citizen of the Yer Awrds.
Although his reserch interests re mny, he concentrtes on niml-plnt inter-
ction, deling specificlly with meg-herivores such s elephnts nd rhino.
in his work on the Addo elephnts – one of the world’s est-documented
elephnt popultions, with records dting ck to 1931 – Kerley hs studied
two min spects: elephnt iology for effective conservtion mngement,
nd how the iology of the niml cn e linked with its impct on the
environment.
For his expertise in elephnt mngement nd conservtion he serves on
the scientific Round Tle, convened y environmentl Affirs nd Tourism
Minister Mrthinus vn schlkwyk. he is led uthor of chpter on
elephnt impcts for scientific ssessment of elephnt mngement in
south Afric, criticl document tht will guide future ntionl elephnt
mngement policy nd prctice.
his other current reserch interests include desertifiction, the ecologicl
nd economic opportunities round privte reserves in the estern cpe
(reserch which is lso eing used y government to inform policy ntion-
lly) nd the reintroduction of predtors. Projects in the pipeline include
reserch into the ecologicl consequences of elephnt contrception. “This
will present huge opportunity for students to e involved in cutting-edge
science,” sys Prof Kerley.
Kerley works hnd-in-hnd with students. “student involvement is criticl.
it’s wht keeps me interested in science: when you work with young people,
they chllenge you nd force you to revise your thinking.” his work with
oth the estern cpe Prks Bord nd the Minister of environmentl Affirs
nd Tourism ensures his reserch is linked to rel world conservtion. “i help
them identify prolems, nd cn thus tech the students out rel-world
issues. This grounds you in relity. You cn’t e n ivory tower scientist.”
in July lst yer, Kerley nd his tem hosted more thn 1600 interntionl
scientists nd conservtion experts, from 87 countries, t the 21st Annul

NMMU’s unique Kilo-Lab, launched last year by the university’s internationally-recognised Institute for Chemical Technology (InnoVenton), is taking strides to develop South Africa’s downstream chemical industry, in line with national government strategy.
The R5m Kilo-L is fcility for the scle-up of smll-scle, lortory-
developed chemicl processes to kilogrm quntities. its cpility to prove
chemicl processes on kilogrm scle ridges gp tht smll opertions
with limited resources cnnot. it will enle sMMe’s (smll Medium nd
Micro enterprises) to develop chemicl-mnufcturing processes in order
to prove concept. it will ply mjor role in ttrcting project support, so
enling projects tht would otherwise not e considered y innoVenton’s
Downstrem chemicl Technology sttion (DcTs).
Dr gry Dugmore, deputy director of innoVenton’s Technology
Demonstrtion, sys: “This clerly illustrtes the potentil of this fcility
to rpidly develop nd trnsfer technology to contriute to uilding
new genertion of downstrem chemicl usinesses in south Afric, nd
prticulrly in the estern cpe.”
By the time the Kilo-L ws lunched, it hd lredy completed one
product-development project nd severl smll-scle mnufcturing
contrcts. its next mjor project is the mnufcture of n insect
repellent ctive ingredient, using soon-to-e ptented micro-structured
rector technology. The unit lso plys n importnt role in teching.
Postgrdute chemistry students cn complete one-yer internship in the
Kilo-L. operting within strict industril stndrds of helth, sfety nd
environment, it prepres grdutes for the rel world of industril chemicl
mnufcturing.
innoVenton director Professor Ben Zeelie sys: “My iggest drive nd drem
is to help our students to discover the inventor in themselves, nd to steer
ech one on his/her own voyge of discovery, guided y his/her own privte
chrt into world tht is ll gtes, ll opportunities.”

The Western world tends to e scepticl of the plnt rews prescried y
trditionl helers, ut collortion of nMMU reserchers delving
into the medicinl properties of indigenous plnts hs yielded surprising
results.
Dietes, cncer nd hiV-Aids hve een proven to enefit from indigenous
plnt extrcts, which could spell cheper medicinl lterntives, prticulrly
for impoverished sufferers in rurl estern cpe res where the plnts grow
freely.
eight yers go, community leder Mike Pntsi sked Dr Mryn vn de
Venter, senior lecturer in the Deprtment of Biochemistry nd Microiology,
to test indigenous plnts typiclly prescried y trditionl helers. Wht
trnspired ws working reltionship etween nMMU nd trditionl
helers, nd the estlishment of medicinl grden where the plnts
cultivted re used for heling nd reserch.
Dr Vn de Venter sys: “We found tht the diseses most commonly treted
y trditionl helers were dietes, cncer, sexully-trnsmitted diseses
nd hiV-Aids, so we mde these our focus. We strted screening for nti-

“We hve seen progress in ll these fields – it hs converted me!”
on nti-cncer screening, she sys: “We found tht the plnts induced
poptosis, where the cncer cells re stimulted to kill themselves – the est
method to cure cncer. While the tests were crried out in vitro (test tues),
there re indictions tht the process could lso work in humns.”
in reserching hiV-Aids, iochemist Dr Vughn oosthuizen found tht n
extrct from the indigenous plnt Sutherlandia frutescens inhiited the virl
reverse trnscriptse enzyme, therey inhiiting the virus.
Anti-dietic screening conducted in vivo (in rts) hs lso yielded
impressive results, where the sme plnt (Sutherlandia frutescens) ws
found to decrese insulin-resistnce in rts, therey reversing dietes.
Physiologist Dr srtjie Roux sys, “Dietes worldwide is growing
exponentilly fster thn forecst predictions. To hve one of our own plnts
yielding positive results is very exciting.” The plnt ws found to e sfe in

Volkswgen south Afric, the germn Acdemic exchnge service (DAAD)
nd the University of Brunschweig/Wolfenüettel in germny.
The two-yer-old prtnership – the VWsA-DAAD interntionl chir in
Automotive engineering – equips engineers for work in the region’s
utomotive industry with its strong link to glol industry nd usiness. it lso
gives rise to reserch nd development inititives which serve the industry.
Professor hinrich holdck-Jnssen from the institute of Automotive
engineering in Wolfsurg sys Port elizeth’s utomotive industry needs
well-educted engineers, prticulrly in the fields of utomotive production
nd mnufcturing.
“Well-linked reserch coopertion with universities is essentil to develop
new systems nd prts, nd optimise processes in production nd
mnufcturing. The overll reserch field is utomotive engineering nd
mnufcturing, which integrtes systems nd controls, mterils nd

A numer of cler strengths within the institution’s eight institutionl
cdemic focus res hve een identified, including:
4 The environment nd ecology (including environmentl lw),
4 Mrine nd estury studies,
4 optic fires nd electron microscopy,
4 Mthemtics nd science eduction,

4 iT progrmming nd iT systems support,
4 Acdemic development (especilly for disdvntged students).
According to the university’s strtegic reserch pln, one to three reserch
focus res will e identified in ech fculty in 2008. Most resources will
e directed towrds these res, with the im of estlishing reserch

4 Three reserch institutes,
4 Three reserch centres.
4 15 reserch units.
During 2007 the policy governing the estlishment, opertion nd review
of entities ws further developed. The ojective ws to crete centres of
