ANNOUNCEMENT – ROYAL DECREE
As per the recently announced Royal
Decree in the Saudi Gazette, the
Ministry of Education has confirmed
that this applies to all schools in The
Kingdom. Therefore, as per The Royal
Decree, the final day that the school
will be open for teaching purposes will

THE 2019 – 2020 PARENT HANDBOOK! The Parent Handbook is now available on the NIS Website. All parents are advised to refer to this publication and be familiar with the policies it contains. The policies contained within are applicable to all parents, without exception, and your adherence is expected at all times.
ATTENDANCE
International research suggests that absence from school undermines the learning process. Unless there is an extremely good reason, all NIS students MUST to
be in school every day. Parents are REQUIRED to contact the school on the first day of the child's absence to inform us of reason for the absence. In addition, NIS has a strict policy on attendance during the three “end of term” examination sessions. Parents must not arrange holidays during this time.
Please note that we have policies on providing work for children when they are absent from school. These can be found on the
school website in the Parent Handbook.
SENIOR AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES
Students and parents are reminded that any after school classes for G9-12 are compulsory for all students.
Students are not permitted to ‘opt out’.
{This could be amended as a result of The Royal Decree}
TEST & EXAMINATION PAPERS
Please note that ordinarily NIS does not review test and examination papers with parents. This is not an activity that enhances the learning of the child.
Please refer to the Parent Handbook on the school website for further details.
“The mission of Nada International School is to provide exemplary international education so that students may acquire the necessary academic, personal and social knowledge, skills and qualities to move on to other schools, establishments of higher education, or into a career with a high degree of justifiable confidence .”
SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
The NIS Calendar offers three formal opportunities to meet with teachers. As these days are on weekends the school will be closed for one day to compensate teachers for the loss of their weekend. Parent Teacher Conference details will be sent to all parents by Mrs. Hana Dossary closer to the event.

ARRIVAL TIMES
The NIS school day is devised to allow children of all ages to have structured learning time and supervised socialization time.
PLEASE ENSURE YOU CHILD IS AT SCHOOL BEFORE 7.20 am EACH DAY.
STUDENTS WHO ARRIVE TO SCHOOL LATE DISRUPT THE LEARNING PROCESS FOR OTHERS.
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT NIS TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELFARE OF CHILDREN WHO ARRIVE VERY EARLY, BEFORE 7:00 AM, AND ONLY LIMITED SUPERVISION IS AVAILABLE FROM 0700 – 0715.
Please note that children who repeatedly arrive late for school when travelling in private transport will
a) Be made to wait in Administration for one full period. b) Students who are frequently made to wait in
Administration will be sent home from school and will miss the whole day.
I was born in Corsica in 1769. I famously staged a ‘coup d’état’, which eventually led to me becoming the Emperor of France. I stated “Alexander, Caesar,
Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius?” - Who am I and
what am I famous for?
The winners will be drawn from the box each week and will be in the newsletter. As a prize, each winner will be given Golden Ticket from Mr. Tony. Each correct answer will receive merits.
Only one answer per student will be accepted. It must be in the form of a ‘special answer sheet – such as a poster’. The poster must be the individual work of each student. No duplicate copies from siblings will be permitted.
UNWANTED ITEMS – Mobile Phones
Almost all mobile phones are now equipped with a camera. Having cameras, taking pictures and videos in school is strictly prohibited in KSA and by the Ministry of Education. Unless, directly requested by a teacher, as part of a lesson, any use of mobile phones or devices that can act as mobile
phones, is strictly prohibited. Children who wish to speak to parents can only do so from the Student Counsellor’s or Primary Supervisor’s office (after taking permission).
STUDENTS CAUGHT USING MOBILES, TAKING PHOTOS
WITH MOBILES OR DISTURBING CLASS WITH MOBILES, OR
OTHER INTERNET ENABED COMMUNICATION DEVICES,
WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL.
