John The Baptist / Juan el Bautista
John answered them, “I baptize with water; but there is one
among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming
after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”
(Jn 1:26-27)
- Jn 1, 26-27

GOSPEL MEDITATION
“There is one ... coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not
worthy to untie.” Untying sandal straps was no prestigious job.
In the days of John the Baptist, those straps would have been
especially unpleasant to deal with. Besides the usual odors that
accompany sockless leather footwear, there would have been the
grime and dirt from the sandy roads and paths that swirled around

is coming after me,” he is putting himself in a very humble position.
And rightly so.
John realizes that the Christ--the Anointed One, the Messiah--is so
far above him, so far above any of us, that we are truly unworthy
of him. Indeed, the Son of God is not just the greatest of men; he
is God-made-man and in his presence we most appropriately should bow in humble homage. Yet this God
chose to stoop down to our human level and walk among us. He chose to get his sandals dirty. And still
today he chooses to allow us to encounter him as a friend and companion.
But as John reminds us by his example, this encounter with the Lord is not the result of our own merits or

perfectly holy.” Indeed it is God who does the perfecting, not us by our own power. So let us approach the
Lord this Advent season with a spirit of hopeful humility, trusting that God alone can make us worthy of
welcoming his Son.

Lay Carmelites of St. Therese of the Holy Eucharist…men and women who are guided by Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Prophet Elijah, as they follow in the footsteps of the great Carmelite saints like Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Therese the Little Flower, Elizabeth of the Trinity, to name a few.
You do not have to be a priest or religious to attain holiness. You are invited to grow in the
dual spirit of Contemplation and Action, within a community of prayer and service to others, while living your present state in life (married or single). We meet every 3rd Saturday of the month at St. Anne. If you are 18 and above, this may be what you are looking for…to take you to the next level of relation-ship with Our Lord!

Christmas Mass Obligations Helpful Guide:
Christmas falls on Monday this year which means that you need to plan ahead for meeting your Sunday obligation and your Christmas Mass obligation. There is no one Mass that “counts” for both. You therefore have to consider several -754-0%!(-.!#-8!5-!()*+**!,-).!/)01',!'01!Christmas Mass obligations this year. Here are the combinations:

3) Go to a Sunday Morning Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Sunday evening Mass (Christmas obligation)

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, CGS, is a Montessori based method of religious education which takes place in a prepared
space called the atrium. “The themes presented in the atrium are those to which the children
have responded with depth and joy. These themes are taken from the Bible and the liturgy (prayers and sacraments) as the fundamental sources for creating and sustaining Christian life at every developmental
stage and, in particular, for illuminating and nourishing the child in his/her most vital religious needs.”
CGS serves children ages 3-12. Preparation for sacraments begins as early as second grade with
reconciliation, and continues the following catechetical year with Confirmation and First Holy Communion. For
more information, please contact Micheal at (480) 507-4451 or [email protected]

Catholic Action – The MovementWhat is the purpose of Catholic Action? Pope Paul VI describes in his own words: “The immediate aim of organizations of this kind (Catholic Action) is the Church’s apostolic aim, that is, the evangelization and sanctification of men and the formation of a Christian conscience among them so that they can infuse the spirit of the Gospel into various communities and departments of life.” This aim is the same as that of Catholics in Action here at St. Anne, which is to bring all souls to Christ. For more information on Catholics in Action, visit www.catholicsinaction.org.
