Dear friends in the Lord, As I write this on Tuesday, I have just returned from a week of vacation. And how much has happened in our world since I left just 8 days ago! The dreadful murders in Charleston; the publication of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si. I realize that, in this age of instant electronic communication, many people expect an immediate response to world events from their churches and pastors—across a multitude of media. I had to laugh when I saw in last Sunday’s online edition of The New York Times an invitation to report what was said at Sunday Mass in your parish about Pope Francis’ encyclical. It had only been released on Thursday, and it runs to 184 pages! And yet there was an expectation that in the intervening two days pastors and preachers would have found time between appointments, sick calls, Masses, confessions, weddings and funerals to read the encyclical, understand it and digest it in such a way that something sensible and helpful could be said about it at Mass. I’m sure an even greater expectation is present when horrors like the Charleston murders take place. When our hearts are broken and our consciences outraged, we naturally come to Sunday worship hoping to hear healing and consoling words. For priests of my temperament, there is always a suspicion of facile words spoken too quickly about events that really demand silence and contemplation first. But I remember T.S. We will spend our lifetimes trying to understand how such demonic hatred comes about. We might well spend a lifetime also contemplating the grace, mercy and forgiveness that we witnessed among the survivors. Dear friends in the Lord,

As I write this on Tuesday, I have just returned from a week of vacation.

And how much has happened in our world since I left just 8 days ago! The

dreadful murders in Charleston; the publication of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si.

I realize that, in this age of instant electronic communication, many

people expect an immediate response to world events from their churches

and pastors—across a multitude of media. I had to laugh when I saw in last

Sunday’s online edition of The New York Times an invitation to report what

was said at Sunday Mass in your parish about Pope Francis’ encyclical. It

had only been released on Thursday, and it runs to 184 pages! And yet there was

an expectation that in the intervening two days pastors and preachers would have

found time between appointments, sick calls, Masses, confessions, weddings and

funerals to read the encyclical, understand it and digest it in such a way that

something sensible and helpful could be said about it at Mass.

I’m sure an even greater expectation is present when horrors like the

Charleston murders take place. When our hearts are broken and our consciences

outraged, we naturally come to Sunday worship hoping to hear healing and

consoling words. For priests of my temperament, there is always a suspicion of

facile words spoken too quickly about events that really demand silence and

contemplation first. But I remember T.S. Eliot’s wise observation that “there are

some things about which we can say nothing, but before which we dare not keep

silent.”

I regret that I was not with you last weekend to pray in solidarity with the

victims and survivors in Charleston. We will spend our lifetimes trying to

understand how such demonic hatred comes about. We might well spend a

lifetime also contemplating the grace, mercy and forgiveness that we witnessed

among the survivors.

Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

CATHOLIC FOUNDATION OF NORTH GEORGIA

SUMMER REMINDERS

We are thrilled to announce that IHM has been awarded a Parish

Enrichment Grant of $1,000 from the Catholic Foundation of

North Georgia. The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia was

established in 1992 to support the ministries and schools of the

Archdiocese of Atlanta with grants from the earnings of

endowment funds.

These funds will go to GriefShare, a grief support program used

by our parish grief ministry, Stepping Stones. GriefShare support

groups meet weekly to help those who have suffered a loss in their

lives face the challenge of feeling optimistic about their future and find others

who can understand the hurt they feel.

We are in the process of organizing the team of facilitators for a GriefShare

support group and plan to offer the seminar on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-

9:00 p.m. beginning on September 16. More details to follow. For more

information, contact either Brenda Uhler of the Stepping Stones Ministry at

[email protected] or Deacon Bob Hauert at [email protected].

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM

June 21-July 4 The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness will take

place from June 21 to July 4, 2015, a time when our

liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who

remained faithful in the face of persecution by political

power—St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the

Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the

Church of Rome. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus

on the "freedom to bear witness" to the truth of the Gospel.

VOLUNTEERS FOR ENGLISH CLASSES NEEDED

Starting in July Make a big impact in someone's life! Help adults learn to

speak English by serving one morning or evening each week in

Chamblee. The students are friendly, interesting and grateful

for the time volunteers offer. The students attend two classes a

week, mornings or evenings for three hours. The students are

with the lead instructor for the first hour, in one large group.

Then they are divided into smaller groups, based on their abil-

ity to speak English, and taught by volunteers for the last two

hours. During this time, our goal is for the students to speak as

much as possible.