PROJECTS – TERM 2 – G4 – 8
ICT & Social Studies
Projects are an important tool used to improve the imagination and understanding of students. Students
tend to indulge more in class and understand the lesson more thoroughly through completing such assignments. Projects are a mandatory task for all students from grades 4-8 as it will count towards part of their end of term grade for the subjects involved. All parents of children in G4 – 8 should visit the school website. This is the location of all the projects for ICT and Social Studies for children in G4-8, which are undertaken in Term 2. These projects are compulsory for all G4 – 8 children and form part of the report card grades for these subjects. Details of the grading system can be found in the NIS Parent Handbook, which is available on the NIS website. Late submissions will be downgraded. Teachers will be explaining the projects to children during WK 17 (5 January – 9 January, 2020) in the classroom and will be devoting some time to this endeavour. However, all G4 – 8 students are required to devote some of their own time to developing these projects, which are due for submission from all students on 20 February 2020. The syllabus distribution provides parents/students a general overview of what students will come across throughout the academic year. They outline the chapters and lessons the students in each grade will study during each term. This helps students plan their studies ahead and hence, always be ready for class. Being prepared prevents study congestion and is essential to building study plans and routines. The syllabus distribution for all grades HAVE BEEN available on the website since 8th September.

IGCSE / AS / A Level - May / June
2020 Examinations
All the information has been collected from our students in G10 – G12 ready for registration. Information forms were sent home with students at
the beginning of the academic year. The students also filled in the estimated entries, which gives us a good idea of how many subjects and examinations our students will register for. The registration process has begun, Mr Ansir has sent home registration forms with all the necessary information. Please could read the registration details carefully and send in the forms back to school ASAP with the relevant payment, so we can get all our students registered when the registration opens.
G10 students and parents (particularly from Egypt / Jordan) need to read the information document regarding the new grading scale very carefully, so you can make the right choice when selecting which exams to sit.
NIS NO LONGER ACCEPTS ANY PRIVATE CANDIDATES UNLESS THEY CAN PROVE THAT THEY HAVE ATTENDED SCHOOL
DURING THE 12 MONTHS PRIOR TO THE EXAMINATION DATES.
NIS DOES NOT REGISTER STUDENTS IN G9 FOR IGCSE NOR DO WE REGISTER STUDENTS TO SIT EXAMINATIONS IN SUBJECTS
THAT HAVE NOT BEEN TAUGHT THROUGH SCHOOL.
If you have any questions, please contact Mr Ansir.
FEE PAYMENT DATES
As per the Fee Schedule and School Policy, payment terms are, either
- Payment in full (prior commencement of classes). - OR - Payment in three equal instalments prior to the
commencement of each term.
PARENTS ARE REMINDED THAT THE DUE DATES FOR PAYMENT FOR EACH TERM are:
Term 2 05th January 2020
Term 3 15th March 2020
SCHOOL EMERGENCY DRILLS
This is to inform you of the dates we are planning to have fire drills at the school. These planned evacuations are crucial to perfect our plans and systems. These are essential for the safe operation of any area containing hundreds of
people. Please do not be alarmed if your children mention these drills.
NIS – ‘NUTS & NUT PRODUCTS’
NIS has at least three children with a severe nut allergies. This allergic reaction is so pronounced that the allergy can be triggered simply by touch and smell.
This allergy is potentially life threatening for the concerned students. Therefore, we must insist that
all parents refrain from sending nuts or products containing nuts to school.
DRIVERS & NADA SECURITY
In the interests of safety and student wellbeing we would kindly request that all parents and drivers behave appropriately and sensibly within the school car parking area.
Regrettably, those parents / drivers who fail to follow the instructions of the Nada Security staff, or who are witnessed driving dangerously will be required to park outside the main gates and walk from outside to collect the children.
If Nada Security elects to enforce the above penalty, the school will not be able to assist any affected parents in any way.
SAFETY IN THE PARKING AREA
When visiting the school especially during the busy morning and afternoon periods please remember that you are not alone and please see the points below.
1. Look around and drive slowly: There are lots of small children around especially in the carpark and they are unpredictable.
2. Observe before reversing or setting off: We are all busy but be aware of other vehicles and what they may be about to do.
3. Carry out directions from security staff: The school is in a
busy compound and employs staff to assist and they know the best place to park.
4. You are responsible for your actions: Please be polite and
respect others.
