It has been our experience at times that
some people may feel they are not able
to receive Communion due to divorce
or other personal issues. Often times,
there may be a misunderstanding regarding Church
Teaching in these matters. You are encouraged to see Fr.
Gill, Deacons Jim, John or Tony for clarity so that you do
not miss the opportunity to celebrate the healing presence
of Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and in turn
come to the Table of the Lord.

FAITH BOOK FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT (A)

From today’s Gospel:
O my people! I will put my Spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus, you
shall know that I am the Lord.
Reflection:
Throughout the world our Church has been seriously damaged by the clerical sexual abuse scandals. At this Eucharist we implore our Creator God to restore our dead and wounded parts to new life; to breathe the Spirit into us, as God promises to do today through the prophet Ezekiel.
So, we ask ourselves:
Have I prayed for the healing of the victims of sexual abuse in the Church?
Have I intensified my prayers this Lent for the healing of the Church from this scandal?
Heavenly Father, we ask you to guide us as we enter into and continue the task
of renewing our parishes, our deaneries and our diocese
Help us to be the Church to which Your Son calls us We pray for the grace needed
to remain rooted in our deepest values in the midst of a changing world and
to move forward with confidence in Your Providential Care.
Keep us always focused on the fact that
we are on this earth to announce the tidings of great joy to all the people
and build the reign of God among us
We ask your wisdom through Christ our Lord
Amen

Dear Parishioner,
Greetings of Peace!
At this challenging time and as we face the world wide crisis of the COVID-19 virus, we recognize how fragile we are. As one author says, “Some disasters, like hurricanes and earthquakes, can bring people together, but if history is our judge, Pandemics generally drive them apart. These are the crisis in which social distancing is a virtue. Dread overwhelms the normal bonds of human affections.”
God said to St. Catherine of Siena, “I could well have supplied each of you with all your needs, both spiritual and material. But I wanted to make you dependent on one another so that each of you would be a minister, dispensing the grace and gifts you have received from me.”
We are afraid because we were caught off-guard and unprepared. Our daily lives are in havoc. The simplest things we did like going to mass, go to a store, visit a family member or a friend has been taken away from us. Let us remember that our Father is the creator and sustainer of all. Let us pray for healing for those who are sick, for an end to the spread of the virus and for those in isolation or under lockdown and for patience, positive attitude and optimism.
I want to share with you that you are remembered in my daily private Holy Mass and personal prayers. Rest assured this Pandemic will pass away and the faithful people will live on. Let’s not forget that the people of Israel lived out in the time of crisis and God rewarded them. Church history reminds us that the early Christians, in spite of persecution and discrimination, Jesus walks with them and saved them.
I believe that these crisis will pass and our faith will be tested. All of us, along with our children and grandchildren will remember that God put us together for a purpose as a family so that we can share a meal together, pray together, and support one another while living our lives under these circumstances with love and care. We must also be mindful of our neighbor and help the vulnerable people of this community.
Our Good Shepherd, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio is very much aware of the needs of his flock whereas in some churches there have been confirmed cases COVID-19. The temporary closing of churches and rectories is a proactive step in protecting the people of God. The safety and well-being of the faith community is the primary concern. Immaculate Heart of Mary has been live streaming Stations of the Cross, Recitation of the Rosary and Benediction on Facebook with John Mancuso and hopefully on Immaculate Heart of Mary Church-BKLYN page. NET-TV has been televising the Celebration of the Eucharist. (Spectrum Channel 97 and Optimum Channel 30) Weekdays: at 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. (Spanish), 12 noon, 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Weekends: Saturday 6:00 p.m., Sunday 11:00 a.m. (English) and 1:30 p.m. (Spanish).
I want to thank each one of you for your understanding, support, and prayer. We are here to support and take care of one another. I ask each of you when conducting personal and family prayer, to pray for victims of the Coronavirus, doctors, nurses, care givers, pastoral care personals, family members, political and religious leaders who in this time of crisis are doing their best to help and protect us from this world wide Pandemic.

Baptism of Infants (Children age 7 years and younger)
Baptism Preparation Classes for families planning to have their child baptized at Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place the first Saturday of every month at 11:00 a.m. in the Marian Center. Parents must
attend; sponsors are also encouraged to join us for the class. Families must be registered for the class prior to attending by contacting the Rectory. The celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism has been cancelled until futher notice. You must be pre-registered and attend the Baptism Preparation Class held first Saturday of the month.
Baptism of Children (Children who have celebrated their
8th Birthday and older.)
Children who have celebrated their 8th birthday must participate in a process - The Rite of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) adapted for Children. This process takes place over three to five years and includes your child attending Faith Formation Classes and Mass regularly. This is a faith journey for both you and your child. When there is an appropriate readiness, your child is baptized, confirmed and receives Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Your child continues regular instruction in the Faith Formation Program for several years after their initiation. For more information contact the rectory.
Only Parents or Legal Guardians may register a child for Baptism. No date is definite until you have completed all

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
The R.C.I.A. is designed for adults who have never been baptized, perhaps been baptized in another faith, or baptized Catholic but never received Eucharist and Confirmation. This is an opportunity to explore life in the Catholic Community, have a companion on your faith journey, prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, and/or Eucharist, and Confirmation).

Proximate Preparation Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation
All families registered in our parish who anticipate their children will receive Penance & First Eucharist (Communion) in the spring of 2020 or Confirmation in the fall of 2019 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church must attend our Proximate Preparation Program. This would include children of our parish currently registered in Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy, other Catholic or Private Schools and/or our Children’s Faith Formation Program.
Children who worship in other parishes who will be attending Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy and wish to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary will need a letter from their pastor granting them permission to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
In addition, children of our parish who attend other private or Catholic Schools are encouraged to ‘come home’ to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Proximate Preparation is for parents and children to attend together.
As always, it is the expectation that all are attending mass regularly. Remember these are the Sacraments of Initiation, initiation into the worshipping community. For further information or clarification, please contact the rectory. To assist us in planning, please call to register if you are not attending our Children’s Faith Formation Program.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Cancer Guild

This group meets weekly to sew pads for cancer patients at St. Rosary Hill Home run by the Dominican Sisters. There is a need for clean, soft cotton, flannel sheets or light quilts/blankets to provide material for the Cancer Pads the ladies sew. Donations can be brought to Rectory. Thank you!

VOLUNTEER WITH IHM AT THE NYC MARATHON!
Join the ‘IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CHURCH – BROOKLYN’ group at the 50th running of the NYC Marathon (Sunday 11/01/2020) for a super fun-filled day of hard work and welcoming spirit, as we give drink to the thirsty and cheer on tens of thousands of runners from all over the world!
We will be at Mile 4 Fluid Station (4th Ave/63rd St, Brook-lyn), but you can choose a different location if that works better for you – just remember to choose our group name when signing up. For every 20 volunteers from our group who volunteer on race day, we will get a guaranteed entry to the 2021 race.
Volunteers must be at least 13, and if under 18, must be registered by a parent or guardian. Great opportunity to collect service hours for school or confirmation, and have a chance to stand right on the course as the runners go by…plus score a special 50th Anniversary commemorative poncho, along with other cool volunteer swag.