Classes are offered Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and Thurs-

day from 9:00 AM to noon and from 6:00-9:00 p.m. We seek

a commitment for one class per week for four months. We

will be starting up new classes in mid-July ending in early

FAITH FORMATION TEAM

Faith Formation at IHM has a unique name: G.I.F.T. (Growing In Faith Together)

As our new season approaches we have immediate openings for individuals desiring

to be part of bringing the G.I.F.T. of faith to the lives of fellow parishioners and

themselves. Become a part of this fast growing community. Most positions require

no previous experience and offer the compensation of satisfaction, knowledge, an

opportunity to serve that pays for a lifetime.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

By nature of our Baptism, we are all called to share our gifts with the Church. We

are looking for adults and high school teens who are interested in assisting on

Saturdays and Sundays sessions. It takes many people, working together in many

ways, for the parish religious education program to work well. Your volunteer

commitment might be long-term or one-time, but everyone's participation is

valuable. Here are brief descriptions of volunteer roles you might consider:

Catechists (individuals willing the share their faith with children, youth,

adults.) NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Responsible for planning, teaching

and managing a class of children for a weekly period of 1.5 hours. Use several

kinds of interactive methods, including lecture, discussion, text, activities, film

and video, games, worksheets, etc. Training materials provided along with a

sense of belonging and well being when you share your faith with others.

Requires Safe Environment Training and Background Check.

Children K-6th sessions as well as adults are held on Saturdays (2-3:30p.m.)

and Sundays (10:15a.m. - 11:15a.m.)

Middle School Group (6th-8th) meets on Wednesdays from 7p.m.-8:30p.m.

High School Group (9th-12th) meets on Sundays 3-4:30p.m.

We are also seeking individuals who speak Spanish to work with our young

children and adults. Which age group would you like to work with?

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) We are seeking active

practicing Catholics that are willing to share their journey of faith with

individuals wishing to find out more about the Catholic way of life. RCIA group

meets on Sunday mornings from 10:15a.m. - 11:30a.m. August thru May. Please

consider being a part of a sponsor pool.

ALSO, we have a RCIA inquiry session on June 24th. Are you thinking about becoming Catholic or returning to the Church? Or perhaps you're just curious

about why we do some of the things we do, or what the Church really teaches on

certain subjects. We have a small faith community that will meet monthly this

summer to help you explore these questions. Join us in the lower level of the

church from 7:30-9:00 p.m. You do not have to register, simply come and

explore the basics of Catholic faith in a friendly, informal setting. Contact Drew

Denton ([email protected]) for more information.

Por la naturaleza de nuestro bautismo, somos llamados a compartir nuestros

dones con la Iglesia. Buscamos adultos y jóvenes (High School) que estén

hacerlo bien. Su compromiso voluntario puede ser a largo plazo o ayudar de

June 28: Using Insurance to Help Your Parish

Some people have old insurance policies they no longer need. These can be donated to your parish to help reduce

their debt, or be a gift to a capital campaign or they can be given to the Catholic Foundation for the parish endow-

ment fund. If you are one of these people and need assistance about how to make a gift of insurance please visit

our website: www.cfnga.org.

“All This I Do For the Sake of the Gospel”

We have reached our pledge goal for 2015! If you have not already

made a pledge, or have not yet begun to pay on your pledge, please

prayerfully consider contributing to the Annual Appeal. Visit

http://appeal.archatl.com to make your pledge today!

Thank you to the 642 donors who helped up reach our pledge goal!

Remember, every cent that is collected over the goal will come

directly back to the parish. These are funds that can help us better

live out our mission to continue the work of Jesus.

SECOND COLLECTION In the second collection today, we are

supporting Pope Francis in his charitable

works. The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken

up worldwide to support the most disadvan-

taged: victims of war, oppression, and natural

disasters. This is an opportunity to join with

our Holy Father, Pope Francis and be a

witness of charity to our suffering brothers

and sisters. Please be generous in today’s

collection.

TRUST IN THE HOLY SPIRIT’S GENTLE AND PERSISTENT PROMPTINGS How can we know what or how much we need to serve, give, share, or care? When we feel something

touch our heart that calls us beyond ourselves for the sake of another, we can be sure the Holy Spirit is

calling. Trust in that gentle yet persistent call, and respond as generously as you are able. “The point is

this: the one who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap

bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion,

for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Cor 9:6-7)