5. Report any concerns: To either the school staff or the security members around, we like to know what’s happening.
SICK CHILDREN
NIS has a school nurse (Nurse Jean) and TIC (Mrs. Jayne). If either lady decides that your child is not fit for school, or poses a medical risk to other members of the school community, you will be contacted and requested to collect your child / children immediately.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR
CHILDREN TO SCHOOL IF THEY ARE ILL. IF YOUR CHILD
MISSES AN ASSESSMENT / EXAM THEY NEED AN OFFICAL
MEDICAL ABSENCE NOTE FROM A MEDICAL DOCTOR, WHO
CANNOT BE THE PARENT.
CHICKEN POX
We have received another
confirmed case of Chicken Pox in
the school. Please be aware that if
your child contracts this ailment
THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO
ATTEND SCHOOL FOR AT LEAST
ONE WEEK AFTER THE BLISTERS
APPEAR, UNTIL ALL THE BLISTERS HAVE
COMPLETELY DRIED UP.
IN ALL MEDICAL CASES THE
DECISION OF THE SCHOOL
NURSE IS THE FINAL ONE
WINTER WEATHER – Order School Jerseys
The Winter is now here and we expect cold
weather, particularly in the morning, for the
next few months. School jerseys are available
from Mrs. Jean. Please get your child to see her
if you would like to order a school jersey.
Please ensure that your child comes to school
dressed appropriately for colder weather. We
still see many children in short sleeved shirts,
with no jersey or outdoor coat. Outdoor coats
are not allowed to be worn in class.
WINTER DAYS
Dear Parents, The cold winter weather is almost here. Student safety is our first priority and a shared responsibility. Please make sure your children are dressed warmly and appropriately for cold days. Hats, long pants, warm jackets, layers, scarves, and gloves or mittens are essential for students to safely be outside for any period of time.
It is important that children not be allowed to leave the house with exposed skin (ears, hands, legs, etc.). We want all students to be comfortable while enjoying these brisk winter days.
We ask the students to take off their jackets in classrooms as being too hot make them sweat, creating moisture. When it is cold outside, being damp is uncomfortable and can be a danger as they will lose body heat more quickly.
With your cooperation and adherence to winter weather advices, we can help achieve safe conditions for students travelling to and from school. Please put safety first.
END of SCHOOL – Private Transport Parents who elect to transport children to the school either personally or with a private driver are reminded that they
should collect the children each day. At 14:10 KG1 – 2 parents should collect their children from the ELC Department. Parents or drivers of other grades should meet their children on the artificial turf at the side of the Administration Building. Once children leave the school gate, parents / drivers should take great care. This is the responsibility of either the parent or private driver. NIS does not hold any responsibility in this regard. All children should be escorted by parents / drivers
to their respective vehicles. Children should not be told to find the car alone, or to wait in the parking area.
DESPITE THIS WARNING WE ARE STILL FINDING
CHILDREN ON THE SCHOOL CARPARK, LOOKING
FOR PARENTS AND DRIVERS. THIS IS HIGHLY
DANGEROUS. PARENTS / DRIVERS SHOULD MEET
AND COLLECT THE CHILDREN AS DESCRIBED
ABOVE. NIS TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR
ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY PARENTS / DRIVERS
FAILING TO COLLECT AND SUPERVISE THEIR
CHILDREN, AS REQUIRED ABOVE.
UNWANTED ITEMS – POT NOODLES
ANY FOOD THAT REQUIES THE ADDITION OF
HOT WATER, SUCH AS NOODLES. AFTER A
SERIES OF ACCIDENTS INVOLVING HOT
WATER, THE DECISION HAS BEEN MADE NOT
TO ALLOW THESE ITEMS AT SCHOOL.
PARENTS ARE REQUESTED TO PROVIDE CHILDREN MORE
HEALTHY FOOD FOR SCHOOL SUCH AS FRUIT, PASTA,
BREAD ETC.
UNWANTED ITEMS – Chocolate
Please do not send children to school
with chocolate or chocolate containing
products. This makes a mess, is bad for
teeth and invariably impacts the
behaviour of young children.
SHOW MY HOMEWORK {G1-12}
All homework assignments for every academic subject will be posted via the Show My Homework portal. If your child cannot access this portal for any reason they should see their respective Form Teacher, Class Teacher or section Supervisor immediately. All parents in KG1 & KG2 should check the Homework Diary every day when your child returns home from school. This is the major communication tool between home and school.
CLASS DOJO - PRIMARY
All teachers from KG – G3 currently use Class Dojo as a means of communication with parents. Teachers can send messages to groups of parents and to individual parents. As a parent you can contact the teacher. However, please be mindful of the fact that teachers are only required to respond to reasonable parental requests, during the working week and up to 4pm. Any
messages received after this, or during the weekend / holiday periods, will not be responded to until the working hours of the next working day. Therefore, we politely ask parents to remember that teachers, like doctors or engineers, have the right to family time outside these hours.
PRIMARY SCIENCE WEEK
Primary Science Week will take place in Week 20 which is Sunday 26th January to Thursday 30th January. During this week the Primary students will be doing different science activities and experiments to see how exciting science can be! We know the students are going to love Science Week. Please check Class Dojo as your teacher will post a list of items they will need you to send in to help the students complete all of the activities. Remember to check the newsletter and Class Dojo after Science Week so you can see some of the exciting activities the students completed.

GRADE 1 BOYS SCIENCE
Grade 1Boys had a fun learning experience during their Science lesson while investigating dissolving substances. All four c(s) were incorporated into the lesson. Learners were given the opportunity to predict and test the solubility of different substances. Also students were challenged to investigate whether cold and warm affect the solubility of these materials .Well done boys!
KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY
Viscosity is one of the physical property of liquids that describes how they flow. Honey and corn syrup are described as having high viscosities because they flow more slowly than water, which has a low viscosity. Viscosity is among one of many other characteristics that compares solid to liquid to gas.
In IGCSE, students are learning about kinetic molecular theory and different states of matter. In this lab they are experiencing a new state of matter that is neither solid nor liquid. They are comparing this state of matter to solid and liquid through viscosity and other characteristics.
Though there are three states of matter, solids can be further divided into crystalline solids and amorphous solids.
In crystalline solids, the particles are arranged to form a regular, repeating pattern. Salt, sugar, and ice are all examples of crystalline solids.
Amorphous solids are solids that are made up of particles that are not arranged in a regular pattern, such as in glass, plastic, and rubber. Amorphous solids, unlike crystalline solids, do not have a distinct melting point, but simply become softer and softer as their temperature increases.
Liquids also can very tricky in their classification. Solutions and colloids are mixtures that are uniform throughout the mixture. The particles in a colloid are larger than those found in a solution, but small enough to remain in suspension permanently and be homogeneous, such as fat globules in milk. A suspension, on the other hand, is a type of mixture that contains particles that are heavy enough to settle to the bottom after being stirred up. Usually suspensions are opaque or “smoky” looking and do not transmit light. A good example of a suspension is very fine sand in water.
Keep these facts in mind while you are observing your Oobleck creation.
How to make your Oobleck ?
1. Measure out 175mL corn starch into the 250mL beaker (estimate the amount using the measurements on the side of the beaker). Pour the corn starch into the bowl.
2. Measure out 100mL of water. Add a small amount of water at a time to the corn starch until the mixture begins to thicken (somewhat like the consistency of yogurt). Stir carefully! Don't fight the viscosity of the Oobleck!!!

MESSAGE FROM MR. ANSIR
Greetings to the NIS Community! A massive welcome back to all our students for term 2! I hope that all had a great vacation and are rested, ready for this term. The first term was the longest, 16 weeks but the remainder of the year is 20 weeks, so before you know it, we will be leaving for the summer vacation.
The students stared the term brilliantly last week and have settled back into their normal routine.
A lot will be going on this term and the next, so it’s important that students are organised and ready. Activities session 1 will finish in the next week and Session 2 will start the following week. The champions’ league for G4 – 12 restarted with some matches being played already (teachers drew their first match this term). There are lots and lots of things going on, so please keep updated by reading this weekly newsletter.
NIS has a book fair all this week including on PTC, which is on Saturday 18th January. This is an ideal time to get updated with your students’ progress. Reports will be distributed this week, so watch for them. Volleyball, cricket and more will be going on also. The Cambridge examinations will be held at NIS, with practical and speaking examinations going on during April and the bulk of the examinations happening in May / June.
Please regularly checking the NIS website as it has consistent updates regarding what is going on in school. Please feel free to contact us at any time. Your feedback is welcome and appreciated.
SENIOR VALUES CERTIFICATES
Cooperation, Creativity and Excellence are
the three new values to be most promoted
during Term 2.
Value slips will be distributed by teachers to students in grades 4-7 who reflect any of the three values. According to the system, each three Value Slips will qualify the student to receive a Value Certificate and a Golden Ticket, which will eventually allow students to participate in raffle draw at the end of the term and therefore, get a great chance to win a Grand Prize.
GOLDEN TICKET WINNERS – TERM 1
We have had an amazing term 1, with so many students entering the golden ticket draw. Here are the winners of Term:
For those of you that did not win this term, don’t worry we still have 1 more golden ticket draw at the end of Term 3, so start collecting your golden tickets to be in the chance of receiving an amazing reward!
MATHLETICS – WEEK 17
GRADE 7 – PUBLIC SPEAKING
Recently, 7 Boys A, did really a good job preparing for their Public Speaking Competition. After hours of preparation, the moment to deliver their speech arrived. They were standing before the whole class, all eyes on them, with confidence that no one could take away. Then they began… “Hello, everyone. Thank you for having me. My name is ______ _______, and I am going to be speaking to you today about _______. To begin, _______ is important because…”
The winners were:
1. Ahmed Kassem 1st place. 2. Raaed Rashed 2nd place. 3. Ahmed Qarah 3rd place. 4. Ibrahim 4th place.
HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT
Students are constantly learning how they can make a difference in the world. One popular issue is about preserving the resources in the environment by reducing the wastage and efficient energy consumption. Here are some ways with which we can change some of the habits which degrades the earth. Moreover, such smaller initiatives brings bigger difference around us. Using reusable grocery bags
Plastic grocery bags end up in landfills or oceans and those take decades to decompose. Hence, it suffocates the animals who might get trapped in it or may mistakenly eat it and even result in poor quality soil that can’t support any kind of cultivation without the help of supplements.
Reusable grocery bags cut short the use of low grade plastic bags that are harmful to our environment.
If we still can’t avoid such bags reuse it for various purposes, e.g. using it for terrace farming or in the garden instead of flower pots or to use it as a storage bag.
Printing, as little as possible
Approximately 80,000 to 160,000 trees are cut down daily worldwide. The average person in the United States uses approximately seven trees per year in various paper products
So, it means that we have to use each paper wise enough to keep our planet green. Researcher’s estimates that Each ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees and a multitude of other resources such as oil, water, landfill space and the energy used to produce paper.
Therefore, try to print on both sides and in type in smaller font size (if it’s not strictly official!) so that you end up consuming less paper.
Reuse the clean part of the used paper to make jot pads for your lesson or mini books to make your shopping list.
Even the materials from a disposed printer cartridge, not being biodegradable and unless recycled properly, pollutes the environment due to the poisonous effects of the ink.
Segregated recycling methods
Make a habit to recycle the garbage’s in a segregated manner.
Separate it as different categories- Food waste, plastics, styrofoam, electronic, poisonous, radioactive or glass wastes.
As plastics has become unavoidable in our life try to choose those which are environment friendly i.e. biodegradable and those which can be reused or other purposes.
Use of reusable cups and bottles
It sounds unreasonable in some occasions, but carrying a coffee mug or a refillable water bottle can tremendously reduce the use of paper cups and plastic bottles.
Buy bulky containers of house hold consumables, like drinking water, cleansing solution, oil, etc., and transfer it to smaller containers according to the consumption.
Efficient use of electricity
Use energy efficient electrical appliances which are of good quality especially with those that are unavoidable in our lifestyle, e.g. bulbs, AC, refrigerator, heater etc.
Turn off the light when not in use and never leave television on stand-by mode.
Set a temperature of 24 to 26 degree on your AC in addition to high fan speed and doors/windows shut, to maintain an optimal atmosphere in your room always.
Keeping water resources clean and avoiding its wastage
Water is very essential to sustain life on earth, that’s why the scientist are hovering around the universe in search of water molecules in other planets. It is the source of life. Without its presence plants won’t survive resulting in food shortage and ultimate doom of living beings
Saving water means not only to preserve water but also to not to use water more than we need and keeping the rest of it clean and unpolluted. When we save water, we do so both for our generation and for future generations.
